Chapter 38: Hypocrisy

"You are an idiot!"

"Hey! It was a joke my pops and Lord Totosai told me! Totosai's the idiot!"

Giggles erupted from the woman's throat like the sound of silver bells ringing over the demon prince beside her as he told her another tale from his father's long list of childhood stories and Totosai's great words of wisdom. They never made sense to him as a child and as he was older he realized they never were meant to. He looked down at the woman in his arms as her body folded into his own while her hand played with the soft fur on his ears. The covers spewed amuck around them leaving much skin revealed to the eyes as they lay talking and sharing stories. They were laying languidly in each other's arms laughing about one thing or another when Inuyasha got quiet.

"Wh-"

"Shhh-" Inuyasha shushed as his ears twirled in various directions.

Then she felt it. Someone flared their aura in approach. Inuyasha glared at the door intensely as a knock was heard a few moments later. Suddenly, he got up and put on pants briskly before walking quickly to the intricate shoji doors. He exited and closed it behind him as he went into his receiving room. Kagome lay there for a while before sitting and looking for her own robe before he came back in. "The council came to visit." He said quickly before opening his closet and pulling out clothes and a robe.

Kagome sat up quickly covering herself with the blanket. "What for?" She asked worriedly wrapping it around her making to move out of the bed. She watched him leap into his wash room and could hear the sounds of splashing. "They want to speak quickly about the upcoming war and where we stand it seems." She heard him yell over the sound of rustling clothes and the drop of a water bucket. She bit her bottom lip before looking at the jewel on her wrist as she contemplated on things she should do and say.

Not long after she finished her pondering, Inuyasha wondered back into the room fully dressed with wet hair being ruthlessly toweled dry; muttering a string of curse words about pricks interrupting everything. Kagome shook her head and grabbed the sheet wrapping herself in it tightly before making her way over to him and taking his hand into hers. She slowly led him over to the vanity he placed in the corner for her where her things lay. Since she spent most of her time there anyway, he saw to her needs to place one there along with a few of her yakutas and kimono's.

He watched her while fighting back the urge of temptation as she came to him and slowly dragged the towel off of his silver locks onto the floor. She began leisurely combing his long silver mane with the beaded brush he got her as a gift many moons back. A hum came from her lips as she enjoyed her duty of grooming the male in front of her. She gently worked out every knot until it fell straight down his back and dried like magic. He closed his eyes feeling her slender fingers rub against his scalp following after the brush being mindful of his ears. A soft growl resounded in his esophagus at the massage of the brush as it dragged soothingly over his scalp. Too soon to his liking she had finished and placed the brush down. She quickly walked over to his wardrobe and pulled out the formal overlay with intricate patterns of white and blue much like his brothers except the solid color was red instead of white. She pulled it onto him quietly doing her job to brush off any loose hair to to tie all the placement knots. She swept his bangs and went over to give him his father's weapon which he took gratefully and attached said relic to his hip. Pleased with her work she smiled gently to him before she found herself being swept up into his arms and placed on the pillows, sheets, and furs on his bed that smelled pungently of their scents and coupling.

"I'll be back." He muttered. "You can come later if you wish."

Her mouth opened in awe as his clawed hands ran through her hair tenderly looking at his mark on her shoulder. "To-To the meeting with the council?"

"They are not our council anymore," He grumbled. "We won't lose any more pack because of stupid traditions that aren't even related to the Inu Clan." He looked back at the door with determination. "We will not lose any more good people and control over our lands. The old man wouldn't have it f he was alive."

She smiled gently before reaching up to cup his cheek in the palm of her hand. "I will be there shortly."

He nodded into her palm before kissing it and nipping at it with his canines. "Those assholes! Making me get up for nothing!"

"Watch your mouth!" She chastised watching him bend down to kiss her lips passionately before pulling back. He stood up and made his way out of the room leaving her by herself alone in the room.

She waited till he was gone before stretching her aura to see who had come. She felt a little out of sorts with the knowledge that they were so wrapped up in each other's worlds that they failed to sense anyone approaching. She was angered with them. If they wouldn't have passed judgment on a demon and human marriage none of this would have happened. She got up with renewed vigor to get to the bottom of everything and to stand proudly by whatever decision Inuyasha and her pack made. She flared her aura again calling out to her one woman army.

She took a quick bath making sure to scrub herself clean of Inuyasha's homage to her body continuously before getting dressed. She walked over to the curtains and pulled them open revealing a noon sky. She walked out of his quarters and into her own quest one when said woman arrived. Kagome gasped at how beautiful Kaede looked despite her age. Her hair was up into a giant grey bun with long locks framing her face. Placed in her hair was a gold moon crest indicating her station within the house. Her robes were long and purple with a white, red, and blue sash hanging over her shoulders that matched the patterns of her Lords. Seeing Kagome in her state of undress she rushed into the room closing the doors behind her swiftly.

"Quickly child." Kaede spoke before getting to work with her hair.

"Who's here exactly?" She asked timidly aware of the importance of this surprise meeting.

Kaede worked her magic which Kagome watched in awe finding this to be her first time getting prepped by the Lady of the House. "All the demon Lords and Ladies along with a few goods and land giants as well as a few governors. Along with that meddlesome Kikyo." Kaede spat. "I must warn you child, it is best if ye heeds my warning and do not play in Kikyo's hand. Already she has used words of trickery and has been the one behind this seemingly surprise visit to our war room." Kaede quickly began to grab for the face paints and went to work on Kagome's face with assured hands and eyes of determination. "You are the soon to be the new lady of the house and you must act accordingly. Everyone in that room I can tell you won't like you. You are lucky if you can win over one. Ye were a concubine, ye are human, and you laid with a half demon as a concubine. Now you have status and above all your status will trump their own. So you must go in with your head held high for they will surely question you and throw in your face your history. Be strong Lady Kagome! Now up!" She commanded as Kagome looked at herself in the mirror.

A soft gasp escaped her lips as she watched her own reflection. She looked back at herself noting the intricate hairstyle on her head with many loops and buns. Her face seemingly looked polished with a shine to it and a soft glow deep gold to her eye lids and her lips dusted with a light pink. Kaede came into the room with clothes and jewels. Quickly, she grabbed Kagome and went to work putting on the outfit. "Now remember Kagome. They will say cruel things. You must overcome them. You are strong, intelligent, powerful, beautiful and above all a miko." She started pulling on the sleeve of the garment. "You are worth more than a few petty demons." She spoke as Kagome's eyes started to water at her praise and affirmations. "You need to show this today as the Lords will make a stand. And do not worry, I will be there." She stated before putting on her accessories and fixing places here and there. Kaede took a step back and smiled. "You will do just fine!" She stated before beckoning her out the room.

Their feet silently walked along the floor. Their footsteps echoed as they went through the main hallway where guards stood attentive and alert watching them as they passed. A few shared a few appreciative glances at the beauty of Kagome as she looked forward seemingly ignoring their presence. She knew she held more gems and silks on her than ever as she focused on moving in the intricate garment. Her hair ornaments jingled softly with each movement as she walked forward.

Shouting could be heard down the hallway before she covered her scent wanting to not bring too much attention to herself. She halted with Kaede and listened to the conversation. Only the foreign voices were shouting whereas her new family spoke in quiet seemingly deadly tones. Every now and then Inuyasha's voice would raise in defense followed by his well-known profanity.

"You house a traitor in your jails!"

Kagome's eyes balked before they narrowed in anger as she leaned in closer. Many men and women could be heard whispering and mumbling about.

"I see we were right to come today then. The West has fallen into shambles."

"You speak unwisely. Watch your tongue. Don't' forget our Lord Tashio was the reason you stand here today plump and soft handed."

"You his sons…consorting with humans! What kind of kingdom is this? A kingdom, foolishly built around the dreams of a dead general."

Kagome swallowed hearing a growl from Inuyasha and feeling his aura tilt in a more dangerous heading. Quickly, she stood straight with pride and nodded to Kaede who acknowledge for a pair of demons to open the door quietly. Still hiding her aura she walked carefully in as everyone seemed to ignore her presence. Her eyes sized the room filled with demons and demonesses of various ranks before a pair of golden eyes caught hers. Their eyes captured each other as the air escaped from their lungs.

Inuyasha paused in thought finding his aura had calmed instantly. His eyes roamed her figure finding her to look ethereal a goddess sent from heaven itself in her pure white kimono. Her long black hair was pulled up on her head with gold pins and clips of flowers. Her obi held the colors of his clan and the Western Lands. Her face held a soft blush and a smiled dedicated only to him.

Both Inu Lords along with their clan stood up at her presence indicating a woman of high ranking at arrived and was showing her respect. Inuyasha beckoned her to him with his hand held out. She took another glance eyeing a few other demons with the silver hair and some with the eyes indicating their belonging within the Inu clan. Bankoustu stood to Inuyasha's side in full battle armor looking better than she last seen him. He seemed to have hope shining in his rubicund eyes. Her own landed on Kikyo's silk pink kimono flashily sitting on the sides with her chin covered by an elegant white fan. Her long hair was curled elegantly on her head bearing her long slender neck with her face made up in its finest.

Gasp and words of rumor and whispers filled the air quickly as they all looked to see who had entered the room and was acknowledged with such respect. Quietly, she walked forward ignoring the sounds around her as she made her way to the people that mattered. She held her head high as the chime of her hair accessories sang of her movements and the enchanting color of her kimono accompanied by her strikingly beautiful complexion captivated everyone. Sesshoumaru nodded as she lightly bowed to them and made to sit on Inuyasha's left before he took her hand and guided her to his right where she sat elevated next to him indicating her move in status and between the Inu Lords which meant her sacred protection in the clan. The Inu's nodded before seating while some moved to get a better look at the newest addition into the clan.

"What is going on here!" Haku bellowed standing and pointing at Kagome with a sharp claw.

Kikyo stood straight on the side. "See, Lord Haku." She stated hiding behind her fan.

"This is prohibited! We should strip you of your lands now!" He roared smashing his hand on the table before him.

The demons and demonesses all mumbled before Sesshoumaru growled before standing causing Kikyo to lean a back in fear. "You will take nothing." He stated coldly. "As of today we are disposing our alliance with this council." He stated nonchalantly as if he was done with them all lacing ice within his tone without so much of raising his voice. Gasps and auras flared in fear as his deadly gaze raked the room. "The Inu clan bows and needs no one." He declared as his clansmen nodded in agreement.

Kagome looked about noting the surprisingly many white haired females and males on their side of the room yet donning different marks and eye colors. She had seen pictures of clans members and even a few occasionally came to the castle for random things but never had she seen them all in one room and dressed so eloquently as she was. Their faces were stone hard with the men seemingly resolute and willing to follow their Alphas and the West to war. She noticed a few women shared and glances and nodded in greeting and acceptance with only one looking at her with indifference. She could feel the men slowly spilling their auras about in their silent showcase of power. The Inu Clan was the clan to not mess over. Pride swelled inside of her and without realizing it her own power began to silently pulse along with their own gaining their attention and respect.

"If you wish to challenge this Sesshoumaru than we can do battle at your earliest convenience unless you choose to be coward and hide behind your armies."

Lord Haku growled at his words. "I fear no one!" He growled out before looking at his fellow council members and their families. "Tell me you will separate from us for what cause? Is it because of this witch? Tell me what treachery have you befallen onto this house!" He demanded.

Inuyasha growled at her side making to stand but she quickly held up her hand. Inuyasha looked down at his intended before making eye contact with his brother. Sesshoumaru nodded before stating. "She is pack and you will show her respect in our presence."

Kagome delicately placed her hand in her lap and chose that moment to speak. "Besides my lords and clansmen you have more important things to discuss like the nonsense of war and previous injudicious traditions." She stated before glaring at Kikyo feeling her miko energy boil inside of her.

"Finally, some estrogen in this room." Spoke a female fanning herself dressed in gems and oozing a sense of deadly sexuality. "We need another calm, intelligent, and beautiful mind on this council. I approve of this Lord Inuyasha of the Western Lands. "

Inuyasha did his signature humph with a smirk on his face as Kagome controlled the urge to roll her own eyes at his behavior yet a light blush crept to her cheeks at the compliment. She looked back at the woman with orange hair rolled on top of her head surrounded by lesser lords and ladies in her providence.

The demoness looked to her again. "Hello, little one. My name is Lady Yuri. Empress of the Land of Fire. And you are?"

Kagome looked to Kaede who nodded. Kagome swallowed and stood before taking a bow to everyone. "Good afternoon, my name is Lady Kagome intended to Lord Inuyasha of the Western Lands."

Kikyo gasped before looking at said male as he looked onto Kagome with pride and admiration. 'That bitch! No!'

A few demons griped until one spoke up. "A concubine! How foolish!"

Lady Yuri looked at the man before sneering. "I believe every man in here should hold their tongues when it comes to the past since many of you divulge in a few concubines yourselves and have mates as well that currently sit next to your sides." She vocalized seemingly looking down to her claws nonchalantly. "How men quickly forget their transgressions while kicking up those of others." She stated as she stared with a smile at Kagome's relieved face. She nodded in acknowledgement.

"Welcome dear Lady Kagome. Pleasure to meet you and have you here among these men of war and women of tyranny." She finished before fanning herself as then men began to speak while some of the ladies looked among each other in scrutiny.

"Now let's focus on our current problem. I was dragged here on a short notice regarding this unforeseen war due to Lord Naraku. I wish to not get involved seeing as it uses a lot of my time and resources which could be used towards more fruitful ventures. I care not if she is human and have no qualms with the humans. But I will unleash my wrath if it touches my people." The stated coldly with her posse nodding behind her in agreement. Men agreed with the fierce woman as she waited for answers.

Kagome bit her lip wanting to yell out Kikyo's doing and save his name but she couldn't until she got the entire truth. She looked to the Western Lords who also nodded in agreement.

Lord Haku steamed watching the woman sit among them like equals. 'She must be eliminated.' He thought.

Kikyo shared his same sentiments she boiled with rage watching the woman before clutching her stomach. She was slowly feeling weakened and needed her serpents to deliver more souls into her body. Time was running out and she knew she needed more souls just to sustain the life inside of her. Surely if the miko died her soul would be worth ten more than average. The wheels in her head began to turn as she studied the miko with scrutiny.

"We kill Naraku and kill off the humans I vote." One of the demons raged as some mumbled their agreement.

Lord Haku stood. "Exactly. We have decided that war is unavoidable. We will rage war with the humans and kill Naraku in the process. Maybe we will get the humans to do it for us. A most fitting end to him I say. If you do not stand with us then you are against us." He stated with finality.

Lord Sesshoumaru had enough and he stood up as well along with his brother. "You have heard our stance. We will simply protect our own lands and all those within it. If you share this sentiment than join at your own free will but the West bows to no one" He stated while staring Lord Haku down.

"Especially those simply going into war out of greed." Inuyasha voiced folding his arms across him.

Lord Haku's mouth fluttered flabbergasted before his beady eyes settled on Kagome. In rage he spoke. "What kind witch are you, you wretched whore!"

Inuyasha's eyes flashed red but before he could move Kagome stood up and her powers flashed sizzling the man's flesh while the others around the room hissed at her powerful display of power stifling the room and bearing down heavily in a show of dominance. Lord Haku's eyes flashed red but he backed away feeling his instincts kick in for survival.

"Lord Haku." She addressed as she stood as well capturing everyone's attention as it died down. "You really don't know the meaning of that word. I have only had one partner while you fit the description quite accurately with the way you carry yourself and indulge." She spat. "I have done nothing but try to see reason with everyone to find the truth yet here you are wishing to do war with humans and Lord Naraku. I do recall that everyone that has died has been involved with the death of his mate." She stepped down and walked slowly to the man pulsing her aura onto him in warning. His red eyes showed as he raised his hand to strike her and show her the proper place. Kagome stood tall unphased feeling anger and rage take at the unjustness of it all.

"I find it odd that everyone here has really nothing to gain from this war except you, which sounds like property including my intended lands should they fall without heir. I also find it extremely odd that you pressure everyone into killing Naraku when everyone here isn't threatened by him except for you." She stated as the men in her clan bristled preparing for a brawl should he lay a hand on the woman. He went to strike her but her hand flew up and blocked his wrist before she used her powers to toss him backwards across the room.

"Come now Lord Haku." She spoke with her head held high as Lord Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha flashed to her side feeling great pride and astonishment at the young onna's accusations and truth. Her words rang and echoed around the room as it settled and captured the attention of the many clans and demons present.

"Are you afraid of Lord Naraku?" She posed hearing the other demons bristle and mumble at the new revelations being made. "Seems to me if my Lords were so upset over an issue, they would have challenged him into battle without war because they are courageous to do so. But you, you need an army to fight just one. One who you crossed over first. And if I am correct, Lord Naraku is the one that needs justice here since you broke demon law and had his wife murdered."

Everyone was up on their feet hissing by then watching Lord Haku has he gathered himself up from the floor staring everywhere. Kikyo looked about the room and silently began to make her way out of the room before something caught her eye. Her eyes became transfixed on Kagome's wrist watching something turn purple to black. Realization donned on the dark priestess taking the rage inside of her to new heights.

Kagome stood tall and unmoving as she stared into red gleaming eyes. Kaede walked along side of her flashing her own aura while holding out a pair of subjugation beads just in case. The entire Inu clan stood strong with the women in the center being protected by the men as the hundreds of other demons in the room mumbled at the scene before them.

Kagome glared before pointing at him. "Tell us. Is it true you, you had Lady Midoriko mate of Lord Naraku killed because she was human? A crime against demon law regardless." She dared ask feeling her heart beat wildly in her chest as she waited for his answer.

He growled looking around at everyone's eyes fell onto him realizing he was cornered. Choosing to save face he looked down and bowed slowly. "I refuse to speak to a worthless human." His eyes looked to the Inu Lords and their clansmen. "Brethren! This is the end of playing childish games with the humans and watching Naraku take valuable resources and govern a land that lay in ruins." She spoke looking around at the demons that all stood up. "We go to war with Naraku in three days. Stand with us or fall before us!" He stated before stepping past Kagome and leaving the room with what little pride he had left after being confronted by the small onna.

Kagome's heart beat wildly as she watched him walk briskly away out of the door. Her eyes closed knowing his answer and hoping everyone else could see past pride and greed to see it as well. She watched as some demons looked to her with fear while many more bowed to her in respect at her display of power and command. She looked to her Lords hoping she did not move out of turn only to sigh in relief at their support. Clapping erupted suddenly as she looked to see Lady Yuri stand clapping with a smile on her face. Slowly others joined in until the whole room erupted into applause while others fled to get out of the ningens threatening presence.

Lady Yuri gave a short bow before speaking. "Lady Kagome has my lands support and speaking on behalf of my alliance of the Eastern Lands you have our loyalty." Kagome swallowed looking to the many men and women standing behind her nodding in agreement. Suddenly, more lords and ladies around the room gave their loyalty.

"It's time we change laws anyway. Humans can be quite profitable." One richly looking plump demon spoke before sipping a drink in his hand.

"It's not worth our resources fighting. Such petty agenda we have." Another one spoke up.

"Lord Haku chased away by a human! A very beautiful one at that." Another elderly demon joked. "So entertaining today has been."

"Quite a woman he has there." Another Lord boasted.

"Can you believe it? Lord Haku may have killed a mate?"

Whispers and rumors began to boil to the surface before Kagome cleared her throat politely while lightly calming down and taking Inuyasha's arm as support.

"You can choose to fight for someone who clearly doesn't have your interest at heart and ruins families or you can be free will thinkers and choose to protect what's rightfully yours and respect what's rightfully another's." She stated feeling a low growl of approval from Inuyasha.

Lord Sesshoumaru nodded at this before taking her other hand in agreement. "If you wish to stay and develop an alliance with us you are free to stay for the afternoon as we develop a contract that will be stated in clear language the terms of agreement."

The doors were opened as they escorted the female and were followed out of it by the whole Inu clan. Sesshoumaru announced orders before everyone split up and came back downstairs sometime later that morning. Kagome watched as she was escorted to the Western Wing towards the family receiving room which looked more like a large den. When they reached into the large clan's den, women and men spoke and asked questions while the Lords answered in their native language. She had come here only once learning that this space was for immediate family and mates only. And she was being introduced to other members of the clan and learned quickly that Inu men and women were extremely loyal and respected the family den. When the Inu clan families came she got the chance of playing games with their children and speaking with the others but now she felt extremely privileged to be in such a space.

Furs, pillows, and blankets lay everywhere providing comfort as everyone gathered at spoke with each other and reacquainting themselves. Torches on the wall were lit setting the room in a nice dim glow accompanied by the fire place in the corner. Kagome sat practically in her intended's lap as his instincts took over as he wrapped his arms around her protectively feeling at ease among his kin. Many of them congratulated Kagome on her arrival into the clan and nuzzled her in welcoming. Kagome could feel as if she understood but it was foreign to her ears and the demonic culture had taken her by surprise with women pecking her cheek and men taking her hand and pressing it softly to their cheeks.

Inuyasha nuzzled her neck in front of everyone much to her embarrassment but she found it oddly reassuring. Everyone had dressed in light silks and furs lounging about. Inuyasha was dressed in his fire red attire while she simply donned one of his large red shirts which looked more like a dress. Of course he made her put it on after she argued about the indecency of it. But, after looking around the room she could clearly see she had nothing to be ashamed about.

Seconds passed before the other men began to nuzzle and women rubbed the backs of their mates as well to calm them while continuing discussing the issues at hand. They all shared the silver hair features and the stripes along their cheeks and body but the colors varied along with the symbols on everyone's forehead showing the different tribes they come from. About forty or so women and men spoke about the ramifications but stood behind Kagome sensing no lies in none of her words. They quickly could sense the malicious intent of Lord Haku and were appalled at the truth that he had committed a horrific crime regardless of species; the killing of an innocent mate and possibly the newborn offspring.

Sesshoumaru entered the room carrying a sleeping Rin as he laid her down among her adoptive family. The women cooed at the small little girl resting before them. Sesshoumaru nuzzled her in affection before covering her up in furs and listening to the conversation around him.

"So what is the next step?" One asked gently as silence hung in the air.

Sesshoumaru looked to his family and spoke. "We live on and protect our clan and lands. Enough clan blood has been spilt." He stated looking down at Rin in thought ignoring their sympathetic looks to his loss. And what's worse that they found no body to lay to rest a true sign of disrespect against their clan.

Kagome looked down into her hands as she bit her lip. She knew what must be done, but she was sure no one would like it or believe her. But, she knew it must be done. "If I may?" She asked politely. Everyone looked at her as she made to sit up from Inuyasha and look at everyone.

"I think we should do what no one else has thought of doing and confront Lord Naraku." Everyone shared a glance while the women nodded in agreement. The Inu Lords look to her while some of the men whispered about the likelihood of that happening.

"Men in this clan are like fire and women are like water. A balance we maintain in this clan." An elderly Inu woman spoke up. "She speaks with wisdom. I believe Alphas what she says is truth and will cause healing. Continue young one." She said leaning forward.

Kagome swallowed gathering her thoughts quickly. "This seems to center around Naraku and his ties with the Inu clan. You are all very powerful and pose a threat to Lord Haku. I believe he is just using Naraku to profit off of the chaos and death that will ensue. If our Lords die, then he will control our territory. If Naraku dies he will control his as well. But I'm sure if I can speak with him, I can get him to listen to me and do the right thing by siding with us and explaining his side of the story. We know his mate and child was taken from him."

The elderly demoness nodded. "Such a despicable manner at that. Lord Haku would die immediately if it was any of us." She stated coldly as the men and women growled in agreement. Some looking to the sleeping Rin with condolences for the loss of her mother.

Kagome nodded. "But, he had no one. No one came to watch him self-destruct." She whispered silently. "But, it's not too late. You accepted him before, if you are willing would you give him at least a listening ear despite the rumors of what he may have done. And if he has done unspeakable crimes then we can judge him on the truth. If he turns out to be in the right then we can join and unite like before with the humans and that sorry excuse of a council will perish."

The demons nodded and began speaking quietly in agreement as her words of justice and equality rang through them.

"But will he listen?" One demon asked as the others sighed.

Kagome nodded. "I am positive he will if I go to see him." She stated looking up into her mates eye as she swallowed wanting to share everything with her new family. A part of her was scared but she knew this was the only way to save them all from war and to bring peace.

"Kagome? How do you know?" Inuyasha asked as he looked into her chocolate orbs watching her pull up her sleeves. Gasps and mumbles could be heard as more to the puzzle had been revealed to them. She showed her right wrist which held Inuyasha's crescent moon mark visible as day.

Lord Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha grabbed her wrists in their hands peering down at the undeniable show of markings on her left wrists. The black spider hanging from the pink bow and arrow was seen bright as day.
