The second time Levi had another detail towards Petra was a few weeks after the tea incident, when they had to accompany Commander Smith to Wall Sina. It was one of those military meetings that were held every two months, and this time it was the Recon Corps' turn to take care of the event's security. The special operation's squad would take care of it, which was an easy task for them, although a very boring activity.
That day was Captain Levi and Petra's turn to do the night guard. It was in the middle of summer and the weather was hot; the night was expected to be as hot as the whole day, so at 8:40, a few minutes before the night shift, Petra was about to leave her room at the inn where the whole military staff was staying. She verified her uniform's harness and let loose an extra button from her shirt. She didn't even want to think about wearing the uniform's jacket. It was way too hot for that and some fresh air was just what she needed.
As soon as she went out she met Erd, who was holding a rifle on his right hand. He would be taking care of the inn's night guard while her and de Captain would watch over the building here meetings were held.
"Ready for the guard, Petra?"
"Yes, as soon as the Captain comes out, we'll head to the military offices" the girl answered as Erd sighed.
"Yesterday I had to watch the inn too and… truth to be told, it was so boring. The most interesting thing was that woman from the bake house around the corner, who was arguing with her husband"
"At least you were a little entertained"
"Yeah, but I'll be by myself again. And at least you have the Captain. You won't die of boredom"
"Come on, it can't be that bad. Besides, you'll have the morning off tomorrow"
"But still…" and then, the Captain came out the door and the both soldiers saluted him "Sir"
"Keep an eye on this place, Erd. We don't want one of those stupid Military Police to break a nail…" Levi was carrying two rifles on his hand. He handed Petra one of them and handed the other one on his back "ready?"
"Yes sir!" Levi started to walk and Petra followed him.
It wasn't too late, but there were very few people in the streets, so the way to the military offices was quiet and only their foot steeps could be heard on the alleys. It was a lovely and hot summer night without clouds I the sky and the moon was very shiny next to the stars.
"Don't you think it's way too hot, Captain?"
"It' hot as shit" he said as he moved his cravat, intending to get some fresh air inside his shirt.
"Yes… I'm glad I left my jacket at the inn"
"Perhaps I should have done that…" they remained silent for a few moments and when they arrived to their destination, they met Gunter and Oluo. They were eagerly waiting for the shift change "Report?"
"Sir" they both answered.
"Nothing of relevance. The Meeting was held normally and it's been two hours since everyone left to the inn"
"Good. You guys can leave now. We'll take it from here"
Both soldiers walked towards the inn and the night shift started for Levi and Petra. The Captain had the same unexpressive face he always wore, but there was something different. Perhaps it was the hot weather or that he had to work at night… but he seemed relaxed.
They spent the next hours chatting and watching over the building. The night guard was a really easy and monotonous task but neither of them were complaining; Lei was very interested on Petra's opinions about the outside world, as well as her illusions to see the world outside the walls and beyond the expedition's reach.
It was past midnight and the temperature started to go down. The fresh air moved Petra's hair.
"It feels so nice to have some fresh air after all that heat"
"Yeah… I just hope the weather doesn't get any colder" the Captain answered as he looked to the starry sky.
"I don't think so, it's summer and…" she stopped talking after seeing the Captain's glare "You think it will be colder later on?"
"My experience says it's possible."
Some minutes passed by and the temperature kept doing down. Petra regretted leaving her jacket in her room and the only thing she could do was completely button her shirt.
The wind was blowing and she did her best not to shiver; she didn't was to show any weakness in front of her Captain, but he was staring at her. Levi hadn't taken off his eyes from her for the last couple minutes, and she didn't know why.
"You shouldn't have left your jacket"
"I know… I didn't think…" she looked at the floor, thinking of some excuse.
"Tsch…" he took off the rifle off his back and got closer to Petra to give her his jacket "I don't want you to get sick"
"But… what about you?" she hesitated before taking the jacket.
"I'm used to it" he made a pause and felt something more than sympathy towards the girl; something different that he couldn't name "hurry! put it on before it gets colder"
Petra put the jacket on and she felt warmer with its contact with her body and the cold disappeared instantly, partly because she covered herself and partly because the Captain's lotion smell was so nice and it felt so good when she felt it around her, embracing her in the middle of the cold night. It was as if he was holding her and Petra's mind started to fly way as her cheeks turned pink
The night shift continued peacefully and they kept talking the whole night, but something changed. It was like an invincible barrier between them had disappeared and now they felt closer to each other. Petra could have sworn that a tiny smile was drawn on the Captain's face while she told him about her many difficulties with the 3DMG during her academy time.
Something was running around Petra's head that day when Levi brought her tea and after he lend her his jacket, the mental noise was louder and harder to ignore, and something similar was happening to Levi too.
