Chapter 38
Beep Beep Beep
Spencer squinted his eyes shut as he reached over to shut off the alarm, his brain still in that half-concious state of waking up. He rolled over and reached out his hand to the other side of the bed, his eyes finally snapping open when he found it empty. For a moment he was confused to not find Annie's warm body beside him.
But then he took in his sorroundings and remembered he wasn't in their bedroom and he had fallen asleep alone last night. And suddenly he was wide awake, realizing why he wasn't home and why the spot beside him was empty.
Today was the day. The day he and Annie would finally step up in front of their friends and family to take their vows.
A grin spread across his face as he sat up and stretched his arms high above his head. A look outside the window told him it couldn't be a more perfect day, the sun shining bright, the colored leafs on the trees outside slightly swaying in the light breeze.
Even though they both hated to fall asleep and wake up without each other, Annie had insisted to do things the old-fashioned way and spend the night before their wedding apart. So while she had stayed in their house with her mother, Sarah and Penelope for company, Morgan had picked him up last night and he had spent the night in his guest bedroom.
His stomach fluttered in excitement as he thought of the day ahead of him. A quick look at the alarm beside his bed told him it would still be a couple of hours until he would finally see Annie again. But there was still a lot to do before the moment would arrive. They would first pick up his mom from the psychiatric facility in D.C. where Dr. Norman had arranged for Diana to stay while she was in town for their wedding. She had arrived a few days ago and Spencer was glad it had all worked out. He couldn't imagine getting married without her there.
He had been slightly nervous about her meeting Annie's parents, fearing she might have one of her spells. But they had invited them all over for dinner the other night and it had gone surprisingly well. His lips curled into a small smile when he thought about how excited his mother was about the wedding and even more so about the baby. He hadn't seen her smile and laugh that much in years.
A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts and he called out a quick "Come in!"
"Well good morning there." Morgan grinned at him. "Thought I'd make sure you woke up so you don't miss your own wedding. And I brought this, thought you might need a dose of caffeine." he added, handing him a steaming hot cup. "Sleep well?"
"Fairly, considering it took me an hour to fall asleep." Spencer chuckled.
"Nervous?" Derek asked.
"Kind of." he nodded, feeling that flutter in the pit of his stomach again.
"No need to be." Morgan assured him. "I don't think Annie will bail at the last minute." he added with a laugh.
Spencer's eyes went wide. He hadn't even thought of Annie not showing up, leaving him standing at the altar.
"I'm just kidding Reid..." Derek grinned. "And now you better get out of bed or it'll be her waiting for you."
Annie couldn't wipe the huge grin off her face as she stepped out of the shower and wrapped herself in a large, soft towel. Looking in the mirror, she had to agree with Penelope, her face was practically glowing. She had been afraid she wouldn't be able to sleep the night before their big day but apparently that was the one good thing about getting married while pregnant. She had been completely knocked out by 10 pm and felt wide awake. But still nervous.
But she guessed that was normal, she was getting married today after all. It almost felt a bit unreal. A little less than two years ago she hadn't even known Spence and now she couldn't imagine life without him. And today they were going to make it official and would soon be a family. She was getting married to the strongest, funniest, loveliest and most exceptional man she had ever met. An excited giggle escaped her throat at what not only this day but the future would bring.
She felt a kick inside of her and laughed again, running her hand across her bulging belly.
"I know, you're excited too, aren't you?" she grinned and looked down at herself. She had been doing that a lot lately, talking to their little girl. "But maybe you could keep the kicking and punching down today? Mommy doesn't want to spend half her wedding day running to the toilet because you're using my bladder as a soccer ball." she laughed.
"Are you done in there?" Penelope's voice sounded through the door. "We really need to get going or you'll be late for your own wedding."
"I'll be out in a minute!" she called back and quickly pulled on a pair of sweatpants and a shirt before opening the door.
"Finally!" a grinning Garcia greeted her. "Now, Sarah and your mom already put all your stuff in the car. So we're ready to go?"
Annie nodded her head excitedly as she grabbed her purse from the couch and retrieved her phone. "I think I have everything I need." she glanced at the screen.
"Oh no young lady." Penelope snatched the phone out of her hand. "I know what you're thinking and I won't have it. No communication with your future husband until you walk down the aisle."
"But..." Annie started but was cut off by Garcia shaking her head with a smirk on her face. She pursed her lips as her friend started dragging her towards the door. She knew it was silly but she felt like she needed to send just a short message to Spence, letting him know everything was going to be fine. It just felt weird to not be able to talk to him, even if it was just for a couple of hours. And she knew he would be nervous, maybe even more nervous than herself.
"Alright, alright." she surrendered and threw her hands in the air as they walked towards the car where Sarah and her mom were already waiting. She knew somehow she would find a chance to get her phone back...
Spencer's eyes travelled up and down his body as he looked at himself in the large mirror. He had arrived at Rossi's house an hour earlier, picking up his mom on the way. After looking for a suitable place for their wedding without much success they had finally given in and agreed to let Dave host the celebrations. And he had to admit, it was perfect. He hadn't thought it was possible but the place looked even more perfect and beautiful than it had done on JJ and Will's spontaneous wedding.
Since it was already early fall, a large white tent had been set up in the garden for the reception. The gazebo on the other side of the garden was decorated with what had to be thousands of white and light purple lillies. A carpet of white petals lead up to it through the rows of white chairs. The already changing autumn colors of the leafs on the trees added a stunning contrast to the soft shades of the flowers. Annie had made most of the choices regarding the wedding decorations and he had to admit that it couldn't be more perfect.
But he was still nervous as hell. He was getting married today, and to the most wonderful, caring, funny and beautiful woman in the world. He still couldn't believe his luck. He knew it was silly but he actually missed her, even though they had only spent one night apart and she was only a few rooms away. But of course Morgan and Penelope were guarding the doors like hellhounds, making sure the bride and groom wouldn't see each other before the actual wedding.
He had sent Annie a short text message earlier and even tried calling her but she hadn't answered and she had the sneaking suspicion a certain technical analyst had something to do with it. If she had taken Annie's phone or actually disabled both their cells he didn't know, but he hated that he couldn't reach her. A sudden idea sparked in his head and he quickly wheeled over to the desk to scribble a short message on a piece of stationary.
He had just finished writing when there was a knock on the door and he turned to face the door to see his mother enter the room, a smile spreading across her face when she saw him. Within a few steps she had reached him and bent down to cup his face in her hands and place a kiss on his cheek.
"Spencer... My boy..." she choked out, tears brimming in her eyes. "You look so handsome."
"Are you sure?" he smiled, looking at himself in the mirror again.
"Of course you do." she smiled back. "And you look happy. Happier than I've ever seen you." her voice was cracking again.
"Don't cry mom, save it for later." Spencer chuckled.
Diana smiled again and ran her hand over his head. "I just can't help it, I'm so happy for you. You both. I'm glad that you found a girl like Annie. She loves you so much."
"Have you seen her today?" he asked, suddenly wanting to know if she was alright.
Diana nodded. "I have, and she wanted me to give you this." she pulled out a small piece of paper from the pocket of her blazer and his eyes went wide. "Told me to sneak it past that Penelope Garcia." she chuckled.
Spencer's stomach fluttered as he took the note and unfolded it and saw Annie's handwriting.
Can't wait to be Mrs. Reid. See you in a couple of minutes. Love you!
A grin spread across his face and he carefully put the note into the breast pocket of his tuxedo. His head snapped up when there was another knock on the door and he saw Derek.
"Hey there pretty boy." his best man flashed him a smile. "It's time. Ready to get married?"
"Sure, I'll be there in a minute." Spencer nodded and grasped his mother's hand, pressing the piece of paper with his message into her palm. "Give this to Annie, will you?" he whispered.
Diana stifled a chuckle and winked at him. "I will."
Annie couldn't stop smiling as she continued to stare into the mirror in front of her. Looking up she saw the reflection of her mom's face in the shiny surface.
"You look beautiful honey." Caroline stepped up to her and enveloped her in a hug. "Spencer's eyes are gonna pop out when he sees you." she laughed.
"I hope he likes the dress." Annie looked back at her reflection.
"Of course he will." Penelope's voice piped up from the other side of the room where she, Emily, JJ and Sarah were putting the finishing touches on their light purple bridesmaids outfits.
"You look just adorable with your bump." Emily agreed.
"And your hair looks amazing." Sarah joined in. "And now we should really get going girls and give Annie a few moments with her mom." she grinned and lead the others outside.
Annie's hands fidgeted nervously on the fabric of her dress. She would never have thought she would actually be this nervous. She just hoped Spencer wouldn't be too tense, she knew how jumpy and flustered he'd get whenever he was the center of attention.
"Your dad should be here any minute." her mom snapped her out of her thoughts. "So I think it's time to give you this."
Annie watched as her mother fished something out of her pocket, revealing a delicate white gold bracelet, lined with the tiniest of diamonds.
"Isn't this...?" she started.
"Your grandma's." Caroline finished for her as she took her daughter's wrist and placed the bracelet around it, carefully fastening the clasp. "I know she would have loved to be here today and she would have loved Spence." she continued. "And I know she would have wanted you to have this and wear it on your wedding day."
Annie felt tears sting in her eyes as her fingers grazed the piece of jewellery and she thought of her beloved nana who had passed away a couple of years ago. "Oh mom..."
"Now, now, don't start crying or I will too." Caroline smiled and placed a kiss on her cheek.
They hugged each other for a few seconds before they both turned around when they heard the door open and turned around to see her dad step into the room. Annie's lips currled into a wide smile as her father stopped dead in his tracks.
"So, what do you think?" she asked when he didn't say anything.
Robert stepped up to her and took both her hands in his. "I think my little cupcake is the most beautiful bride I have ever seen." he replied, his voice cracking at the sight of his only daughter in her wedding dress. "Except for you of course." he added with a wink at his wife.
"Is everything ready down there?" Caroline asked and Robert nodded.
Annie took a deep breath as her mother handed her the bridal bouquet and they slowly walked out of the room. Her heart was beating fast in her chest and her legs felt slightly shaky. They were nearing the staircase when Robert suddenly stopped and pushed a piece of paper into her hand.
"I almost forgost, Diana gave me this." he whispered.
Annie furrowed her brows as she unfolded the note, her heartbeat speeding up even more when she recognized Spencer's handwriting. But then her mouth spread into a grin again and her heart skipped a happy beat before a calmness she hadn't expected spread through her body as she read the words:
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.
