Chapter 38: Post OP
I slump in a chair and cry quietly outside the operating room. As soon as we reached the hospital the doctors whisked Richard to the operating room to remove the bullet.
Bullet That words rings in my head as the image of Richard being shot keeps flashing in my mind.
"This is my fault", I said and bury my face into my arms.
"It's not your fault love", I hear a familiar voice say as the wrap their arms around me.
I lift my head and blink through my tears as I see Enzo sitting next to me, "Enzo you came!" I said and give him a hug.
"Of course I did, you sounded devastated on the phone so I jumped out of bed and came here as soon as I could as you can tell by my dashing attire", he said and motions to his pj pants, slippers, and t-shirt and I laugh.
"Now there's a smile" Enzo said, "It was hard to understand you on the phone, so why don't you tell me what happened?" he asked.
I tell Enzo about what happened from when Richard and I got back to the hotel up into the point where Richard got shot.
"Bloody hell, that's quite a story", he said and shakes his head.
"It's my fault, If I hadn't overreacted when I saw Richard and that girl none of this would have ever happened", I said.
Enzo shakes his head, "It's not your fault Kori, and do you honestly think Dick would want you out here blaming yourself? If anyone is to blame it's those low lives that attacked you. Dick is in surgery now but you need to be strong for him", he said.
"Your right", I said as I take Enzo words to heart, "Thanks for coming here Enzo, you're a good friend", I said.
Enzo smiles, "Anytime", he said, "Want me to stay with you until he gets out of surgery?" he asked.
"Please", I said as I sit back in my chair and we begin to wait.
I hear the doors of the operating room open and I jolt awake, the doctor speaks to a nurse before walking over to us.
"Enzo wake up", I said and shake his shoulder.
"Huh what?" he asked confused.
"I think that Richard's surgery is over", I said and Enzo sits up.
"Are you Kori Anders?" the doctor asked.
"Yes that's me", I said.
"Your boyfriend surgery was a success, we were able to remove the bullet, he may experience some discomfort but we expect a full recovery", the doctor said.
I feel a wave of relief wash over me, "Thank you doctor, when will I be able to see him?" I asked.
"He's sedated but he is in the post op wing, you can visit him now if you like", he said.
I get out my seat, "I need to see him please", I said.
The doctor nods, "Right this way", he said and Enzo and I follow him into the post op ring. The doctor opens the door and I walk in and gasp.
Richard is lying in the hospital bed; he looks pale but peaceful under the situation. I immediately sit in the chair next to his bed and reach for his hand.
"I'm so glad you're ok", I said.
Enzo clears his throat, "I guess I will be going home now, do you need me to get you anything?" He asked.
"Do you mind getting some clothes for me at the hotel? I want to be here when he wakes up", I said.
"Don't mind at all", he said.
I hand him the hotel key and give him some instructions, "I'll be back shortly", he said.
"Enzo wait", I said and he stopped, "Why are you doing all this for me?" I asked.
"I lost someone I loved once, her name was Maggie", he said sadly, "No one was there for me when I need them so I want to be here for you", he said.
I get up from where I am sitting and give him a hug, "I'm so sorry", I said.
"Thank you", he said and hugs me back, "I should get going, I'll be back soon", he said.
"Maggie would be proud of you", I blurt out.
Enzo smiles, "I think she would be too", he said before he leaves.
"Kori", I wake up as I lift my head from Richard's bed.
"Kori", he said again in a hoarse whisper.
"Richard", I said in between relief and joy, "Your awake", I said.
"Are you ok?" he asked.
I laugh, "You've been shot, you had a bullet removed from your chest and hand to get surgery and you ask if I'm ok?" I said in disbelief and Richard smiles.
The nurse walks in and checks Richard's vitals and changes his bandages, I excuse myself to use the bathroom and call Enzo.
"Kori, everything ok?" he asked.
"Yea everything is great, he's awake", I said.
"That's good to hear", Enzo said.
I nod, "I just wanted to call and give you an update and thank you for everything, if you ever visit America we should hang out sometime", I said.
Enzo laughs, "Hot dogs and baseball? Sounds interesting", he said.
I roll my eyes, "Now who is stereotyping who", I said and laugh. We talk for a bit more before saying goodbye. I shower and brush my teeth and change into some sweatpants and a t-shirt before exiting the bathroom.
Richard is now awake and lying in bed flipping through channels on the TV.
"Hey", I said.
"Hey", he said, "Who were you talking to on the phone?" he asked.
"Enzo", I said, "I called him when you went into surgery, he's been a really good friend", I said.
"Oh well that's good", he said and I notice a bit of relief instead of jealous in his voice.
I sit in the chair next to him and reach for his hand, "I was so worried Richard, I"
"Kori I'm fine", he said and reaches for my face and brushes a tear off my cheek.
"I know but they thought of losing you devastated me, I couldn't imagine my life without you", I said feeling my emotions spill out of my mouth "I'm sorry for everything, I love you Richard and I want to spend the rest of my life with you so if the offer still stands my answer is yes", I said.
Richard stares at me surprised, "Are you saying what I think your saying?" he asked and I notice a hint of a smile on his face.
I nod, "Yes Richard, Yes I will marry you", I said and smiled.
