Chapter 37

"Luce!" His recognizable voice stops me in my tracks of walking out of Fairy Tail with Levy, "Are you going... to his?" He scratches his head and avoids my gaze.

"Yes, we are." Levy links onto my arm.

"Oh yeah, thanks Levy." He briefly says.

"I'll call you later, okay?" I tell him.

He nods as we start walking away.

"Aw, bless you two." Levy comments.

"What?" I say in confusion.

"Nothing~" She sings.

I start feeling strangely nervous and scared as I knock on the door. I glance back at Levy, who was standing watching further away. She advised me not to go inside but to just talk by the door.

I wait for a few moments, as I eagerly wait for him to open up.

And finally the door swings open and his eyes widen in disbelief.

"Heh," He looks away with an empty laugh, "Really?"

"Sting, please we need to talk." I immediately say before he slams the door in my face or something.

"What's there to talk about?" He asks.

"Why you left? Why you joined Sabertooth?" I shoot questions at him.

"Simple, higher pay." He shrugs.

"I don't believe you." I shake my head, "It's me isn't it? It's because of everything that happened and I-"

"About you?" He resounds, "Blondie, don't flatter yourself."

I stop and straighten my neck backwards.

"But after then you stopped showing up to work..." I murmur.

"Yeah." He just replies.

"Then...What's going on...?" I ask hesitantly, still as puzzled as ever.

"Better pay. That's it." He says so simply.

"No," I shake my head; not believing, "But why all of a sudden, after we - "

"Coincidence?" He suggests, "I don't know."

"But..." I say with disappointment, "I'm sorry."

He sighs, "Did something happen with Natsu?"

"No?" I say in confusion, "I just have to apologize, for hurting you...I - "

"It's too late for that," He murmurs, "Why did you come here?"

"To check if you were okay..." I search for his gaze.

"I'm okay." He says.

"But you didn't answer my calls, you disappeared. Sting, why are you acting like this?" I blurt out.

"You chose Natsu, why are you bothering with me?" He says with a certain harshness.

"But that doesn't change that I care about you!" I say loudly, that he's even asking 'why'.

"What do you want me to say Blondie?" He asks suddenly.

"I just don't want things to be like this, I don't want to lose you -" I say desperately, "As a friend."

"Don't say that..." His eyes soften.

"What about you? Do you want things to be like this?" I ask; trying to find some answers.

"It's better." He says distantly, "Remember you chose Natsu."

"So what? I'm supposed to forget you?" I gape.

"I'm in Sabertooth now, it shouldn't be-" He says in avoidance.

"I don't care, you want me to forget you?!" I say in disbelief.

"It's a good time to move on." He closes his eyes for a moment, "Think about it..."

"So that's why you moved, to move on from me." I state.

"Blondie, like I said," He smirks a little, but not the same as he usually does, "Don't flatter yourself."

"Even so, you can't just disappear like that." I look down solemnly.

"Lucy," His voice changes abruptly and he stares at me directly, "Yeah, I love you. You know that. I've loved you way before he did. I wanted you. But you chose him and I can't wait around like this anymore. Especially when he snatches you away, just like that," His expression is etched with pain, "And every time I see you, I'm reminded. So it's better if I don't see you at all or else I'll start loving you more and more."

He pauses and takes a small breath.

"Blondie, I can't." He says with such ache as his hand caresses my cheek, softly, "Like right now I - "

I then realise the proximity between our faces; between our lips and instead of instantly pulling away, I remain...

In fact he's the one who suddenly pulls back as he pushes me away by the shoulder, "Lucy, I can't do this anymore. I can't go back to how we were before."

"Sting..." I say with glazed eyes.

"Don't cry." He ruffles my hair, "Blondie."

And I try my hardest to blink back the tears, but I can't. To think after all this time...

Tears start running down my cheeks and I cover my face in shamefully as I lean onto his chest tightly, I didn't want him to see me cry for some reason. I just feel too guilty, sad, regretful...

He wraps his arms tightly around me for a moment.

"I'm sorry but," He whispers sincerely with slight regret,

"Next time you cry..." He slowly starts loosening his surrounding embrace, "I won't be there."

"Next time Natsu mucks up..." His grip loosens further, "I won't be there for you."

His arms slide off me as he takes a step back, further into his house.

"Goodbye, Lucy..."

Is the final thing he says before he shuts the door...
