Sound of Drums- Part 3
Suddenly Jack's Vortex Manipulator went off. "Encrypted channel, with files attached." Jack said, reading it. "I don't recognize it."
"Mmm," The Doctor said, leaning forward. "How are you going to look at that?"
"Since we are telling stories, there's something I haven't told you." Jack said. Then he took the laptop and hooked his Vortex Manipulator up to it. TORCHWOOD came up in read.
"You work for TORCHWOOD." The Doctor stated.
"I swear to you, it's different, it's changed. There's only a half a dozen of us now." Jack said.
"You knew what TORCHWOOD did and you are apart of it." The Doctor said.
"The old regime was destroyed at Canary Wolf. I rebuilt it. I changed it. And when I did that, I did that for you in your honor." Jack said. The Doctor and Jack stared at eachother then The Doctor pressed the button that said 'enter'.
A video came up with a woman on it. "If I haven't returned to this desk by 22 hundred, this file will be emailed to TORCHWOOD. Which means if you are watching this then I'm...Anyway, the Saxon files are attached. But take a look at the archangel document. That's when it all started, when Harold Saxon became minister in charge of launching the archangel network."
"What's the archangel network?" The Doctor asked.
"I've got it." Martha said pulling out her phone. "Everyone's got it."
"It's a global phone network, look." Jack said, pointing to the screen. "It's gone world wide. They've got fifteen satellites in orbit leaving all the networks there carried by archangel."
The Doctor took out his sonic screwdriver and pointed it at Martha's phone. I took out my phone and looked at it. "I don't have archangel." I said.
"It's in the phones!" The Doctor said, ignoring me. "Oh I said he was a hypnotist. Wait, wait, wait. Hold on." Then the phone began beeping out the rhythm. da-da-da-dum, da-da-da-dum. "There it is. That rhythm. That's everywhere. Ticking away in the subconscious."
"What is it? Mind control?" Martha asked.
"No, no, no, no. It's not that. It's weaker than that. Any stronger and people would question it, but contained in that rhythm, layers of code, vote Saxon. Believe in me. Whispering to the world...Ah, yes!" The Doctor said. "That' how he hid himself from me because I should have sensed that there was another timelord around, I should have known way back then. The signal canceled him out."
"Any way you can stop it?" Jack asked.
"Not from down here. But now we know how he's doing it."
"And now we can fight back." Martha said.
"Oh yes!" The Doctor said.
Martha and I watched as jack and The Doctor worked. Then The Doctor put his hand out and said "Key." We all handed him our Tardis keys.
After The Doctor was done he said "Four Tardis key's. Four pieces of the Tardis. All with low level perception filters because the Tardis is designed to blend in. Well sort of, but now, the archangel network got second low level signal. Got the key to the network and look at me, Martha, Susan, you can see me." The Doctor said, holding the string with the Tardis key on it.
Martha nodded "Yeah."
"What about now." The Doctor said, putting on the string.
"Hello, I'm here." The Doctor said. I blinked.
"It's like, I know you're there, but I don't wanna know." Martha said.
The Doctor took off the string. "And back again. See, just shifts your perception by a tiny little bit. It doesn't make us invisible, just unnoticed. Oh, I know what it's like. It's like when you fancy someone and they hardly know you exist. That's what it's like. Come on!" I grabbed my key and handed one to Martha.
"You too huh?" Jack asked Martha. Then Jack and I ran off to catch up with The Doctor with a stunned Martha following behind us.
We came out to a street with The Doctor telling us instructions. "Don't run. Don't shout. Just keep your voice down. Draw attention to yourself and the spell is broken. Listen, keep to the shadows."
"Like ghosts." Jack said.
We put the string around our necks with the Keys hanging down. "Yes. That's what we are. Ghosts."
Then we started walking.
We stood by as Air Force One landed. We stood facing the runway, first The Doctor, then Martha, next me and last, Jack. We all stood as still as we possibly could.
I could barely hear what the current president was saying to The Master.
Then at the end of his chat with the President, The Master turned and looked straight at us. Then we heard a siren and a police car came up and stopped.
The Master laughed and ran up to the doors as they opened and said "Hi guys!" Then they pulled out the Jones family, still complaining.
"Oh my God." Martha whispered. I moved my hand to grab Martha's and squeezed it.
"Don't move." The Doctor said.
"But-"
"Don't." The Doctor said.
"They're going to kill them."
"I say lets use this perception filter to walk up behind him and break his neck." Jack said. I moved my free hand and grabbed Jack's hand.
"Now that sounds like TORCHWOOD." The Doctor said.
"Still a good plan." Jack said.
"He's a Time Lord." The Doctor said. "Which makes him my responsibility. I'm not here to kill him. I'm here to save him."
"Aircraft carrier Valiant, that's a UNIT ship." Jack said, letting go of my hand and fiddling with his Vortex Manipulator. Fifty eight point two north, ten point o two east."
"How do we get on board?" Martha asked.
"Does that thing work as a teleport?" The Doctor asked.
"Since you revamped it, yeah." Jack said. "Coordinates set."
I grabbed Jack's wrist with my right hand and The Doctor put Martha's hand next then his hand. We vanished.
