On the Road Again
Chapter 36
Snow Angels
My skis threw up a fountain of powdered snow, crisp and sparking in the sunlight. A shift to the right sent up another cold fountain, blowing back over my tracks. The winter wind cuts my cheeks, the hard blue sky emotionless and still. Bend my knees and lean left leaving a curling path behind down the mountainside.
I had struggled to get here, planes delayed; car chunking along with chains mimicking sleigh bells, hard, cold winter streets dressed half in snow and half in freezing slush. More struggling to the top of the mountain, hauling equipment, and waiting for the lift but finally, finally, reaching the top.
I am flying now. I'm alone with only the wind freezing my ears, flying solo down a cool, lonely mountain. This is what makes it all worth it. This is where I wanted to be.
Far downhill I see a rabbit crossing my inevitable path. Hop it, bunny. You better haul it because I won't stop. Get your furry tail across the slope. What is this? Some rabbit version of playing chicken? Are you trying to beat the train? Stupid rabbit in my path, you better run.
I'm still flying but movement in the trees catches my eye. Is this why the rabbit ran; hurling its body out into the path of danger?
There are two bundled lovers making out against a tree. I'm gaining on them swiftly when the shorter one backed up against the tree trunk pushes the bigger one over on his back. There's laughter on the wind and the one in the snow starts flapping his arms and legs, making a snow angel. As I flash past the shorter one throws down next to the first and starts making an angel of its own. I'm almost gone, streaking past, but the laughter follows me downhill until the wind whips it away and tosses it into the sky.
