Before either Olivia or Fitz realized it they had signed papers for the house, the house Olivia still hadn't seen. They were set to move in December fourth. Olivia was so excited she had ordered plenty of furniture and they went and picked out a brand new California king bed that Fitz was sure to fit in. Plus beds for all the other rooms. The salesman's eyes lit up when they told them how many beds they needed and he hugged them both when they left.
There had been a few spats mostly about trying to get Fitz interested in decorating than Olivia ordering whatever she wanted without consulting him, but it always ended up with them curled up in bed together after a round or two of make up sex.
This afternoon they were supposed to pick up Claudia, Maya, and Cammie from the airport but Olivia had woken up with the epiphany of how impractical their cars actually were. Neither car would fit all five of them. She thought about just going to buy a new jeep now, but she didn't want to park three cars in front of her already overcrowded apartment building. Instead she rented an Expedition for the week wanting to have a vehicle that everyone could fit in. The flight came in early so they got dressed quickly and went to pick up the SUV.
On the way to the airport Olivia was exhausted. They had been running around like crazy for two weeks between the house, school, and getting food in for all the company they were having she could barely keep her eyes open. Fitz was driving so she curled up in her seat with his coat covering her.
"Grab a quick nap, you know once everyone gets here that chance will go out the window." Fitz was right. Cammie was staying in her office, her mother and sister were staying in a hotel down the street, but they would probably be in her apartment most of the time. She grabbed his hand and held it to her chest as she closed her eyes in an attempt to sleep.
After about ninety seconds she grabbed Fitz's hand eyes wide and looked at him.
"Oh we are so fucked! Shit fuck shit!"
"What's wrong!?" Fitz asked, usually even in a crisis Olivia was pretty calm. He was shocked by her exclamation. He thought something was in the road and nearly slammed on the brakes. Especially after she shook him awake this morning after telling him how irrational they both are and have no business buying a house when neither has a car that can fit more than the two of them in it. She quickly shook off her worries and found a solution, but two meltdowns in one day were completely out of character.
"My mother doesn't know you live with me."
"Okay. That can be easily solved. I mean she doesn't think I'll be sleeping in the guest room in our house."
"She doesn't know about our house. I haven't spoken to her since we left, and the others wouldn't tell her. Oh balls!"
"It'll be fine. She knows you're an adult, I mean I'm sure the age thing will bug her, but she will be fine."
"The age thing?"
"Yeah remember me old man you young coed?" Fitz joked carefully.
"We've only known each other nine months. I don't care and you don't care and she's only met you once and I don't really care about that either and balls!" Olivia continued ranting.
"Okay so we don't tell her?"
"She will know."
"Most of my stuff in the living room could easily be your stuff books and clothes I'll hide."
"No she will just know. She always knows. She will probably make me go to confession or something!"
"Okay I'm kind of out of options here Livvie. Tell me what you want me to do. Do you want me to stay at the hotel too?" He had officially moved out of his apartment slowly, but he's lease had ended last week, he couldn't go back there.
"No!" Olivia stood her ground.
"I'll tell her about the house and she can just deal."
"I'll tell her a joke or something it'll be fine." Fitz assured her.
"You can't her jokes Fitz. You're not funny."
"I know. Wait! I'm funny."
"You're funny, but you're not funny."
"And you are?"
"I'm funnier than you!"
"I love you Livvie."
"I love you too old man." She said finally realizing how foolish she was being. Fitz was right. She's an adult. Her mom would either accept it or she wouldn't. Either way it wouldn't change anything.
"Oh you're a funny woman. You should quit your job. Go on the road."
"Nah I'd miss you too much." By time Olivia had finished freaking out about the possible drama with her mother this week she didn't have time for her nap. Fitz was circling around the airport trying to find them a spot. He had told Claudia they would meet at the gate. They had joked about just sending a driver so Fitz had brought a piece of paper with Pope scrawled across it in big black letters. As annoying as Fitz and Claudia teasing her for a week would be she couldn't be more grateful that they got along so well.
Fitz felt like he'd gained two sisters and two brothers by being with Olivia. He was grateful they welcomed him into the family.
"You ready to deal with the three musketeers and Satan's whore for a whole week?"
"Liv!?" Fitz exclaimed shocked that she would say such a thing, particularly about her mother.
"CeeCee's term of endearment not mine." Olivia clarified. Claudia may have been on better terms but she still had a lot of issues with Maya that would most likely never go away. Fitz laughed and could easily imagine Claudia saying that and worse.
"I'll be fine... Michael and Huck are coming Tuesday right?" He asked desperately. After hearing stories of the antics the three girls got into he knew he was in for some insanity, fun insanity though. Olivia assured him they would be coming with Harrison in tow, to which Fitz made a disgruntled face.
"Aw don't make that face. He's a good guy."
"We'll see." Fitz said in his best protective voice. He had spoken to Michael about Harrison and neither was thrilled with the pairing.
"God help our daughters." Olivia said shaking her head.
"I love it when you talk like that, even if it is at my expense." Fitz told her grabbing her and wrapping his arms around her waist so that her back was flushed to his chest. Olivia looked up and met his lips in a sweet kiss that quickly escalated. Realizing where they were, Olivia pulled away but kept her head facing his. He made a whining noise when she pulled away.
"Later, I promise," she told him placing her hand on his chest. He raised an eyebrow at her, apparently he was the only one that remembered they were having company.
"I'll put some Benadryl in her dinner. It'll be fine."
"Liv!"
"Okay kidding," she told his appalled face, "mostly." She finished under her breath.
"You're shameless!" Fitz laughed, enjoying Olivia's less reserved side. He knew being around her sister and cousin would bring it out, he had seem glimpses in Kansas, but this would be different. Fitz kept his arms wrapped dangerously low around her waist, taking advantage of them being out together and her not standing a foot away from him. Olivia was weighing her chances of squeezing in a nap when they got back to home when she heard Claudia yelling.
"Olly olly oxen free!" Olivia rolled her eyes at her sister, they'll be in their nineties and she'll still find an obnoxious nickname to call her. Fitz loosened his grip so that Olivia could turn around and greet everyone.
"How long did it take you to come up with that one?" Olivia asked as she pulled her sister into a hug.
"Ah it was a short flight."
"Made longer by her insistence on calling me cama lama ding dong the whole time." Cammie said coming up behind Claudia looking exhausted. Olivia raised an eyebrow at the both of them.
"I uh was kind of nervous flying and took a Valium." Claudia told them vaguely embarrassed."
"Or five." Maya said as she made her appearance.
"I'm just bummed that nothing rhymes with jarhead." Claudia said motioning towards Fitz as she brought him in a hug.
"Jarheads are marines. I was in the navy." Fitz told her, confusing the two was the highest of sins in his opinion. Olivia had learned early on that there was a ton of pride there and not knowing the difference between different branches were unacceptable.
"Well nothing rhymes with flyboy either so."
"So we should probably get you home." Maya finished for her. "It's good to see you Olivia." Maya offered while Olivia still had Cammie wrapped up in her hold she had yet to greet her mother. She released Cammie and offered her mother a quick hug, but as soon as Maya loosed her grip Olivia sandwiched herself back between Cammie and Fitz. Sensing her discomfort Fitz placed his hand on his lower back. She looked at him gratefully.
"Mrs. Pope, hope you had a good flight." Fitz said offering his other hand.
"It was fine thank you Fitzgerald." She replied shaking his hand. Claudia rolled her eyes at Olivia after seeing the formal greeting causing Olivia to smile again and feel less tense.
"You guys have any bags?" Fitz asked gesturing towards the luggage carousel.
"Yeah I'll help you." Cammie said gratefully to be heading off with Fitz leaving Claudia, Olivia, and Maya to stand awkwardly together.
"Well aunt Maya is going to make this week as awkward as possible. Glad she's not staying with us, speaking of which thanks for letting me stay with you guys." She told him awkwardly assuming that he wouldn't want the little cousin in his way.
"You don't have to thank me, I'm glad you decided to stay with us!" He figured a teenager would want her own space, not to hangout with her family, but when he saw how excited Olivia was to have her around it instantly made him excited.
"Livvie is so excited about you coming. She's got color palates for you to pick out for your room in the new house."
"She's been busy with that. I swear that's all she's been talking about for weeks. I don't think I've seen her this happy in a while."
"Yeah it seems like such a huge undertaking. I can't believe how calm she is about the whole thing." Cammie and Fitz discussed the house a bit more, Fitz quickly realized that, much like Olivia, Cammie was older than her 17 years.
Olivia watched Fitz walk away chatting with Cammie and instantly missed his presence. She immediately tensed, like she was preparing for battle.
"Thanks for having me for Thanksgiving Olivia. I'm really looking forward to it."
"Uhm yeah not a problem. Fitz didn't really get a ton of family gatherings so he wanted to take make sure we start plenty of traditions." Olivia told her mother wanting to convey that this wasn't her idea. If she had her way the six of them would be headed for a beach, leaving her parents and their drama behind like they usually did.
"Well I'll have to extend my gratitude to him as well." Maya nodded not really know what to say. Things were so strained after Olivia's last... Visit that she didn't want to push any buttons, especially in the middle of a crowded airport.
"Olly?" Olivia heard Claudia and felt her place her head on Olivia's shoulder. She had to duck a bit to get her head there, as Claudia was several inches taller than Olivia. "I think I need a nap." Olivia could see that Claudia was a little stooped and uneasy on her feet. The words nap sounded like heaven to Olivia.
"We can go back to the apartment and catch some sleep." Maya looked at both girls as they silently took care of each other without hesitation. She smiled a little, glad that at least they had each other if she hadn't given them anything else she had done that.
"Oh my god a nap sounds so amazing!" Cammie overheard the end of the conversation and added on. They had an early flight leading everyone to be exhausted.
"I'll pull out the sleeper sofa as soon as we make it in the door." Olivia told them as Fitz came up and bumped her hips not having a hand available. Olivia never felt safer than when she could fall asleep in Fitz's arms, but there was something so calming about falling asleep with her sister and cousin, as if they were kids again.
The drive home had less tension than the greeting as Olivia warmed up a bit to her mother and showed her the grocery list that she had made earlier and asked if she had forgotten everything.
"This is just for the eight of us?"
"Eleven actually, my friend Abby is coming and so is our professor Cyrus and his partner James."
"I still think it's way to much food, you'll be cooking for three days." Her mother warned her. Olivia helped cook holiday dinners but had never really done one herself. "It's a big undertaking."
"I keep telling her to cut back or get a caterer or something, she's stubborn."
"I'm with Fitz and Mom, this list is ridiculous!" Claudia said catching a peek over her mothers shoulder.
"Cammie you're on my side right?" Olivia looked back, hoping for some back up.
"As long as you don't cut back the fried sweet potatoes, I think less stress is better, especially with all these people."
"Traders." Olivia said looking at Fitz and Cammie.
"Okay I'll compromise. Mom would you mind handling the turkey, stuffing and gravy? Yours was always the best anyway. Claudia and Cammie you guys are on pie duty." Olivia's mother smiled at the offering, Claudia grimaced while Cammie was indifferent.
"What about me?" Fitz asked. He wasn't the best cook, but he wanted to help.
"You can do all the heavy lifting as well as your usual household chores will suffice." Olivia slipped him a wink that she hoped no one would catch, but that hope was quickly dashed when Claudia groaned and Fitz's ears turned red.
After they dropped Maya off at the hotel, per her request, the remaining tension in the car left. The short drive back to her apartment was filled with laughs and loud music. Once they made it into the apartment, bags in tow, the four of them immediately changed into more comfortable clothes. By time Fitz made it out of the room he smiled at the sight of Olivia, Cammie, and Claudia curled up together in that order on the sofa bed with Harry potter playing in the background. Even though they were some of Olivia's favorite movies, she had seen them so many times that she would fall asleep if they were on so she always put one of them on to fall asleep.
He walked over to give Olivia a quick kiss before he was planning on heading into the bedroom. She pulled him down by the collar of his shirt.
"Stay!" Olivia asked him sleepily, refusing the let him go.
"It's okay I've got some reading to catch up on, you guys should spend time together."
"You're tired and I can't sleep without you." She pouted a little pitifully.
"Stay flyboy." Claudia said scooting over to the other end of the bed so that Fitz would have room. Unable to say no to her, or really any of the three women in front of him he curled up around Olivia. Cammie was squished in the middle, but not five minutes later she was sound asleep.
"Bet when you thought about being in bed with three chicks this wasn't what you pictured." Claudia said looking over at Fitz. He laughed but before he had the chance to answer Olivia spoke without opening her eyes.
"Don't you dare answer that." Claudia was the next to fall asleep on her back, very much staying to her own side. Olivia followed soon after with one arm wrapped around Fitz and a leg thrown over Cammie just like Claudia had warned.
Fitz looked at where he was, surrounded by the love of his life and her family getting ready to celebrate thanksgiving. He gave Olivia a quick kiss before falling asleep thinking 'This is what having family must be like.' The four of them napped for hours and didn't wake up until Maya began calling their phones round robin resulting in Claudia and Olivia shoving each other that landed Fitz on the floor. The three Popes looked down at his grumpy face and tried to hold back their laughter. He saw the three sheepish faces above him and couldn't help but laugh, while trying to maintain his angry face.
