In this Chapter...Happiness, and slight sadness!
Chapter 37: Carlos POV
I feel so useless! The only thing really keeping me going is knowing that Dak is where he belongs, Logan is providing for us, and you know, justice was served. Also, I get to be a stay at home dad, and that kind of makes me happy, because now I know that I won't miss anything in my kids lives.
I smiled as I held Evan, who was gripping my finger and letting it go. I loved watching him grow, Logan and I both. Logan still has a few more days to stay with us before he has to go back to work and he's been milking it.
"Someone learned to grab things," I smiled.
I was surprised when I got a smile back. It's the first time that my baby has smiled! I wanted to yell Logan's name, but I didn't want to startle Evan, so I just waited for him to come back.
"Anything interesting happen while I was gone," he plopped down next to me, wrapping his arms around me.
He always asked that question, but usually the answer was 'no'. I was kind of happy to have something to tell him this time.
"Actually yes," I smiled.
"Oh," he looked surprised.
"Evan smiled at me," I said.
"Really?" Logan smiled. "And I missed it?"
"Yup," I boasted.
"Let me hold him," Logan reached out for him.
I handed him to Logan, who was trying to get him to smile, but he just wouldn't do it. Logan frowned, and I laughed a little.
"He doesn't like me," Logan concluded.
"Don't be silly," I laughed. "He loves you, maybe he tired himself out doing it the first time."
Logan looked at me and gave me a really look. I just shrugged in response. Ethan, Emma, and Jade ran in, running right over to us. They must have been in the back yard playing something.
"Can Evan play wit us?" Ethan asked.
He asked that question every day. EVERY SINGLE DAY. I can't blame him though because he doesn't really understand how growing works yet.
"Not yet," I said. "He's still not big enough."
Ethan pouted.
"Play wit us papa," Emma said.
I looked at her before shrugging.
"Okay," I smiled. "What are we playing?"
"Tag. You're it!" Jade hit my leg before the three ran outside, giggling.
I looked at Logan, who only smirked.
"You'd better go catch them," he laughed.
I shook my head before running out of the back door after the kids into the yard. They screamed when they saw me. In their word, I changed from their papa, to a big scary monster, and I let them run a little, and I chased them, pretended to run out of breath, and all that other fun stuff.
Eventually, I ran after Emma, and grabbed her up, flipping her, causing her to scream and laugh. Don't worry, I was gentle, and the kids loved it. It felt kind of good to act like a kid again for a few minutes. They don't have to worry about the stresses of life yet, especially not at this age; they just get to live life right now and have fun doing it.
We were having fun and laughing in the grass when the gate that connected our house with Kendall and James' opened. Kendall and James were smiling really wide and Kendall was holding Adam.
"Logan!" James called through the door.
I looked at them confused. Why were they so happy? Logan came out just as confused as I was. They didn't say anything. Kendall just sat Adam right in front of me and then pointed at me.
"Look! Uncle Carlos!" Kendall said in an upbeat voice.
Kendall let go of his shoulders, and I smiled as Adam took not one, but three steps towards me before falling right into my lap. I looked at Logan, who was smiling just as much. Now I see why they were so happy, even though the kids were looking at us like we were crazy. They didn't really understand what was so great.
"And he's not even a year yet!" James smiled.
"That is awesome," I smiled, hugging Adam. "I'm proud of you Adam!"
Of course, he couldn't respond because he is still just an 11 month old. He can make noises and that's about it, but it's cool to know that he's starting to walk. I can't wait until Evan gets to that point, but as long as he keeps smiling at me, I'll be fine.
"Evan smiled for the first time today," Logan said.
James smiled, taking Evan from Logan's hands, trying to get him to smile.
"Has anyone talked to Camille lately?" James asked eventually.
"I talked to her a few days ago, but that's about it," I said.
"She's probably taking this hard," Logan said. "We should invite her over for dinner or something."
"Yeah, now that she's all alone with a baby, she's going to need her friends," I said.
"And how about you?" Kendall looked down at me.
"What about me?" I asked, even though I knew exactly what he was talking about.
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine," I shrugged.
"Don't lie," James said.
He stared at me and I looked back, trying not to break under his gaze.
"Okay fine," I sighed. "I'm kind of upset still, but I have the kids to keep my company. It gets bad when think about it and realize that I actually have 15 years to go until I can do the job that I learned to love."
"We're here for you," Logan smiled softly. "I'm always here if you need someone to talk to and you know that."
I nodded before standing up.
"I'm going to go call Camille," I walked inside of the house.
It turns out that Camille was way worse off that I was. She declined our offer to come over for dinner, and we all know that that is something that Camille would never do. She claimed that she was tired…hah! She's Camille the super dramatic actress, I've never seen her get tired in my life.
I had a talk with her though, letting her know that I was there for her before hanging up. I went back outside, where the kids went back to playing and the guys were still talking.
"She won't come over," I said.
'Why?" James made a face.
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe because she's in a bad spot right now!" Logan smacked the back of James' head.
"Ow!" James glared at him.
"I have an idea," Kendall said. "Let's go to her house and surprise her!"
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" I asked. "She didn't seem to want to be bothered."
"Once we get to her, she'll be her old Camille acting self," Kendall said. "We can make a dinner and then go over there and stay with her and Layla for a few hours."
"Kendall knows best," Logan shook his head with a smile.
"So, that's a yes?" he asked.
"We're in," we all shrugged.
TIME SKIP
A few hours later, we had made a yummy spaghetti dinner and packed the kids into the car, heading over to Camille's apartment. When we got there, I knocked on the door, and a few seconds she opened it, surprised to see us. She looked like she had been crying.
"What are you guys doing here?" She asked.
I didn't say anything, I just pulled her into a hug. She melted into the hug, hugging me back. I wasn't surprised when Kendall, James, and Logan joined in on the hug. Just for effect, the kids mimicked us and hugged around our legs.
"It'll be okay," I whispered.
I heard her give a tearful laugh before we all pulled away.
"We refused to let you be all alone and you aren't going to shut us out," Kendall said sternly.
"So, we made some dinner and came over to surprise you," James smiled.
"You guys," she shook her head, smiling.
"You love us," I stuck my tongue out.
"I do," she agreed. "You guys are always there for me."
"Because you're like our little sister that we have to protect," Logan smiled. "Now let's go eat."
She nodded with a big smile and we went off to have a nice family dinner because as long as we stick together, no one can stop us.
