Chapter Thirty-Eight
So much had happened since the same elevator ride more than a year ago. Back then they had been almost strangers to each other, who had planned to spend their first night together after a not so successful first date. Diane's political and family values had almost held her back from spending the night with the silent cowboy and they wouldn't have been standing there that night if she hadn't thought better of it the last minute.
She wouldn't change that cowboy now for any other man in the world. He belonged to her completely. He was her support, her solace, her companion for life and she never wanted to let him go. A year ago she couldn't have imagined they would have ended up like this. He had been just a man she'd met, found attractive and wanted to spend the night with. Now he was the man she loved, in a way she hadn't felt about any other man before.
They were holding each other's hand while the elevator reached their floor. They had chosen the same room they had spent the night in for the first time, they wanted to consummate their marriage right there. When the elevator stopped they walked up to the room and opened the door, but before Diane could enter Kurt grabbed her arm gently.
"What? Don't tell me you want to carry me over the threshold?" she chuckled.
"That is exactly what I want to do," he replied and before Diane could protest he took her in his arms and carried her inside, placed her on the ground carefully and met her lips in a soft kiss.
"I think this is the moment you waited for," she teased and slipped the jacket of his tuxedo off his shoulders and tossed it on a chair, then reached for his bowtie and removed it from his neck.
"Finally I can breath," he opened the top button of his shirt with a smile.
"I'm sorry," she ran her palm on his cheek with a smile and kissed his lips lightly.
"You on the other hand shouldn't take that dress off yet, I just can't get enough of how stunning you look in it," he looked her up and down and had her turn around to admire her from every angle.
"I can't wait to see all the photos," she said as she stepped to the table with the champagne, "Shall we toast first?" she asked.
"Absolutely," he nodded and moved to the table to pour them from the liquid.
"But you can't say the toast this time. It wasn't fair," she said taking the glass from his hand.
"What?"
"Your speech. You almost moved me to tears in front of all those people. You know I don't do that."
"And you didn't."
"But I was close."
"I just had to mention how much you mean to me."
"I have always known that," she held his gaze as she took his hand in hers, "And you have to know how much you mean to me," she smiled.
"I know," he kissed the back of her hand softly.
"I haven't prepared a speech - yours was wonderful by the way - but I'd like you to know that I think you are just as wonderful, handsome, smart and funny. You've also had me under your spell from the moment you first smiled at me and I never want that smile to leave your face. I love making you laugh, I love arguing with you and making up afterwards. I love falling asleep in your arms and waking up next to you every morning. I love how you're so strong but still let me believe you need me. How was the next part?"
"I'm impressed, you've memorized all this?"
"Didn't you say you love that I am smart?" she teased.
"I love you, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me," he repeated the lines she wanted to hear again.
"That's just wonderful, did you find it online?"
"Yes, unlike the rest of the speech I've written myself," he pointed out with a smile.
"I love you, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. Thank you for making my life complete," she sealed her words with a kiss.
"So where is your speech?" he teased and she chuckled against his lips.
"I can offer you something better," she let go off his hand and moved away, "You better burn this memory in your mind, because next time you see me I won't be wearing this dress," she smiled and turned around once more before she disappeared in the bathroom.
She took off the dress, folded it carefully and placed it on the towel rack. Then opened the bag she'd hidden there before and changed into the red lingerie she'd bought for this special occasion. When she walked back into the room she found Kurt sitting on the bed, waiting for her and his eyes widened as he spotted her.
"Wow, and here I was suggesting you shouldn't take that dress off. That was kind of foolish," he reached out for her as she got closer to the bed.
"You should see your face," she chuckled and let him pull her close for a kiss.
"I wouldn't make the same mistake twice, but I think we leave this on you until I get rid of my clothes first.
"Let me help you with that," she offered and climbed on the bed over him and started unbuttoning his shirt.
