Luke was sat in the staffroom. It was his first day back after the news that his mum was terminally ill and she was moving back to Australia. Adam came in.
"I've had enough." He said.
"Of what?" Luke asked.
"Jordan."
"Haven't we all."
"I'm resining Luke."
"You're doing what?" Luke said almost spitting his tea back out.
"Resining. It's clear that he was doesn't want me to be here. It's made it clear he doesn't want me to be around and I'm not waiting to be pushed out."
"Don't you think it's a bit of an overreaction." Luke told him.
"Not at all. Maybe if I go, it will inspire him to do the same thing." He said as he poured the kettle.
"What do you mean?" Luke asked.
"He's hiding something Luke. I don't know what it is but he is hiding him something. Whatever he is trying to hid will come out eventually and I reckon he should quit whilst he is ahead and if he cares about this place as much as he says he does, he'll do it." Adam said.
"You know really do know something, don't you?" Luke said.
"I don't know what it is but I'm pretty sure its making him more of a liability than a good clinical lead at the moment."
Adam finished making his coffee and got back to work. Luke finished his tea and got back to work. As soon as he stepped out the staff room a patient was coming in.
"Steve Carter. Found in a state of collapse and complaining of a tearing pain in his back." Polly said as she pushed Steve into resus.
Diane, the lady who Steve came in with, was saying that he was screaming although Steve denied this. Steve insisted on it just beginning a muscle strain but Luke wasn't sure.
"This tearing pain, did it come on immediately?" Luke asked.
"Yeah." Steve replied.
"Ok, query thoracic aneurysm." Luke told Ruth.
Ruth nodded. Luke got the nurse to draw some blood and organise an x-ray.
"I've got to be somewhere tonight. It's pretty special." Steve told Luke.
"Steve, let the doctors do their job love." Diane told him.
"I've got a bout on. A big comeback special."
"Ok, I'm just going to have feel of your tummy." Luke said.
Steve nodded. Just then Big Mac came in and started to talk to Steve about his wrestling career and all the times that he and his mother had watched Steve wrestle when Mac was a child. Luke was still feeling Steve's stomach, he reached a point and Steve winced in pain.
"Alright, do you mind just stepping Mac." Luke asked.
"Of course." Mac said.
Diane gave Mac a program on his way out.
"Ok Steve, I'm just going to give you something to help with the pain relief."
About half an hour had passed since Steve went off for his tests. Luke was stood at a computer when saw him coming back, he followed Steve into resus.
"Show me." Luke said to Ruth.
Ruth handed him the scan results.
"So whats the damage then?" Steve asked.
Luke looked up at Steve.
"Everything is ok. Isn't it?" Diane asked.
Luke explained what had happened to Steve.
"He broke his back?" Diane asked.
"Not exactly, the CT shows that the pain your husband is showing is because of a collapsed vertebra." Ruth explained.
"That doesn't sound serious." Steve tried assure Diane.
"Well I'm afraid it is. It may mean that it's a symptom of a bigger problem." Ruth told her.
"We'll just need to do some more tests." Luke said.
"No. No. I've got a show tonight; I can't let the fans down." Steve said trying to get out of his bed.
"Forget about the fans." Diane told him.
"This thing has taken me months to organise."
"Steve! This is serious." Diane told him again.
"So is Jim Waller." Steve argued back.
"Will you shut up about Jim Waller. They are trying to tell us there is something wrong." Diane made Steve lie back down. "What are we looking at here?"
"We'd rather not speculate." Ruth said.
"But obviously you think something is wrong. We need to know the sooner the better."
"All we can do is recommend further tests."
"Further tests" Diane was annoyed.
"Prostate." Steve said randomly.
"Have you been having problems with your prostate?" Luke asked.
"I was diagnosed three months ago. My GP says there is nothing they can do."
Diane was staring at Steve.
"Nothing they can do about what?" She asked.
"Cancer."
Luke felt his stomach knot at the mention of the word.
"Didn't know how to tell you." Steve told Diane.
"Three months. Three bloody months." Diane replied.
"I didn't want to worry you."
"I'm your wife. You couldn't tell me about this. Is this what this fight is about. One last fight, your swan song."
Luke gestured at Ruth to let them have this conversation in private. They left resus. They both went and stood at the same computer to see what they could do for Steve. They both studying some results when Steve came out of resus being followed by Diane.
"You can't leave Steve." She said.
Luke went over.
"Mr Carter, I would strongly advise you against leaving." Luke said to him.
"I said I would fight tonight and I will." Steve replied.
"No way, your staying here. They can help you." Diane said trying to get him back into bed.
"There's nothing they can do."
"Wrestling is not an option you'll be lucky to make it to the car park." Luke said.
"Make me stronger. You're a doctor, give me some drugs or whatever. I need to get into that ring, this is all I've got, you know what I'm saying."
Luke and Diane led Steve back to bed. Luke left Diane and Steve alone. Mac was stood outside watching in.
"Its right for a man like that. A man of action. He deserves better. You know, something more fitting." Mac said.
"Well that's the thing about fate, you don't get to choose."
"But its still not fair is it. He should go out doing what he does best. He should go out fighting."
Mac walked away. Luke went to find Ruth.
"What does his GP say?" He asked her.
"Cancer is aggressive and advanced." She replied.
"Surgery not an option?"
"I could speak to oncology to see if they could organise some palliative radiotherapy."
Luke started to think about his mum and how she was doing.
"Hardly an appealing prospect is it." He said.
"What else is there?" Ruth said.
Luke walked away and said to himself. "He can go out fighting."
Luke walked into resus, Ruth followed.
"Right Mr Carter. It is my duty to inform you that any physical exertion in your condition would be very risky. Having said that I going to try and at least make you ready for tonight."
"What?" Diane and Ruth both said.
"Do what you have to do doctor." Steve said.
"No way, he has to stay. You have to treat him."
"That is one option but it is very limited."
Diane tried to stop Luke.
"Diane, I don't want that. I want to get to that gym."
Luke told Ruth to start putting Luke on some drugs. But she just stood there.
"Luke with all due respect he can barely make it out of bed."
"Which is why we have to work fast and let's see if we can get him some blood as well to boost your energy."
"I appreciate it." Steve smiled at Luke.
"Steve you aren't fit for this. There's no way you can go anywhere, let alone fight." Diane said.
"I won't fight. I'll just turn up and the ring, go a couple of rounds and give the fans what they want."
"Screw the bloody fans, what about me?" Diane said.
"Diane, love I need to do this." Steve assured her.
Luke was still checking Steve over to make sure that he was well enough to fight. Diane picked up her things and walked out. Steve called out after her. Luke left Steve alone for a while so the treatment would start to work.
He was stood at a computer, when Alice came up next to him.
"How are you doing?" She asked.
"Alright, yeah." He replied squeezing her hand.
"Sure?"
"Positive."
She smiled at him and left him to get on with his work.
About an hour later, Luke went back to check on Steve. Ruth was in there doing some obs.
"How are we doing?" Luke asked.
"Can feel myself getting stronger as we speak." Steve said. "Is Diane around?"
"Do you want me to go and fetch some to see if they can find her?" Luke asked.
"No. No worries. She probably needs a bit of time on her own to process everything. So do you think I'll be able to do it?"
"Yes, you're making good progress."
"It's just that time is marching on."
"Dr Stone could I have a word please?" Ruth asked.
"Yeah."
Luke and Ruth went outside.
"The chances of getting him out of here and down to that gym are slim to none." Ruth said.
"He wants us to try." Luke replied.
"But his wife clearly doesn't." Ruth argued.
"We're not treating his wife, Ruth." Luke told her.
"Luke, how can you not see this is hopeless. I don't know why your persisting with this…"
Luke cut Ruth off. "This is about dignity. This about us choosing how and where and when. If you have any sensitivity you would understand that."
"You meant him."
"Sorry?" Luke was confused.
"When you said its about us choosing you meant its about him choosing."
"Of course I did."
Luke went back into resus.
Later on, Luke had been upstairs to check on another patient, he came back down to find Steve. But he wasn't in resus. Luke went to find Ruth.
"Where's Mr Carter?" He asked her.
"He had to be taken to ITU. He arrested but we managed to save him." Ruth said not looking up from her notes.
"Why wasn't I paged."
"It was an emergency." She said.
Luke went up to ITU. He found Steve. Mac was sat in there with him.
"I hate to say it but even I think the fight is out the question." Steve said.
"I'm sorry we weren't able to help you."
"You've been top notch mate. Top notch." Steve smiled. "Would have been great to climb in the ring one last time."
Just then Diane walked in. Luke gestured to Mac to let them two talk it between themselves.
