I've gotten a few requests to have Penelope get hurt and Regina goes into Mama Bear mode. Penelope is 5 years old in this one.
Regina hadn't been getting a lot of one on one time with her kids as of late, things had just been so busy and it was getting harder and harder to do. Especially since Henry was 15 and Roland had just celebrated his 11th birthday, their willingness to spend a lot of time with their moms was shrinking. Luckily, she still had one kid that thought she was one of the coolest people on Earth (she'd share the title with Emma, she was quite partial to her wife herself): Penelope. So, one Saturday afternoon when the mayor had no paperwork or meetings, she took her youngest out for a girls' day. Emma had been invited, but she had to work. The first part had been mani-pedis at the house.
"You have to sit still," Regina told her with a slight giggle as she painted her toes. The hands had been no problem, but Penelope was extremely ticklish.
"I'm trying Mommy," the little girl replied, giggling herself. "I like this color."
"Me too, red has always been my favorite." Regina winked at her daughter. She would've taken her to the salon, but they didn't do kids' nails until they were 10. "After this we can go get ice cream and then go to the park."
"Yay!" Penelope kicked her little leg in excitement and accidentally knocked over the little bottle of polish. Luckily, none spilled out, but she still covered her mouth, her bright red nails on full display. "Oops."
"It's alright, Princess. Mommy's almost done."
Regina finished up and capped the bottle, using her blow dryer (on low) to dry off her tiny toes, which just lead to more giggling. It really was different to have a daughter. While she wouldn't have traded her time when the boys were little for the world, Penelope was definitely a little different. Emma and Regina had always allowed their sons to play with whatever they wanted, but they would typically choose the stuff geared towards their gender in the first place. While Penelope, on the other hand, played with both. She used their old G.I Joes to marry her Barbies, because she thought the Ken dolls were weird. Though, two of the G.I Joes were apparently married and they babysat for two of the Barbies' daughter.
After getting Penelope into sandals, they headed out for ice cream. Penelope couldn't stop kicking her legs as they walked, to admire her freshly painted nails.
"You like them, Princess?" Regina asked, amused.
"Uh huh! They're so cool!"
The mayor smiled. "I'm glad. We can do it more often if you want."
"Okay!" The little girl's blue eyes lit up with excitement.
Once they had their ice cream (Regina decided it was a special occasion that called for 2 scoops), it was off to the park. It took all the woman had not to follow her daughter around the playground area. She knew she was being an overprotective, helicopter parent, she just couldn't happen. People say that normally they calm down with their third kid and while that was the case when it came to some things, she still got nervous with them running around and playing. Emma always laughed at her, but Regina always reminded her of the time that Henry thought he was Baymax and jumped off the slide. Roland and Penelope had always been instructed to never do the same, but still, anything could go wrong.
While most moms were sitting, she stayed standing up, leaning against a tree. She watched Penelope meet up with some kids from her class and they began playing tag. It was all seemingly innocent, so when her cell rang and she saw it was her friend, Mal, she decided to answer it. She was still trying to keep an eye on her daughter, but then the woman on the other end of the line began ranting about her wife and the mayor was hooked. She hated Mal's wife, but understood the two were trying to make it work for their daughter's sake.
What she missed, was Penelope and her friends deciding that tag was boring, so they ran to the trees and attempted to climb them. While the playground area had rubber tile surrounding it for safety, the trees were planted where the blacktop was. When Regina ended the call, she looked towards the grass area, but came up short. Same with the jungle gym equipment. She began panicking and that didn't end when she turned to find her daughter climbing a tree.
"Penelope Victoria Swan-Mills!" Regina called out. That proved to be a big mistake. Penelope turned to look at her mother, while also losing grip on the part of the tree she was holding. Before Regina could move, she went falling to the ground with a thud. Panic turned quickly to horror and she ran over. "Penny!" She knelt down beside her now sobbing daughter and quickly examined her. Miraculously, there was no blood, but still she wanted to be careful with her head. She then noticed her daughter was clutching her left shoulder. "Does that hurt?"
"Yes!"
"Don't worry baby girl, Mommy's going to make it better." She quickly looked around at the group of parents that had surrounded them. Some were trying to get their own kids down safely, while others were just standing around. "I need some space!" Regina's voice was sharp and dangerous, enough to clear the crowd. Carefully, she lifted her daughter into her arms and carried her to the car.
"Mommy," Penelope wailed.
"Shhh, it's going to be okay, baby," she whispered. Gently, she buckled her into her car seat and quickly drove to the hospital. Using her blue tooth, she was able to call Emma, but got her voicemail. When she got the station, Leroy said she was out on a call but that he would pass on the message. It took all Regina had not to threaten him to make sure he actually did.
"I want Mama," the little girl whined.
"I know honey, but she has to catch some bad guys. Don't worry, Mommy's here."
They soon arrived at the hospital, Penelope back in Regina's arms. The mayor was carefully cradling her head like she used to when she was a baby, scared to death that she'd end up with a concussion.
"My daughter fell out of a tree," she explained to the nurse, quickly. "Her shoulder hurts and she needs to be seen, now."
The man nodded, pushing forward a clipboard. "Just fill out this paperwork…"
"Here." Regina thrusted over a plastic card she had already pulled from her purse. "This is her insurance card, she's not allergic to anything and she's 5 years old. I am not wasting time filling out that busywork, just get someone to check out my baby, now!"
"Madam Mayor…"
"Now!"
The man sighed, but stood up and walked away for a few minutes. He finally returned, looking a little scared to say what he had to.
"We have a couple of patients that have to take priority, but it won't be long. Please just sit down."
Regina let out an exasperated sigh, but took a seat. She knew, realistically, that of course other emergencies had to come first, but in that moment, she didn't really care. Her daughter was still whimpering in her arms. She kept her head supported and cuddled her close.
"'m sorry I climbed the tree, Mommy," the little girl mumbled after a few minutes.
Regina sighed. "It's alright, baby. Never again, right?"
"Uh huh."
What felt like hours, but was really only 20 minutes, went by and a nurse came by to take them back. Vitals were taken and soon, the doctor was in.
"I heard the mayor's daughter was here." She knelt in front of Regina, so she was eye to eye with Penelope who was cuddling her mom on her lap. "I heard you fell from a tree."
"Uh huh."
"Does anything hurt?" The little girl pointed to her shoulder. "Okay, we're going to take some pictures of that does your head hurt?"
"Nuh uh."
"Well, we'll still check for a concussion. Come with me."
"Can't Mommy come?"
"I'm afraid not, the room's only big enough for you."
Regina wanted to fight him on it, but after going through all this with Henry and Roland, she knew he was right. "I'll be right here, Princess."
Penelope sighed and followed the doctor back. Regina waited nervously, soon getting a text from her wife. She was in the waiting room. The mayor got up and walked out of the room, heading to the front. The first thing the sheriff did, was wrap the mayor into a hug.
"Is she okay?"
Regina nodded into her shoulder. "They're doing X-Rays right now. She said her head didn't hurt, but they want to check for a concussion either way." She lead her back to the room so Penelope wouldn't come back and be alone. "I feel so stupid, I took a call from Mal and got distracted for a few minutes…"
"Regina, you did what I tell you to do all the time. You let her be a kid," Emma told her, soothingly.
"Well after this, she's not leaving my sight ever again."
The blonde laughed, tipping her head back a bit. "Oh, baby." She put a hand on her arm. "I'm sorry it took me so long to get here."
"It's fine. You have to do your job. Did you tell the boys?"
"Yes, Jefferson's dropping Henry off and Aurora will do the same with Roland in a bit, so we'll all be home together."
"That's good."
Penelope was eventually brought back in by a nurse. Emma scooped her up, kissing her temple.
"Hey Ladybug." She gave her a small smile. "Sorry it took me awhile."
"S'okay, Mama. You had to get the bad guys. Did you catch them?"
"I did, Uncle Leroy is taking care of them now."
"Good, he yells at them."
Emma and Regina laughed. Penelope had never witnessed this, but the man liked to brag about his way of dealing with perps. The doctor walked back in with a cart.
"Well, Penelope does not have a concussion," she explained to the mothers. "But, she did fracture her collar bone."
Emma frowned. "Does she need surgery?"
"No, but she will need lots of rest. I'm going to show you how to do her sling and give her a very low dose of children's pain medication. I'll recommend a specialist that you can take her to."
She helped Penelope into the sling, giving instructions on just how much rest she was going to need. Regina took down all the information for the follow up and they were able to go. Emma had gotten the messages while on the call, which was right by the hospital so she had walked, which meant she drove her wife's car home so the mayor could sit in the back with their daughter. She was not looking forward to no recess or rough play for a while.
Regina carried Penelope inside once they got home and saw Roland and Henry had set up the couch with her blankets and favorite stuffed animals. Even her favorite meal from Granny's was out on the table. The two mothers grinned.
"You two did all this?" Emma asked.
"We had some help from Jefferson and Aurora," Henry explained.
"How are you feeling, Penny?" Roland questioned his baby sister.
"It hurts," she replied, softly.
"We thought we could have a movie night," the boy explained. "Whichever one you want to watch."
"Even Moana?" Penelope asked, her tiny eyes narrowing.
Her brothers laughed, but assured her even that. Regina got her set up on the couch and sat with her, while Emma sat with the boys on the other. They had gotten their family night after all, just not in the way they expected.
