Rizzoli & Isles:

Chapter 38

"You're Not One of Them"

A/N: Okay, so I'm just barely making my deadline. LOL.

But okay, so I really didn't have time to post last month sorry. And also, I finally have an update for Chapter 35: Daddy's Home. (That's the Ian chapter for those who don't remember.) I fixed some things I didn't like with it. I made some small changes. So, I hope it reads smoother. It's about 90 percent the same as before, with some minor touches and edits. I couldn't change too much, without it affecting the chapters that follow it. It's not supposed to be a likable chapter, I know. But it is what it is.

This chapter however, is long. And it's got a lot of things going on in it, so, I hope it reads smoothly too.

MAURA'S HOUSE – KITCHEN (MORNING)

Maura pours two cups of coffee, and brings one over to Jane; who's at the kitchen island, smearing cream cheese onto two bagel halves.

JANE: (After receiving her coffee) "Thanks."

Jane takes a sip of her coffee, as Maura grabs one of the bagel halves, and takes a bite off it.

Jane smiles at Maura.

JANE: "Good?"

MAURA: (Pleased) "Mm-hmm."

Jane laughs.

JANE: "So, I've been thinking about taking James to the batting cages after school. You know, get him some practice hitting. Since my arm hasn't been all that strong lately, to throw some hard balls at him."

MAURA: "That's fine. I'm sure he'd enjoy it."

JANE: "Well, I just want him ready. You know, tryouts are tomorrow. And I don't want him freaking out, out there. I want him to feel comfortable batting."

MAURA: "I'm sure, he'd be fine Jane. And he's just a kid. I don't want you putting too much pressure on him."

JANE: (Beat) "No, I'm not. Like I said, I just want him to be ready. And I want him to know what to expect out there."

MAURA: (Firm nod) "Good. There's more to life than just baseball."

Jane playfully gasps in horror.

JANE: (Pretends to be offended) "Maura. How can you say such a thing?"

They both laugh.

FROM THE STAIRS…

James excitingly rattles down the steps, shoes on, backpack over his shoulder, fully ready for school.

He makes his way into the kitchen. Jane notices him first.

JANE: (Happily) "Hey Jame, ready for school."

In the background, Maura gingerly grabs Jane's coffee mug from the island, and turns towards the counter.

JAMES: "Yeah."

JANE: "Great. Let me just get my –"

Jane turns to her side, as Maura happily presents her coffee, now in a to-go thermos. Maura read her mind.

Jane smiles as she happily receives it.

JANE: "Thank you."

MAURA: (Smiling back) "Your welcome."

Jane kisses Maura and finishes up her last piece of bagel. Jane then reaches for her pocket for her wallet.

JANE: "So, 4 bucks for lunch."

Jane pulls out some money for James' lunch. When James looks on conflicted.

JAMES: "Can I have two dollars more?"

Jane pauses, and stares at him.

JAMES: "I wanna buy a coffee cake and some milk during recess."

Jane eyes Maura, as if quietly asking for permission. Maura nods her okay.

JANE: "Alright. 6 it is." [Hands it to him] "But, don't be going off spending it on junk food, okay. I better not find you munching on any candy later on."

JAMES: "I won't. I promise."

JANE: "Okay." [Motions with her hands] "Off we go."

James goes over to his mother and hugs her goodbye. Maura hugs him back with a "have a great day at school" to him.

Jane also heads over to Maura for a goodbye hug and a kiss.

JANE: "See you at work." [Kisses Maura again] "Later."

MAURA: "Bye. Drive safely."

JANE: "Will do."

Jane and James head out. Maura smiles, watching them go.

JAMES' SCHOOL – DAY – (LUNCH TIME)

James walks through the crowded cafeteria with a standard lunch tray of food and a chocolate milk. He approaches his usual lunch table, where Josh and Chris are already sitting at.

He places the lunch tray on the table in front of Chris.

CHRIS: "Hey, thanks man. I owe you."

James smiles proudly. Happy to help his new friend out by buying him lunch, with the extra money he got from Jane.

JAMES: "No problem. I'm happy to help." [Looks over at the cafeteria windows] "Imma go get my food."

James says as he leaves the table.

Chris picks up his school made pizza from his tray and starts eating. Enjoying eating lunch like the other kids.

CHRIS: (To Josh) "Hey, guess what man?"

JOSH: "What?"

CHRIS: "I'm going to be able to tryout tomorrow after all."

JOSH: "Yeah? How? Did your dad get a new job?"

CHRIS: (After sipping his milk) "Nah. But, my dad talked to the league, and they said that I can still tryout, even if we can't pay. They said that they don't turn anyone down, who can't afford it."

JOSH: "That's cool. Man, this is going to be great! We'll all get to play on the same team together."

CHRIS: (Happily) "Yeah."

Just then, James comes back, and sits at the table beside Josh, with his lunch tray.

JOSH: "Hey, Jamie, guess what? Chris is going to be able to tryout tomorrow too?"

James is surprised.

JAMES: (Looks at Chris) "Yeah?"

CHRIS: "Yeah. My dad called them, and they said that they'll let me tryout, even if we can't pay the fee."

JAMES: "Cool."

CHRIS: "Yeah."

James soon looks worried.

JAMES: "I hope I can make the team, though. I'm not very good at baseball. I can catch and stuff. But hitting, I'm terrible at."

JOSH: "Hey man, don't worry about it. You'll make the team. I'm terrible at batting too. We all are." [Chris nods in agreement] "Like I said, you have to be really, really bad at baseball to not make the team. In fact, I think the only person that didn't make the team last year was Gavin."

CHRIS: (Nodding) "And that was because he didn't show up."

James lets out a relief laugh. He now feels confident in knowing that the chances of him not making the team were very slim.

A LOCAL BATTING CAGE – LATE AFTERNOON

Jane stands by the plate inside the batting cage, bat in hand, and wearing a helmet for protection. Doing her batting stance.

While, James stands a few feet away, watching Jane.

JANE: (Giving James pointers) "Pay attention to the timing of the pitcher, James."

The mechanical pitching machine rings, signaling the pitch coming.

JANE: (Cont.) "And don't think, just hit."

Jane swings, hitting a line drive. Meanwhile, James looks on amazed. And a bit nervously. Seeing that the machine throws the balls at a faster speed than he's used to.

Jane hits another ball and drills it out there.

Jane steps back to take a breather.

JANE: (Taking off her helmet) "Alright. Now, you try."

Jane sees James is nervous.

JANE: "C'mon, it's not that hard. Just take a couple of swings."

James takes a deep breath, and grabs his baseball bat and a helmet. He steps in as Jane steps out. He walks up to the plate, taking his hitting stance. The pitch comes in…

And James flinches back, as the ball flies by him at a high rate of speed.

JANE: (Shouts from the sideline) "Hey! Don't be afraid of the ball."

JAMES: "But it's too fast."

JANE: "No, it's not. It's set at the lowest speed. Trust me, the pitchers will be throwing a lot faster."

This doesn't sit easy for James. Now he really feels like he's in over his head, as another ball just flies right by him again, making him flinch back again in horror.

JANE: "Don't worry about it. Like I said, 'Don't think, just hit.' Okay. You'll be alright. Don't be scared."

James forces himself into a batting stance once again.

Another ball flies out of the machine. This time James looks on more focused and determined. He swings at it, and sadly misses it.

JANE: "Hey! That's okay, bud. Try again."

James swings and misses another pitch. Which aggravates him.

JANE: (Putting her hands up in surrender) "Alright. Alright."

Jane puts her helmet back on, and goes into the batting cage, and goes up behind James. She does a batting stance behind him, putting her hands over his on the bat. They're going to hit together.

JANE: "Alright. We'll do this together, alright?" [James nods] "Now, pay attention to the ringing, it'll let you know when the pitch is coming. Time the distance."

The machine rings out.

JANE: "Wait. Wait. Wait." [The pitch comes] "Swing!"

They swing, hitting the ball together. Not very hard, but right now that's not what's important to Jane. She's more focused on getting James used to hitting.

They do their usual stance again, waiting for the next pitch.

JANE: "Remember, pay attention to the pitcher, and follow the ball."

The machine rings again.

JANE: "Wait for it. Wait." [The pitch comes] "Swing."

They hit again. And burst into laughter after hitting it. James feels silly and awkward of them doing this together.

JANE: (Laughing) "That one was close. We almost missed it." [James laughs harder] "You having fun?"

JAMES: (Nodding) "Yeah."

JANE: "Good."

They take their stance together, and continue on this way for the next few pitches, until Jane feels James has a handle on it.

JANE: "Alright. Now, you try on your own." [He looks at her nervously, as she steps away] "Go on, you can do it."

Jane stands off to the side to let James hit.

James does his usual stance, and swings a miss at the next pitch.

He shakes his head at himself for missing.

JANE: "It's okay, bud. Don't get upset. Just try again."

He looks more focused and determined again.

The ball flies out of the machine. He swings and finally hits one.

JANE: (Proudly) "See? Great job, buddy."

James looks over at Jane, surprised he hit it.

JANE: "I told you, you could do it. Great job. Try another one."

James happily goes back to hitting.

He hits another one pretty good.

JANE: "Yeah! That's how you do it. Good job!"

James smiles happily, as he continues practicing his swing.

Jane can't help but feel proud of him. She felt the sense of pride every parent feels, when they see their children succeed in something that they themselves have taught them.

She couldn't have been happier.

BASEBALL DIAMOND – DAY (LITTLE LEAGUE TRYOUTS)

Jane's car pulls up, into the parking lot. She parks the car closest to the baseball field.

Jane, Maura and James exit the car. Jane makes her way to the trunk of the car, grabbing James' baseball bag, handing it off to James to carry. She then grabs a small blanket and a picnic basket that Maura had prepared. She hands Maura the picnic basket and closes the trunk.

The trio make their way to the baseball diamond. James is walking a bit off cue. He's wearing a baseball tee, along with a new pair of baseball pants and cleats.

But he seems more preoccupied by something else he's not used to wearing… an athletic protective cup.

Jane looks back at James and notices he's grabbing his crotch a lot, trying to adjust himself through his pants. He's not used to wearing an athletic cup. And it's driving him crazy.

JANE: (To James) "What're doing?"

James looks up at Jane, giving her an uncomfortable look, as he continues trying to adjust his cup through his pants.

JAMES: "Do I have to wear this? I don't like it. It's uncomfortable."

Jane stops walking. Waiting for him to catch up. She continues looking at him as he walks forward, walking awkwardly; like there's something wrong.

JANE: "James, it's not that bad. I know you're not used to wearing a cup. But you have to. What if something were to happen out there? What if you got hit in the groin by a fast ball?"

Jane puts her arm around his shoulder. As they walk together to the field.

JAMES: "I feel weird."

JANE: (Cont.) "Trust me, you do not want to deal with the consequences, of what could happen if you get hit there without a cup on."

MAURA: "Did you know that the first testicular guard was used in 1874. It was initially invented by C.F. Bennett, to provide comfort and support for bicyclists riding on the cobblestone streets of Boston."

Both Jane and James roll their eyes.

JANE: (Teasingly) "Really? I thought that story was a joke."

Maura tilts her head a Jane.

MAURA: "What do you mean?"

Jane gives Maura a strange look as they continue walking.

JANE: "It's just a story people tell. Nobody knows if it's true or not." [Maura thinks about it, looking conflicted] "Never mind."

As they make it to the small bleachers, they're greeted by Korsak, whose wearing last year's team jersey and cap. Which Jane makes a crack at:

JANE: (RE: to Korsak's baseball uniform) "Aww. You going to be trying out for the team too?"

They all have a laugh.

KORSAK: "Funny. No, this was my Assistant Coach jersey from last year."

JANE: "Oh." [To James] "Jame, why don't you go get your glove, and go out there and practice with the others."

James looks out at the large group of kids out there. All ranging in different ages.

KORSAK: "Yeah. You could go warm up with Josh."

James nods, and opens up his bag, and grabs his Boston Red Sox cap, and his old mitt that used to be Jane's, and heads out onto the field.

They all watch him run off.

JANE: "So, you're going to be coaching this year too?"

KORSAK: "Me? Nah. We usually rotate the coaching staff among the parents, season-by-season. I'd love to stay coaching, but with my promotion to Homicide, I don't think I'd be able to manage the time."

JANE: "That sucks. I'm sure James is going to be disappointed in knowing that."

KORSAK: "Yeah, Josh too. But, what can you do."

They both nod in unisons.

OUT ON THE BASEBALL FIELD, there are boys and some girls, in different age groups, spread out all over the field. Most of them are wearing their uniforms from last season. A few of the kids are playing catch, like James and Josh. But some others are just standing around, talking in small groups. And some are completely by themselves, standing around uncomfortably, not knowing what to do.

James and Josh, along with Chris, have formed a triangle amongst themselves. They are throwing a baseball around each other. Josh throws it to Chris; Chris than throws it to James; and James throws it back to Josh, and the cycle continues.

All the while they are playing catch, James keeps trying to adjust his cup through his pants. Which catches Jane's attention from the bleachers.

JANE: (From the fence) "JAMES!"

James looks over at her.

Jane shakes her head at him, along with wording a 'NO' at him. Singling for him to stop messing with his cup.

He sighs frustratingly, as he makes one last final adjustment.

KORSAK: (To Jane) "What's wrong with James? Does he have jock itch or something?"

JANE: (Rolling her eyes) "No. He just hates wearing his cup. He's never wore one before."

KORSAK: "Ah. I see. Are you sure it's the right fit for him? Maybe that's what's wrong."

JANE: "Yes. I'm sure. Frankie and I took him to go buy one. And some compression shorts to go along with it. But, he still hates wearing it."

KORSAK: "Yeah, well, it's an adjustment. Having all your junk crammed into one small compartment, takes some getting used to. Josh was the same way too, when he first started playing baseball. But, after a while he got used to it."

JANE: (Nods) "Yeah." [Pats Korsak on the shoulder] "Well I'll see ya up there."

Korsak nods.

Jane makes her way some three rolls up the bleachers towards where Maura is sitting.

Back on the field, James, Josh, and Chris continue on playing catch among each other.

JAMES: (While throwing the ball back at Josh) "There's a lot of kids here."

James says, as he and Josh look around at the other kids warming up.

JOSH: "Yeah. I don't know what's up with that. There wasn't this many trying out last year."

James gets nervous again, thinking his chances of making the team are now slimmer.

That's when one of the coaches calls everybody in.

COACH: "ALRIGHT EVERYONE! C'MON IN! C'MON! Let's get things started."

The coach gathers all the would-be players to the center of the field for roll call, and a run down on how the tryouts are going to go.

A now full-scale formal tryout is in process.

All the kids have now been separated into groups by age divisions. The groups are scattered around the fields, having their own tryouts hosted by multiple division coaches.

First up: Time trials

Runners are set off in a set of two. Both James and Josh sprint their asses off in a 50-yard time trial. Josh is about two feet in front of James as they race towards the finish line. But James soon starts to run out of speed half way, forcing himself to continue running.

He staggers across the finish line. Feeling like he's badly out of shape.

COACH TAYLOR: (Checking stopwatch for James) "6.6 Isles. Not bad."

As James tries to catch his breath, he hears Josh's time of a 5.9, and a "great job" compliment he receives from the coaches.

JOSH: (Walks up to James) "Hey, great job."

JAMES: (Scoffs) "Yeah. Right. You're the one with the 5 pointer."

JOSH: "Hey, don't worry about it. It really doesn't mean anything much in baseball anyways."

Josh says, trying to cheer up his buddy.

JAMES: "Yeah, I guess."

JOSH: "C'mon. Let's go catch some grounders."

James smiles as he follows Josh to another part of the field.

James is at third base, trying to field grounders. But he's struggling a bit. He's managing to catch some of them, and throw them off to the other players. But with some of them that come flying at him, he kind of dodges, almost as if he's afraid of getting hit by one.

And the coaches take notice, as they jot down notes, assessing his performance.

AT HOME PLATE, Josh is crouched behind the plate, catching pitches and throwing them half-speed down to second.

That's when Assistant Coach Brown comes over.

COACH BROWN: "Trying out for catching this season Josh?"

Josh gets up, stretching out his throwing arm.

JOSH: "Nah. I think I'll stick to second baseman."

Josh takes his equipment off for the next player to tryout. Seeing as this is not the positon for him.

MEANWHILE, on another part of the field, James tries pitching. Which he's also pretty bad at. And a bit out of control. Every pitch he throws goes everywhere, but the catcher's mitt.

James just embarrassingly walks off the pitching mount. See that this is not for him either.

Jane and Maura meanwhile, have a few snacks from the picnic basket, as the watch their son and the other's tryout.

MAURA: (Confidently) "James is handling himself pretty professionally."

Meanwhile, Jane looks on at him worriedly, feeling doubtable that he may make the team.

JANE: "Hopefully he finds a position he's good at."

MAURA: "What are you talking about? He was doing great out on the field."

JANE: "Yeah, but still. These Coaches can still be very anal about everything. Everything has to be perfect."

Maura puts a soothing hand on Jane's arm.

MAURA: "Don't worry, Jane. I'm sure, our son will do just fine."

Jane looks back at Maura sweetly, as she rubs Maura's hand with hers.

JANE: "Yeah."

And lastly, it's BATTING time.

A small line of kids has formed behind the backstop.

James, bat in hand, helmet on, walks towards home plate, nervously.

Both Maura and Jane cheer for him as he heads to the plate. Throwing out some words of encouragement towards him. James glances back at them, giving his best fake smile at them, trying to show that he's having a good time. Even though inside, he's a nervous wreck.

JANE: (To herself) "C'mon, you can do this Jamie. C'mon!"

She says, along with making a silent prayer.

James takes his stance in front of the plate. Taking in a deep, shaky, shallow breath, trying to calm himself down. But all that does is make him more nervous and scared.

The pitcher starts his windup, and James looks on intensely, gripping the bat as hard as he can.

The ball comes in, flying straight over the base at a high rate of speed, too fast for James. And just like in the batting cage the day before, he flinches back as the ball flies by.

Jane exhales a disappointing breath, as she lowers her head. Knowing that that's going to cost him.

The kids that are waiting their turn to bat, start stifling a laugh, except for Chris, who's more concerned with James, not making the team over this. So he tries to encourage his new friend.

CHRIS: (Encouraging) "Hey Jamie!" [James looks over at him] "Just go for it. Don't worry, you're not going to get hit. Just swing man."

James takes his words to heart, that he won't get hit. So, he nods back an 'okay' and takes his stance once again at the plate. Upright. Relaxed. Ready.

Another pitch comes in, the same as the last one. He chases it and misses it, swinging late.

JANE: (Clapping out to James) "THAT'S OKAY JAMIE! TRY AGAIN, YOU CAN DO IT, MAN! C'MON!"

James nods along, trying to get back into the grove.

He sets up again for the pitch. Same pitch, with the same results. And it's strike three.

James looks crushed.

But Coach Brown, is still curious to see how James hits, and he tells James to try again. And he does just that.

James steps right back in, makes his stance once again. With everyone curious to see how he does.

The Coach makes a signal for the pitcher to throw a fast ball. The pitcher nods. He winds up his pitch, and delivers…

James swings another miss. Strike one.

He steps away from the plate. Angry. Silently cursing himself. Something that the coaches take notes on.

JANE: (Warns out) "JAMES!"

James knows what the warning is about. And he yells back an "I KNOW!" back at her, without looking her direction.

He sighs, trying to get his frustration out, and heads back to the plate to try again.

This is when Maura thinks it's time to be informative.

Maura rises off the bench, licks her thumb, and places it high above her, measuring the wind speed.

MAURA: (Calls out to James) "JAMES! WINDS AT 10 KNOTS! ABOUT NORTH TO SOUTH-WEST!"

That's when Jane nearly chokes on her snacked chips she was eating. She embarrassingly looks around at everyone in the bleachers, who's staring right at them. Or more precisely at Maura.

She knows that some of these parents are probably silently making fun of Maura, as they continue staring at them, and having a small laugh at Maura's unusual behavior.

Jane immediately rises, and tries to defuse the awkward situation. She puts her arm around Maura, gesturing for her to sit down.

JANE: (To everyone around her) "Yeah it's windy out here." [To Maura, through clenched teeth] "Maura. Stop."

Maura looks at Jane, wondering what's wrong.

MAURA: "What?"

JANE: "You're embarrassing us."

MAURA: "Embarrassing 'us?'"

Jane gives a nod, along with a pleading look.

That's when Maura takes a good look around, and sees that everyone has her uninvited attention. And even James, who is looking down, shaking his head. Silently wishing he had different parents right now.

And Maura then lets out an awkward 'sorry' to everyone, and sits down.

MAURA: (Down) "I'm just trying to help my son. Is that such a terrible thing?"

Jane can see the hurt in Maura's eyes. She was just trying to be helpful to her son, who was needing some helpful guidance.

JANE: (Rubs Maura back in soothing circles) "I know. I know."

That's when everyone diverts their attention back to the tryouts. Including James. Who shakes off this mom's embarrassing moment, and takes his stance at the plate once again.

The pitch comes in… He swings and it's another miss.

James steps back away from the plate. He looks over at Jane. Looking for some helpful tips.

Jane rises off the bench, and motions with her hand to "focus," and she points out towards the pitcher, as if saying, "Watch him."

James nods, and steps back into his stance once again in front of the plate.

Another pitch, and James swings out another miss. Strike three, again.

And that's when James gives up. He pulls his helmet off and heads towards the dugout. He's done trying out. At this point he feels that there's no use.

And this sight crushes Jane. She immediately gets up, and rushes down the bleachers, wanting to get to James. Wanting to be there for him and comfort him.

But as she makes her way around the bleachers, and towards the fence of the dugout, she sees that both Chris and one of the Coaches have already beaten her to it. And they're having a prep talk with James.

And this stops her dead in her tracks. And it's not long before Maura catches up to her.

MAURA: "Jane, what's going on?"

Jane tilts her head towards James' direction with a smile, and a "look over there" motion with her hand.

And Maura sees that James has his own support system in play. Not only with Chris and the coaches, but even some of the other kids came over to make sure he's okay. And give him words of encouragement.

They even see James chuckle a laugh with some of the boys, as he wipes his tears away. He soon rises to his feet, and heads back out behind the backstop, towards the end of the line, so he could give batting another try.

Jane and Maura head back up the bleachers towards their seat to continue watching them tryout. Even giving Korsak a reassuring word that James is okay.

As the tryouts winded down, James did manage to hit some grounders, after taking some helpful tips from the other kids and coaches.

After 3 hours of tryouts and deliberation, the coaches have formed their lists of teams for the season.

All the kids in James' age group are all gathered in the infield. There's a lot of tension, and nerves among them.

And that's when one of the coaches reads off a roster full of names of players that made team.

All the ones picked, smile and cheer. Meanwhile the others, look on nervously, wondering if they made the team or not.

As name after name is called out, James feels that he might not make it. He sees that both Chris and Josh make it.

Until…

COACH: (Lowers the roster) "Okay. Now, if you didn't hear your name called… I'm sorry. You're on the cut list. Now, that doesn't mean that you're bad players…"

James goes pale. He's stunned. He's beyond crushed. He looks like a kid who got nothing on Christmas morning.

And Jane senses it, from the bottom of the bleachers, when she sees Josh and Chris try to cheer up James once again, and the coach that spoke to him earlier, puts a sorry hand on James shoulder, wording a "next year" to him.

JANE: "Shit."

KORSAK: "He didn't make it, did he?"

MAURA: (Shocked) "James didn't make the team?"

Jane kicks the pebbles on the ground, angrily.

JANE: "No, he didn't."

Jane begins making her way around the bleachers towards the field, with Maura in tow. Hoping they don't find James in a tearful mess when they get there.

The ride home was a bit nerve racking for the three of them. Both Jane and Maura tried to cheer up James, by offering to take him out to his favorite pizzeria for dinner. James didn't respond.

But that didn't stop the offerings.

JANE: (Looking at James through the rear view mirror) "How about Queenies. We could get your favorite, Fish and Chips?"

Again, James doesn't respond. He just continues staring off out his side window. Trying to drown out everyone and everything around him.

JANE: (Trying again) "How about we rent a movie tonight? What do you think James? Any movie you wanna watch?" [No response] "I'll go get it, no matter what it is. I'll watch it with you."

Still Jane gets no response from James.

Jane then gives Maura a defeated look. To which, Maura returns a look that says, "Just let him be." Which Jane does. She knows that James is feeling badly about losing his chances of making the team; and possibly humiliated.

MAURA'S HOUSE – JAMES' BEDROOM – NIGHT

James is in his room, angrily tossing all his baseball stuff (Mitts, cleats, baseball equipment, etc.) into a big, black garbage bag. When there's a knock at his door.

James doesn't answer, but continues packing his trash bag.

Jane enters anyways.

JANE: (Cautiously stands at the doorway) "Hey. There's some pizza downstairs, if you want some."

JAMES: "I'm not hungry."

He says, grabbing his catcher's mitt and tossing it into the trash bag.

Jane sees this, and is dumbfounded.

JANE: "What're you doing?"

James pauses, and doesn't look at Jane.

JAMES: "Nothing."

Jane enters the room, and suspiciously goes over towards his trash bag on his bed, and looks through it.

JANE: "Nothing, huh? Then why are you throwing all of your baseball stuff away?"

James doesn't answer.

Jane sits down on the edge of the bed, next to the trash bag. Going through it, pulling items out of it, like her baseball glove that she gave to him, the first time she met him as his father.

She stares at the glove in her hands.

JANE: (Smirks) "Hm." [Looks at him] "Remember when I gave this to you? It was the first time we met as father and son."

James crosses to the bed, sitting down next to Jane. Looking down at the floor in shame.

JANE: "James, what happened today… doesn't really mean anything. A lot of people don't make the team after their first tryout."

JAMES: (Looks at Jane) "But I suck."

JANE: "No, you don't suck. Alright?

JAMES: (Snaps back) "Yes, I do. I was the worst player out there!"

JANE: "No you weren't." [James gives her look of skepticism] "Okay, yes, you didn't perform like an 'experienced' ballplayer – and that's okay! And you know why that's okay?"

James shakes his head.

JANE: "Because you're not an experienced ballplayer. You're just starting out. Hell, nobody's good at sports that they're just starting out at. Hell, I wasn't."

Jane chuckles out.

JANE: "When I first started playing hockey, I was TERRIBLE. I kept falling down everywhere. I couldn't maintain speed. Much less, try and control the puck to get a score."

James laughs along with Jane. Finally seeing the overall picture.

JANE: "I even tried out a few times. It probably wasn't until after my third tryout, that I actually made the team."

James takes this into consideration.

JANE: (Cont.) "After I worked hard on practicing skating, and learning how to stop. Then I started working on how to control the puck. It took a lot of time, and dedication. But, I eventually got good at it."

JANE: "So, you may not be good now. But after a while of working on it, you'll get better. Okay?"

JAMES: "But Josh said that I had to be really terrible, in order to not make the team."

JANE: "Josh said that?" [James nods] "Well, how would Josh know what the coaches are looking for? Right?"

James thinks about it.

JANE: (Cont.) "Josh was probably saying that to you, so that way you wouldn't worry about it."

JANE: "You don't have to throw these things away, just because you did badly today. I mean, you love baseball, right?"

James nods.

JANE: "So, continue playing. You'll get there." [After a moment] "Look, I know, we haven't been practicing very well, like I had hoped. And in a way, I kind of feel like it's my fault. So, I'm going to take the pinch for this one. But, I'm going to try and help you as much as I can. Alright?"

JAMES: "So why did you let me tryout, if I wasn't ready?"

JANE: "I don't know. Maybe because, I don't want you to miss out on any opportunities. And you were sooo looking forward to this. I didn't want to tell you, you can't tryout because you're not ready. And, I wasn't really sure how you'd perform out there, against other kids. And to be honest with you, I'm proud of your efforts today. Because it's pretty brave to step up, and tryout for a sport you've only been playing for the past few months. You should be proud of yourself."

James smiles proudly at himself.

JAMES: "So, do you think I'll get better?"

JANE: "Well, yeah. I mean…"

Jane looks around the room, and on James' bookcase, she sees a big blue ribbon, hanging down from one of the shelves.

She then gets up off the bed, and goes towards it.

JANE: (Pointing to the ribbon) "What'd you get this from?"

JAMES: "Archery."

JANE: (Gives James a confused look) "Archery? You shot arrows?"

JAMES: (Nods) "In summer camp. I got first place."

Jane looks on impressed.

JANE: "Really? Huh. I bet that must have took a lot of practice to get that good."

James just shrugs off.

JAMES: "Yeah, I guess."

JANE: "C'mon, James. Be honest. No time for modesty."

James laughs. Knowing where Jane is getting at.

JAMES: "Okay. I practiced a lot."

JANE: "YES! You see!"

He laughs again.

JANE: "Now I'm sure, if you applied that same amount of dedication and time to baseball, you'll be just as good as you are at archery."

JAMES: "But who's going to help me practice?"

JANE: "I'll help you."

James looks wary.

JANE: "Alright, yes. I know I wasn't as attentive before. I'm going to try to be for now on. Okay?"

James sighs, unsure if she'll keep her word. But he's willing to give her a chance. So he nods.

JANE: "Alright. So, what do you say, we head down and have some pizza?"

James happily nods, as he gets off the bed.

JANE: "Alight. Let's go."

They exit his room together.

JAMES' SCHOOL – CAFETERIA – LUNCH TIME (MONDAY)

James enters the seating area with his food tray, looking on nervously at his usual table, where Josh and Chris are seated at.

He pauses for a moment, still feeling too embarrassed about how he performed on Saturday at tryouts. He just couldn't face their jokes and teasing for his poor performance. So, he looks around the cafeteria for somewhere else to sit.

As he walks, he spots Amy, who's sitting at a table, pretty much by herself. He can't help but smile, and walk towards her.

He arrives at the table.

JAMES: (Happily) "Hi."

Amy looks up, their eyes meet. And she smiles back at him.

AMY: "Hey."

JAMES: "Do you mind if I sit with you."

AMY: (Without hesitation) "Sure."

Amy moves her things over to the side, as James sits across from her at the table.

James rubs his chin nervously, as he stares at her food.

JAMES: "You brought your own food."

He says, gesturing to her homemade sandwich and such.

AMY: "Yeah. I don't like the cafeteria food here. I got sick a few times before. So, I just stick to bring my own lunch."

James just looks down at his chicken nuggets and tatter tots, and now finds it unappetizing.

AMY: (Off James' look) "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make it sound like all their food is deadly."

They each chuckle.

JAMES: "It's okay."

James grabs the ketchup packet, and opens it; smearing it all over his chicken nuggets. He then grabs one, and eats it.

JAMES: (Jokes) "If you don't see me tomorrow, you know what happened."

She laughs. Just then, a couple of other classmates come over and join them at the table.

MALE CLASSMATE #1: "Hey, Amy." ANOTHER CLASSMATE: "Hey, Hey."

The other classmates sit at the table. But they do notice James sitting there, at their table.

MALE CLASSMATE #1: "Who's this?"

AMY: (Happily) "This is Jamie." [Introduces him to MALE CLASSMATE #1] "Jamie, this Matt Adamson." [Matt waves at him, she than introduces ANOTHER CLASSMATE] "And that's—"

ANOTHER CLASSMATE: (Introduces himself) "Paul. How'ya doing?"

AMY: (To her friends) "Jamie is a new student from Deerfield. He just started this semester."

MALE CLASSMATE #2: (To James) "You're from Deerfield?"

James looks around at the other classmates, nervously. He feels intimidated by them, since they appear to be older and bigger then him.

JAMES: (Scared) "No. I just went to school there."

AMY: "Yeah. He went to a boarding school there."

The classmates nod off.

MATT: "Cool. I went to a military school out in New York, before my parents moved here."

James just nods slowly. Unsure if he should stay at the table or leave.

FEMALE CLASSMATE: (Jumps into the conversation) "So, you just moved here?"

James shakes his head no.

The classmates notice his scared demeanor.

MATT: "Hey, man. You don't have to be scared. We're not going to bite you or anything."

The others chuckle. They're obviously trying to lighten the tension, and make him feel welcomed.

PAUL: "So you're in 6th grade with Amy?"

James nods, along with a "yeah" back.

PAUL: "Cool."

Amy looks on longingly at James, who's now starting to open up to her friends. She sees him and her friends interact with each other, as they all talk and laugh.

She feels relieved and thrilled to see her friends take to James so well. And welcome him into their group without hesitation. Even if it's just for one afternoon.

HALLWAYS – (AFTER LUNCH)

James and Amy walk through the crowded hallway together. As they make their way to their 5th period Science class.

JAMES: "So, thanks for introducing me to your friends. That was cool."

AMY: (Smiles widely) "Hey, no problem. I'm happy to introduce you around to some people I know. I know it must not be easy for you. Being the new kid and all."

JAMES: (Shyly) "Yeah. It's been intimidating meeting new people. Especially when everyone thinks I'm some 'spoiled rich kid.' When I'm not. I mean, we have money. But, it's not like, I have a million dollars or something."

They each chuckle out a laugh.

AMY: "Well… when you come from Beacon Hill, everyone thinks you do. And you're an Isles."

James looks at her questioningly. Wondering what she means by "You're an Isles."

AMY: (Embarrassingly admits) "I uh… I googled your name."

James nods, cautiously.

AMY: (Cont.) "I was curious. Some people here talk. And they said that your family has more money, then all of our families combined."

JAMES: "You know, we really don't, right?"

AMY: "Well, your grandmother does have a lot of money."

JAMES: (Sadly) "Yeah, well, we're not really close with her."

AMY: "Oh. I'm sorry."

James just shrugs. Not really caring either way.

AMY: "But, I'm sure your name still holds power."

James just looks on.

AMY: "Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that you're a spoiled rich kid. But I'm sure you can get into any school you wanted to. I mean, if you can go to school anywhere, why come here."

Amy chuckles out. She couldn't understand why someone with James' statue would come to an inner city public school, instead of an upper class Prep School.

JAMES: "Well, actually, my best friend Josh comes here. And I hated being away at Deerfield. So, my parents let me come here. Since I already knew Josh and everything."

Amy nods along.

AMY: "That's cool of them."

They continue walking, until they make it to their classroom.

AMY: "So, did you do the homework?"

JAMES: "Of course."

AMY: (Surprised) "And you actually understood it?"

JAMES: "Yeah. You didn't?"

They make their way to their table in the back of the room.

AMY: (Embarrassingly) "No."

JAMES: "Oh. Well, which part didn't you understand?"

AMY: (Laughs hopelessly) "All of it."

James puts on a sad smile, as they each sit down at the table.

Amy looks shyly at James.

AMY: "Can I see your homework?"

James doesn't think twice about it.

JAMES: "Yeah. Sure."

James digs into his things, looking for his homework packet. He pulls it out, and hands it to Amy.

Amy stares at it. She sees that he has completed all of the questions on every single page.

AMY: (Doubt founded) "How did you do this?"

James just shrugs off.

JAMES: "I just looked at my notes, and read the chapter."

AMY: "Wow. You're really smart."

JAMES: "Not really. I mean, I'm not as smart as my mom. She's the one who got me interested in science and stuff."

AMY: (Reads a question from the homework) "A mercury barometer would have to be at least (Answer: 76 cm) tall."

James just nods along as Amy reads the answer.

AMY: (Looks at James) "How did you find that answer?"

JAMES: "It's in the book. Look…" [James opens the textbook, and searches for it.] "See. There it is."

James points it out in the book to Amy.

AMY: "Oh. I must have missed that part."

Amy marks it down on her semi-complete homework packet. To which James notices.

JAMES: "You know, if you want… I could help you with this stuff."

AMY: "You mean, tutor me?"

James shrugs.

JAMES: "If you want, yeah. We could do our homework together."

AMY: (Shyly smiles) "That'd be cool. You wouldn't mind?"

James smiles and shakes his head no.

AMY: "Alright. Cool."

James smiles widely, and gives Amy a "Cool" response back.

SCHOOL QUAD – (AFTER 5TH PERIOD)

James makes his way through the crowded quad, trying to make it to his 6th period History class. When out of nowhere, Josh comes up from behind him.

JOSH: "HEY! JAMIE! JAMIE WAIT!"

James stops, and turns around. He sees Josh rushing through the thick crowd, making his way towards him, with a sense of urgency in his voice.

JOSH: "Hey man. Where've you been? I haven't seen you all day."

JAMES: (Quietly, and refrained) "Hey."

They start making their way towards their classroom.

JOSH: "So, what happened to you, man? I didn't see you during lunch. I thought that you didn't show up to school today."

Here it is. The conversation he was dreading.

JAMES: "I had something to do during lunch. Sorry man."

JOSH: "Yeah. It's no big deal. For a minute there, I thought that you were mad at me or something."

JAMES: "Nah. It's cool."

Josh lets it go.

JOSH: "Alright."

As they continue walking, Josh can't help but bring up what happened during the weekend.

JOSH: "So, uh… Look, I'm sorry you didn't make the team this year. I thought for sure you would've had a chance."

JAMES: (Tries to brush it off) "It's alright. I really didn't want to make the team anyways."

James says, trying to make it seem like he doesn't care if he makes the team or not, but in truth, he does.

JOSH: "So why did you tryout if you don't wanna play?"

James knows he's caught in a lie. But he's still too proud to admit it that he wants to play, but that he's terrible at the sport.

And Josh can sense it too.

JOSH: "Look you're not that bad at baseball. You just need some practice."

James pauses.

JAMES: (Snaps back) "Yeah, I know! I need to practice. I got it."

James shakes his head in frustration. Not wanting to talk about it anymore.

Josh stands back. Shocked by James' dramatic outburst.

JOSH: "Hey, what's up with you? Are you mad at me for something?"

James looks around, unsure who he's really mad at.

JAMES: "I don't know."

James starts walking off.

Josh stands frozen. He doesn't know what's going on with his friend.

Josh catches up with James again.

JOSH: "Look, if I said anything to piss you off—"

JAMES: "Oh, you mean like when you said, 'I'd have to be really, really terrible at baseball in order to not make the team.'"

Now Josh understands why James' is ticked off.

Josh feels badly for saying that to him. But, he doesn't know what to say or do to take it back.

And James just scoffs angrily, and walks away. Leaving Josh behind.

As Josh makes his way into the classroom, he sees an angry James, sitting at his usual seat.

Josh cautiously makes his way to James. He sits down next to James. Feeling like he has to say something to his friend.

JOSH: "Look man… I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said—"

JAMES: (Coldly) "Just forget it. Leave me alone."

James then angrily slams his textbook on the table, opening it. Rummaging through the pages, looking for when they last left off.

Josh just quietly faces forward, getting his textbook and notebook out of his bag.

IN FRONT OF SCHOOL – DAY (AFTER SCHOOL)

Josh emerges from the front school gates. He makes his way through the crowded area, when he spots James, sitting on the curb out front, waiting for his ride. Looking distant.

Josh can't help but feel for his friend, whose feeling down. Josh makes his way towards James.

JOSH: "Hey."

James just looks up. Unresponsive.

Josh sits down next to James on the curb.

JOSH: (After a short pause) "I didn't mean what I said the other day. You really aren't that bad by the way. You just suck at batting."

Josh can't help but playfully chuckles.

JAMES: "So, you're going to make fun of me now? Cause I suck?"

James scoffs. This is what he's been dreading. Being picked on for his bad performance on the field.

Josh's smile fades. As he sees his friend hurt.

JOSH: "No. I was just trying to make you laugh."

James just continues looking forward.

A few awkward silent moments pass by.

JOSH: "Are you still pissed?"

James sighs, and shakes his head no.

Josh nods satisfied.

JOSH: "You know, you could tryout next season. I can help you. Give you some pointers and stuff."

JAMES: "I don't know. I just started playing so…"

JOSH: (Surprised) "You've never played baseball before?"

James looks at him, shakes his head, embarrassingly.

JOSH: "Wow. I guess that explains it."

JAMES: (Confesses) "I've played softball… underhand, you know. But never real baseball, like that."

JOSH: "Well, you could always come and practice with me and dad. We usually practice in the mornings at the park on Saturdays. Or we sometimes practice during the week. But, now that he works in a new department, he hasn't had much time."

James nods along.

JAMES: "Yeah. Jane was supposed to help me practice too. Show me some stuff. But then she hurt her arm, and, that was the end of that. My uncle Frankie was supposed to teach me some things too. But he never had the time."

James says depressingly. Wishing that he was athletically gifted like his friends and other boys in his school. They seemed to be good at every sport. He was even bad at playing sports in P.E., since he really didn't know how to properly play every sport.

Just then, Jane's car drives by. She parks off to the side of the street, across the street.

JAMES: "Well, that's me. See ya later."

James gets off the curb, and rushes across the street, looking both ways, making sure it's safe to cross.

James enters Jane's car and they drive off.

JAMES: "Hey."

JANE: "Hey. Sorry I'm late. I had a lot of things to take care of at work."

JAMES: "That's okay."

JANE: "So, how was school? Good?"

JAMES: "Yeah. Everything went great."

JANE: "Good."

MAURA'S HOUSE – BACKYARD – DAY (SATURDAY)

James is sitting on a tall stool, in the shade by the backside of the house. A cape draped around his neck, getting a haircut by Maura.

She attaches a new guide comb onto the WAHL electric razor clippers. And turns it on. She starts working on clipping some of the hair off the back of his head.

She pauses, and turns the clippers off. And works on removing the guide comb to clean underneath. She then starts running a comb through his hair to make sure she didn't miss anything.

MAURA: (While combing his hair) "Your hair's starting to come in darker now."

Maura says, noticing that his hair is starting to come in darker from the scalp; Now that his hair is now shorter.

JAMES: "I know."

MAURA: "Maybe by the time you enter high school, your hair will be as dark as mine."

JAMES: "Do you think my hair will be as dark as Jane's?"

MAURA: (Chuckles) "Doubtful. If anything, your hair may turn light brown or you'll have some form of darker blond hair. But, I don't think it'll be as dark as Jane's though."

Maura then thinks about it for moment.

MAURA: "Why? Do you want darker hair like Jane's?"

JAMES: (Shrugs) "I don't know. I was just wondering."

MAURA: "Oh. I need to trim the hair in back of your ears."

Maura then grabs the same guide comb and attaches it onto the clippers.

JAMES: "Why is my hair getting darker?"

MAURA: "Well, it's genetics, James. You remember that thing called Genetics, right? That topic you were so eager to learn about."

JAMES: (Smiles) "Yeah."

MAURA: (Continues explaining) "Well, each person has several genes that determine his or her hair color. And different genes are active at different stages in that person's life; resulting in changes in hair color. Our genes determine the level of pigmentation present in our hair – not to mention, our eyes and skin color as well."

JAMES: "So, my brown eyes are from genes that Jane gave me?"

MAURA: "And mine too. Don't forget that I contribute to your genetic makeup as well."

James silently nods, finding this whole topic fascinating.

JAMES: "Cool."

MAURA: "It is, isn't it?"

Just then, James starts scratching the back of his neck.

MAURA: "Hang on, James. I'm almost done."

JAMES: "It itches."

MAURA: "I know. Just let me finish trimming around your ears, and then you can go in and take a shower, okay?"

Maura starts up the clippers again, and pulls down the top of his ear, and starts gliding the clippers along his scalp, going upwards and around his ear, trimming off the excess hair.

She does the same to his other ear, and turns the clippers off.

MAURA: "There. All done."

She removes his cape full of hair, and shakes the cape off, trying to remove the hair off of it.

MAURA: "Honey, before you go inside, can you sweep up your hair into the trash for me?"

James removes himself from the top of the stool.

JAMES: "Yeah."

MAURA: "Thank you sweetie."

Maura unplugs the clippers, and starts working on cleaning up the haircutting tools and accessories she used.

Meanwhile, James has now gotten a broom, and is now sweeping his hair off the concrete floor.

JAMES: (While he sweeps) "Are we still going to Grand-mère for Mother's Day?"

MAURA: (Caught off guard) "Yes. I told you about this. Remember?"

Maura then looks at her son, and sees that he's not too enthused about the whole thing.

MAURA: "Look, sweetie. I know you want to spend it here with Jane. And I do too. But, Grand-mère wants to spend the day with us. And she has the whole weekend all planned out for us. And Jane… well, she has to spend it with her mother."

She sees that this is still not pleasing him.

MAURA: (Cont.) "And like what we talked about before… You, me and Jane, we'll celebrate Mother's Day on another weekend. It's no big deal, honey. Okay?"

Maura says, trying to reassure him that they won't pass on celebrating Mother's Day together.

Maura walks up to her son, and places her loving, caring arms around his shoulders. Trying to comfort him.

MAURA: "Is that okay?"

JAMES: (Still not liking the idea) "Do we have to spend the whole weekend there?"

MAURA: "Yes, James. The whole weekend. We'll be coming back on Sunday night. Alright?" [James doesn't respond] "Grand-mère wants to see you. She misses you."

James wanted so badly to laugh at that. And discount it. He knew that he was practically invisible when it came to meeting his grandmother, Constance. She would barely acknowledge him at their family functions.

In fact, he often wondered if his mother even knew, or bothered to pay attention to these things.

That was until…

MAURA: "James I know, you may not feel it. But, your grand-mère told me herself, that she misses you. And she would like to see you, and spend time with you."

But James wasn't so optimistic. He was more of a, 'I'll believe it, when I see it' type of person.

But when he saw his mother's pleading eyes. He didn't want to disappoint her.

JAMES: (Sadly) "Okay."

MAURA: "Okay." [Lovingly ruffles his hair] "Now, go take your shower. I'll finish up out here, alright?"

James nods, as he hands the broom over to his mother. And happily takes off.

CARD: "Saturday, May 13, 2006" (Day before Mother's Day)

MAURA'S HOUSE – DINING ROOM – MORNING

James is setting up the table for a surprise early Mother's Day breakfast. He places his "Happy Mother's Day" card on the table, next to the plate setting.

He then crosses to the kitchen, where Maura's mixing the waffle batter in a bowl.

MAURA: (Smiling sweetly) "Hey, are you ready to start making the waffles?"

James happily nods a "yeah."

Maura sticks her finger into the batter and tastes it.

MAURA: "Alright. We're about ready to start."

James makes his way around the island to the stove.

MAURA: "Okay, so, first we spray the waffle iron with some non-stick cooking spray."

Maura grabs the cooking spray, and sprays the waffle iron.

MAURA: "There. Now, you pour the batter in. Like so…"

She pours it onto the waffle iron.

MAURA: "See? That's good."

She then closes the waffle iron.

MAURA: "Alright. And then we wait."

JAMES: "How do you know when it's done?"

MAURA: "When that light there turns green. Then you open it up, and check, to make sure it's golden brown."

JAMES: "Oh."

Maura then grabs a spatula, and starts stirring the scrambled eggs on a local pan.

MAURA: (After a moment) "Alright, that should be about good."

Maura places the eggs pan on another burner, as she turns off the one she was cooking on.

MAURA: "Alright, Imma go wake up Jane. Can you watch the waffle?"

James nods.

MAURA: "Just check it when the light turns green. And then shut it off. Okay?"

James nods.

MAURA: "Alright. I'll be back."

Maura wipes her hands on a wash cloth, and exits the kitchen.

IN THE MASTER BEDROOM

As Maura enters the room, she hears her alarm clock going off. And all she sees is a hand reaching out from under a pile of covers, and attempts to blindly silence the alarm.

Maura can't help but place her hand over her mouth, trying to stifle her giggles, as she witnesses Jane's hand flails, landing to the left and right of the clock, missing it every time.

But Maura can't help but burst out laughing.

She then goes and reaches over towards the alarm clock, and turns it off. Causing Jane to pull back the covers. Opening a sleepy eye and looks up at Maura, groggy.

JANE: (Through raffle hair over her face) "Hey."

MAURA: "Hi. Did you have a good night sleep?"

Jane lifts her head, as she pushing her hair back.

JANE: (Running her hands over her face, trying to wake up) "I didn't know you set the alarm. What time is it?"

Maura sits on the edge of the bed.

MAURA: "It's 9:30."

Jane groans, as she turns onto her side, wanting to go back to sleep.

JANE: "Wake me up when it's noon."

Jane says, as she pulls the covers up, covering her body.

MAURA: "No." [She pulls Jane's covers down] "It's time for you to get up."

Jane doesn't want to move, but continues groaning, not wanting to get up.

JANE: (Whining through closed eyes) "Whyyyy?"

MAURA: (Smirking) "James has something he wants to show you."

Jane opens up an eye, and looks at Maura curiously.

A few minutes later, Maura leads a now, happy, awaken Jane down the stairs, who's still in her PJs.

JANE: "C'mon, Maur, what's going on?"

Jane asks impatiently.

MAURA: "You'll have to come down and see."

As they make their way down the stairs, and towards the dining area, Jane stops, dead in her tracks, at the sight she sees in front of her.

James is making sure he has everything at the table, where the breakfast feast is spread.

JANE: (Surprised, and genuinely touched) "What is this?"

That's when James proclaims proudly…

JAMES: "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!"

Jane is moved by this.

JANE: "Aw, you guys." [Looks to Maura] "Were you a part of this?"

Maura nods shyly. Not wanting to take away from James.

James then comes over, and gives Jane a big hug.

JAMES: "Happy Mother's Day."

JANE: (Returns the hug) "Thank you, sweetie."

James then hugs Maura, telling her "Happy Mother's Day" too.

JANE: (Re: The breakfast spread) "Wow, look at this, you shouldn't have."

JAMES: (Grabs Jane's hand) "Come."

James leads Jane to her seat at the table.

JANE: "Wow, you did all this?"

Jane sits down at the table, where half a plate of blueberry waffles sit before Jane.

MAURA: "Well, I helped."

Then James happily holds out a chair for his mother, who impressively accepts it.

MAURA: "Thank you honey."

James then serves Maura a plate of the other half of blueberry waffles as well.

He then starts offering them some scrambled eggs, and places it on their plates with their waffles.

Both Jane and Maura are impressed and touched by their son's warm hospitality.

They each ad lib "thank you" to James.

He then grabs a bowl of fresh strawberries, and offers it to them. Which they happily accept.

JAMES: (Pointing to his card next to Jane) "I made you a card."

JANE: "Ah, yes."

Jane picks it up, and opens it.

JANE: (Reading the card out loud) "Thank you for the honor of being not only my Dad, but my second Mom as well. How lucky am I, to have you be the best of both worlds. Happy Mother's & Father's Day. –James"

Jane's touched by his sweet, kind words.

JANE: "Aw, thank you James."

She gives him a side hug from her seat.

JANE: "I'm very honored and happy to be both your father and a second mother to you. Thank you. This was sweet."

JANE: (To Maura) "Did he give you a card too?"

MAURA: (Nods) "This morning, I found it by the coffee maker."

JANE: "Aw. Was it like this one?"

MAURA: "It was the same type of card. It just didn't include the 'father' aspect of it. But he did thank me for picking you to be his father."

This moved Jane.

James leaves the room. Leaving Jane and Maura to some private time together.

JANE: "That was nice of him to do this."

MAURA: "Yes. It is. Aren't you glad you came down here?"

JANE: (Chuckles) "Yeah."

They begin digging into their food, enjoying it tremendously, when James returns, happily holding something behind his back.

JAMES: "Happy Mother's Day."

James hands Maura a gift bag, and goes over to Jane, handing her hers.

JANE: "Aw James, you shouldn't have."

MAURA: "Thank you, sweetie."

Jane digs through the tissues inside the bag, and pulls out a brand new baseball. She looks at it in her hand, and notices it's autographed.

JANE: (Excited) "Oh, James you shouldn't have."

Jane tries to read the autograph, and it's one she's not familiar with.

JANE: (Reading the autograph) "James Isles?"

She looks over at him, a bit confused.

MAURA: "Tell her what the present means James."

Maura says, already knowing the meaning of the gift.

JAMES: "Well, you gave me your baseball glove that was yours."

MAURA: (Elaborates more) "'Personally' yours."

JAMES: "Yeah. And I wanted to give you something back. Something baseball related that was personally mine. And so, I gave you this. And mom says that you collect autograph baseballs of your favorite players. So…"

MAURA: (To Jane) "I saw the baseball case at your apartment."

Jane nods, understandingly. Knowing what baseball case she's referring to.

JAMES: (Shrugs coyly) "So, maybe I could become your favorite ballplayer one day."

Jane smiles lovingly, as she stares at the ball in her hand.

Finding the whole thing cute as hell.

JANE: (To James) "James, you're already my favorite ballplayer. And I would be proud to display this in my baseball collection."

JAMES: "Yeah?"

Jane nods.

JANE: "Yes. Absolutely. Thank you James. I love this gift. And the thought that I'm the first person to get your autograph, makes it even more special."

James smiles proudly, as Jane rises from her seat, and gives her son a proud hug.

JANE: "Thank you Jamie. I love it."

Meanwhile, Maura starts to dig into her gift bag, and pulls out a beaded necklace.

MAURA: (Astonished) "Oh my. Where did you get this?"

JAMES: "Um… Amy made it for me."

This catches Maura off guard.

MAURA: "Amy? Who's Amy?"

Jane freezes a bit, unsure if she should tell Maura that Amy is James' little crush from school.

JAMES: "She's a friend from school. She makes stuff like this, as a hobby. And I asked her if she could make me one for Mother's Day. And she did."

JANE: "Oh? So just like that, she did."

JAMES: "Well no. I gave her 10 bucks for it." [Both Jane and Maura give him a look] "What? She said she could use the money. She said that she's saving up for something."

JANE: "You didn't force her to make it, did you?"

JAMES: "No. She said she was happy to."

MAURA: "Well, either way. I love it. Thank you sweetie. And be sure to thank Amy as well for making this. She's very talented."

JAMES: (Smiling) "I will. She'd be happy to hear you like it. Since she wasn't sure if you would."

Maura gets up and hugs James. Giving him a kiss on the head.

MAURA: "Thank you sweetie." [Looking at the necklace] "It's lovely."

JANE: (Guiltily to Maura) "Sorry, I don't have a gift to give to you yet. Is it possible you can wait until tomorrow night, when you guys get back from your mother's?"

MAURA: "Yes. Since, I don't have your gift yet, either."

Jane pretends to be shocked.

JANE: (Playfully) "Maura. Last minute gift shopping, that's so unlike you."

MAURA: (Laughs) "Well, you're difficult to shop for."

JANE: (Undeniably) "True. But, anything sports related, you can't go wrong."

MAURA: "I'll keep that in mind, when I do shopping online."

Maura leans down, giving Jane a kiss on the lips.

MAURA: "Happy Mother's Day Jane."

Jane smiles.

JANE: "Happy Mother's Day Maura."

They kiss again.

LATER THAT SAME DAY…

HYANNIS PORT – COTTAGE – AFTERNOON

Maura and James are driving up the long pebbled driveway to a Waterfront Cottage at the end of the driveway.

The Cottage is of decent size, not too big or small. Just a nice, three bedroom house by the beach.

As they approach the cottage, they're taken by surprise by the amount of people there. There's multiple women sitting around in lounge chairs on the front porch deck, some socializing around the cottage, and kids running around in the yard.

Maura quickly does a double check on her GPS device. And it says they are in the right location.

James glances at Maura. Wondering what's going on.

MAURA: (To James) "Hang on. I'll go see what's going on. Okay."

Maura exits the car, straightening out her navy blue, two toned pencil dress. And starts making her way towards the cottage, a bit nervously.

But it isn't long, when Constance sees her, and breaks away from the crowd of women, and makes her way towards Maura.

CONSTANCE: (Happy to see Maura) "Oh darling, you're here! Finally!"

Constance embraces her daughter. Maura's a bit surprised.

MAURA: "I wasn't sure, if this was the place."

CONSTANCE: (Breaks the hug) "Yes. Isn't it lovely? I forgot how beautiful it is out here during Spring season."

Maura looks around, nodding in agreement.

CONSTANCE: (Looks Maura over) "And don't you look stunning."

MAURA: "Thank you. So do you."

CONSTANCE: (Looks around worriedly) "Where's James?"

MAURA: "Oh. He's…"

Maura points off towards her car.

That's where James notices that it is Constance with his mother, and he slowly gets out of the car, as they slowly approach.

CONSTANCE: (Delighted to see him) "James!" [Embraces him, which he happily returns] "Oh, sweetie. I'm so glad to see you. I've missed you."

She breaks the embrace. And takes a good look at him. As he stands there in his white Ralph Lauren polo shirt, tucked into his navy khaki pants, wearing loafers. Looking like a rich preppy kid.

CONSTANCE: "Oh James, look at you. You're growing up so fast. Pretty soon, you're going to be taller than me."

MAURA: "He's grown about half a centimeter since last year."

CONSTANCE: "Really?"

James just looks down at himself, not really noticing the difference in his height.

CONSTANCE: (Runs her hand through his hair) "And your hair. It's getting darker."

James reaches up, brushing his hair back. Feeling self-conscious of her running her hand through it.

JAMES: "Yeah."

CONSTANCE: "Well, keep it up. Pretty soon, you'll have all the girls chasing after you."

James smiles shyly. Feeling flattered by that statement.

MAURA: "Mother."

CONSTANCE: "What? It'll be true. You'll see it." [To James] "Trust me James, with your good looks and statue, you'll have the girls at your boarding school drooling all over you."

That's when James and Maura exchange an awkward look. Obviously Constance still doesn't know that James doesn't go to a boarding school anymore. But neither say anything about it. Not wanting to cause tension.

CONSTANCE: (Extends her arm to them) "Come. I'll show you around, and introduce you to everyone."

Constance links arms with Maura, as James follows along.

MAURA: "Mother… I thought that we'd be spending the weekend together. Just the three of us."

CONSTANCE: "Oh darling. Didn't I mention, that I invited some old friends to spend the day with us?"

Maura just remains quite.

CONSTANCE: "I thought I did. I'm sorry, if I didn't. It was a last minute change. See, Helen asked me if I wanted to meet up with some of the gals and chat. And I couldn't resist not meeting up with them. Since I haven't seen them in so long, since leaving the States. So, I invited them and their children to come and spend the day with us and catch up."

CONSTANCE: (Off Maura's sad look) "Oh darling, I hope it's not an inconvenience. It's just for today. They'll just be staying for dinner, and…" [Bring in Maura closer to her] "…afterwards, it'll just be us. The three of us for the rest of the weekend."

Maura puts on a smile, and nods.

CONSTANCE: "Alright. Let me introduce you around."

Which Constance did, like a Pro. She took Maura and James around the estate, and introduced them to all of her friends and children, with such poise and proudness.

As they make their way through the cottage, they run into another of Constance's friends.

CONSTANCE: "Margaret, you remember my daughter, Maura?"

Constance announces proudly.

MARGARET: (Shakes Maura's hand) "Ah, yes. My, have you grown up to be such a gorgeous woman."

MAURA: "Thank you. It's nice to meet you."

CONSTANCE: "She's a doctor."

MARGARET: (Impressed) "Oh. How nice. A doctor in the family. And stunningly beautiful as well. Any man would be lucky to have her." [To Maura] "What kind of medicine do you practice?"

MAURA: (Nervously) "Pathology." [Off Margret's puzzled look] "I'm the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth."

Margaret forces a smile, and nods at Maura.

MARGARET: "Oh yes, of course. Good for you."

An awkward silence falls between them.

CONSTANCE: (Guides James forward) "And this is my grandson, James."

Margaret is stunned by this news.

MARGARET: "Grandson? You've never mentioned about having a grandson."

Constance just smiles and tilts her head, as if saying "oops."

MARGARET: (To James) "Nice to meet you, James." [Looks him over] "Wow, aren't you handsome?" [To Constance and Maura] "Better keep an eye on this one. He's going to break a lot of hearts."

They all have a chuckle.

The trio continue on meeting and greeting others.

LOUNGE ROOM – LATER

Maura and Constance sit on a couch, enjoying some tea. While other women socialize nearby.

Constance looks over to where James is, having some snacks at a nearby table. She stares at him for moment. Studying him.

CONSTANCE: (Turns to Maura) "James is growing up to be quite a fine young man."

Maura looks over at him. Seeing some of the other women approach him, complementing him. Telling him how cute and adorable he is. Meanwhile, James just looks on, feeling awkward and insecure about the whole thing.

CONSTANCE: (Towards James) "James, honey! [James looks her way] "Why don't you go outside, and play with the others."

James throws a quick glance towards his mother, who nods at him.

James puts his drink down on the table, eating his last piece of cheese and cracker, and reluctantly heads outside.

Constance then turns back to Maura, who's taking small sips of her tea.

CONSTANCE: "You know, you never did tell me who James' father really is."

Constance eyes Maura intensely. Wanting to know.

MAURA: (Eyes her mother back) "Mother… Do we have to have this discussion every time?"

Maura places her tea cup onto the coffee table before them.

CONSTANCE: "I just don't understand why you refuse to tell us who he is."

MAURA: (Stiffening) "I don't understand why his father has to be announced to the world."

CONSTANCE: (Caught off guard) "I beg your pardon?"

Maura doesn't say anything. But just shies away.

CONSTANCE: "Maura. James needs a father. He deserves to know who his father is."

MAURA: (Appalled) "He needs a father? What about me? Where's my father at? Oh yeah, he shunned me. And as for my biological parents, you never disclosed to me who they are."

CONSTANCE: "It was a closed adoption. We had no choice. And as for your father… You broke his heart with this whole pregnancy."

MAURA: "I broke his heart? And he breaking mine when he shunned me, wasn't as bad?"

Maura says hurt and angered.

CONSTANCE: "Maura… your father is a stubborn man. You should know." [After a short pause] "Now… I really don't want to get into all of this here, when we have guest to entertain."

Constance says, as she smiles to the other women around the room.

MAURA: (Disappointingly) "I have to go check on James." [Rises off the couch] "Excuse me."

Maura leaves the room. Needing a breather.

BACK ROOM – (Same time)

Maura looks out the window, overlooking the backyard and the beach. She then spots James, sitting alone on the back porch steps, looking down at the ground, miserable.

Maura lets out a disappointing sigh. Feeling his misery.

Maura opens the back screen door, and steps out of the house, unto the expansive deck.

She makes her way up to James.

MAURA: "Hey."

James just looks up at his mother, as she sits down next to him.

She looks on before her, the epic backyard, overlooking the beach. She then looks off towards the side of the house, which has a small patch of grass, where the other kids play a game of football.

Seeing that James isn't interested in playing with them.

As they sit in silence, Maura looks James over, and studies him. She's noticed a change in him over the course of a year, since Jane entered his life.

He's changed. She didn't know exactly when it started happening, but knew it was happening. He started playing sports, he was making some new friends. Hell, even his overall style started to change. He went from khakis to jeans, dress shirts to t-shirts, dress shoes to tennis shoes.

She took it as, he was trying to fit in at school and with his new friends. Trying to eliminate this 'rich boy' persona that followed him where ever he went.

MAURA: "Don't you want to go out there and play with the other kids?"

JAMES: (Displeasingly) "No."

MAURA: "You don't like football?"

James looks up at his mother again.

JAMES: (Pleading) "I wanna go home."

Maura puts a loving hand on his sad face, cupping his chin.

MAURA: "We'll go home tomorrow, okay?"

James just sighs frustratingly, as he gets up, and heads back inside, angrily slamming the back screen door shut.

Maura sighs as she looks on, feeling his pain.

Maura went back inside, and looked around for James. She found him sitting in the lounge room once again.

He leaned in an armchair, looking out the side window. Blowing his breath on the window, and watching it fog up. He makes one big fog spot, and draws stick figures in the moisture.

Maura had an inner chuckle over this.

He's defiantly not one of them anymore. He's a Rizzoli.

Maura theorized.

James just doesn't fit into this crowd anymore. Before he was more active with other kids in these social gatherings. And a lot more eager to want to engage with other people, and activities.

And now, he doesn't want any of it. He just wants to be left alone, in his own world, away from them.

And this saddens Maura. To see James disconnect like this.

She knew she had to do something.

RIZZOLI HOUSEHOLD – JANE'S BATHROOM - EARLY MORNING (SUNDAY)

CARD: "Mother's Day"

Jane is in the shower. She tries to squirt some shampoo into her hand. But the bottle only squirts out one teaspoon size squirt of shampoo and that's it. Jane violently shakes the shampoo bottle trying to get more out. But it's no use.

She then unscrews the cap, fills the container with water to dislodge the last scraps of shampoo, and then dumps the whole thing on her head. She scrubs and rinses it out. Then takes a bar of soap, and starts washing her body with it. She then turns off the water.

JANE'S BEDROOM –

Jane comes into the bedroom, hair wrapped in a towel on top of her head, and a towel wrapped around her body.

She stops, dead in her tracks at the sight in front of her…

Maura. Maura's there, lying on her still unmade bed, fully clothed, semi awake.

MAURA: (Sleepy) "Hey."

JANE: (Soft smile) "Hi." [Looks around, wondering what's going on] "What are you doing here?"

Jane approaches Maura, and sits on the edge of the bed. She runs a soothing hand on Maura's leg. Maura smiles back at her.

MAURA: "I had a crime scene to get to last night. Or I should say, earlier this morning."

JANE: "Oh. I'm sorry."

MAURA: "I'm not."

Jane gives Maura a confused look.

MAURA: (Cont.) "I needed to get away from my mother."

JANE: (Makes a face) "Oh. That bad, huh?"

MAURA: (Sad chuckle) "James needed to get away too."

JANE: "Where is James anyway?"

MAURA: "Asleep in your brother's room."

JANE: "How'd you get here?"

MAURA: (Tiredly) "Can we talk about this later?"

Maura says with sleepy eyes.

JANE: "Yeah. Yeah. Sure."

Jane gets up off the bed, to let Maura sleep.

As Jane attempts to pull the sheets up, to cover Maura, Maura places a hand on Jane's. Stopping Jane.

She looks at Maura questioningly.

MAURA: "Will you join me?"

JANE: (Looks down at herself, indecisive) "Uh… Let me puts some clothes on, okay?"

She says with a chuckle.

She then turns to head back into the restroom, but pauses a moment.

JANE: (Back to Maura) "I'll get you some PJs."

Maura lets out a tired chuckle. Watching Jane head back into the restroom.

Later that morning…

Jane and Maura are sound asleep in Jane's bed, when a loud knock at the door disrupts their sleep.

Jane springs up from a deep sleep, while Maura is lying on her side, facing Jane, still asleep.

ANGELA: (From the other side of the closed door) "Jane, Maura are you awake!?"

JANE: (Annoyed) "NO, MA!"

Jane sits up on her elbow, while rubbing her sleepy eyes with her other hand, trying to wake up.

ANGELA: "Okay! Well, breakfast is almost ready if you're hungry!"

JANE: "We're not eating, Ma!"

ANGELA: "Okay."

And with that, Jane just lies back down, burying herself back beneath the sheets and covers.

MAURA: (Eyes still closed) "So, we're not going to have breakfast?"

Jane brings down the covers, and shoots Maura a surprised look. She didn't think Maura was awake.

JANE: "Only if you want to."

MAURA: (Groaning) "Mmmm. I'd rather spend the morning with you."

Maura opens her eyes, and looks at Jane, groggy.

JANE: (Smirking) "Yeah?"

MAURA: (Smiles) "Mm-hmm."

Jane leans over and kisses Maura's forehead, as she brushes her hair to the side. Trying to get a good look at her face.

JANE: (Looking at Maura lovingly) "God, your beautiful."

Maura smiles, eyes closed.

Jane then leans down, kissing Maura's cheek. Her nose. Her shoulder. All of this affection, cause Maura to laugh and giggle.

Jane brings her lips down to Maura's, in a deep passionate kiss. Maura kisses back, just as deeply, wanting more of Jane.

This overwhelms Jane. Since it's been a long while since the two have been intimate.

Maura reaches for Jane, as Jane begins to climb on top of her.

As they continue their makeout session, Jane pulls away, quickly breaking the kiss. She then quickly starts to pull off her t-shirt. Maura does the same, reaching down, pulling her slip up, and over her head, leaving her fully nude.

Just then, Maura sits up, reaches over, placing her hand under the waistband of Jane's boxer shorts. Slowly massaging Jane's semi erect cock in her hand.

This causes Jane to lean back, closing her eyes. Taking in the pulsing pleasure that Maura's hand was doing to her.

JANE: (Moaning and groaning in pleasure) "Oh… fuck…"

MAURA: (Seductively) "Mmm. You like this?"

JANE: (Eyes still closed) "Mm-hmm."

Maura pulls Jane down again for another steamy kiss. Maura pulls away from Jane's now fully erect cock, and leaves her waistband, as the kiss heats up. And this time, the two get lost in each other again. Hands start to roam, caress each other's bodies.

Maura then starts to pull away.

MAURA: (Looking Jane in the eyes) "I wanna try something."

JANE: (Breathlessly) "Yeah?"

Maura then reaches up, bring Jane down for a reassuring kiss.

MAURA: "Yeah."

Maura then rolls Jane over onto her back, helping her pull her boxers shorts off. Maura then climbs on top of her. Staring down at Jane's erect penis, as it just bobs there.

She wraps her hand around the shaft, and began slowly stroking Jane; increasing the pressure every time she got to the tip.

This causes Jane to lay back, drawing in shallow breaths of pleasure.

Maura then scooted forward, grabbing Jane's penis again, and starts rubbing the head across her clit several times. Jane shudders. Jane felt like she was going to lose her mind.

Maura then pushes Jane's penis down, lying it flat on Jane's lower abdomen, facing towards Jane.

Maura then moves up, until her pussy lips straddles the underside of Jane's penis. Maura begins to rub her pussy, back and forth, along the under length of Jane's boner.

Both Jane and Maura lean back, breathing out shallow breaths. Taking in the pleasures they experience.

Maura plants her palms on Jane's breast below her, squeezing them, and running her hands around them, as she's sliding back and forth on top of the underside of Jane cock. Her pussy lips were hot and wet, and it felt almost like jacking off to Jane, but better.

Jane reached up towards Maura's breast, massaging them, and working her magic on Maura's nipples. Which caused Maura to let out a shallow, sharp squeal, and caused her to jerk her hips a bit too hard; causing the bed post to bang against the wall, making a loud knock.

This causes Jane to back off, and look at Maura, worriedly.

JANE: (Scared) "Shhhhhh! Maura. They're going to hear us."

But this 'fear of getting caught' only heightened Maura's arousal. And she starts to work harder on achieving orgasm.

Maura starts rocking her hips back and forth at a faster pace, which causes the bed to squeak, and the headboard to bang against the wall a few times.

But at this point, Jane was succumbing to the pleasures of this act, to care less about what noises they were making.

Maura's drawing in shallow pants, as her movements above Jane are getting more erratic. Jane can tell Maura's close. And as she looked down at the sight of Maura's wet pussy lips gliding up and down the length of her cock, it only heightened the experience, and that makes Jane get close to orgasmic bliss too.

The closer Maura got orgasm, the more she centers her grinding now to one part of Jane's shaft, the middle. Grinding down harder, with her eyes closed, and her mouth wide open, bringing in shallower breaths. Working her hips back and forth. Feeling her wet lips and clit glide along the scars, like pleasure points.

But Jane was already there…

JANE: (Panting a warning) "Maur… Imma…"

Jane closes her eyes and breaths in shallow breaths.

Maura grinds and jerks harder, causing the bed to shake, squeak and bang against the wall… BANG. BANG. BANG. BANG. BANG.

Jane quickly grabs a hold of Maura's hips with both hands, helping her glide back and forth faster. That's when Jane squints her face hard, as she feels a squeeze from down below, and SHOOT…

JANE: "UGGGGGHHHH!"

A long rope of cum comes shooting out of Jane, up towards her chest. And then another one, this one shorter. And another, shorter than the last.

And with seeing Jane cumming, causes Maura to finally succumb to her own orgasm. Which causes her to halt her movements' above Jane, and let out a final exclamation of pleasure in a shallow sharp breath.

The two moan out, as they continue riding out their orgasms. Jane takes in the mess on her stomach.

Maura then purposely, glides her pussy up a bit, and put her pussy opening in line with the tip of Jane's still wet, cum dripping, erect penis, and took Jane's penis inside her. Sliding all the way down to the base.

This causes Jane to shudder in pleasure, and Maura to moan out in pleasure.

Maura then proceeds to ride Jane's penis, up and down, in a slowest pace possible. Teasingly. Trying to feel, and savor every inch and every scar along Jane's penis.

As her penis slowly pumps inside Maura, Jane tries to squeeze every last drop of her cum inside Maura. Finding this whole experience erotic and pleasurable.

JANE: (Breathlessly) "Damn, Maura. What brought this on?"

Maura smiles proudly, knowing that she brought Jane to the most blissful orgasm yet.

MAURA: "You like it?"

Jane only answers with a depleted grunt, as she grabs Maura's hips with her hands, and pushes her penis in Maura, as far as she could above her, for one last, good push.

MAURA: (Smirks) "Satisfied?"

Jane smiles at Maura, running her hand up and down Maura's right thigh.

JANE: "You're going to be the death of me. You know that?"

MAURA: (Seductively) "I hope not. Because I'm not done with you yet."

Jane groans in pleasure.

That's when Maura seductively reached down with her hand, running her fingers along the cum on Jane's stomach. She then gives Jane one last flirtation look, and brings the fingers to her mouth. Tasting Jane.

Yup, I'm dead. Jane thought.

As Maura leans down to give Jane a kiss, Jane's now semi-soft penis slips out of Maura.

MAURA: "Happy Mother's Day Jane."

JANE: (Smiles back) "Happy Mother's Day."

Maura gives Jane a sweet kiss, and then pulls away. Jane curiously licks her lips, wondering what she taste like. But really couldn't get a distinct taste of herself off Maura's lips. Which Jane found a bit peculiar.

Maura found Jane's expression cute. She then chuckles as she removed herself from Jane, and laid down right next to her on the bed. Staring at her, running her hand up and down Jane's side.

MAURA: "Looks like you're going to need another shower."

Jane chuckles as she turn her head, looking at Maura.

JANE: "Yeah."

MAURA: "Care to join me?"

Jane looks off surprised.

JANE: "Uh… yeah." [Sits up on her elbows] "I just gotta find some more shampoo and stuff."

MAURA: (Rises off the bed) "Oh that's okay. I have some in my bag over there."

Maura gestures at one of her bags next to the closet. Jane stares at it curiously. She never noticed it there until now.

JANE: "Huh. Sneaky little thing, are ya?"

Maura chuckles as she heads to it. Jane meanwhile, tries cautiously to get up off the bed without getting her cum on anything.

About an hour later…

Jane comes strutting down the steps, fully dressed for the day.

She finds her father, and brothers sitting in the living room, watching TV.

JANE: (To the room) "Hey."

Frank's the only one who says "hey" back. Meanwhile, her brothers look at her, smirking at her, as if they know something.

JANE: "What?"

Both Frankie and Tommy say "nothing" back, as they giggle and laugh. As if they know something embarrassing about her.

But Jane choses to ignore it, and heads towards the kitchen.

IN THE KITCHEN

Angela is there cleaning up the kitchen, when Jane enters.

JANE: (Cheerfully) "Hey Ma!"

Angela turns around.

ANGELA: "Oh. Hi honey. Did you enjoy your late morning nap?"

Angela asks, as Jane heads towards the coffee maker on the counter.

JANE: "Uh… yeah. It was great."

Jane grabs a mug, and pours herself some coffee. While Angela smirks at her.

Angela: "Isn't there something you'd like to say to me?"

Jane pauses a moment, then realizes.

JANE: (Panics) "Oh, shit." [Puts down her mug and rushes to her mother] "I'm sorry Ma." [Hugs her mother] "Happy Mother's Day, Ma!" [Breaks the hug] "I'm sorry, I blew you off this morning. If you want, I can make you a late breakfast, or lunch to make up for it."

ANGELA: "Nah. That's alright, sweetie. Happy Mother's Day to you too."

Jane smiles.

ANGELA: "And honey?"

Jane stares at Angela, curiously. As Angela grabs some sheets from one of the linen closets, and hands them to Jane.

ANGELA: "Change the sheets in your bedroom before you leave today."

This cause Jane to squirm and blush from embarrassment. Knowing that her mother must of heard them making love this morning.

JANE: "You know?"

ANGELA: "Honey, even though I have a rule for my children, no sex in the house. But, in yours and Maura's case, I'll make an exception. As long as it brings me another grandchild. I don't care."

JANE: (Awkwardly) "Thanks ma."

ANGELA: "Just clean up after yourselves. Is all I ask for."

And with that Angela was satisfied.

A couple of minutes later…

Jane and James were in the kitchen cooking up some pancakes for lunch. Since they missed breakfast.

When Maura enters, newly showered and dressed.

As James and Jane see her enter…

JANE & JAMES: (In unison) "Happy Mother's Day!"

Maura was surprised by this.

MAURA: "Oh, wow. Thank you."

Maura went up to her son, hugging him. Then to Jane, giving her another hug. And lastly, to Angela. She said her 'Happy Mother's Day' to her, and Angela said it back, along with a hug back.

That's when Jane presented Maura with an envelope.

JANE: "Happy Mother's Day."

Maura took it, moved by the gesture.

JANE: "Just so you know, I hate shopping for gifts. So, I went with something, I'm hoping you would like."

MAURA: "Jane anything from you, I'd like."

JANE: (Sarcastically) "I wish I knew about this earlier."

Maura smiles at Jane, as she opens the envelope and looks at the contents inside, questioningly.

Maura pulls out some charms: A heart, and two J's.

That's when Jane reaches into her pocket, pulling out a charm bracelet.

Maura stares at it in awe.

JANE: "So… I wanted to get you something that was fun and personal. And ma came up with this idea."

ANGELA: "I always wanted a charm bracelet."

They laugh.

JANE: "And that's what I bought her last night, when we went shopping for her gift. And I wanted you to have your own too."

Jane puts the bracelet on Maura's arm. She then reaches for the charms. Placing them on the bracelet one by one. All the while explain what each charm means.

JANE: (Putting the heart one on) "This is to represent our love and compassion for each other." [Puts one of the J's on] "This one is for me." [Puts the other J on] "For James."

Maura smiles tearfully.

JANE: (Hold Maura's hand in hers) "And…"

Jane looks to her mother. So does Maura.

That's when Angela hold out an extra charm. Jane takes it from her mother's hand, and shows it to Maura.

It's a charm that says the word: FAMILY

JANE: (While putting the 'family' charm on) "Of course, Ma always says 'Family is the most important thing.'"

ANGELA: "And we're family." [Maura looks at Angela, moved by her words] "You're my daughter too."

Angela goes over and hugs Maura. Which causes Maura to break down. She always wanted to be in a loving, caring family. And to have a mother's love. That's so accepting and comforting, and forgiving. Which was one that she was not getting from her mother.

And that's when Maura realized: Just like James, she's one of them now too. And she was proud to be.

As the hug breaks, Jane lights up excitedly.

JANE: (To Maura) "So, what did you get me?"

Maura tearfully laughs. Knowing that her present sucks now, in comparison to Jane's and James'.

MAURA: (Emotionally sorry) "Celtics tickets for you and James."

Jane is shocked.

JANE: (Gasps in shock) "Oh my God. I love you."

Jane hugs a crying Maura now.

JANE: "You know what I like."

Maura starts sniffling back her tears.

MAURA: "You really like it?"

JANE: (Breaks the embrace) "Are you kidding, I love it." [Reminding Maura] "Anything sports related."

She wipes Maura's tears away. Knowing that she may still be overwhelmed by everything going on with her own mother.

JANE: (Comforting) "Don't cry. Okay? You did good. Alright? I love you."

Jane gives Maura a sweet kiss. And hugs her again.

JANE: (Smiling) "Happy Mother's Day."

MAURA: (Lets out a chuckle and a smile) "Happy Mother's Day."

That's when James comes up, and hugs his parents too, which hug him back.

JAMES: (Happily) "Happy Mother's Day."

JANE: (Whispers to her) "Everything is going to be okay."

Maura nods against her. Wishing and hoping so.

A/N: Uh, I kind of went back and forth with the whole little league thing. At first, I was going to have him make the team. But after reviewing his progress in this story, I just felt that James isn't there yet, at being good at sports. Especially if it's a sport he doesn't really play. So, we'll see how he progresses.

And Constance, wow. I had a hard time writing that whole scene. Cause for a while there, it was just a blank sheet, I had no idea what to write. Just so you know, there's going to be more Constance to come. Especially in the next chapter. And oh man, that's going to be crazy. #FamilyDrama

And in case you guys are wondering, yes Maura will eventually tell Constance about Jane. Maura just doesn't feel ready to deal with her parents reaction over Jane being the father. Especially at this point in Maura's somewhat broken relationship with her parents.
