Here's another chapter.
I don't own Borderlands.
"...So you have the key, but you have no idea where the Lost Vault is?" Sarah asked.
"Right." Axton replied. It had been a week since the raid on the Temple. The Raiders were in possession of the Lost Vault key, but had no leads to the location of the Vault itself. Axton was the only one calling Sarah from the conference room.
"And Zero doesn't know?" She asked.
"It turns out Zero is old as shit, so he forgot a lot of things about the past." Axton replied. "Hell, he said he forgot he was involved with the Vaults until, well, he saw a Vault." He paused. "Hear anything from Jack?"
"No. And before you ask, I don't think he died in the moon base explosion. That would be far too easy." She said.
"Well, At least we pissed him off..."
"How are the others holding up?" Sarah asked.
"Well, everybody's still trying to detox from last week. They've taken a few random missions here and there." Axton paused. "...Misty and Hyzin have been with Claptrap."
"Ah. Has he woken up yet?" She asked.
"No. Maya and Lilith have been doing alternating shifts, keeping watch over him. He still seems to be in siren mode, so some of us are worried that he might wake up as crazy-Clyde." He explained.
"...If you had mentioned that Trappington had a son, I would have looked him up for you." Sarah said.
"I know that." Axton said. "I just didn't think it was important. If there was a guy out there who was connected to all of this, I wouldn't want to be the one to drag him back into it. What did you find on the kid?" He asked.
"I found a death certificate for his mother. Other than that, details have been sparse." She replied. "What do you plan on doing with him?"
"I think now we should just wait it out." The commando replied. "This could be bad, but it will only be worse if we rush into anything."
"Very well then." Sarah said. "That is your full report. Please get in contact with me with any future developments." She said.
"Right." Axton replied. Sarah stayed on-screen for a few seconds, looking at Axton.
Axton sighed. "Look, the kid did something for us. Putting down Roland wasn't an easy job- I should know. I feel like we owe it to him to let him sleep whatever this thing is off."
"Very well." Sarah replied.
"You are getting better at listening to feelings." Axton commented. "Misty's gonna be lucky." He grinned at this ex.
"Dismissed." Sarah said, blushing a bit before the line went dead.
"Hyzin?" Misty asked the cook. The two Vault Hunters were sitting in silence in Ted clinic. Claptrap was unconscious in the bed. Ted had set apart a special part of the clinic for friend to sleep. It gave them some privacy.
"Hm?" Hyzin looked up. He had dark bags under his eyes.
"Why do you care so much about Claptrap?" She asked.
Hyzin raised an annoyed eyebrow. "Why don't you?" He shot back.
"You know I care about him." She said. "But, Hyzin, you spent most of the last week in here. That would make sense if it was someone like Tannis, since they kinda had a thing, but why you?"
"Tannis has been in here." Hyzin replied. "You two just have different sleeping patterns."
"You know what I mean." The lieutenant replied. "I'm just asking. You've been like this pretty much when you met him. What's up?"
Hyzin looked at Misty. He sighed.
"You have to promise me that you won't tell anybody." He said. "Since the whole kid thing is probably Clap's biggest secret, I think I can trust you with mine."
"I promise." Misty assured her teammate.
"Even if your commander does a really cool trick with her tongue-"
"Hyzin…"Misty looked at the cook sternly, trying to hide her blush.
"Right." Hyzin replied. "Well...You know how I said I was the best cook and drug boss in the last three years?"
"Yes, you were pretty much bragging." She replied.
"Well...I lied about half of that."
"What do you mean?" Misty asked.
"Look, just know that I'm not gonna name any names during this, since that would defeat the purpose." Hyzin said. "I'm gonna start from the beginning."
"Back when I was a college student, I was pretty much top of my class." He replied. "I had to take a few extra courses, even though I was a chem major. So I took a business class because I thought it would be easy. It was." Hyzin paused for a second. "That's where I met him." He paused again.
"...Who?" Misty asked.
"My business teacher. He was a pretty cool old guy. We hit it off pretty great. I spent most of my time hanging out in his office when I wasn't busy with school or cooking." He said. "Those were some good times…"
"If you were in college and on top of your class, why did you drop out?" Misty asked.
"One day, he left." Hyzin said. "The guy loved his job, so I was naturally concerned. I tracked him down…" He paused again.
"And?" Misty asked.
"He had Multiple Personality Disorder." Hyzin said. "There was his fun, chill, happy teacher personality, and then there was…Hyzin."
"What?" Misty asked. "But aren't you Hyzin?"
"I'll get to that!" Hyzin replied. "The Hyzin personality was a cold, ruthless, sociopathic drug kingpin. He forced the other personality to fake his own death and divulge fully into the meth."
"So what did you do?" Misty asked.
"I went with him. I knew the teacher personality needed somebody to watch over him and be there for him. Hyzin knew I was the best cook around, and that I wasn't afraid to kill." He said. "I became his right hand man."
"So you were never a kingpin…" Misty said. "Do you realize how many charge could be taken off of you if you admitted that?"
"Yeah." Hyzin said. "But there's a good reason I didn't."
"One afternoon, after I had gone to do an errand for him, I came back to the Captain Cook- the name of the ship we used to cook in- when I saw other people in there."
"I went to investigate. Turns out they were some angry competitors. They had found some of our dealers selling on their turf, so they decided to take out the guy on top."
"Usually, I would have been there to stop them before they could even step foot on the ship. But since I was gone…" Hyzin paused, looking at Claptrap.
"They didn't kill Hyzin. The person in charge of that body was my friend. I watched him as he died. They beat him, then finished him off with a shot to the head."
"I don't remember what happened next that well. What I do remember is the aftermath. Four bodies were in front of me. I killed three of them, the other was my teacher."
"...I knew the police were on their way. I couldn't let them find his body. He died a good man, according to the community. There was a scholarship for him and everything. If they found out about what he had become, it would have ruined his reputation. Nobody ever met Hyzin. Nobody knew what he looked like."
"I did what I had to. I blew up the boat, making sure that the bodies inside of it were obliterated. Then I was arrested. They were looking for a kingpin, not a cook. So I became one."
Hyzin raised up his hands, as if he was surrendering and smiled grimly. "And that's the story of how the great Hyzin was captured."
Misty looked at him, shocked. "Hyzin…"
Hyzin looked down at Claptrap. "When I met Claptrap, and found out about his ability, obviously I made a comparison. A nice personality is dominant to the power the evil one holds." He glared at the body. "That siren asshole better not be hurting my friend."
"It would be pretty likely that some sort of inner battle going on in there." A voice said. "But I reckon we wait and see."
The two Vault Hunters turned over to Ted, who was standing at the edge of the room.
"How much of that did you hear?" Hyzin asked.
"Enough." Ted replied. "Don't you worry bout nothing. You can trust me." He said, pulling up a chair. "I reckon we're having a bit of a sharing circle, so I'll toss in my two cents."
"Did something happen to you?" Misty asked.
"Actually, it's more bout what I did to others." Ted replied. "I...didn't leave Pandora on the best of terms with my family. I wanted to become as separate from my homeworld as I could. Zed wrote to me a few times over the years, but then he stopped."
"Because he died?" Misty asked.
"That would sound better on me." Ted commented. "But, nah. Our ma died. Zed was sayin' she was sick for a while, but I didn't come visit. 'Parently she was askin' for me till she died. When I heard Zed was killed, considering where I was in life, I figured that maybe it was time I finally came home." He looked at Hyzin. "Not exactly as honor-y as you, but it's my story."
"That's sucks, Ted." Hyzin said, then turned to Misty. "I assume Miss Perfect doesn't have anything like that?"
"Well…" Misty said. "I used to be a track star. I specialize in the-"
"Javelin." Hyzin said.
"Let me tell my story, Henry." She said. "So, yeah, javelin. I was so good that obviously somebody had to take me down. So I got kicked out of the sport after somebody forged a failed drug test in my name."
"Anybody here know bout that?" Ted asked.
"Oh, yeah. It was one of the first conversations I had with Gaige." She replied. "Our stories are pretty similar at that point, although I didn't accidently kill anybody."
"Because that story would have been so much better if you had impaled somebody in the end." Hyzin added.
Misty glared at him. "Just because you had the most interesting story doesn't mean you can keep shitting on everybody elses." She said. "Anyway, I joined the military after that. And that's pretty much the end of my story."
"So how'd you end up on Pandora?" Hyzin asked. "There has to be more than that."
"Well...It was a bit of a misunderstanding that Commander Rhodes took advantage of." She said. "There was a robot attack on city near the beginning of the war. I figured out early on that they were taking dead bodies and converting them into meat shields. So needless to say, I got in a lot of trouble when people found out I was 'desecrating corpses.'"
"You were cutting of their heads?" Ted asked. "Well, that would probably work."
"Exactly!" Misty replied. "And it is common practice now. My charges, however, were grandfathered into the new rules, so they weren't dropped. An appeal to the board could get them dropped pretty quickly, but Sarah said she wanted me on Pandora." She finished.
"Well, I think this is the part of the story where we all circle up and sing Kumbaya." Ted said.
"Claptrap's still not up…" Hyzin said, looking at his friend.
"He can get through this…" Misty said, trying to reassure everybody.
"Well, what the hell is it anyway?" Hyzin asked.
"Like I said," Ted said. "Only time will tell."
So they waited.
This chapter fills two purposes.
A. It kinda establishes what's going on with Claptrap. The next chapter's gonna go more in dept, but this should do for now.
B. It's a place for me to put some of the back story details for the new Vault Hunters. I know I kinda seem to put a lot of the detail on Hyzin. However, I plan on writing other things based in this universe, and he's only really important because of his connection with Claptrap.
Still, hope you liked the back stories. Next time, we see what Claptrap's up to.
