Christie paced up and down the corridor, up and down the rooms, up and down the control rooms, up and down up and down. She was beyond nervous. She knew that when Captain returned he was going to have Loki with him. She was petrified of seeing those eyes, of hearing that voice, of having to accept that her own love was now a monster. Coulson, Banner, Jen, Delilah and Ren saw that she was scared and tried their best to console her. "Okay, Christie I know we had our disagreements but we're obviously not going to let Loki touch you," Jen told her, sitting around the large table and fiddling with her long curly brown hair.
"I know," Christie gave her a small smile, but carried on pacing.
"Christie, this was a bad idea, we should've left it, I'm sorry," Ren gave a choked sob.
"No, I had to know," Christie dismissed her, carrying on pacing.
"Christie, stop pacing," Delilah snapped, equally as scared.
"Go to hell," Christie grumbled, getting even more stressed.
"Christie, sit down," Coulson sighed. For some reason, Christie listened to him and sat down at a chair, and then started tapping her foot up and down. There was a sudden siren blaring through the air. Christie snapped her head up and looked around.
"What happened?" she asked quickly, her stomach churning.
"They've got him," Coulson murmured. Christie felt so nauseous and clutched her stomach. Coulson got up briskly and made his way out of the room. "Stay here," he told them before walking out. Steve walked into the area with Natasha, Tony Stark and surprisingly, Thor behind him.
"THOR!" Christie exclaimed, running over to him and giving him a hug. Thor's eyes lit up and embraced her back.
"Lady Annerledes," he sighed in relief. "You're alive…"
"Yeah," Christie nodded, feeling tears well up.
"Have you seen Loki?" Thor asked her, breaking the hug and holding her shoulders.
"No," Christie said shakily. "Have you?"
"Yes. He thinks of you dead. He's broken, completely gone," Thor told her sadly, shaking his head. Christie felt the hot tears fall down her cheeks and wiped them away quickly. She looked behind Thor and saw Stark, who she had previously worked with.
"Hello," she sniffed, giving a feeble wave.
"Hello happy," Stark raised an eyebrow. Coulson walked back in with Fury.
"Christie, you should go and see him," he said quietly.
"Really?" Captain blinked. "Isn't that a risk?"
"He's on a lockdown, he can't do anything," Fury told them firmly.
"We can't put this off forever," Coulson added.
"Fine, but we'll be here for backup," Stark nodded. Christie took a shaky breath in and nodded.
"Okay, let's go," she whispered. Coulson gave her a small smile and took Christie's hand, gently leading her to the Lockdown Room where Loki was being held. The door opened and they went through, and as soon as Christie saw Loki standing inside of the large glass cage she felt faint.
"I don't know if I can do this," she muttered.
"Come on, I'm here," Coulson said quietly. Loki turned around at the sound of footsteps coming toward his cage. As soon as his eyes locked with Christie's something's shimmered and his breathing became rigid and even though something about Christie registered in his mind, he just couldn't put a finger on who she was. Christie felt her heart stop for a few seconds after locking eyes with each other but she carried on walking. Coulson stopped walking and just stood there, not wanting to get too close. Loki watched Christie get closer but for some reason still felt no recognition. Soon, Christie was practically pressed up to the glass. Loki wouldn't come any closer.
"Do I know you?" he asked quietly. Christie burst into tears…how could he not remember her? She hadn't stopped thinking about him. Something in Loki broke, it shattered, and he had no idea why but he was crying too.
"Loki, it's me, please," Christie sobbed, pressing her hand against the glass. Loki shook his head.
"I don't know who you are," he whispered, sounding like he desperately wanted to know. This just made Christie sob harder. Coulson frowned from where he stood. Something wasn't right, Loki had been cold and evil since the Avengers caught him in Germany – now he seemed softer, sadder and slightly more human. "Do you know me?" Loki tried again, his features softening as he looked into Christie's eyes. Christie couldn't even answer she was crying too much, the hot tears just spilling out of her eyes and pressed her forehead against the glass. Coulson sighed and took out his transmitter.
"Sir, I think we should open the cage," he muttered into it. Fury replied almost immediately.
"ARE YOU NUTS?!"
"Sir, I have Christie here, she's sobbing her heart out, Loki is very close to recognizing her," Coulson explained under his breath.
"We are not letting him outta there, he'll kill us all. Christie's only got a few more minutes in there anyway until Romanoff is going in there to try and get round to him," Fury said firmly. Coulson swallowed and watched Christie try and get round to Loki. Christie suddenly had a quick idea.
"WAIT. Loki, look at me," she said through the glass. Loki blinked and looked at her. Their eyes connected and automatically, Christie heard something that she had been longing to hear for weeks.
"Annerledes?" came Loki's voice through her head.
"LOKI!" Christie screamed in her mind.
"You're…alive?"
"Didn't you know? Can't you see me?" Christie asked, glanced at Loki's eyes and saw they were glassy.
"No. I'm trapped inside my own mind, it's not even me controlling myself anymore. I don't know what I'm doing and I hardly know what I'm saying. Oh how I long to see your beautiful face again…I thought you dead," Loki's voice rang through her mind, cracking slightly as he sounded like he was on the verge of tears.
"I thought the same about you," Christie told him quietly. 'Loki' however had let out a frustrated scream.
"STOP IT!" he barked out loud. Christie jumped.
"You're shouting," she told the real Loki inside her head.
"I'm sorry," Loki apologized sadly. "After we were separated I didn't see any use in my life. So I tried to end it."
"I know, I saw," Christie whispered, watching 'Loki' pace up and down, shaking his head violently, clearly trying to get the real Loki to stop connecting to Christie.
"That's why something else is using me to get what they want. I don't yet know who they are," Loki muttered.
"How do we get them to leave?" Christie asked him.
"You don't. I don't know," Loki sighed. "I could try and get my own body back but I only have limited time and control. I just need to touch you again." Christie's heart jumped. She needed to touch him too. She turned around.
"COULSON. Please open the door, please," Christie begged, nearly kneeling to her knees. Stark came rushing in.
"What's going on?" he asked Coulson.
"I can't Christie, I've tried to ask Fury and he said no," Coulson apologised sadly, genuinely looking sorry.
"Coulson it's just for a few seconds?" Christie cried, running her hands through her hair.
"It's against the order," Coulson shook his head.
"Fury told you that you're not allowed to do it, right?" Stark checked with Coulson.
"Yeah," Coulson nodded.
"But he never told me," Stark said flippantly, before slamming his hand down on the red button.
"NOW LOKI," Christie yelped in her head. She heard a white noise similar to when she tried to connect to Loki before and Loki's body began to change, shivering violently and eventually, as the glass door opened and Christie rushed in before it shut again, Loki's eyes went the emerald green they were before and Loki breathed out slowly. Christie ran into his arms and they closed over her so tight, as if he couldn't bare to let go ever again.
"My beautiful princess," he murmured into her ear. Christie hugged him just as tightly. They broke apart and Loki put his hands on her cheeks and stroked the tears away with his thumbs before leaning in and meeting Christie's soft lips with his own. The kiss was so full of passion that as irritated Coulson was with Stark he had to give a small sad smile. "I love you, Annerledes, but listen to me right now," Loki muttered, pressing her forehead against hers.
"No, no don't say it," Christie begged, her eyes pleading and his eyes sad.
"You have to kill me, you have to do it," Loki cried, the warm tears dropping onto his clothes.
"No, I won't do it," Christie shook her head. "Please, don't…no…I love you too much to just kill you…"
"I'll ruin this world, please to it," Loki said desperately.
"I'll have to find another way, I won't do this, I refuse," Christie said firmly, burying her face in Loki's shoulder. He clasped his hands around her and stroked her hair.
"I'm sorry, but this thing is coming back," Loki said quickly, now sounding scared as he slowly lost the feeling of control in his body.
"CHRISTIE GET OUTTA THERE!" Coulson suddenly shouted, seeing that Loki's hands were too close to Christie's neck and all it took was a swift movement from whatever was possessing Loki to kill Christie then and there. Stark slammed down the red button again, seeing that Loki was changing back.
"Will you stay in my head?" Christie asked him quickly.
"Of course," Loki promised. "I love you. So much."
"I love you too," Christie sobbed, as Stark ran into the cell and pulled Christie apart from Loki, dragging her out with him before the glass door shut again and whatever was possessing Loki came straight back into his body.
"I'm still here," came Loki's gentle voice in Christie's head.
"I know," Christie cried, as she cried away in Stark's strong arms. "I know."
