Kila sucked in a breath and thought about the breath training from when she was a child. Inhale. 1. 2. 3. Exhale. 1. 2. 3. She tried not to think about the last time she had used the technique, when she was breathing through the pain of her uncles rewards. Or when her father had taught her, her father only brought back bad memories.
The man seemed concerned about her and lead her towards the balcony nearby. He placed his hand on her back, in between her shoulder blades and kept it there till they reached it.
"Are you okay? It's alright." he said gently as he shook her shoulder. She reacted and wrapped her arm around his before hitting her palm to his shoulder. There was a pop and then she let go, muttering something about her uncle.
Zuko stepped out onto the wooded area and watched as the man fell to the ground. He realised the person next to him was Kila and walked over to them slowly as the man got up and shoved her to the floor. She looked around, eyes wide and blank. That was all Zuko needed to see to run over and grab the man off of her.
She didn't seem to be able to tell the difference between him and he man and fired a blast at them both. It was white hot and she was too close to cancel it out. Zuko pushed the man out of the way and jumped after him. He got up after a second and slowly walked towards her. Her eyes cleared and she looked around.
"Oh Agni." she muttered as Zuko walked towards her. When he reached her he offered her a hand up. She took it and stood shakily.
"Who are you?" he asked, almost shouting. Kila flinched and gripped Zuko's hand tighter.
"Her name is Lee, sorry for everything. She has problems with people she doesn't know. It freaks her out." Zuko said, gently rubbing his thumb across her finger.
"Oh. And you are?"
"Her cousin, Chan. I really am sorry."
"It's nothing. My fault. I would like the cloak back though." he said as he stood up and reached for his cloak. He took it and left, she tried not to flinch as his hand connected with her shoulder but she failed.
When he was gone Zuko wrapped her in a hug tight to his chest, his hands rubbing her back. She clutched onto him tightly and cried quietly.
"It's okay. You're safe. I'm here. Your uncle is dead." he said in a whisper. He didn't even need to ask if it was her uncle that she was scared of, he knew. His hands creeped up to her hair and pulled her gently closer to him as her hands clawed at the back of his top.
"You're freezing." he said as his arm pressed against her shoulder. She nodded into his chest and he pulled back slightly. "Hows your fire?" he asked making her look up at him.
She sucked in a breath a let it out, licks of white fire coming out. It was barely warm from where he was stood.
"Remember the breathing techniques Kiki." he said as she nodded and stepped back into the hug as she started to shake. "We need to get back inside." he continued as he let go and started towards the theatre, taking her hand and leading the way.
The scenes flew by and then it was caught up to the invasion. Kila flinched as she watched the failure, watched the people who had been working with them die. She watched as the actor who played her ran away from the fight, ran and hid. She knew that that wasn't what had happened but seeing on the stage made it feel like she was a coward. She watched as she ran away, she seemed to be their favourite to mock.
Zuko joined them and the group accepted him, saying they didn't have much choice. Sokka got up and went to leave before Suki grabbed him and pulled him down.
"That's it, it's caught up to the present."
"There is still more." Suki said as the play continued. Ozai appeared on the stage, summoning the power from Sozin's comet. Azula ran in and said that the avatar, Zuko, and Kila were at the palace. Ozai said something and then the scene changed.
Azula was stood facing Zuko and Kila. They all started towards each other at the same time, Kila and Azula throwing blue 'fire' at each other. Azula's fire hit Kila on the crudely drawn scar, making her fall to the floor. She tried to get up but Azula threw another flame at her and then she was surrounded in it. With a scream she was dead.
Zuko turned and looked over his shoulder at Kila who was watching with wide eyes.
"Kiki-"
"I'm fine Zuzu." she said, her voice cracking as she clawed at the fabric of her trousers.
She stared blankly at the stage as the play continued, only focussing when Sokka tapped her shoulder.
"It's over. You alright?" he asked as they stood up. She shrugged.
As they left she felt Zuko gently take her hand.
"Are you alright? You zoned out."
"I'm okay. How did it end?"
"Well, I died, Azula killed me and I screamed honour. Aang was killed by my father."
"That's not good." she replied as they started across the sand.
"That sucked." Katara said.
"Yeah, but the effects were cool." Sokka said. Everyone nodded as they started back towards their current house.
When they reached the house Kila let out a loud, sharp whistle and Feng appeared in the darkness flying towards her. She carried her inside and put her down on the cabinet as she pulled out a scroll of paper and started to write.
"What are you writing?" Zuko asked as he walked into the room.
"A letter to Nai nai, telling her to go to Ba Sing Se."
"She cant go to Ba Sing Se, the fire nation took it over." Zuko said.
"Do you really think we can let them keep Ba Sing Se, Besides Nai nai is an earth bending master. And Cana is- was nearing mastery again when I left. They can look after themselves." she replied as she sealed the letter and tied it to Feng's back.
The hawk took off and started the long journey back to Nai nai and Cana as Kila sat on the bed.
"You've had that letter for a while, why now are you replying?" Zuko asked as he sat down next to her.
"I don't want to die like that, because I can't move my leg. I- I am going to help- I want to help with Ba Sing Se, because other wise I fear I may slow you all down."
"Slow us down? Kila you hold us together. You're the reason they accepted me." he replied as she lay down on the bed and started to cry. Zuko lay down next to her and held her gently.
"I'm sorry I'm making a scene."
"I did the same thing when we arrived." he replied before letting to go and pulling the covers over them both. "It's alright." he continued as he pulled her closer and fell asleep.
Kila woke up a few hours later, blue fire burning the covers which she stared at for a second before putting them out and getting up. She faltered slightly, her leg giving under her before she grabbed onto the cabinet and pulled herself back up. She frowned at it and pinched the skin lightly before frowning more.
She started towards the door, leaning on anything she could on the way. She knew that this was side effect of the massive scar on her leg. She knew she must have slept on it the wrong way. She made it to the courtyard in the middle of the house and sat down heavily.
Kila took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, she knew she needed to calm down before she attempted to get back to sleep. Five flames burst to life around her, growing and shrinking in time with her breathing. She calmed down and looked up at the night sky, for the first time she was certain she was looking at the same stars she had grown up seeing.
She smiled at the memories that tugged at her mind as she tried to get up. Her leg was still lacking feeling so she started to crawl towards the steps and pulled herself up. She started back into the house, using the wall to balance her and help her along, until she made it back to the room she was sharing. She was still tired so she walked back to the bed and fell asleep.
She woke up and barely muffled the scream that escaped her mouth as she tried to move her leg. Zuko was awake instantly, looking at her with blurry eyes as he sat up.
"Are you alright?" he asked quietly. She shook her head. "I'll get Katara." he said as he got up, accidentally knocking her leg, she sucked in a breath and winced. Zuko turned back to her and realised it was her leg causing her the pain.
"It's your leg isn't it?" she nodded and he sighed. "Can you feel it at all?"
"Only at my hip, even that hurts. Everything else is in pain." she said through a struggled breath. Zuko nodded before leaving quickly, his footsteps fading as he ran down the hall. He returned quickly, a tired Katara running after him.
"Where does it hurt?" Katara asked, worried, before yawning.
"My leg, I can barely feel it." she managed to get out as Katara rolled her over onto her back. She let out a low groan before it turned into a scream which she quickly muffled with her hand. Katara let go of her leg and frowned.
"Kila, I need to get to the scar." she said as she started to untie the older girls top. "How far down does it go?" she asked as she reached for the water in the skin by her side.
"All down her leg." Zuko replied. Katara looked at him dropped the water out of surprise.
"All- all the way? I don't have enough water then. We'll need a bath for that amount of water." she said as she got up and started out of the room. She stopped and turned at the door.
"Zuko, she trusts you more than me, get it so that I can see the scar." she said before turning away and running to the bathroom.
Zuko walked towards her slowly and smiled wanly at her as he sat down.
"Trust me?"
"Of course." she said as he untied the tie of her trousers and started to work them down. She let out a small scream as he mover her leg to get the trousers off and he stopped, looking up at her.
"Are you okay?"
"Just get the trousers off." she said, taking a deep breath and grabbing at the covers. He pulled the leg the rest of the way off and looked at the scar. Parts of it were a dark, sore red, around her hip and knee were where it was darkest.
"Oh Agni." he said before pulling the other leg off and helping her up. "I'll carry you." he said as she slowly calmed down and put her arms around his neck before he picked her up.
"The bath is ready." Katara said as they started towards the room. Kila tensed, Zuko felt the muscles in her back tighten.
"No, no, no."
"Kiki, if you manage to drown with a water bender nearby, you have the worst luck." he said gently as he readjusted her body. She sucked in a breath and let out a hiss.
Kila frowned at the water in the bath, tensing even further, her fingers pulling on Zuko's hair before she realised what she was doing and tried to stop.
"Katara, do you need that much water?" Zuko asked as he held her closer to him.
"No, but if there is more then I can use more. Why?"
"She's scared of bathing." he said as Katara looked over at Kila, who was staring blankly at the water.
"Why? What happened?"
"She- she drowned her father. He had been burnt on his chest and face, she knew that water needed to be on the burn, but she was a child." he replied. Katara pulled some of the water out and Kila's eyes focused, turning to look at her.
"I didn't know." she said quietly.
"I didn't tell you." Kila said as Zuko started towards the bath. Katara got up and helped her in, gentle around her legs but still touching the scar making her wince.
The water started to glow and Kila grabbed at the side of the bath, gritting her teeth as Katara started to heal all that she could. Zuko sat down next to the bath and held her hand as she squeezed it tightly. Her face scrunched up and tears started to fall down her cheeks as she started to shake. Zuko reached out and wiped the tears away and turned her head to face him.
"Why did it get this bad?" he asked gently.
"I ran out," a pause as she sucked in a breath, a small, bitten off, scream interrupting her. "A couple of days ago." she continued and squeezed Zuko's hand harder.
"We'll find you some more." he said before kissing her forehead. He glanced down at her leg and frowned at the little difference Katara's healing was making.
The dark pink, almost red parts had dulled down but still looked sore and painful. Kila sucked in a breath and raised her free hand to cover the scream that came out of her mouth. Zuko held her closer and tried to calm her shaking.
"Katara, I don't think she can take much more." he warned as she grabbed his hand tighter and started to scream. Zuko flinched and turned to look at Katara who quickly withdrew her hands.
The water stopped glowing and her screaming stopped. It took a while before her breathing evened out. Katara seemed torn, she wanted to continue healing but it was causing her immense pain just touching it.
"Is it any better?" Katara asked, looking at the large scar. Kila moved slightly, her eye twitched but she didn't cry out.
"I can feel it, that's a plus." she said, her voice hoarse from the screaming. Katara smiled and stood up.
"I'm going back to sleep. If you need anymore help, just get me." she said before getting up and leaving, yawning as she left the room. They sat in silence as her breathing evened out and her hand slowly stopped squeezing his, though she didn't let go.
