Chapter 39
"What is in that?!" Hanna gasped as Spencer put down here belongings in the hallway. She had a grey set of luggage and the small carry on seemed to be moving and making noises.
"It's Demetrius. Since I won't give Toby a baby, I got him this." Spencer groaned taking the small feline out of the pet carry bag.
"Oh no, no. That can noooot be here." Hanna replied quickly.
"Well, Toby couldn't take it with him, so he has to stay here." Spencer replied hastily.
When Toby was told he had to attend the training in Russia, he and Spencer decided to not renew the lease at their town house. Spencer offered to stay and help Hanna for the two months that their men would be away and plans on looking for perspective house's in the meantime.
"Pregnant people can't be around cat litter. It's in all of the books." Hanna exhaled nervous about the furry little creature that was making himself at home on her couch.
"Hanna, I wasn't going to make you change his litter." Spencer snuffed grabbing 'Demi' (as she called him) and stroking under his chin.
"You have to get it out of here before Parker wakes up. She was a freaking mess when Caleb left this morning and she is going to freak the eff out. I can NOT have a toddler, a newborn and a fucking cat." The pregnant girl rattled off fearing her affectionate child would become way too attached to the cat.
"Chill, she will be fine. Parker will be fine when the cat leaves because Caleb will be home." Spencer soothed the distressed blonde.
"Fine." Hanna exhaled deeply. "But it better not pee on anything."
Spencer unloaded the belongings she brought for the two month stay while Hanna snuck into her room beside her sleeping child and soon drifted off herself. A little while later she was awaken by a shrill giggle that came from Parker.
"Kitty, Kitty!" she trembled with excitement squeezing the little grey fluff ball.
"Sorry!" Spencer mumbled while making her way over to retrieve the cat.
"Hey, you have to pet it softly Parker." Hanna corrected her daughter who was mere seconds away from squeezing the poor cat to death.
"Well, it is probably a good thing she is getting some practice in before you guys have an infant that can't support its own head." Spencer chuckled as Hanna shot her a glare.
"Well the baby won't be sneaking up in bed." Hanna retorted with a little huff.
"Woah, I think your mom needs a nap!" Spencer giggled as she held the cat and Parker in her arms. "I'm going to take these two outside to play for a little bit, you relax ok Han?"
Hanna reluctantly agreed as her tall brunette friend whisked her child out the door. She really couldn't be mad at Spencer. After all, she was staying with her to help her in the final stage of her pregnancy and she had pretty much came to her rescue more times than she could even count.
The next day Hanna dragged herself out of bed early for it was the last day of her internship and she wanted to look nice because Leonard had asked the interns to a dinner afterwards.
"Spencer are you sure you want to keep Park here? It really wouldn't be a problem to call my Mom to watch her like she normally does." Hanna questioned picking up her purse.
"We're good." She replied not taking her eyes off the television screen. "Plus I only have two months to get her to like me better than Toby."
"Alright then." Hanna laughed as she kissed Parker goodbye. "Mommy will be home later, you be good for auntie Spence! Call me if you need anything."
Hanna and the four other interns spent the day working on their vision boards and updating a list of work experience which Leo was going to sign off on. After work, the group met up at an upscale steakhouse in downtown Montecito. As appetizers were placed in front of the group a server came around with a bottle of sparkling champagne. The crowd of future designers all looked to Hanna as the server stood next to her and poured her a glass.
"I can't have any, I'm not of age." She replied as Leonard and her fellow interns stared at her. "Oh and because this too." She laughed awkwardly as she patted her distended abdomen.
"You know, I was worried you were growing a tumor Hanna." Leo replied as he took a drink from his glass. Everyone at the table laughed including Hanna. The rest of the dinner was spent discussing all the projects they had worked on and how 'proud' Leonard was of the progress that all of them had made. After everyone was finished, Hanna snuck away to the bathroom before her trip back home. She was surprised when she came back out that Leo was still there and asked to join her at his table once again.
"Hanna, if you don't mind I would like to discuss some business matters with you for a moment."
The young blond nervously exhaled and agreed as she sat back down again.
"I haven't seen raw talent like yours in all of the years that I have agreed upon mentoring the students at MSU. That is why I accepted you on as a sophomore versus a junior like the other inters. Everything I asked of you, you fulfilled and exceeded all of my expectations. I obviously can see you have plans for this summer," he replied gesturing to the girls large baby bump, "But in the fall, the firm and I decided we would love to hire you on as an assistant." He smiled as Hanna's face lit up.
"Thank you." She replied excitedly. "I know I never talked about this with you, but I actually have a toddler at home too. So in early August I will have a newborn and a two year old." She hesitated knowing how full her plate was already.
"I totally understand. That's why I was thinking that a part time position would be the best fit. Maybe a couple hours a day you come by the office and help with your expertise?"
Hanna sat back in her chair as she thought about things. She really didn't know if she could spare even a few hours a day, but it was such an honor to be asked to work alongside Leo versus doing the dirty work of an intern.
"I have to tell you Hanna, I very much admire what you are doing. Going to school and also juggling parenthood. I won't keep you from your family, I promise. When I was a young man and set off to make this my career, I threw myself into it entirely. Now I have an ex wife who hates me and two boys that I barely even know. It is one of my deepest regrets but you, you have the capability to do better. At both roles, Hanna."
Hanna's eye's welled up as Leonard stood up and gave her a hug. Hanna promised the middle aged man she would notify him of baby number two's arrival and they would discuss plans for her upcoming gig of assistance after she was fully recovered.
After the eventful evening, Hanna returned home opening the door to her living room covered in blankets. Suddenly a little face popped out of the makeshift fort.
"Mama!" Parker giggled as Spencer crawled out from behind her.
"Wow. Did you and Auntie Spencer have fun?"
"Yeah! Pencer and Kitty!" she squealed showing her mom the cat.
"We made s'mores and watched the Little Mermaid." Spencer added proudly. "I am so going to be the favorite."
Hanna had a smile on her face as she kicked of her heels and sunk into the couch.
"Oh my gosh Hanna! You have Kim Kardashian cankles right now." She shrieked at her friends poor swollen ankles and feet.
"Yeah, it was a long day. But a good day."
"Care to share?" Spencer asked amused at why someone with lower extremities in that condition would be so happy.
"Leonard asked me to be his assistant." She replied as Spencer gasped
"Oh my God that's awesome!" Parker started clapping, "Yay Mama!"
"For a celebration, I will bathe and put this wild one to bed so you can deflate a little." Spencer replied picking up the eager tot.
"Thank you." She mouthed as Auntie Pencer hauled the little one to the bathroom.
