Eddy woke to one of his least favorite sensations: a cold bed. A cold bed meant Lee had not only gotten up before him, but she'd gotten up way before him, and thus would probably not be amenable to the idea of coming back to bed. Eddy sat up and blinked a few times before realizing that, no, his eyes weren't still closed, it was just dark.

The only thing Eddy liked less than waking up to a cold bed was waking up to a cold bed in the middle of the night.

His lesser-used logical side insisted this could only mean trouble and that he should roll over and go back to sleep while he still had the chance, and maybe this would all blow over by morning. His well-hidden "softer" side, however, insisted that he should probably go find Lee, and so Eddy was up and out of bed before logical thinking could make much more of an argument.

Their apartment was small—there was a bedroom and a bathroom, and the rest of the space was taken up by the living area and the kitchen, the two of which were separated only by a half-wall. It was therefore, not much of a challenge to locate the tall woman with the shock of auburn curls slouching at the small dining table. Eddy paused and watched for a moment, wary of walking in when he wasn't wanted, but the only thing Lee appeared to be doing was leaning heavily on the table. For all he knew, she was asleep there.

Eddy approached carefully. "Lee?"

"Huh?" Not asleep, then.

"What're you doin' out here? It's two in the goddamn morning."

Lee shrugged. "Couldn't sleep."

Oh boy. Eddy pulled out a chair and sat down opposite Lee. "What's up?" He asked without preamble.

Lee didn't answer, but Eddy did finally see why she had been hunched over the table; her broad hand was spread out on the tabletop and she appeared to be studying the very modest ring adorning her finger. A stab of uncertainty hit Eddy in the gut. "Is… everything okay?"

Finally, Lee looked up at him and smirked. "I ain't havin' second thoughts. Don't worry so much." She told him.

Eddy let out a breath. "The hell're you doing, then?"

"Dunno," Lee shrugged, looking back down at her hand, "Thinkin', I guess."

"About what?" Eddy did his best to stifle a yawn.

"It's stupid." Lee replied.

"So?" Eddy shrugged, "It's keepin' you up and I don't like sleeping alone."

Lee snorted. "You're a real sweet talker." She paused, "I never thought I'd be here."

"Whad'you mean?" Eddy quirked an eyebrow.

"I mean… I grew up in that crowded, shitty trailer. Never thought I'd go anywhere. And now… we got an apartment, we're gettin' married… I got you." Lee shrugged, "Never thought I'd see the day."

"Is that bad 'er something?" Eddy asked.

"No, it ain't bad. Just kinda hit me, I guess."

"Huh."

Lee looked up at Eddy again. "What's 'huh'?"

"Nothin'. 'S just not like you to be all unsure about stuff." Eddy replied airily.

"I'm not unsure 'bout anything! I was just thinkin'." Lee huffed.

"What's to think about? You happy?"

"Yeah." Lee replied without hesitation.

"Then the rest'll work out." Eddy shrugged, then stood and offered his hand to Lee, "And if you still don't think you can sleep, maybe we can think of somethin' to do in the meantime."

Lee chuckled at Eddy's exaggerated eyebrow wiggle. "Yer cute when yer being obvious." She teased, taking his hand.

"I better be." Eddy replied, wasting no time in leading his fiancée back to bed.

It was two A.M. and they were happy. The rest could work itself out.
