Every thing with a soul has a story. Whether it be unique or average, it does not matter in the end. Eventually all stories come to an end, and new ones begin. But what of the stories of those that have left this world, of those who had sacrificed for the greater good or of the ones who had corrupted harmed, and destroyed everything in their path? Well, it's a real shame to say, all their names will be forgotten along with their deeds, and yet we all live within their accomplishments. We don't know it, but because of all those souls, whether it be human, animal, or plant, we are all here today, living, fighting, crying, and enjoying what they have given us, and have taught us. So even when their names are forgotten, their memory lives on in our world, as well as in the hearts of the people who knew and loved them.

Ch. 35 The lost souls

Black*Star and Tsubaki were now in the nurses office, having their injuries treated. Their nurse Medusa, was now cleaning the deep wounds that Black*Star had received from the demons they had fought. Black*Star was just trying to keep a straight face, while his wounds were being cleaned. With every swab, the pain he felt grew more intense. It especially hurt when Medusa would clean the scratch marks on his chest, it seemed the demon was trying to get at his heart. Well, it had failed in it's attempt, which was no surprise to Black*Star, since a star like him couldn't be killed that easily.

Still, he could not deny that the demon had almost done exactly that. If not for Tark, Black*Star was sure he and Tsubaki wouldn't have survived the night. That was another problem though, Tark was not going to leave them alone, he just kept insisting that he had to "Stay by his masters side, for that was his purpose."

Since they couldn't shake him, they had made him agree to staying out of sight. Right now, he was hiding underneath the ground, right outside of the school, where he would wait until his "Master" would move. This really annoyed Black*Star, he didn't need to be looked after by some strange man-scopion...thing. He didn't need anyone else, besides he already had Tsubaki. Black*Star was sure if he just kept training with her, he could overcome anything in his way. Someone like Tark would only get in his way, if he wanted to become stronger, then he had to do this on his own.

"You look like crap." a voice mocked, as Black*Star and Tsubaki's eyes widened in surprise. The two then looked, and saw that Soul and Maka were now standing by the doorway. There was silence for a whole moment, until Tsubaki spoke up, and said in a relieved voice, "You're both okay, thank goodness. What happened to you both? Are you all right?"

Soul and Maka just smiled, as Maka said, "We're the ones who should be asking you two. What happened to you guys?" Black*Star not wanting to explain the events of last night, retorted, "You guys first, tell us why Lord Death had said you two went missing." Soul and Maka just looked at each other for a moment, and Maka told them, "It's a long story, and were not suppose to say anything." Black*Star and Tsubaki just gave the two confused looks, they couldn't say anything, what was that suppose to mean?

Before the two could question any further, Soul asked again, "So what happened to you guys? Did you bite off more then you could chew big man?" Black*Star just gave Soul an annoyed glare, and replied, "Nothing's to big for a star like me, this is just a scratch. Once nurse Medusa get's back here with her special medicine, I'll be on my feet again in no time."

Tsubaki just looked at Black*Star as if he were crazy, she had thought he would at least take a break after last night. Sure, it wasn't surprising that Black*Star would ignore his injuries, but this was just too much, he now had wounds all over his body, and she was sure they would all become scars.

For now, Tsubaki just wanted Black*Star to take it easy, and wait for his injuries to heal. Even if nurse Medusa had some kind of "Special medicine" that could heal all his injuries in a heartbeat, she was against the idea of Black*Star risking life and limb, just to become the best. If anything, it was proving what Tark had told her, and the only thing she could do for her meister was tell him to listen to reason.

"Black*Star," Tsubaki spoke up in a kind voice, "I think you should...wait a while before you go back to training." This caused Black*Star to cock an eyebrow in confusion, as Tsubaki went on and said, "I mean, we did just barely survive last night, and you shouldn't strain yourself, at least not when your in this condition."

"Don't worry," Soul said, getting the two's attention, "You can trust nurse Medusa when it comes to serious wounds." "How are you so sure?" Tsubaki asked, hoping Soul would not answer. Sadly this did not happen, as Soul replied, "Because if not for her, I'd still have a huge scar across my chest." Maka just turned to Soul in surprise, he couldn't have been serious, that wound was deep enough to have left a mark at least. Maka knew what Soul meant when he said "Scar", it was the huge wound that strange kid had left on Soul when Hollow saved them that night in Italy.

Maka then asked, "Soul...that wound across your chest...are you saying it's gone?" Soul nodded his head, and replied, "Yeah, the medicine nurse Medusa gave me really worked." He then lifted his sweater, and showed Maka that the wound was indeed gone, as if Soul was never hurt to begin with."See, I'll be back on my feet in no time." Black*Star said, getting Maka out of her shocked state.

"Still, I would listen to Tsubaki on this," Maka suggested, "Rest a while, before you try to get yourself killed again." Black*Star only smiled, which told them all that he wasn't going to listen, and continue training anyway. The two wished that Kid, Liz, and Patty were here, they would have agreed, and maybe get Black*Star to listen.

'Speaking of which, where exactly are they?' Maka thought, wondering where those three had gone. Where ever they were, Maka just hoped they had better luck on their mission then she and the others all had. It would be nice to see a friend that hasn't been beaten to a bloody pulp by some monster or demon, that should have went extinct a long time ago.

In the Baltic sea

Kid stood at the end of a row boat, as Liz and Patty rowed out into the sea. They had been sent on a mission to find, and destroy a great beast that has been taking the souls of people in a village. The beast that had done so was said to be a ship by the name of Black dragon, a haunted ship that Kid assumed was a sunken ship from the ancient viking times.

This though was not the only thing bothering Kid at the moment. Aside from the mission he, Liz, and Patty were now embarking on, Kid had to wonder what had happened to his father. There was definitely something his father was trying to hide, Kid could sense it within his only thing Kid could piece together, was that his teacher Hollow had something to do with the new threats he and his friends were now facing. Ever since Hollow had arrived in their city, Kid had noticed the strange behavior his father, and everyone else was exhibiting toward him.

With Patty, it seemed there was some sort of familiar bond. Within his sister Deedee, he had seen change, never before had he known his sister to open up or actually connect with someone, she was usually indifferent. The biggest difference Kid had noticed, was that his father seemed to actually...fear Hollow. The idea was ridiculous at first, especially when his father hadn't been that way when he had first met Hollow. It was only after their first mission in class Cerberus, that Kid had seen a drastic change in his father's behavior. He went from carefree to very cautious, and even asked to keep a close eye on the undead.

To Kid, it seemed that his father feared what Hollow was. It was as if...his father had a terrifying encounter with someone like Hollow before. This idea was possible, Hollow had said that he came from a time long, long ago, his father could have fought people like him. One thing still bothered Kid though, and it was the idea that his father had not been completely honest. Ever since Hollow had told him of another death god named Nito, Kid had taken it upon himself to try, and discover the truth about his supposed grandfather.

So far, all records and legends of a time as old as Hollow says he is, is nonexistent. To Kid this meant, that Hollow could have either been exaggerating, or that he came from a world so old, all records of such a place had been lost and forgotten. Though in light of all the evidence Kid had witnessed, it seemed that the answer pointed toward lost and forgotten.

The new beasts he had encountered, were nothing like he or any of his friends, had ever faced before. If anything, it was undisputable evidence towards this lost time in human history. Yet, in light of all that's happened with the beasts, and their immortal teacher going missing, Death would not tell the truth.

The only one that actually knew the truth, other then his father, was his sister Deedee. Kid knew this, because right before she left to find Hollow, she had been in a very bad state. She kept rambling about how people lied, and kept herself secluded in her apartment, not wanting anyone to see her. Needless to say, Kid had been worried about her condition, she was his sister after all, and he could only shutter at the memory he had of her before she left.

Flashback

It had been three days after Hollow's disappearance, and Death had sent Kid to see how Deedee had been taking it. To Kid, the task was easier said then done, he hated having to see Deedee when she was depressed. She would always go into a rage, and would talk about how cruel the world was without purpose.

Honestly, Kid just saw it all as annoying, really who would do things like-. Then Kid just stopped himself, if anything it just proved that he and Deedee were related. He could at least do the brotherly thing, and help his sister out of this hole she had dug herself into, besides he was already at the then took hold of the knob, and turned it, only for the door to fall forward. Kid just stared at the doorway, as he examined the hole that was the doorway. On closer inspection, Kid was able to deduce that the door had been broken down by some heavy object. It couldn't have been Deedee, she cold be vicious, yes, but usually she would cut things down to pieces.

'Oh well.' Kid thought, as he dropped the investigation of the door. It wasn't why he was there, and Deedee didn't seem to mind it, so he just left it where it lay. He then checked out the apartment, which looked as if someone had raided the entire place. The sofa had been slashed, the T.V. was smashed, and everything had been flipped over.

In seeing this, Kid wondered if even talking to Deedee was a good idea, he had seen her upset before, but this was not like the others. Whenever Deedee would get depressed, she would pretend as if nothing was bothering her, but would act bitter toward people, and say that they were of course knew that she was only venting her anger. He knew she was only saying these things, because she was really angry with herself. She would get angry, because for some unknown reason, she was not compatible with any meister their father could find for her.

To Kid, it all just didn't make any sense, there were literally hundreds of meisters they had tried out, and none could so much as pick her up. This was what made Deedee paranoid, she just assumed people were against her, and cut herself off from any contact. She would say that she didn't need them, and that she had been fine with being on her own for a long time.

Kid didn't believe that was true, if anything, Deedee just made it more obvious that she was hurting. What was worse, she would talk to some imaginary boyfriend named Warren, a man who his father had said was dead for a long time. But now was different, instead of all the things she would usually do, Deedee had resorted to violent out bursts.

At this point, Kid could only think of three reasons she was acting this way now. She was either frustrated at losing her one and only meister, she felt betrayed, or she just really cared for Hollow that much, since she was never one to cry. Whichever the answer, it just meant Deedee was hurting real bad, and was losing it.

Once Kid was finished searching the living room and kitchen, he finally went to the bedroom. He then looked around, and saw nothing, until he heard something behind the bed on the other side of the room. When he saw what was behind it, he saw Deedee curled up into a ball, rocking back and forth...crying. 'She is actually crying?' Kid thought, not knowing what to do or say. This was not the only thing he had noticed, Deedee's hair was messy, she stunk really bad, and it looked as if she hadn't slept in awhile.

Kid honestly did not know how he should approach her, he was use to just calming her down when she was angry. There had never been a time he had to comfort her when she would cry, because she usually considered the idea of doing so as weak and helpless. In fact, the only time he had ever seen her cry, was when Hollow had died on that mission.

Now here she was, just letting herself go, not even caring if anyone saw her like this. "Deedee," Kid gently spoke, "It's been three days now, everyone is getting worried." Deedee just looked at him with a tear-stained face, and replied, "You're just lying, just like dad is, and just like "He" did." Kid only cocked an eyebrow, as he asked, "Lying? Why would you think I'm lying? And what do you mean dad's a liar?"

Deedee just gave him a blank expression, until she started to giggle like a child. Kid found the childish laughter very disturbing, he was sure he could hear some dark undertone, if he listened closely. "No one really cares," Deedee stated, "DAD just sent you to check on my condition...to see if I'm not planning anything...out of the ordinary."

"That's not why," Kid tried to reassure, "Dad really does care for you, and I do as well." Again Kid only heard that childish laugh, but this time he could hear some hostility to it. Deedee then said, "There's just so much you don't know about him, so I can't really get angry at you. If you knew what he's done to both me and your teacher, then you wouldn't be here on his behalf."

'What is she talking about?' Kid thought, 'What don't I know about my father, and what does Hollow have to do with anything?' Kid then looked at Deedee straight in the eyes, and asked her, "What is it I don't know, and what does Hollow have to do with this? Is he responsible for the creatures we've faced? Does dad know more about this then he's letting on?"

"You know...I've failed as a weapon." Deedee answered instead, "And I tried...I tried so hard, but nothing worked. I had tried being myself, I had tried to be funny, I had tried to "Appeal" to his nature, I stood by his side when he needed me..." Deedee then stopped as she trailed off, as if in deep thought of what to say next. To Kid, this situation seemed to be growing more intense as they talked, but he needed to know what Deedee knew about all of this.

Kid waited for her to finish, but she just kept staring into space, as if she was looking beyond something. Not wanting to waste time, Kid spoke up, and said, "Deedee if you know anything, then pl-" "THAT BASTARD BETRAYED ME." Deedee shouted, as new tears fell from her face. "I ACTUALLY BELIEVED HIS LIES LIKE AN OBEDIENT DOG, AND HE USED ME ONLY TO BENEFIT HIMSELF. I TRIED SO HARD TO BE A GOOD GIRL, BUT HE NEVER SAW ME AS ANYTHING ELSE BUT MEANS TO AN END, I CAN'T BELIEVE I PITIED HIM, AND THOUGHT HE WAS STILL HUMAN. HE JUST HATED ME THIS ENTIRE TIME, AND I BELIEVED HIM WHEN HE TOLD ME HE UNDERSTOOD ME."

Deedee continued to shout, "I KNOW THIS, I KNOW IT ALL NOW, SO WHY, WHY DO I FEEL THIS WAY? HE HATES ME, SO I HATE HIM BACK, SO WHY AM I CRYING FOR HIM, WHY DOES IT HURT SO MUCH. ALL THESE FEELINGS ARE SO CONFUSING, I JUST WANT TO HURT HIM FOR DOING WHAT HE'S DONE TO ME. IN FACT, IF HE EVER COMES BACK, I'LL FIND HIM, AND I'LL RIP OUT THAT COLD DEAD HEART."

As Deedee continued her rant, Kid was trying to find a way to calm her down. There was one thing Kid knew he could say, but he knew that just by saying all this, things could either get better or much worse. Taking a deep breath, Kid told Deedee, "Hollow wanted to stay by your side." At these mere words, Deedee stopped shouting, and looked straight at Kid straight in the eyes.

Her stare was cold, but Kid went on and said, "I know this, because that day we went to find Excalibur, I told him of your struggles. That was the day he decided to stay by your side, to fight with you instead of against you. He didn't show you or tell you, because A warrior like him, is probably not use to demonstrating emotion. Don't you remember how scared he had been when dad sent us on that mission in Ireland? He knew how dangerous the mission was, and told my father not to give us the mission. In that moment of fear, he had been vulnerable, you could tell by the way he acted. When you called him a coward, he told us of the terrible fates that would await us in facing those beasts. This just may be my opinion, but I think Hollow did care for you, and everyone else, despite the way he acted, it's probably why he left."

Of course Kid didn't know what he was talking about when he said this. Still, it had managed to calm Deedee down, and sent her into another daze. It didn't take long for her to snap out of this one, she was now looking at Kid, as if realizing a terrible mistake. "You're right," Deedee said in a hushed tone, "If anyone is to blame...it's me."

At this, Kid just shook his arms, trying to tell Deedee that what she said, wasn't what he meant. Deedee then said, "I've failed as weapon in more ways than one, and because of those mistakes, Hollow doesn't trust me." She then started tearing, as she continued saying, "I'm garbage, I was a terrible partner, I can't believe what I was thinking. Hollow is out there fighting for us, and here I am actually believing dad when he said Hollow had betrayed us."

Kid seeing that as his opportunity, then asked, "Interesting subject you brought up, what did dad actually say about Hollow?" Deedee though ignored this, and continued her negative ranting, saying, "I was never supportive, and I kept calling him ugly, and for what, cause I got self concious about my body." For Kid, the whole conversation was now becoming uncomfortable, he didn't want to hear about the things she and Hollow discussed.

Thankfully, she had stopped talking about it, but now was ridiculous things. She was now saying, "Who snaps at their partner for comparing someone elses boobs to another? I can't believe how stupid I was, I should just die now, no one deserves trash like me." At this moment, Kid couldn't help but feel some kind of irony. 'Is this really what Liz and Patty have to deal with?'

If it was, then Kid knew he had to cheer Deedee up somehow. Her depression seemed to be linked to Hollow, so he was sure Deedee would stop her crying by using Hollow. Kid then went to knee level, and patted Deedee on the shoulder, as he told her, "Hollow wouldn't want that for you, he would want you to keep strong, so that you two can fight together again. Trust me when I say he's missing everyone, including you right now."

"You really think so?" Deedee said, with high hopes in her voice. Kid only nodded, causing Deedee to smile, and pull him into a death hug. She then got on her feet, and started to swing Kid around, saying, "I have the greatest little brother ever. Thank you, just thank you so much, because of you my life has purpose again." For Kid, what she had said sounded just sad, but he was glad to help her out of her depression. Maybe now she would tell him what their dad knew about Hollow, and these ancient beasts.

Flashback end

But she didn't, as soon as she was done swinging him around the room, she left in a hurry to find Hollow, and aid him in his endeavors. Kid knew this because his father had told him of Deedee's decision to leave. Because of what he had told her, Deedee got it into her head that Hollow needed her now more than ever, and asked where his location had been sensed. Even worse, Kid realized he had helped her own unhealthy obsession, which would likely get her killed.

Kid could only wish her safe return, since everything was now uncertain. He wasn't blind to the events that had gone on since Hollow's arrival, more of those mysterious fog gates have appeared all over the world. This made Kid certain that war was very well on the way, and that many innocent lives would be lost. He was sure, that if no one uncovered what was going on soon, their teacher would not be the only one among the lost souls. Right now all his friends were in danger, and Kid was only hoped, that where ever they were they would not join the lost.

"Uh Kid," Liz nervously spoke, "W-w-what is this?" Patty just answered her sister's question, saying, "Cloud." Kid then looked around, and saw that their boat had been covered in a mysterious mist. "We're getting close?" Kid answered, causing Liz to shiver in fear.

For an entire moment, everything had been quiet, but the next thing the three knew, a giant red-eye had appeared in the mist. Liz's mouth fell agape, as the owner of the eye revealed itself to be a giant ship. Kid and Patty just looked at the ship, as Kid said, "That is the black dragon."

Liz, having never seen a creature like it, shouted, "WHAT IS THAT THING?" Kid then looked at the side of the ship, and found letters at its front deck. Patty also noticed these letters, and read "Ni-d-ho-gg." Kid then clarified what the letters meant, and said, "Nidhogg is the name of the black dragon that appears in Norse mythology. Also there is a legend in this area of a ghost ship, named the Nidhogg, that was told as though it were true. Now it all connects."

Kid then pointed towards the ship, and said, "All right! Liz, Patty, we're going aboard!" Liz was immediately against the idea, and kept waving her arms around, as she repeatedly said no, but Patty didn't listen. Instead, Patty started rowing as hard as she could, which meant they were going as fast as a speed boat.

Kid just held tight to the front, yelling at Patty to wait, stop, and slow down. Patty didn't listen, she just kept rowing, until the boat, and Kid's face crashed into the black dragon. Though Kid's nose was now bleeding, he immediately got back up, and yelled at Patty, saying, "IF YOU'RE GOING TO RAM THEM, HIT THEM IN THE EXACT MIDDLE OF THE SHIP."

"That's what you're angry about?" said Liz, who was trying to recover from the crash that left her head spinning. Kid and Patty didn't listen, and did the same exact thing, as their boat crashed into the middle of the black dragon from behind. Kid just ignored his bleeding nose, as he said, "All right, let's board them."

Liz, still trying to recover from her dizzyness, began to tell the two, "You guys are idiots. No, you're worse than idiots. You idiotic jerks are idiots, and idiotic-" Before she could finish her insult, Liz had realized she had inadvertently went aboard the black dragon.

On the ship, were the bones of it's victims, that were tied to the mast. Their bones also littered the floor, as the three looked around the ships deck. All of them had these terrible looks, as if they had suffered before they had died a terrible death. The three just side stepped the bones, to show their respect, whoever they had been, they didn't deserve to die this way. Kid then spoke, and said, "It would seem that the souls are inside the ship. We're going in." Patty just answered with an okay, while Liz slowly made her way along, saying, "H-hey now, let's not. Th-the ghosts are sure to appear...What do we do if they eat us? Are you listening to me? Are you ignoring me?"

A chill then went up Liz's spine as she turned around, and saw nothing but the mist. This was a bad idea, she just knew it, but those two were not going to listen. All Liz knew, was that this was all going to end badly, ghosts were to pop out, and eat their souls. As she followed Kid and Patty into the ship, Liz couldn't help but feel that a pair of eyes were now watching their every move. 'Yep,' Liz thought, 'This is going to end badly.'

Okay so I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. To those who had seen E3, project beast is Bloodborne, I repeat the new souls game is called Bloodborne. Say what you like, I still consider Bloodborne to be a part of the souls series. Either way hate it, love it, review.
