He had to fend for himself now.
He had no parent he could rely on, his mother had left him behind and his father preferred the oblivion of a drunken stupor to spending any time actually looking after his son.
He couldn't risk believing that there would be food on the table, that he would have somewhere safe to sleep every night, that he could trust anyone except himself...
He'd have to find some way to make enough money to keep himself in food, shelter and clothes...
He just hoped his sister was much better off than he was.
