Week 2, day 5:
Chapter 38: Once Lightning Strikes:
By the time Neku told Ayumu everything he absently gave them a half smile "Sounds as through you have work to do, imagine what the Composer might do if he finds out."
"Who cares." stated Neku as he narrowed his eyes and shrugged, "Joshua could have spies around to do his dirty work."
The blind boy closed his eyes and touched his temple with his index fingers "He has one person for that, Neku, it's not me."
The headphone boy winced as he saw Ayumu turn to him, "I can read your thoughts, you have others to worry about."
'Why does Ayumu always have to be so weird? And what did he mean by "you have others to worry about"?' Neku hid his face behind his funnel collar as he sighed 'But he is blind after all, no qualm for that.'
Around them a flash with a booming noise pierced the air, the storm above was coming closer. Dark clouds swirled threatening to send down rain, thunder and lightning, hail or even snow.
After it quieted down, Mayu held her hands while unease filled her expression "There hasn't been a storm in Shibuya for a long time. Do you think it's because winter is almost here?" With a sigh Neku relaxed his shoulders and replied "Possibly yes, but it looks… odd."
Ayumu blinked at the sky as he noted in a mindful tone "Indeed. I sense a great strength in it, almost like it could rip me in half." he turned away and began to walk briskly "I'll get Yukiko, we might again need our valor forces united in this mission. And this time I fear something bad will happen."
In a couple seconds he was far away but in sight.
Mayu sadly sighed and took out her rods that shined dimly in the light, she paused almost like she was scared of something before she swung it and it pushed out it's hidden extensions "We have one more day of missions before the Game Master, right? I'm scared what will happen to us."
"We need to believe we can get through this." said Neku hopefully with a smile to Mayu who blushed, he pushed his headphones up to their normal place on his head before flicking away a spiky strand of hair.
They waited a long time that Neku was starting to get bored until Yukiko and Ayumu came. Neku tensed as Yukiko gave him a glare while shoving Ayumu aside, he wondered if she was already in a mood he didn't wish to know what happened. With a deep sigh he called "Ready for the mission?"
"I rather face 100 Reapers and 200 Noise," grumbled Yukiko as she halted a few feet from him, her dark gaze almost again told him he shouldn't chat with her at all "Maybe the GM, Conductor and the Composer himself. I don't care."
Suddenly a sheepish chuckle came from Ayumu as he murmured "I think it would be best to do the mission and forget about that." the pale orange haired girl gave him a scowl as she crossed her arms and bitterly muttered under her breath.
"Now then," Mayu chirped as she gave everyone uneasy glances, "Let's get to Spain Hill!"
At once they moved in trudges except Mayu who looked like she was skipping, Yukiko was behind everyone as she sent dark leers that reminded Neku the first day they met. Dark eyes as dark as her soul, the thing he noted that day. He was right in front of her when he spoke "I guess you had a hard time in Molco, did you find what Ayumu wanted?"
"Shut up!" spat Yukiko who angrily swiped and missed him.
Up ahead, Neku could hear Ayumu talking to Mayu in barely a whisper "Don't act all sappy, you are nothing. I know what you are!" He felt curious to what that meant as he listened more "I think you must be mistaken Ayumu, what are you saying?"
Ayumu let out a growl that seemed not normal for him as he spat "That persona of yours… grr."
For some reason Neku felt a bit confused, what was Ayumu implying?
That question wasn't answered as Mayu fell down while yelping "Ouch! Is this a wall?" she rubbed her head as she closed her eyes in pain. Right away Yukiko responded darkly "You would think after all these missions you could tell without being stupid."
"A player that has sense! Oh boy… Now we have a lucky and smart girl." snapped the Reaper who came from nowhere, Neku recognized him because of his dull copper eyes that he saw from the shade of the Reaper's crimson hood "And it had to be you…"
Yukiko suddenly spun around and asked in a sarcastic tone "Oh? Want me to steal your Keypin again? I'd really like to do that!" The angry Reaper let out an irritated snarl as he stalked up to her, she was short compared to him because she had to tilt her head up to look at his face "Say that again?"
Neku nervously willed her to stop and looked at her partner for help, but he blankly watched.
"You know," said Yukiko in a growl, her eyes blazed in ire as she snapped "I really am in the worst mood today, do you think I idly ought to chitchat and take your crap?"
Anger rose up in her as she screamed, "You are such a bully! Nearly choking me to death, only to have a dumb pin returned to you?" Yukiko hotly huffed as she started to circle him "I think you are such a pain for a Reaper. There exist words that have many things to say about you, which are too much to repeat. Everyone, hates, you! I, hate, you!"
While the evident part of his face twisted grimly in disgust, she shot her dark grey-gloved hand into his pocket and ripped out his Keypin. He didn't notice her swiftly push it into her pocket as she added "Go on! Send the idiotic Noise that you, a moron, made!"
That seemed to look like the last straw for him as he lunged for her and tackled her to the ground.
As her body was being crushed she used her only useable limb, she kicked him hard in the gut as he howled in pain. Quickly she rolled away and got up before darting past him.
When the Reaper recovered he called out two Noise symbols that were yellow, as they slowly flew to them, another flash and thundering boom came from the storm. Suddenly a brilliant light appeared that bathed the Noise symbols.
Yukiko had joined her three companions who all watched awestruck as another strike of lightning came. It hit the ground and scattered around them while inflicting strikes at them.
Pain sharply stung her as she gasped in pain. Mayu was trembling while Neku was shielding himself with his sleeveless arms. Ayumu had his eyes shut tightly as he slowly crouched down, his face twisted in pain as he shouted "What's going on?! This can't be…"
At his words a much brighter light came, it came from where the light surrounded the Noise symbols. As soon as it faded away, Yukiko widened her eyes in horror as two Subzero Cat Noise and two Stridentdrop Hawk Noise appeared.
The Stridentdrop Hawk Noise had very jagged pale grey brown quills with bright purple bony tabooed wings and had livid red eyes, also it had pure white talons with long hooked and ragged claws.
For some reason they were still in the Scramble Crossing, not an area for battle that happened normally. Why this happened shocked her so much that she was lost for words. The only thing that answered her was the brewing storm overhead.
Before anything happened the Noise advanced on them. The Subzero Cat Noise ran at Yukiko with it's fangs ready to bite, she quickly sidestepped from it and spun around to block its second attempt.
As it tried to slash at her exposed arms she closed her eyes and made energy go into her Cloud Veil Pin.
"Try to evade this chilly kitty!" she taunted as hazy mist came from her palms that slowly cloaked around the pure bluish white cat, the Cat Noise quickly was captured in it as it let out harsh yowls of pain. She left it there as she summoned spheres of sparks into her hand that she threw into the misty prison.
Yukiko observed the others who fought. Neku was skillfully using his Feather Bash Pin on another Subzero Cat Noise, when it began to attack him in close combat he would switch to a pin where his arm was encased in ice that he jabbed sword like at his enemy.
Many dings came when Mayu helped Neku by hitting two metal rods, one with bells, and one that was a different metal. It made a sharp pitch that hurt Yukiko's ears a bit. Mayu's eyes sparkled brightly in delight as the Noise yowled in pain and flattened it's ears.
While Ayumu was taking on the two Stridentdrop Hawk Noise alone. He warped the area and wind, sending yellow gold glowing twisters at the Noise. But they kept battering and flaying him with their ghostly white talons. He was moving sluggishly while the Hawk Noise did swift and heavy attacks.
Yukiko narrowed her eyes before she met the ground and pain came from her face pressured into the cold cement. The Cat Noise she faced seemed to have gotten out of the mist, she was amazed that it was the first to do so. Despite it being a Noise.
It bit into her arm making her scream in fury from the pain she received, luckily her other arm was able to tear it off her before flinging it away.
Strangely there was a nagging feeling in her head that she couldn't deliberate of what it was. She only felt lightheadedness for a brief second.
Again it struck but this time she had enough time to use her Blaze Fissure Pin, fiery orange flames sprouted from her fist as she punched into the Noise. It was hit squarely in the belly while fire erupted in a stellar shape scorching its exposed icy tinted fur.
Somehow it slowly fell to the ground as light began to surround it in particles, the Noise yowled like glass smashed and Yukiko watched.
Finally she used her Spark Sphere Pin again and sent every sphere of electricity at it that made it fade away, light sailed from the remainder of its body.
With a smirk she muttered darkly "Why is it cats that give me the chills?"
"Help! Yukiko!" Ayumu's plea came into her head that she spun around to see he was cowering as he lay on the ground; the Hawk Noise kept scourging his skin in graceful lashes.
For a second she did not feel like helping him, but she had to… Due to the fact without him she was dead meat if he was gone.
'Darn it!' she thought in fury as she rushed to his aid. Yukiko started up her Barb Duke Pin; thorns with small crimson rose buds encrusted her fists as she hit each Noise that threatened him.
Ayumu gave her a hopeful smile but she growled sharply making him flinch, "Pay attention! Don't let your guard down, you of all people have the best senses I ever known..." He blushed before he looked at the incoming Noise. And Yukiko felt embarrassed that she said that aloud and not in her own mind, but Ayumu could have read her thoughts.
Both of them evaded each flay of the Hawks along side each other; they stood side by side as they both used their attacks. This time she used her Barb Duke Pin again while Ayumu warped the area to his advantage.
Soon from each decisive attacks they gave, each Hawk Noise were very low to the ground as light particles began to appear from the tips of their wings. This was a good sign, Yukiko oddly felt delighted that they were obliterating these annoying Noise.
"You're doing superb Yukiko!" Ayumu's message made her narrow her eyes, his complement made her feel sick. It was only false encouragement to her.
She did a swift swing at the incoming Noise with her Barb Duke Pin again that sent the Hawk Noise flying, it hit a wall before lux replaced where it was. (Lux is the latin word for light :3)
Ayumu had already taken down the other and gave her a smile of hope that she wanted to gag for. Yukiko really did not care what Ayumu was doing, for all she cared he was not a person she wanted as a friend.
'Will she forgive me? I… Feel so much pain in my heart; it torments me so much I feel like I could die again! What is this emotion? Gah!' this psychic message from Ayumu did not sound like he was trying to talk to her, it sounded like he was talking like she wasn't even there.
She regarded it and spat "Sure, talk to me like I'm not here!" rudely she elbowed him as she ran past him blindly.
But Ayumu watched her go muddled as he shouted in disbelief "Wait! I didn't say anything to you…" he hung his head again as more pain tugged at his heart "Yukiko..."
Neku did a final blow to the Subzero Cat Noise and it became light particles.
Mayu gave him a thumbs up as she piped happily "Great job Neku, I think you are too strong for these Noise."
He blinked at her with a nod "Yeah. I guess I do feel a bit overpowered for these Noise somehow." was he getting stronger, or was the Noise getting weaker? He couldn't say what it was.
They waited until the other pact returned and faced the Reaper, Neku widened his eyes as he saw the Reaper was kneeing on one knee, as parts of his face were faded. He also noticed that his hood was torn off in the fight revealing that he had uneven wavy dark brown hair and a broad rough looking face, on his face a distinct harsh scar could be seen from his left brow that snaked down to his right cheek.
Neku noted that it might have been there before he died.
The dark brown haired Reaper grimaced at them through a glower "Stop gawking!" he instantly pressed his hands to his face as he screamed "Just get out of my sight!" he reached into his pocket but when his hand came out nothing was in it "My Keypin!"
Right away everyone looked at Yukiko as a clicking sound came, she was already running out of sight in blinding speed when the Reaper let out a scream that a truly angst-ridden person would make "Not again! Get back here!"
Neku felt a cue suddenly; he spun around and ran after Yukiko yelling, "Run!"
Déjà vu hit him as he recalled they had to run away when Yukiko stole his pin last week on the same day 'Not again! Damn you Yukiko…'
Bitterly he fumed as the angry Reaper chased them in the direction of the Center Street Entrance district.
Hope you enjoyed the chapter, to be continued…
