The room burst with an explosive noise as the government official that had been listening to the entire press conference called for a trial Jurassic World v. InGen. The woman on the screen on InGen's behalf scowled for a moment before the screen went totally black.
"A date for the trial will have to be decided before any actions are to take place," The government official from Costa Rica announced to the prying reporters. "Until then, we are placing the C.E.O. of InGen James Young, the head of the science division Dr. Henry Wu, and anyone associated in the attack on Jurassic World in detainment until the date is set. Until then the conference is over."
And within the snap of a finger the screen the senator was on disappeared into darkness as well, leaving the noisy reporters to get statements from Emma, Hunter, Claire, Alexis, and Adair, all of them were directed to stay quite until the press coverage had fled the room.
Emma's heart was beating at a rapid pace. James was in detainment, she was free until the trial. For the first time in forever, she didn't have to fear anything. She could walk by herself without the constant threat of being killed by one of InGen's operatives. She was relieved that she no longer had to live in fear from InGen anymore, now that everyone knew of their intent to sell militarized animals to personal armies.
She caught herself looking in the crowd of reporters for a familiar set of eyes. Anyone's that she knew of. Alan or Felix, but primarily she wanted to seek out Owen's. How she wished he saw how selfless she was, how charismatic, not a single tear was shed during her tale of the time spent in InGen's presence. As a captive. Something that will haunt her forever even though the looming threat of James was gone.
She scanned through the crowd to only find a pair of familiar grey eyes locked on her. Her father grinned as he caught her sight, forcing her to smile in return for acknowledgment. She had worried about him as well. He lived alone, in the middle of Montana which was almost absent of human life as well. An easy target for people to just forget about or not realize he was missing, until his daughters or peers tried to get in touch.
He stood out among the rest of the people in the room, wearing a simple brown sweater vest and a red tie seemed to stand out amongst the crowd of black expensive suits. He always had a knack for dressing casual during formal situation, his sense of style dated him.
She embraced her smiling father for a long while, knowing that she'd be safe and everyone she knew would be fine. He smelt strongly of after shave but the familiar scent of him was comforting to her. "I'm proud of you. You did a very adult thing." Alan complimented as he continued to hug her, almost suffocating her in the borrowed blazer from the lost and found. No doubt he would be throwing it away after all the sweat he had procreated in it.
Emma pried away from her father to take in his features, the matted brown and greying hair attaching to his sweat drenched forehead, the small dimples that accompanied a warm smile. "Kate? Mom?" She questioned him, wanting to know how they were doing.
Alan rolled his eyes teasingly as he remembered the conversation he had with the both of them. Kate was naturally worried but excited, while Lucy was sent into a pure meltdown mode. Alan hadn't talked to Lucy for that long since their separation. It was pleasant. The scenario wasn't but just the constant conversation and check ups made him realize how much he had missed out on being with someone. He just was too consumed in his work.
"Peachy." Alan replied to her. As she thought about her mother and her sister she pondered on how she was sure to be lectured by her mother and teased by Kate. Especially Kate. It was one of the first times she had seen her genuinely mad at her and in front of Sam.
She pulled away, frowning, as she thought of the cringeworthy way she acted while she was in the presence of Sam, a person who technically wasn't in their kooky family (but no doubt wanted to). "Sam?" Her voice trembled a little as she brought it up to her father, who nodded his head. "He's Sam. He doesn't care, nor do I think he has the guts to care. You know how much of a whiner he is."
"True." She agreed. She did a brief glance around the room, noting that there was only a handful of people in the room compared to the hundreds that crowded there earlier.
There was no sight of Owen. Her heart dropped a bit, it felt as if he ego had deflated. She wanted to forgive him for the past few days, and for the break up and how immature it was. She felt flustered as she thought of the break up, she blamed herself for being stupid and selfish. Before she could ask her father where Owen had snuck off to there was a small cough from behind her.
Her heart sped up, hoping it was him but as she turned to face the lurking presence from behind, she saw the woman who spoke about her grandfather, John Hammond. The woman was excitedly smiling at her and her father, like she had known them for years. She stuck her hand out towards Emma to introduce herself.
She wasted no time in grasping the woman's hand, she had closed the conference with a mind blowing statement that made everyone see how evil James had turned InGen into. She basically owed her her life. "Alexis Murphy," The woman stated, Emma in turn tried to introduce herself but Alexis cut her off. "Emma Grant, yes, I've heard a lot about you." The stranger beamed a dazzling smile at her. Emma felt her cheeks grow hot with embarrassment. "Good things?"
"Mostly," Alexis replied with a smirk.
Alexis turned to face her attention towards the older gentleman, a smile spreading widely across her face as if she couldn't hold it. After all these years she was seeing him again. It was hard for her to not tear up a bit at the sight of him. "And of course I know you," She grinned at her father who also held a smile on his face. "It's been years, Lex." Her father greeted, hugging the girl tightly and briefly.
It finally clicked in Emma's head on who the girl was, after she was staring at her confused. Alexis was the girl who had hacked the system of Jurassic Park and saved them, Alan had saved her and her brother occasionally from the dinosaurs that escaped at the first park.
"Where's Tim?" Alan questioned, earning a teasing scoff from the girl. "Oh, you know, he's off in Antarctica. Exploring and hoping to find some dinosaur bones for his exhibit in California." Alexis explained in a nonchalant voice as if it weren't amazing news.
Emma had heard that there had been theories of dinosaur fossils in Antarctica but no one had been funded enough or had the experience to dig in subzero temperatures. The boy who her father had talked about getting electrocuted and lived was now doing the most incredible thing she's ever heard of in the name of science. This family was amazing.
"Lex," Emma breathed out in realization, earning her attention. Ellie had talked nonstop about how amazing she was, taking over the Hammond Wildlife Center in Kenya, but more or less, saving their lives. Saving her life. "Let me buy you a drink. It's the least I can do for you. Y-you for saved my father's life and now for saving mine from James."
Alexis shrugged her shoulders as if it were no big deal on what she had just done for them, for her. "Oh, I don't drink." She stated with a small chuckle. "And truth be told, I always wanted InGen to stop after my grandfather passed away. Now was the perfect time." She informed her with almost a hint of sadness in her tone.
Emma watched her with concerned eyes as Alexis shift from her and her father to down towards the ground for a moment. It must've been hard for her to watch her grandfathers company be corrupted by James. She placed a hand on her shoulder and offered her a smile. "How about lunch then?" She offered.
The afternoon seemed to fly by after the conference. Alexis and Emma chatted for a while at lunch, Alexis telling her everything Alan had done to save her and her brothers life at Jurassic Park. Usually Emma hated hearing stories about her fathers time at the old park but it was refreshing to get a new perspective of the events that took place.
She had never heard about the raptors being in the kitchen or when Rexie slammed her muzzle through the top part of their car to try to get them. Her stories were far more interesting than her fathers.
Lex was amazed at the fact that Alan would let his daughter come and work for Jurassic World, let alone that he would step foot on this island again. She had a good laugh after finding out that he was actually tricked into coming back by Emma, while also showing concern that he was present for the Indominous incident. She had known about the Indominous as well from her daily emails she received from Simon Masrani.
Alan wasn't the only survivor of the first park to come back. Lex and Tim were issued to come down to check out the new conditions of the new park, an order from Simon Masrani himself. It was upscale an luxurious to say the least but it still haunted them. Lex couldn't sleep the entire time she was there, thinking everything would go bad once again and having to deal with a raptor in her room. The thought of it was chilling.
"So are you heading back to California tonight?" Alan questioned, earning a shake of her head as she chewed into her sandwich. "Well, kind of. I have to go back to the wildlife sanctuary in Kenya. So I have to go back to L.A., then there's a stop in Dublin, a stop in Ethiopia, and then I'm in the clear to head to Jomo." She answered after quickly chewing her mouthful of food. "Don't get me wrong, I'd love a vacation in paradise but this isn't paradise to me."
"I hear ya," Alan cheered.
"Besides, I dropped everything to come here after Elon called me and asked me to speak out against James. It felt right. So I'm sure everything is chaotic without me there."
Emma felt a pit of remorse fill her stomach. Lex had left her work, the wildlife center just to come and aid them in turning in James. She knew it was important but not important enough to have Lex skip out on her job.
"Speaking of chaos," Lex trailed off with a smirk. "Oh, great. Here we go," Alan huffed out with a teasing eye roll. "Dr. Malcolm's ex wife works with us at the wildlife center."
Emma could care less about Ian Malcolm, or his new girlfriend who decided to latch on to her bump without permission. She wasn't a fan of his books, or how her father talked about him. She really wasn't a fan after they had met as well.
Her attention trailed off as she looked out of the window as they continued to talk about Ian Malcolm and his ex wife. Everything on Main Street looked beautiful, the flowers along side the gift shops and restaurants were blooming, the sun streamed rays through the clouds in the sky. If she didn't notice the construction workers and the actual pavement itself it would look like what she could imagine an extremely slow day at the park would be.
Unfortunately, she did notice the construction workers wearing brightly colored vests walking around and heaving large broken slabs of concrete into their arms. Her lips pursed as she caught a glimpse of someone walking down Main Street without a bright vest on, someone dressed in dark clothes.
As they came further into her view she noticed that the man held a leash around one of his wrists with her dog Roscoe attached to the other end. She gazed in confusion as she watched them walk around, Dimitri was supposed to be going back to the mainland with everyone else. Why was he here?
As she began to question even further what the hell Dimitri was doing with her dog her phone began to vibrate wildly on the table. The caller was unidentifiable but it was clear who it was. Her father perched a questioning brow up at her as she took her phone in her hands. "I've got to go." She quickly informed him, with an apologetic tone to her voice. "Can you pick up the bill for me? I'll pay you later."
"It's weird that you offered to take everyone to lunch and you're sticking me with the bill."
"Please?"
Alan could tell that his daughter seemed to be distressed and confused at the same time. Now he wondered who had called her to make her act like this. Perhaps Owen? "Kids." He huffed out to Lex, with an unpleased sigh he sat up from the booth to let her out. "Nice meeting you!" Emma called out to Lex with a small wave, earning a thank you from her before ditching the scene of Margaritaville and entering the sunlight and loud construction noises.
She swiveled her body to the right to see Dimitri with Roscoe's leash wrapped around his hand and in his other hand was a black phone pressed up against his ear. She rolled her eyes at the sight of him. "Hey!" She called over to him over the loudness of the construction.
She marched over towards him, watching Roscoe pull on his leash towards her as Dimitri still had the phone pressed up to his ear. "Hey!" She beckoned again, snapping her fingers to draw his attention to her as she marched closer to him. As he made eye contact with her he dropped his phone down to his side, a smirk appearing on his lips. "Hey I was just leaving you a message-"
"Okay. One, how did you get my number. Two, how did you get my hotel key to get Roscoe. And three, why are you still here?" She interrupted her bodyguard, or former bodyguard, and peeled the leash from around his wrist off onto hers.
"Claire, Claire, and Elon." He listed off, pointing each finger up as he rolled off their names. Emma was even more confused now. Why would Claire let him have that information? And why was he here?
"That explained some of it but why are you here? Is Myra here?" She questioned further. Dimitri shook his head, his lips pursed into a thin line as he placed a set of sunglasses on the bridge of his nose. "No, Elon wanted to extend my mission. I'm here until the trial ends."
Emma nodded her head as she took in the new information. She wasn't in immediate danger like before but she could be vulnerable for an attack still. Who knows what InGen has up their sleeves.
She began to walk down Main Street towards the Mosasaur exhibit. Perhaps seeing the waves in the paddock would calm her down. They walked in a comfortable silence, the past day Myra would usually accompany them as she tried to go over her speech. Now without the tedious speech repetition they could finally be comfortable with each other's presence.
"So you're gonna be here for a while then?" Emma questioned Dimitri finally breaking the silence although it was nice. If he was spending a lot of time with her she might as well get to know him. Dimitri nodded in response. "Until the verdict of the trial happens. I thought we just established that?" He teased in response.
"So that's three weeks for him to get the written notice of him being sued, two weeks for him to prepare for the trial, a day for the actual trial that I won't be present at-"
"Elon begs to differ about that."
"I said a trial I won't be present at." Emma repeated in an irritated tone glaring at him which he returned as a challenge. "Fine." He said shortly after he broke the staring contest. "A couple days after that for the verdict to be determined. So that gives you about a couple of months in paradise." Emma calculated just as she reached the edge of the exhibit.
She could feel the light mist on her face from the waves within the paddock, it felt refreshing. Then she remembered what was in the paddock and stepped back immediately, pressing her arm against the broad of Dimitri's chest and pushing him back as well.
Ever since she saw Mo take down the Indominous just by leaping out of the water she had been weary of her ever since. "If you call being stuck on an island filled with paradise fine. Sure. It's paradise." Dimitri sassed as he saw the crest of a scaled tail flip out of the water for a split second, forcing Emma to jump in surprise. Even he felt uneasy being around Mo.
It pleased Emma to see how unsettled he was. He wasn't so brave after all. "Let me show you someone else. Someone less scary." She suggested with a slight smile playing on her lips as she watched the worry grown in Dimitri's eyes.
As they approached the large entrance Dimitri felt cold as he gazed at the large pillars holding up the sign. Tyrannosaur Kingdom. He felt even more uneasy about going into the small hallway instead of standing out in the open by the Mosasaur tank. He could run out in the open, he'd be trapped if anything went wrong in there.
Emma seemed fearless of the creature laying behind the thick stone walls of the paddock, not even hesitating as she crossed the threshold of the entrance. "No," Dimitri protested. "No way, I'm not going in there."
He quickly lunged forward and latched on to the leash, halting Roscoe and pulling Emma back out into the sunlit street. She quickly released her hand from the leash, rubbing at her wrist from the burning sensation the tightness had caused her. "Are you seriously being a baby about this?"
"No, Satan, I'm just being sensible about this. There's a thing in their that's only instinct is to literally kill anything that moves."
She rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms against her chest. Some brave bodyguard. "Listen, I'm going to go see Rexie. I've been wanting to see how she's recovered." She crossed over to him, jabbing her pointer finger into his chest. "You can stay out here if you want and keep an eye on Roscoe." She instructed with a glare, earning one from him in return. He broke yet again one of their stare offs with an eye roll. "Sounds perfect." He said in agitation.
Emma turned towards the entrance with a scoff, brushing off the encounter that she had. "Be back in ten minutes or else!" He called back towards her. She suppressed the urge to roll her eyes again as she listened to his command. She hated being treated like a baby. "Okay, dad," She jeered in reply without turning around to even acknowledge him. Nothing was going to happen to her while she checked up on Rexie.
She crossed into the small tunnel that guests would enter, becoming completely engulfed by the darkness and the cool air conditioning. It was more refreshing within the tunnel than it was outside where it was constantly muggy. She trudged up the incline to where the tunnel suddenly became lighter from the large windows that filled the viewing section for the tyrannosaur.
She sat on one of the edges of the windows to comfort herself within Rexie's presence. Although seeing the large sauropod was comforting she was recently chilled from Lex's stories. The vibrations from the creatures footsteps rumbled underneath her. Rexie's skin was tattered with even more scars.
Her heart clenched as she remembered the fight Rexie had with the Diablous vividly. She absentmindedly stood up as she watched Rexie walk to the other end of the paddock to investigate a new smell it seemed like, or perhaps some left over meat from her meal. Emma narrowed her eyes down to what the tyrannosaur was sniffing at.
She could barely make it out with how small it was but she gasped when she realized what it was. A black hat engraved with a white InGen insignia. Worry pulsed through her veins along with panic. She was alone and they were present. Her heart leapt up to her throat as she heard footsteps coming from behind her.
She twirled around to see was standing behind her, ready to run or possibly attack whoever was in the tunnel with her. She gasped as she caught sight of Owen who seemed to stop in his tracks as she spotted him. Her body relaxed instantly, relief flowing throughout her head.
He was dressed in the same suit he wore at the press conference, giving him a strong and intelligent aura. She began to sweat a bit under his gaze. There were so many things she wanted to say, to apologize for.
"Hey." He greeted her softly. "Hey." She mimicked his greeting in the same tone. She held his endearing gaze as long as she could, she felt the same butterflies in her stomach as she did when they were first dating. He looked handsome in his blazer and dress pants.
She suddenly felt the awkward need to say something instead of just gawking in her head on how good he looked. "What are you doing here?" She asked, interrupting the silence. He cleared his throat as he thought of a good response, throwing his thumb back towards the entrance of the tunnel. "I saw Roscoe with a stranger."
Emma let out a small laugh as she thought of the scenario that he had gone through. Of course he'd be intrigued to know why some strange man that looked like he could kill a person was holding on to his dog.
"No that's just Dimitri, Apex set him up to be my bodyguard until the trial. He's too afraid to come in here. Some bodyguard." She explained sheepishly, scratching the back of her head as Owen let out a small chuckle of realization.
He stuffed his hands into his pockets as he smiled at her causing her to blush. For a moment it was hard for her to think or make sense of anything, all she wanted to do was fall into that smile but she forced herself to come to reality. "Thank you for being there. I don't know if Claire forced you to be there-"
"No. No. Claire? Forcing me to do something? I wanted to be there for you, Em." He chuckled out, causing her to smile. "You think I'd let you do something like that on your own?"
She shook her head, it was refreshing to talk to him without being mad or upset. The next girl to have him was bound to be lucky. She wanted him to have a relationship with Ella. She snapped out of her dreamy thoughts about Owen, her fantasies of them being together had to stop. She cleared her throat to clear her mind. "I'm actually glad you're here. I wanted apologize to you about what happened a few days ago. It was immature of me."
"Don't worry about it, Em." He responded, placing a hand on her cheek, immediately warranting a blush from her that made him smirk. "I was immature too. I shouldn't have yelled like that." She felt as if her knees could buckle at any time.
He was sending her back to the beginning of when they were first dating, back to when every touch of his was electric and she just wanted more. She took herself away from that even though she wanted it even more now. It was frustrated at how much she wanted things to go back to normal but they couldn't.
"What're you really doing here?" She questioned, her voice sounding hoarse and cracking from the depressed emotions. Owen grunted in response, stepping back so she could see him. A pang of depression erupted inside of her as she watched him distance himself from her.
She held up a questioning brow as she watched him place his hand into his blazer jacket looking around for something. He pulled out his hand which clutched on to something. "Emma, I still love you." The words that spilled out of his mouth hit her ears like beautiful music. It made her tear up a bit as she thought of how generous he was being to still love her after what she had put him through. "Owen..."
"I still want to be with you, now more than ever. I need you to know this." He announced catching her slightly off guard. She was sure he was the one who wanted to break up, especially after her actions with telling Claire about Isla Rebelde. Even though he forgave her, she couldn't forgive herself for her outburst. She didn't mean gasp in surprise as she watched him place himself on one knee and opened his hand to reveal a small box. "What are you-"
"Emma, I know asked you at a bad time last time but I think now is the perfect time. Will you marry me?"
