"Finish that drink. Let's dance."
The words were barely out of Fin's mouth before he was taking the drink from her hand and placing it on the bar. She didn't particularly want to dance, but she knew they had to. The point wasn't to blend into the crowd, but to stand out. And they definitely weren't standing out buried in the crowd next to the bar. Fin moved so he was standing behind her and wrapped one arm around her waist, startling her slightly. He put his mouth next to her ear. "Let's go get us some attention."
As they walked towards the dance floor, Olivia tried to spot the couple they were tasked with keeping tabs on. The idea was that with ten undercover "couples', no one would be able to keep track of everyone, so they were each assigned one couple. That way, when the men go separated from their "date", as they were supposed to do, someone else would be watching as well.
Just as Olivia spotted Jerome and Nikki on the dance floor, Fin whispered into her ear again.
"There they are."
Olivia nodded in response, letting him know that she saw them too. Fin didn't respond. He just kept steering her onto the dance floor, pushing her through the mass of bodies. She kept running into people and it was on the tip of her tongue to apologize, but no one seemed to even notice, and she knew they wouldn't hear her anyway.
They were getting close to Jerome and Nikki when Fin stopped abruptly. He pulled her back against him and twirled her around to face him. The music was deafening, and now that they were even closer to the speakers, it was causing her body to thrum. She looked over at Fin and he was dancing, and she realized that he must frequent these kinds of dance clubs often because he fit right in. She realized, not for the first time, that she knew very little about Fin's private life. And she also realized that she was way out of her element. She didn't dance…she didn't go to nightclubs like this. She was more of a neighborhood bar with a glass of cold beer kind of girl. She'd thought she could wing it but she really wasn't prepared for what she saw on the dance floor.
"Just move." Fin said, obviously losing patience with her standing in place.
Olivia started to sway a little to the music, but she kept scanning the crowd. It was a solid mass of people and she realized this was never going to work. It seemed that there were hundreds of people in the club. To think that twenty undercover cops could keep an eye on everything happening here…or that any one of them would draw any attention with all of the beautiful women dressed to the nines and showing lots of skin…it was insane.
Olivia put her hands on Fin's shoulders and pulled herself closer to him.
"This is insane." She whispered loudly in his ear. "How are we supposed to stop anything from happening?"
Fin put his hands on her waist and leaned in. "We have to do our best." He released her then, and she started to move with the music a little as it changed once again. It was hot out on the dancefloor and she could feel perspiration beading at her hairline and at the small of her back. It was an effort to stay with him, as bodies moved around her. One minute, Fin was in front of her, and the next she was turned and dancing with someone else, or sandwiched between two bodies she didn't know. It was a crazy mix of men and women…music and lights…and every passing minute was causing her anxiety to ratchet higher as she completely lost track of him. And Jerome and Nikki. She was trying to disentangle herself from a young guy that had pulled her back against his body when she saw Fin. He grabbed her arm and pulled her towards him, and started tugging her to the edge of the dance floor.
When they had cleared the dance floor, Fin paused, giving her an opportunity to catch her breath. Fin must have seen her dazed expression.
"You OK?" he asked.
"This is crazy." Olivia yelled over the din. "There are way too many people here."
"Typical Saturday night." Fin said. He took her hand and started to move towards the back of the club. "Time to rotate." He said, apparently unfazed by the heat and sound…and general chaos.
Olivia could barely hear him, but she did hear the word rotate. She remembered that they'd be assigned different locations in the bar, rotating through them to put fresh eyes on everyone, and making sure any exits were covered. Luckily, there were only three ways in or out. The front door, an emergency exit off to the side of the dance floor, which was locked and alarmed until an actual emergency, and a rear exit out the back. There was a long, darkened hallway that led to the rear exit, and it was a frequent hangout for people that wanted a little more 'privacy'.
Olivia had lost track of time so she was glad Fin was on top of it. She turned around and Fin dropped his hands from her waist. She couldn't believe it, but it seemed like even more people had entered the bar. She made a mental note to call the Health and Safety Dept. This had to be a fire code violation. She used her hands to push her way through the bodies until she reached the bar. She turned her back to the bar, but saw that Fin wasn't behind her. She scanned the crowd, but it was a solid wall of people.
"Hey there. You need a drink?" Olivia looked to her left as someone trailed a hand down her arm, resting it lightly at her waist. She was looking at a man that actually looked like a younger version of Fin, and it caused her to hesitate for a second; as if her mind was playing tricks on her.
"Do I know you?"
Her comment was met with a laugh. "Not yet." He yelled over the din. "But I'd like you to." He gave her a wide smile and Olivia looked away, scanning the crowd for Fin again. The cop in her wanted to stomp on his foot and twist his arm, but she knew she couldn't make a scene. She had to let this play out. She didn't really think this was the perp, but if it ended up that he was, she didn't want to be responsible for letting him attack someone else.
She turned into him, taking a step back so he was forced to drop his arm. "Sure." She said with a smile. "I'll have a mojito." She looked up and gave the bartender a smile, glad to see if was their undercover cop. He'd give her another virgin cocktail.
"So…what's your name?"
She gave him a quick smile. "Rachel."
"Victor." He reached for her drink as the bartender held it out, and Victor handed it to her. "I don't think I've seen you here before." He said, leaning in to talk into her ear. "I would remember."
Olivia moved her head away from him and smiled with her lips pressed together. "I haven't been here before."
"Well then, this is my lucky night." He leaned in again. "How about we go someplace a little more quiet so we can get to know each other?"
Olivia's mind was reeling. This guy moved quickly. She wasn't getting any weird vibe from him…just seemed like a typical young man in a bar, trolling for sex. Still…she wished she knew where Fin was. "Sure." She assumed he was taking her out towards the back exit, and she knew another UC couple was waiting there, waiting for she and Fin to take their place.
Victor wrapped his arm around her waist and started leading her down the length of the bar. She turned her head, trying to look for Fin again. Victor handed her the drink she'd abandoned and pushed them through the crowd.
They moved through an archway and went down a few stairs to get into the back hallway, and Olivia was surprised to see how many people were there. The space was dimly lit…although it wasn't that much different than the rest of the club. But there were no strobe lights and the music was more of a heavy beat in the background. There were groups of people talking…other people kissing and grinding against each other…and others entering and exiting the restrooms. All of this among extra tables and chairs piled sporadically along the walls. She looked around, trying to spot the other undercover couple they were to replace. She didn't see them, but she hoped they saw her. Victor stopped her when he found an empty space in the crowd, and before she knew it, he had her pushed up against the wall. He had one arm extended, caging her slightly.
"Don't want you to get crushed." He said, as if reading her mind and explaining his actions. "Drink up." He tapped lightly on her glass.
Olivia gave him a small smile and took a long sip of her drink. She choked slightly when she realized this one had alcohol in it, and she cursed at her own stupidity. She didn't know if the bartender had messed up or if Victor had slipped her a drink that wasn't hers.
Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
"You come here with some friends?" Victor asked, his eyes roving from hers down to her lips and back up again.
Olivia nodded, trying to figure out what her next move should be. She needed to figure out who this guy was…if he was one of their guys…or get the hell out of there.
Victor rubbed the back of his fingers up and down her cheek. "Well I'm glad you did or I wouldn't have had a chance to meet you." He grinned. "You're so damned beautiful."
Olivia bit back a smile. This guy obviously thought he was smooth. She wondered if any of his "charm" ever really worked on anyone. She was feeling pretty confident that this was not their guy with each passing moment.
Victor's hand moved from her cheek and slid down her arm, brushing the side of her breast until he landed on her waist. "Why don't you finish up that drink so we can get rid of that glass?"
His comment caused her to pause. She assumed his interest in her finishing her drink meant she had been right. It was spiked with something. That raised her suspicions again slight…what better way to sneak someone out without a struggle? Of course, he could just be one of the average lowlifes that used similar tactics on any given night.
She debated how to play it when she saw his eyes glance down at her mouth again and then kept traveling south. He started to move a little closer, but she quickly put a hand on his chest. "Maybe I'd better go find my friends. They're going to wonder where I am." She wanted to see his reaction if she pushed it.
Victor gripped her more tightly around her waist, effectively pinning her to the wall. "But we're just getting to know each other." He said. He leaned in to kiss her, but she turned her head, forcing his lips to graze her cheek.
Victor didn't miss a beat, placing kisses along her jawline until he reached her ear. His fingers dug into her skin at her waist. "Hey baby. Don't be like that." He whispered and Olivia could here a little anger in his tone. He moved his arm off the wall and gripped her chin, forcing her head back to look at him. "Don't be a tease."
Options were running through Olivia's mind as she tried to decide her next move. She pushed against his chest with her free hand as he moved to kiss her again, and she was about to drop her glass or spill the contents on him when she felt Victor being pulled away.
"Who the hell is this bitch?"
Olivia looked up and saw a young woman standing with one hand on Victor's arm and the other gesturing towards her.
"I turn my back for two seconds and you go off with this whore?"
Olivia's mouth dropped open as this woman continued to rant. She was tall…olive skinned and dark eyed…absolutely stunning. And she looked tough as hell. Olivia watched as Victor turned towards they mystery woman, offering platitudes. Olivia bit back a smile as she watched Victor trying to talk his way out of it. He had his hands on her shoulders…and had forgotten all about Olivia.
This wasn't their guy.
Olivia let out a sigh of relief…and of frustration. More time wasted. She slipped down the hallway towards the restroom, slipping inside. It was no less crowded in the small space, and she had to fight her way to get to a stall. Once inside, she took a few deep breaths, thankful for this little piece of real estate. She wished she had a way to communicate with Fin. She felt like she'd never find him now. The best she could do is try to find the couple they were supposed to replace in the hall and hope Fin showed up there.
She finished in the stall and made her way to the sink. She saw a couple of girls looking through some pills in one of the girl's hands and it took everything in her not to go into cop mode. When the girls saw her interest, the one with the pills extended her hand.
"Want some?"
"What is it?" Olivia asked, seeing a variety of sizes and colors.
The girl laughed and shrugged her shoulders, and Olivia shook her head. This place was a nightmare. No wonder it was a target for Narcotics and Vice. She finished up and headed towards the door, pushing it open slowly so she didn't hit anyone. A couple of girls followed her out, forcing her out into the crowd. Olivia started back in the direction of the main part of the club, planning a methodical search of the hall for Fin or any other members of the UC team, when she heard what sounded like a gunshot. She froze, as did everyone around her.
"Was that a gunshot?" she heard a woman next to her ask her friends.
And then she heard it again. The unmistakable sound of two more gunshots coming from the club. The music screeched to a halt and she heard people screaming. Olivia started moving quickly towards the stairs, yelling for people to evacuate. But as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, a mass of people came running through the arch, screaming and yelling. Olivia felt herself being pushed backwards, and she hit the wall roughly, knocking the wind out of her. There was a massive crush of people trying to escape, and someone's arm connected with her face. The back of her head hit the wall, and she felt her legs give out beneath her. Then everything went black.
