Chapter 36: Where Do We Go?
"I hate being stuck in this bed," Kyle whined. Miles, Lilly, Leora, Caleb, and Lucas were sitting around his bed. They were all catching Kyle up on things he had missed over the three weeks since the bombing.
"You'll be out next week," Lilly said.
"Not soon enough, I'm going crazy here," Kyle said.
"Oh don't be a drama queen," Leora said playfully.
"Normally I'd be offended that you implied I'm a girl, but I've kind missed you harassing me Le," Kyle said.
"Glad to be of service," Leora said with a smirk.
"You weren't kidding when you said they were an odd pair," Lucas said.
"I know, but they're not that bad once you really get to know them," Miles said, "after awhile you kind of tune it out,"
"Did we tell you that the kid who went berserk was Cooper's brother," Miles asked.
"Well half brother, but then again none of this siblings are full siblings," Leora said.
"Really? I suppose it makes sense, he had like ten kids right?" Kyle asked.
"Possibly more," Leora said nodding her head.
The group fell silent as they thought over the events of the last few weeks. Things had been hectic and they were slowly returning to normal. Well, as close to normal as it could get with everyone still on edge. They were trying to move on, but it wasn't that easy when they had so many reminders.
"Oh, Miles invited Rion over so dad and Papi, well Papi gets to meet her finally," Lilly said changing the topic.
"Nice, you meeting her parents too?" Kyle asked with a grin.
"Yeah they're coming over too along with Fran," Miles said.
"Fran?" Kyle asked confused.
"Her sister," Miles said.
"Oh right, I remember you mentioning her," Kyle said nodding her head.
"Is that why I was invited to dinner tonight?" Lucas asked nudging Miles lightly.
"Yeah, you're family too," Miles said looking over at his brother.
"She's knows about me?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah, I've told her everything as it was happening, she was someone I could talk to and not be judged," Miles said.
-Aftermath-
Kendall sighed as he rocked Jenny in his arms. She was being fussy and was rubbing her eyes like crazy. Kendall could tell she was tired, but she was fighting sleep. Kendall was walking back and forth in the nursery, trying to get her to sleep, but she was resisting him every step of the way.
James was downstairs doing something. He had been moody ever since their fight last week. Kendall wasn't even sure what the fight was about. James had just gone off on him for no reason and left. Kendall wasn't even sure he could call it a fight.
Over the last week Kendall tried to talk to James, but he'd brush him off. He wasn't sure what had gotten into his husband lately. James was acting a bit colder towards him and he was hardly talking to anyone. He took care of the girls during the day and made dinner for the kids and went to bed. No one really spoke to him much as he kept his replies short and simple.
"Dad."
Kendall turned and looked to the doorway. Adam was standing there with a sleeping Miri. He walked into the room and laid her down.
"What's up Adam?" Kendall asked.
"Is everything ok with you and Pops? I don't mean to pry by he just seems...I'm sorry it's none of my business," Adam said shaking his head. He laid Miri down in her crib. He turned to leave.
"We just had a disagreement, nothing to worry about," Kendall said. "How are you feeling though," he asked.
"Ok I guess, Cooper's here, I'll be in my room and before you assume anything, were just gonna talk," Adam said. He walked from the room without saying another word.
Kendall sighed and shook his head. Things were still tense around the house. Adam had grown distant ever since he lost the baby, the only person he talked to was Cooper. Kyle was still in the hospital, but he was getting better everyday. If things kept up he would be home by next week and back in school soon.
Jenny finally fell asleep and Kendall was able to lay her down in her crib. He too. Her toys from her crib and set them aside. He left the room and headed down stairs. He found James in the living room cleaning. He stopped and watched him move about the room.
"Can I help you?" James asked glancing over his shoulder.
"So you can talk to me," Kendall said.
"Don't start this now," James sighed.
"You started this when you wouldn't talk to me," Kendall replied crossing his arms over his chest.
"You don't make it easy sometimes," James replied shaking his head.
"So now this is my fault?" Kendall asked.
"I didn't say that," James said shaking his head at the blonde.
"Oh it was implied, like you always do," Kendall snapped annoyed. "It's always gotta be my fault, never yours," he added. Kendall wasn't sure why he was picking a fight with James. He didn't like fighting with the brunette, but lately it was was the only way they communicated.
"Oh knock it off," James said.
"Fine whatever, you're always right and I'm always in the wrong," Kendall muttered. He turned and left the living room.
"Kendall," James called after him. Kendall just brushed him off and headed upstairs to their bedroom. He shut the door locking it behind him. He walked over to the bed trying to fight the tears. He heard James calling to him on the other side of the door.
-Aftermath-
Miles moved about the dinging room. He wanted to make sure that everything was perfect for tonight. Rion and her family was coming over for dinner. It was their attempt at doing something normal. Carlos and Logan were making chicken cordon bleu for dinner. Miles was nervous that something would go wrong.
"Relax everything will be fine," Lilly said.
"You say that because it's not your boyfriend coming to dinner," Miles snapped.
"Does he always freak out like this?" Lucas asked.
"Oh yeah, especially when he's nervous," Lilly sad with a smirk.
"Guys please, I really like Rion and I want this to be perfect. I want her parents to like me," Miles said.
"Yes best behavior all of you," Logan said looking at his children. They all gave him a smile, expect for Miles who was still freaking out over tonight.
Miles and Layla set the table when the doorbell rang. Miles nearly jumped out of his skin. He ran from the room leaving his siblings laughing at his behavior. Miles stopped before he reached the door. He calmed himself down and took a deep breath. He answered the door with a smile. Rion was on the other side with Fran and her parents.
"Hi you must be Rion," Carlos said walking up behind Miles. He pulled him aside and let the Payne's in.
Logan, Lilly, Layla, and Lucas all walked out to greet Rion and her family. Miles learned that Rion's parents names were Greg and Catharine. Once introductions were made everyone headed to the dining room.
They all sat around the table talking. Logan and Carlos talked to Greg and Catharine getting to know them a bit. Lilly and Layla talked with Fran. She took a liking to them faster than she did Miles. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Miles had hurt Rion already, but he wasn't going to do that again.
"So you're Miles twin brother right?" Rion asked Lucas.
"Yeah, took us sixteen years to figure it out though," Lucas joked with a smile.
"Yeah, if we hadn't both looked into things we never would've found out," Miles said.
"So what exactly happened, Miles told me his story what's yours? If you don't mind my asking," Rion said interestedly.
"Well, did Miles tell you we were born joined at the hip?" Lucas asked. Rion nodded her head.
Lucas told her about him being brought up to San Francisco. He told her his story and how he figured out he was from L.A. and not San Francisco. About convincing his parents to move so he could at least find the truth. Lucas then met detective Vance and found the Mitchell's.
"Wow, so it was by pure luck that you both started looking for the truth at the same time," Fran asked having jumped in listening to Lucas' story. Greg and Catharine had taken an interest too.
"Dumb luck," Miles said with a smile. "I was going through my moms things when I came across a birth certificate that wasn't mine. It was missing a few things and I just started looking," Miles said.
"I was never lied to about being adopted. I just got curious and wanted to know where I came from and who would leave a disabled child alone at a fire house," Lucas said.
"Disabled?" Catharine asked confused.
"Miles and I were born conjoined at the hip, we shared a leg," Lucas said, "I was the unlucky one and lost a leg," he said.
"At least a caring family found you," Miles said.
Dinner continued with light conversation and everyone seemed to be getting along. Once dessert was served Miles looked at Rion. She was smiling.
"This turned out better than I thought it would," Miles said.
"Yeah, it thought it would be awkward, but it's not," Rion said
"Me too," Miles admitted.
Once everything was said and done, Miles was pleased with how the night turned out. He walked Rion to the door behind her parents and Fran. Fran led them out shooting the couple a wink. Miles grinned and quickly thanked Rion for coming over and putting up with his family. He gave her a quick good bye kiss and she left. Miles fell back against the door with a smile.
"She's nice," Carlos said. Miles looked up at Carlos and Logan who were standing at the end of the hallway.
"She is," Miles said dreamily.
"He's got it bad," Lucas said with a laugh. Lilly and Layla were behind him snickering. Miles just glared at his siblings.
"Lay off you three, let him have this moment," Logan said looking at his other three children.
"Yeah, you'll he in his position one day and how do you want him to treat you," Carlos said. The other three stopped and looked at one another and then to Miles.
"I just want to thank you guys for making this night perfect," Miles said.
-Aftermath-
"Do I have to?" Jake asked as he nervously gripped the steering wheel.
He was sitting in his car with Damien beside him. They were parked outside his parents house.
"Yes you have to tell your dads we are engaged, I mean if we show up married one day they'll get mad they weren't informed," Damien said crossing his arms over his chest.
Jake sighed and hung his head. He knew Damien was right. He didn't want his dads to lecture him. They'd most likely tell him he was rushing into this and he'd regret it. He wanted them to ha happy for him, but they wouldn't be. His dads were always telling him and his siblings not to rush into things. They didn't want them making the same mistakes they made.
"Come on Jake," Damien said reaching over and placing his hand on Jake's shoulder. Jake sighed and hung his head for a moment gathering the courage to get out of the car.
He got out of the car and Damien followed him. They walked up to the house and Jake stopped at the door. He bit his lip. Damien stopped at his side. Jake looked at him pleadingly. He didn't want to do this yet. Kyle wasn't even home from the hospital yet.
The door opened to reveal Leora. She stood in the doorway with her arms crossed.
"You know we can see the driveway from the living room," Leora said.
"I know," Jake said giving her a weak smile. "are dad and pops home?" he asked.
"Yeah, we've been waiting like a half hour for you to come in," Leora said with a smirk. She stepped aside for her brother. Jake stepped in but turned around and ran into Damien
"You're doing this Jake," Damien said firmly.
"How can you not be scared?" Jake asked looking at Damien.
"I am, but this is something we have to do," Damien said.
"Whoa, you're not pregnant are you?" Leora asked looking at Jake shocked.
"What?!" Jake exclaimed his voice rising an octave. "No, no, no," he said quickly shaking his head. He had had the scare a while back and he had been careful ever since. He was taking every precaution he could.
"Sorry, but you're freaking out for some reason and you want to talk to dad and pops...oh my god," Leora said. She spotted the reason Jake was hear. Jake closed his fist and covered his left hand with his other hand.
"Where are dad and pops," Jake asked.
"Living room," Leora said. Jake and Damien walked past her. Leora followed them.
Shake walked into the living room. Adam was sitting on the floor with Cooper and Miri. They were playing with her. Kendall and James were sitting on the couch together. Jake noticed they weren't sitting as close together as usual. Adam had told him they had been arguing lately and he could tell.
"About time," Kendall said.
"Let us see," James said as they stood up. They walked over to Jake and Damien smiling.
"Adam," Damien said annoyed.
"Hey you trusted me with a secret," Adam said looking up at Damien who only rolled his eyes.
"You told Adam?" Jake asked.
"Who do you think helped him take all those pictures," Adam asked looking up at his brother with a smile. He picked up Miri and walked over to Jake. "Watch this, blow kisses Miri," he said getting her attention. He smacked his lips and Miri mimicked him.
"Oh that's so cute," Jake said holding his hands out to Miri. She reached over to Jake with a smile. Adam handed her over and looked at Damien.
"I suppose this make you uncle Day now huh?" Adam asked.
"I guess so," Damien replied with a smile.
"You still haven't shown us," Kendall said getting Jakes attention. Jake held his hand up and Kendall and James smiled.
"Is this what you want Jake?" James asked, "this isn't something to take lightly. You can't just stop being married once you are," he said.
"I know pops, Damien and I have talked this over several times during the last week and it's what we want," Jake said.
"I can't say were thrilled about this," Kendall admitted.
"I didn't expect you guys to be too happy with this," Jake admitted, "I mean we sat in the car for a half hour. I was so scared to even come in," he admitted shifting Miri in his arms.
"Which is why we let you sit there, you'd come tell us when you were ready," James said.
"I'd really appreciate your approval, but approval or not, I am going to marry Damien this summer," Jake said.
"Summer?" Leora asked.
"So soon?" Kendall asked.
"We talked it over and agreed this summer would be best," Jake said nodding his head.
Kendall and James were both speechless.
"I get to be in the wedding right, I can help Miri be the flower girl," Leora said quickly.
"I'll be your best man, right?" Adam asked Damien.
"I don't know if I should be offended that you pick him over me," Jake said.
"Day's got one best friend and you have two brothers do the math," Adam said turning to his brother.
"This coming summer?" Kendall asked.
"Yes dad, we've already talked to Damien's parents and they are on board. Like I said were getting married with or without your approval," Jake said.
"I know, but so soon?" Kendall asked.
"I agree, if you really love each other you can wait," James said nodding his head.
"Why wait?" Jake countered.
Kendall and James shared a look before sighing. They knew Jake could be stubborn when he wanted. It was something they both hated and admired about their son.
"Your an adult now Jake, you can make your own decisions," James said finally.
"We'll help you anyway we can," Kendall sighed.
-Aftermath-
Adam felt empty. He had nothing left anymore. He had lost his baby and it was all he fault. He had worked himself up and stressed himself out to the max worrying about Kyle and trying to forget the bombing.
Sure Adam had out on a smile for Jake and Damien. He was happy for them, but it was hard to be happy when all he wanted to do was close in on himself and disappear.
"Addie," Cooper said as he walked into Adam's bedroom with a glass of water. He handed it to Adam. Adam took the glass and took a sip before setting it on his bedside table. Cooper sat down next to Adam and took him into his arms. It was late and Cooper had to get going soon. Adam wanted to take advantage of the time they had together.
"Is it crazy that I kind of started to wanted the baby?" Adam asked softly. He turned his head to the side and rested his head on Cooper's chest.
"No it's not, after you get over the shock of being pregnant you think about the baby. I mean you were terrified of Miri at first and then you could wait to meet her," Cooper said as he tightened his hold on Adam.
"Yeah, but now I'll never get a chance to meet this baby, and it's all because of me," Adam said.
"It's not your fault," Cooper said shaking his head.
"Yes it is," Adam snapped. "I stressed out and I had a miscarriage. Bad shit just seems to be attracted to me right now," Adam said pointing to his ear. He was still having problems with it.
"Ok Addie, you're upset I get it, but these things happen. I know it sucks, but we weren't ready for another kid," Cooper said.
"I know, but I was ready to go through it all over again," Adam said.
"Things happen for a reason and even if we can't see it doesn't mean there isn't a reason," Cooper said.
"Where do we go from here?" Adam asked.
"I'm not sure," Cooper admitted. The two lapsed into a tense silence. Cooper was the one to break it. "I was thinking of going to visit Casey," he said slowly.
"Are you nuts? He almost killed us," Adam said sitting up and staring at Cooper like he had suddenly sprouted another head.
"I know, but he was under a lot of stress and technically he is my brother," Cooper said.
"Yeah, but he's like psycho," Adam said throwing his arms up in the air.
"You don't know that. He had a bad day and just made the wrong choice," Cooper snapped.
"He killed ten people Coop," Adam countered.
"I know and I'm not making excuses for him, but I'd like to meet him and maybe the nine other kids my dad had," Cooper said slowly.
"If this is about meeting your siblings just meet them, but Casey, he dug his hole and now he's gotta lie in it," Adam said shaking his head.
"This is my decision Adam, not yours," Cooper said as he stood up. He grabbed his jacket.
"Coop," Adam said softly.
"I should get going, I'll see you tomorrow," Cooper said. He slipped his jacket on and left without a word.
Adam sat there wondering where things had gone wrong. They had been confronting one another and then Cooper brought up Casey. Adam didn't understand why Cooper would want to meet the kid that almost killed them. Adam sighed and hung his head fighting back the tears.
The bedroom door opened and Cooper walked back into the bedroom. He but his lip. Adam jumped up and ran into his arms. Cooper wrapped his arms around Adam and pressed his face into his neck.
"I hate fighting with you," Cooper said.
"Me too, I'm sorry, it's your choice, you can't expect me to understand and like it, but it's your choice" Adam said.
"It's ok to disagree Adam, we are two different people," Cooer said softly. "We are going to disagree from time to time," he said. Adam lifted his head and looked into Cooper's eyes. They locked eyes. Adam leaned in and pressed his lips to Cooper's in a slow passion filled kiss.
Adam pushed Cooper backwards into his bedroom door. He turned the lock and started tugging Cooper over to the bed. He pushed Cooper down and climbed into his lap. Adam settled himself in his lap as he continued to attack Cooper's lips in a sloppy filthy kiss that was all tongue and teeth. In the back of his mind, Adam had a nagging feeling that he should stop, but he couldn't bring himself t actually stop. Cooper didn't seem to be protesting either.
Adam pulled Cooper's shirt off and pushed Cooper down onto the bed. He licked his lips as he looked down at Cooper. It had been far too long since they had had sex. Adam was sure this was a bad idea, but he was too far gone to care. Cooper was in the same boat as him as he pulled him down into another kiss.
Soon Adam had Cooper stripped and he was down to his boxers. Adam was stroking Cooper as he kissed down his chest. Cooper was a panting writhing mess. He kept urging Adam on wanting more. Adam wasn't one to deny Cooper.
"Addie please," Cooper whined as Adam nipped playfully at his hip. Adam grinned knowing what Cooper wanted. Cooper rolled his hips trying to get his point across. Adam grinned and kissed the tip. Cooper gasped. Adam opened his mouth and started to bob his head. He heard muffled moans coming from Cooper. He glanced up and saw he had a hand over his mouth. Adam felt a surge of pride at the fact that he could make Cooper lose control like this. Adam's hand came to fondle his balls and Cooper moaned. Adam pulled off Cooper and sat back as he stroked him. Adam looked down at Cooper.
There was one thing he and Cooper had never done. He had never topped. It wasn't that Adam didn't want to, but he loved having Cooper inside him. It made him feel whole. Also, Adam wasn't sure if Cooper ever wanted to bottom. He didn't want to pressure Cooper, when he was happy with the way things were. He looked up at Cooper who was looking at him.
"Go ahead," Cooper said.
That was what Adam loved about Cooper. He knew what Adam was thinking without having to ask. Adam moved so he was closed to Cooper. He stopped everything he was doing. He hadn't expected this from Cooper.
"Are you sure?" Adam asked.
"Yeah, it's you, I'm always sure," Copper said sitting up. He pulled Adam into a slow reassuring kiss. Adam felt the love and trust radiating off Cooper. It gave him a boost of confidence. Cooper parted their lips and pulled back enough to look into Adam's eyes. Adam saw the trust there. Adam knew this was a big step for Cooper since he had never bottomed. Adam was only Cooper's second sexual partner. Cooper's previous relationship had heed physical and Cooper hadn't felt as connected to them as he did to Adam. Adam was honored that Cooper trusted him.
"I love you Cooper," Adam said softly.
"I love you too," Copper replied lovingly.
-Aftermath-
Kendall sighed and he rolled onto his back. He was wide awake and and his mind was racing. He wanted nothing more than to go to sleep. He was thinking about the days events. From his fight with James to Jake and Damien announcing their engagement.
"Kendall?"
Kendall laid there staring at the ceiling. He wasn't sure if he should respond to James yet. He wasn't sure if it was time to make up yet.
"Are you awake?"
"Yeah," Kendall sighed, "I can't sleep, I'm still thinking about Jake," he said. It wasn't a complete lie. He just didn't want to argue with James again.
"Should we let him do this? He's only nineteen," James said slowly.
"That's the thing James, he is nineteen and he's an adult. He can make his own decisions and there's nothing we can do about it," Kendall said.
The two lapsed into silence once more for a bit. "At least it's Damien and no that Evan kid," Kendall said.
"That is true, it could've been someone worse," James agreed. "If I had to pick sons-in-law it'd be Damien and Cooper. Side they're not perfect but they make the boys happy," he said.
"How long before we welcome Cooper to the family?" Kendall asked.
"Sometime within the next year," James replied quickly. Kendall chuckled and shook his head. He didn't want to admit it, but James was right. With the way Adam and Cooper were going they'd have two weddings within the next year.
"I'm sorry," Kendall said turning and looking at his husband. James rolled into his side as well.
"No Ken you have nothing to be sorry about this was all my fault," James said, "I never should've shut you out like that," he said.
"I shut you out too," Kendall said, "I've been avoiding telling you that I have to go to the boys first few tour stops this spring," he said.
"I figured as much, they are your band and you want to be there with them. Maybe I can get the guys into the studio to record their vocals. Carlos is on break from his show and Logan, well he can take some time off," James said.
"You're ok with this?" Kendall asked.
"Some time apart is good once in awhile Kendall," James replied.
Kendall nodded his head and rolled onto his back. He held his arms open for James. For the first time in a week James settled into his arms. They hadn't worked through everything, but it was a start. Maybe some time apart would do them some good.
So there ya go, chapter 36. I am sorry for the long wait but I've been so busy with life and my new job. I haven't time to write much. I will try to update more regularly, but you know how I am. I am also going to try and chronicle my progress on this fic on twitter with the #AftermathFic so if you want to talk about this fic there and I'll see it.
So lots happened here. Kyle is awake and getting better. Miles finally met Rion's parents and vice versa. I've had that planned for so long now. Adam and Cooper lost the baby, will they be able to move on from this? Kendall and James seem to ha having some problems. Will they be able to fix them? Jake and Dalien have some wedding plans already made. Will things work out like they want them to?
Always
