"Now. You will all die. Including you Gilgamesh." Ishtar smirked floating in the black sky. Her eyes started to glow a deadly crimson and her hair began to float in the air. She raised her right hand and summoned a dark purple ball of energy and aimed it directly at the head of the palace. Gilgamesh looked up to see that Ishtar's attack had begun. The palace shook violently with pieces of dust falling onto the polished marble floors. Gilgamesh had put up a barrier to protect his home. Ishtar laughed at the attempt he made but knew she could demolish the barrier in no time. Ishtar raised her hand again and emitted waves of dark energy at the barrier cracking it. Gilgamesh's army was waiting for her to do so with catapults, arrows and bombs ready to defend the palace. Once Gilgamesh was able to place everyone downstairs, he made his way up to the battle field with Enkidu, Salenj, Leucothea, Pallas, Tritonis and Oceanus by his side.
"FATHER!" Urnungal yelled out chasing behind him. Gilgamesh gave the single for the others to go ahead of him.
"What are you doing? Go back in the basement! NOW!" Gilgamesh demanded.
"I shall fight with you father."
"No. You shall not. I won't allow it."
"Why not?!"
"Now is not the time Urnungal! Do not talk back to me!"
"But…They were my mother and sister too! This is my home too!" When Gilgamesh heard his son's words, he felt a jab in his heart. He knew that his son was right. His son was almost as strong as him but, he feared his son would be no match for Ishtar and her army. The palace continued to shake and rumble with loud roars that sounded like bombs and thunder. Gilgamesh turned his back on his son.
"Do as you wish son." He said taking spirit form leaving his son behind. Urnungal hurried and made his way towards the front of the palace. Ishtar laughed sinisterly as she broke the barrier and attacked Gilgamesh's men. One by one his troops were falling to their demise. Her army was vicious. They were that of dead vengeful souls who wanted revenge on humanity due to how they died or how they were treated in their life time. They ripped and decapitated Gilgamesh's men. Although this was occurring, Gilgamesh's men were putting up a fight. There were still over three thousand troops on the field with 1100 causalities. Ishtar saw the garden where Xura and Ritsunia once spent a great amount of time in. She knew how much Xura loved flowers and that garden. She raised her hand a quickly incinerated it to nothing but ashes. When Urnungal made his way to the front of the palace, he gasped at the destruction. His home was becoming unrecognizable. When he saw the witch floating in the air his eyes turned red with anger, sadness and hate. He wanted nothing more than to kill her and to avenge his mother, sister and his home. Leucothea fought side by side with Tritonis, Pallas and Oceanus using their water based powers to fend off some of the demons. Salenj rode his horse using his bow and arrows to slay demons one by one. Ritharj used his swords beheading the creatures that attacked the palace. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of swords clashing, arrows flying and the screams of mean who were either wounded or who were killed. The cannons and catapults were being fired by the second causing bright orange and red waves of light to appear in the air. Ishtar laughed as Gilgamesh's men tried to send their arrows in her direction. She deflected them all. Just when Ishtar thought she was safe, she felt a strong arm grasp her around her neck and slam her into the ground creating a crater in the floor. When Urnungal saw this, he knew it was his father. Ishtar quickly arose without a scratch on her. She smiled when she saw the tall dignified blonde man float in the air with nothing but hatred and anger in his red ruby eyes.
"My. My. Don't you look well Gilgamesh? Handsome as ever."
"HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU ISHTAR!"
"Dare what love?" She snickered.
"WHAT DID MY DAUGHTER AND MY WIFE EVER DO TO YOU, YOU SINISTER BITCH! DID THEY DESERVE TO DIE THAT WAY!? HUH?! ANSWER ME ISHTAR!" Ishtar chuckled.
"My. I didn't think you would be so upset Gilgamesh dear. I simply put them out of their misery."
"MISERY?!" Gilgamesh yelled as his sacred red tattoos appeared across his body.
"Yes. Misery."
"Was all of this because I didn't marry you? Is that it?!" Gilgamesh roared as his eyes turned a bright red. Ishtar laughed evilly. She loved to see Gilgamesh so angry. It amused her soul.
"Oh. I have a present for you Gilgamesh." Ishtar said as she extended her left hand into the air and summoned a tiny black velvet back. She wrapped it in a dark purple orb and sent it towards Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh snarled at Ishtar and took the bag out of the orb. He watched as Ishtar laughed. He opened the bag and his eyes became that of a monsters. It was Xura's shards. The ones that Ishtar ripped out of her eyes. Gilgamesh dropped the shards on the floor and without thinking charged at Ishtar. He opened his gate of Babylon sending daggers and swords at the witch who deflected each of them with her hands that created a dark purple force field. He sent his swords one by one trying to kill the witch who took away his happiness and joy. The witch who had destroyed his home. He couldn't get to her nor leave a scratch. When Gilgamesh finally let some of his rage die down, he saw an opening. The force field only protected Ishtar in the front, not the back. He sent out more daggers, enough to distract her while he quickly flew behind her taking one of his most powerful swords from his treasury. Ishtar couldn't figure out where Gilgamesh disappeared to which made her extremely nervous. She looked to her left and right through the cloud of smoke. He was nowhere in sight. With all the strength he had, Gilgamesh grabbed Ishtar by her long hair and swung her into the palace walls causing the palace to shake violently. Ishtar groaned in pain as blood trailed down her nose. Her vision was blurry and she couldn't see Gilgamesh charging at her. Enkidu used his chains of heaven to grab the witch and restrain her. He too had a look of hatred in his eyes. His green hair was flowing in the wind waiting for his friend to deliver the final blow. Gilgamesh's sword started to rotate as he pointed it at Ishtar. The sky began to crackle with lightening and red thunder bolts. The ground began to shake throwing Gilgamesh's men and Ishtar's army of fiends off.
"This is for my daughter, my wife, and my home you scum. Now be gone!" Just when Gilgamesh was about to activate his Enuma Elish he noticed that Ishtar was dissolving into nothing but a puddle of mud. Enkidu's chain quickly fell to the ground with nothing but mud on them.
"What the hell?" Enkidu said confused. Gilgamesh was just as confused.
"You stupid man!" Ishtar laughed as she floated in the sky.
"BUT…..HOW?!" Gilgamesh asked. Just then, Ishtar sent a wave of dark vines and thorns towards Gilgamesh and Enkidu trapping them. She had each of them wrapped around their neck suffocating them slightly. Gilgamesh couldn't move nor summon his Gate of Babylon. It was like her thorns were blocking any mana or any magical activity. Ishtar floated towards Gilgamesh until she was directly in front of him. Her skin was a ghostly pale and her eyes were soulless.
"Now you shall join your wife and your daughter in the next life." With that being said, Ishtar pierced her arm threw Gilgamesh's chest and ripped out his heart laughing while doing so.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Enkidu yelled trying to break free from her thorns. It was no use. Ishtar licked Gilgamesh's blood as his eyes became lifeless. She let go of both Enkidu and Gilgamesh retracting her thorns. They both fell to the ground. Enkidu quickly stood up and charged at Ishtar in anger attacking her with his chains of heaven. Ishtar extended her thorny vines once more and pierced Enkidu's leg restricting him and causing him to scream in pain. She looked at Gilgamesh as he slowly laid dying. She squeezed the heart that was in her hands until it was nothing but red juice. Urnungal made it too late and was in disbelief at what he saw. He felt numb and cold. His mind went blank as he slowly approached his father that laid on the cobble stone path that was once filled with flowers. He saw the hole in his father's chest and fell to his knees beside him sobbing.
"Urn…un…gal….." Gilgamesh somehow muttered to his son. Urnungal pulled his father in his lap and saw that his eyes were slowly dying out. They were fading to a bright hazel color.
"Father! Please! Don't speak!" He said as he sobbed knowing that this was his father's end. Gilgamesh smiled taking his first born son's hand.
"Rule over Uruk. Take care of our city. O...O…k?" Gilgamesh trembled. He was cold. Urnungal sniffed and nodded his head not hiding the river that strolled down his cheeks."
"I shall." He replied to his father's dying wish.
"Good. I'm…I'm….R…really. Glad…Son. That…I had you for ….a so—"With that being said, Gilgamesh took his last breath of air and closed his eyes. Enkidu began to wail from the grief of losing his dearest friend and the pain in his legs.
"Father?" Urnungal shook his father trying to wake him up. It was no use. He was dead. Urnungal screamed in grief. "Not you too father! No!" He cried placing his forehead upon his fathers. His hands and clothing were stained with his father's blood. As he touched his father's face, he stained it with blood. He cried and cried not knowing what to do.
"Ha-ha." Ishtar giggled floating above Urnungal. Urnungal looked up and saw the witch that had killed his family. "Now it is your turn, young prince of Uruk." Ishtar said as she extended her thorns towards Urnungal. Urnungal was so numb he didn't care if he died.
"NO!" Enkidu yelled helplessly. Just when he thought Urnungal would join the rest of his family in the afterlife, there was a sudden pink and gold light that appeared between Urnungal and the witches' thorns. A gold and pink orb covered Urnungal, Enkidu and Gilgamesh's body stopping Ishtar's attack which frustrated her. She couldn't get through. Urnungal was in a white vortex staring blankly at his father's body. He was still letting streams of water fall down his face.
"Urnungal." He heard a soft voice call out to him. His eyes widened at the familiar sound. That sweet gentle voice. It was so soothing and so calm.
"M-mother?" He asked looking around the white space. Soon enough Xura appeared before her son with Ritsunia beside her. Their ghostly beauty was overwhelming. When he saw his mother and sister, he began to sob.
"Stop crying you big baby!" Ritsunia said placing a hand on her brother's shoulder. He couldn't help it, the pain was unbearable. Xura opened a golden orb in her hand and kneeled down in front of her son.
"What is this mother?" He asked sniffing.
"Take it. Trust me." Without a second guess, he took the golden orb with his bloody hands and it disappeared.
"Where did it go? What is it?" Xura smiled.
"It will be useful to you son. I promise you. Now look at me. You mustn't cry for me, your sister nor your father. Ok?"
"How could I not?" He asked as his voice cracked.
"Because Urnungal." Ritsunia said hugging her brother. Xura did so as well. They both spoke together at the same time.
"Death is only the beginning. Now fight." With their final words being said the marble disappeared. Enkidu had passed out from the pain and Ishtar covered her eyes as a strong golden light surrounded the palace. And blew away her thorns. Urnungal stood tall and dignified just like his father. He wasn't covered in blood anymore. He was now adorned in a golden toga that accented his tanned skin. He too bore the same tattoos that his father once had. His hair was pulled back and was a gold that was so bright it outmatched the desert sun. His eyes were dignified and redder than ever. In each of his hands he held a golden blade. The energy that was coming from the young teenage boy was way too much. Ishtar watched as the boy stood still. Urnungal had never felt so much power before in his life. That golden orb was truly a great gift he received from his mother.
"Thank you mother. I will fight." He said as his red eyes locked on Ishtar. "I will fight and avenge all of you!" he said as he charged into the sky. Without realizing it, golden wings sprouted from his back and he charged at Ishtar. She quickly summoned a black sword and defended herself from Urnungal's devastating blows. She was able to deflect each blow but it wasn't enough. Urnungal had cut Ishtar's hair off leaving her with a bob cut. She screamed seeing her hair fall to the ground and summoned her thorns and sent them to strangle Urnungal. His golden wings helped him dodge each thorn that tried to grab him and he used his swords to cut each of them down. Ishtar screamed in annoyance as the young man was left untouched. He used his wings to send out a huge wave of wind that slammed Ishtar into the palace once more. He quickly flew towards her and used one blade to stab her in her stomach.
"THIS IS FOR MY SISTER!" Just then a picture of Ritsunia's smiling face appeared in Urnungal's mind causing tears to well up in his glowing red eyes. He then used the blade in his left hand to inflict another wound in Ishtar's stomach. "THIS IS FOR MY MOTHER!" He said as Xura's face appeared before him as well. Ishtar laughed at Urnungal's attempt to kill her.
"Foolish boy. Did you forget that I am a goddess?" She said as thorns appeared behind Urnungal waiting to suck him in.
"I did not." Just then a familiar warp hole appeared in the sky which caused Ishtar's eyes to widen in horror and disbelief. Urnungal grabbed Ishtar by her neck and slammed her into the palace grounds using each blade to pierce her arms into the ground. The witch screamed in agonizing pain as he did so. He stared at her with disgust and hatred and let out his final tears. "THIS IS FOR MY FATHER! GATE OF BABYLON!" with those words, Urnungal sent forth dozens of blades dismantling Ishtar easily. When the smoke had finally cleared, all that was left was Ishtar's chopped up remains. Urnungal used his golden blades and cut Ishtar's heart out making sure there was no way for her to revive. He stepped on it until it was nothing but a puddle of black juice. It was over. Ishtar was no more. Her army of fiends turned into black smoke that rose into the air and disappeared. Salenj was out of breath.
"Is it over?" He asked Ritharj.
"I guess so." Ritharj said holding his wounded abdomen. Just then the sky had broken into tears. The rain water was clearing away the blood that had been shed that night. Urnungal looked up into the sky and saw his family floating above him. He smiled at all three of them.
"Well done son." Gilgamesh smiled. Soon enough, Xura, Ritsunia and Gilgamesh had faded into the black sky. Urnungal's golden wings disappeared as well as his golden attire. He was exhausted and fell to his knees.
"I have avenged you all." He said before passing out on the cobble stone floor. Although he wasn't conscious enough to do so, the rain washed away all of Urnungal's grief and sorrow.
Twenty Years later
Pitter pat! Pitter pat!
"KNOCK IT OFF! OR I'M TELLING DADDY!" A young girl with tan skin and dark violet hair yelled at her twin brother.
"GO AHEAD! I DARE YOU!" A young boy with golden hair and red dignified eyes yelled back at his sister.
"What's going on you guys?" A beautiful woman with a fair complexion and amber eyes asked. Her hair was dark and wavy. She was placing food on the picnic blanket in front of the sacred burial temple.
"It's only Xura and Gilgamesh again. They always fight." A teenaged girl who resembled her mother greatly sighed as she continued to draw a picture. Her dark hair had golden strands in it and it was tied in a bun on top of her head. She had a tan complexion as well.
"I don't know what I am going to do with them."
Twenty years had passed since the battle of between Ishtar and Urnungal. Twenty years had passed since the death of Gilgamesh, Ritsunia and Xura. Uruk was beautiful as ever and no one would ever think that the city was almost reduced to rubble. It was spring and the cherry blossom trees were blooming in full throughout the city. Urnungal couldn't understand how since Uruk was in a desert region but knew that it was due to his family in the heavens above placing their blessings upon the city of Uruk. The palace was damaged during the battle but with the help of the town's people and surrounding cities who offered their aid with no repayment, the palace was rebuilt in a new splendor. It gleamed brightly with gold and amethyst. The garden was restored and was even bigger and more beautiful than ever.
"Aunty?" The young teenaged girl called out to a woman who appeared to be in her forties.
"Yes Ritsunia?" She answered.
"Where's father, Enkidu and Udul?" Syria smiled as she gathered flowers for her deceased family members. She was tying them in a bouquet.
"They're both probably inside praying and paying their respects."
"Oh." Ritsunia said as she stood up and made her way into the royal burial chambers.
"Where are you going dear?" An elderly women whose hair was now grey asked with a sweet croaky voice. "It's almost time to eat."
"With father! I'll be back." Alia smiled.
"She reminds me of Xura. Doesn't she Syria?"
"Yes. She's a lot like he grandmother." Syria smiled letting her dark hair blow against her brown skin. Ritsunia ran into the temple that was surrounded by flowers and made of white marble and stone. On the outside of the chamber, the words "the royal family lie here" were inscribed. The tomb were protected by guards constantly keeping away any tomb raiders or anyone who wanted to cause harm to the temple. As the young beauty made her way up the stairs to join her father, brother and Enkidu she admired the murals of her grandfather, grandmother and aunt that was on the wall. She smiled at the elaborate paintings and continued to make her way up the stairs holding her lime green dress. She pushed the golden door open silently and saw that her father, brother and Enkidu had just finished praying. She saw three golden caskets with new flowers on top of each. She bowed down in front of the statue of the goddess of the dead and said the prayer that was always to be said before entering a tomb. She then quickly joined her father and brother.
"I'll be outside." Enkidu said using his cane to help him down the stairs. He hadn't aged one bit. Ritsunia looked at the portraits that were placed on each casket. She heard many wonderful stories about the people inside the caskets and was disappointed that she never had the chance to meet them. She stared at her grandmother's portrait, her father's portrait and her aunt's portrait. Her aunt and mother were beautiful and her grandfather was extremely handsome. She forgot to bring flowers so she quickly took the three flowers that were placed in her bun out of her hair and placed one on each casket and said a quick prayer.
"So. This is grandpa father?" A young man boy with dark hair and red eyes asked his father.
"Yes Udul. It is." Udul was only twelve years old. Urnungal had aged but still looked fairly young due to the genetic makeup of the Gods. He had grown facial hair along his chin line and now had a mustache. His body was still well toned and his skin was tanned from the desert sun. His mystical eyes shined brightly in the candle lit room and his golden hair was pushed back and spiked up similar to his father's hair style.
"One day you will become the king of Uruk since you are the eldest son. You will rule over this land and protect this city just like me and your grandfather before me."
"What was he like father?" Udul asked holding his father's hand.
"He was a strong man. Kind but a great ruler. He truly loved his family. He was one of the strongest men that has ever lived in the world."
"Well! One day! I'm going to be strong like you and grandfather Gilgamesh! Just you wait father!"
"I look forward to it son. Now let's get back. It's almost lunch time. We will come back later." He said taking his sons hand.
"Yummy! Lunch!" Udul yelled. "Come on Sunia! Mother probably made really good sweet buns and sandwiches. I'm going to eat them all!" The young boy said letting go of his father's hand running out of the burial chambers.
"Oh no you're not!" Ritsunia said trailing behind her younger brother. Urnungal smiled. He truly had wished that his mother, father, and sister was alive to see the generation after him. Just when Urnungal was going to leave the chamber, he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around at the familiar feeling. He smiled when he saw three familiar faces. It was Xura, Gilgamesh and Ritsunia.
"Well done son. I am proud of you. You are a great ruler of Uruk." Gilgamesh spoke to his son.
"Yes and our grandchildren are beautiful!" Xura smiled happily. "We are proud of you." Ritsunia smiled. Urnungal smiled and hugged his family. They felt so real despite their ghostly appearance. Urnungal stepped back and looked at his family. He smiled.
"Go! You have children and a wife to attend to!" Gilgamesh barked.
"Yes! We'll always be with you so don't worry brother!" Ritsunia chimed.
"Thank you guys." Urnungal smiled. He turned his back on his sister, mother and father exiting the chambers. When he reached the doorway and turned around again, they were gone. The only thing that could be seen was three golden caskets draped with lilies, roses, daisies and tulips.
They were ok. Urnungal knew that nothing could ever harm them again and that they were the ones who were keeping him and his family safe. He smiled and left the burial chambers closing the door behind him joining his wife, children, Alia, Enkidu, and Syria outside. His mother and sister were right.
Death was only the beginning.
