Clementine:
She walked through the gate with the others. Troy and Tavia began removing their bindings. "You all should get rested up tonight. Y'all gonna be working your asses off tomorrow." Troy said.
Clementine looked up and realized they didn't even have a roof over their heads. We'll be sleeping out in the cold until we escape. On the ride here, Nick had made a comment that at least they'd be warmer at this place. I guess we don't get anything good.
"The bed's for you." Tavia said as she took off the last of the bindings.
"Yeah, it would be." Rebecca said "Keeping me out in the cold like this, but still trying to make me feel comfortable. That's Bill for ya."
"Hey everyone." A stranger said. Clementine turned to face the voice and saw a one armed man nearby.
"Reggie!" Rebecca said as she walked forward and hugged the man. "I'm so sorry. God, what did they do to you?" She said as she looked at his arm.
"Oh this?" The man shrugged his armless shoulder. "That wasn't Bill. This happened a while after you guys left."
"Reggie helped us." Sarah said. "When we ran away, he was going to come with us."
Clementine asked, "Why didn't he?"
"When we were all running, he fell. And everyone kept running. He had both of his arms then." She replied. They left him behind...
The rest of the original escapes had gathered around their old friend, while Kenny and Saritia stayed near the back along with her and Sarah. "I've been working outside the walls ever since you guys left." Reggie said. "Patchwork, fortification, stuff like that. A lurker snuck up on me while I was hammering something. Thankfully, the arm was removed really quickly. It saved my life."
"You aren't the only one who's had a run in with the lurkers." Andrew said as he lifted up bandaged right hand with a missing pinky finger.
"Holy shit." Reggie said. "When did that happen?"
"Just a couple of days ago. I had to punch one of the things, managed to cut my finger on it's teeth. Carlos took the thing off without even warning me about it. I really shouldn't be complaining, considering what happened to you."
Reggie laughed at that. "Eh don't worry. I'm sure it sucked for you too. I was in the hospital for a week and a half. The blood loss and fever almost got me, but I lived."
Troy walked over to Reggie. "Hey, Reggie."
Reggie put on what looked like an incredibly forced smile. "Hey Troy."
"Don't go fucking up now. Bill's real close to letting you out of here. Keep things quiet out here tonight, and I'll make sure he knows how helpful you were."
Reggie looked surprised, "You'd really do that? Thanks."
Troy shrugged. "Don't get used to it." He walked away and closed the gate to the prison.
There was a brief moment of silence until Troy had walked a good distance away. Alvin was the first to speak, "I'd never thought I'd see the day when that son of a bitch did something nice for anyone."
"You and me both." Reggie said as he looked at his old friends. Same here. He didn't show any regret. At least Bonnie looked somewhat upset about what happened.
"Wait, I need to introduce you to some folks." Rebecca said, pointing him towards Kenny and Sarita.
"Hey guys. I'm Reggie." Reggie said to Kenny and Sarita.
Saritia, and Clementine. "That's Kenny."
"Heya."
"And that's Sarita.
"Hello."
Reggie looked down at her. "Hello, what's you're name?"
"I'm Clementine." The young girl said.
"It's very nice to meet you Clementine." He stretched out his hand, which Clementine shook."
Reggie looked around. "Wait, where's Carlos?" He said.
"Bill sent him to the hospital to work on some folks."
"Makes sense I guess. Nick, what are Pete and Jess doing? I can't think of anything they would do that couldn't wait until morning." The look on Nick's face was all the answer Reggie needed. He stepped forward and hugged Nick, who stiffened up. "I'm so sorry man."
"Yeah... yeah." Nick said. "Thanks man"
"And... Luke?"
"No, he's still alive, but he got split up from us. He'll be back to get us out out of here. You won't be left behind again, I promise."
Reggie was about to say something before another voice interrupted him, "Can you save it for the morning?" Clementine saw a man laying down under a makeshift tent in the corner of the room.
"Who's that?" Sarah asked.
"I don't recognize him." Nick said.
Reggie turned around to face the man. "Sorry Mike!" He turned around again to face the group. "That's mike. He's kinda a dick when he's tired, but he's the one who saved my life, so I put up with that shit. Even though he probably could have cut a little lower."
"I'm really sorry about that." Alvin said.
"All of you should stop apologizing. It was my choice to help you guys, and besides, Bill said he'd let me join the group again once all of you were caught, so I'm glad you guys are here!" He chuckled, "I'm just joking."
"Yeah, we know." Nick said.
Clementine noticed a woman in a yellow leather jacket sitting over at a bench ant table near the far wall. "Who's that?" She said.
"Who?" Reggie turned around and saw the woman. "Oh, her? Okay, I think her name is Jane. She's fucking weird. She doesn't talk very much. They found her walking around outside the walls covered in lurker guts and the grossest shit." Yuck.
"You probably shouldn't stare kid." Alvin said. Clementine looked away from her as she got up and walked away from the bench.
"Look guys, I know how all of you must feel, but it's really not that bad here."
Nick spoke up "Reggie, what are you talking about?"
"I'm serious. Where else are we going to find food like we have here? We've got loads of canned stuff, "and some greenhouses so we can grow our own food, even in the winter. Bill's mentioned in some speeches that he's been clearing out some nearby farms, getting them ready to be used when spring comes around. On top of that," he turned around and walked towards the fence on the left hand side of the gate, "the building's getting more and more secure over time. Admittedly, partially through forced labor, but that's only till he lets us back in." How can he be defending Carver? "We've even gotten the solar panels working. When was the last time you had electricity?"
Sarah said, "Well, we just came from a lodge with a wind turbine, and back at the cabin we had the electric fence that- "
"It's not a competition. I'm just saying, things aren't as bad as they look. Bill's making something great here: a real community. Things have gotten better."
"How can you say that?" Alvin said. "After everything he's done?"
"I know that he's done bad things , but ever since the accident, I started to realize what this place offers. My injury makes being somewhere safe that much more important."
Clementine spoke up, "This place feels more like a prison than anything else."
"Well that is a very negative attitude to have." It's not an attitude, it's the truth.
"Besides," Sartia said, "I saw him torture that man Carlos, and execute my friend Walter. How can a man like that bring any good into this world?"
"Yeah, she's right!" Kenny said."If Carver's such a great guy, then how the fuck do you explain that?"
Reggie paused for a moment. "Look, I don't know what happened while you were out there. But I do know that after what happened to George, there were a lot of folks in this camp who wanted to take revenge on me. Shel got about a dozen or so people to go to Bill and demand my execution. In case you haven't noticed, he didn't listen to them. He's the only reason I'm still alive."
"Wait a second." Alvin said. "How mad is Shel at all of us now? She spit on my face when I walked in here."
"Actually, she came an apologized to me about the whole 'wanting me dead' incident. So did all of the other people who supported her at the time. She said she wasn't thinking clearly and it was wrong to blame me for your actions. I don't think she blames the rest of the group. I wouldn't expect her to be too happy to see your face around here though. Can't say I really blame her."
"Yeah, me neither." Alvin said sadly.
"Look, either way," Reggie continued, "I'm really close to being let back into the group. Once that happens, I can do a whole lot more for you guys. I'll definitely be able to make all of you more comfortable."
"Comfortable? What are you talking about?" Kenny said. "We're in a Goddamn prison here, and you're talking about being comfortable?"
"I just don't want you guys to mess things up for me. I've worked really hard to get to this point. Like I said before, Bill had more than enough reason to kill me, but he didn't. He;s given me a second chance, and I'm sure he'll do the same for all of you."
"What makes you think I want a second chance?" Rebecca said. "I want to leave here with my family. That's it."
"You're family is safer here. I'm sorry if you don't want to hear that Rebecca, but it's the truth." At that moment, Rebecca grabed her stomach and winced. "Are you alright?"
"I just need to sit down. And do we have anything to drink?"
"Yeah, there's some water by the benches." Reggie said as he turned around. Alvin and Sartia went over to help Rebecca, and Sarah went to get a bottle of water from the bench. Andrew was warming himself by the fire pit in the center of the room, leaving Kenny, Nick, and herself all by themselves with Reggie, who was facing away from them. "That didn't go as planned. Then again, I didn't really make much of a plan to begin with." Reggie walked away.
"What the fuck happened to him?" Nick asked nobody in particular. "The last time I saw him he wanted to leave this place more than any of us, other than Luke."
"Well, alot must've changed since then." Kenny said. "He's clearly drunk too much of the Kool-Aid. We can't trust him."
"He's probably just scared." She said.
"Everyone is scarred Clem. The point is to overcome it, not give into it and sound like some nut job. We've gotta break out of here." Kenny started walking towards the fence on the left of the front gate. "We've gotta look around for a way out of here."
"I'll start checking now." Nick said. "We need to start planning for when Luke finds us again." Nick walked away, leaving just her and Kenny.
"Clem. I need to know what the hell is up with Andy. How the hell did he even get out of the farm? After Lee left him, I figured the walker's woulda gotten him."
"I remember hearing some gun shots as we left the farm. Those must have been from him."
"I'll remember that night till the day I die, but I can't say I remember that little detail." he sighed. "Anyways, what do you think about him Clem?"
"He got bitten saving my life. Didn't I tell you at the lodge?"
"I don't recall. But he lost his finger because he protected you? Did he even know that you knew about him?"
"Yeah. I talked to him about it privately while we were on the road."
"Huh. Well, I guess it's a good think that Lee let that sack of shit live. But after everything he's done... I can't say I'll be warming up to him anytime soon."
"I don't blame you." I doubt I would have been as kind to him if I was the one who got shot in the gut."But he really has gotten better."
"I'll take your word for it I guess. Anyways, I'll distract Reggie, you look around for anything that might help us break out of this place." Sounds like a plan.
Clementine looked for around five minutes, looking for anything that could help. She didn't have any luck and went to the fire pit in the middle of the room. Sarah was sitting on one of the lawn chairs that were scattered around it. "Hey Sarah. You haven't found anything useful, have you?"
"I'm not looking for anything." Sarah said. "I don't want to get Reggie in trouble." She probably wouldn't have been much of a help. I doubt there is anything useful in here anyways. Clementine walked away and headed towards the shelves that were meant to serve as makeshift beds over on the solid wall on the opposite side of the gate. Nick was already lying down and getting ready to sleep.
"At least we don't have to sleep on the ground." She said.
"Trust me kid, this ain't much better." Nick said. "Don't worry. Luke will be here in a few days. He'll find a way. I've known him for damn near twenty years now. That's the type of person he is."
"You're right. He'd do anything for you guys."
"Us guys, you mean." Nick looked at her and smiled. "You're one of us now."
"Shed." Clementine said with a smile.
"Oh come on, that ain't fair." Nick was smiling too. "Anyways, for the first time in my life, I'm agree with Troy,we need to get some sleep. They'll have us slaving away tomorrow for sure."
"Yeah. Night Nick."
"Wait, one more thing. About Andrew... what was Kenny talking about? He's always seemed like a really nice guy to me. Never would have thought he'd be... capable of anything like what that old man said."
"It happened just like Kenny said it, really. But he really has changed. He saved my life, back when he got bit. He knew who I was at that point, that I recognized him."
"Well, that settles it then. He made a mistake. He suffered enough for it. Seeing your family get hurt or killed... there are times like that feels worse than death."
"I know what you mean." Clementine said. We've all been through a lot.
"Yeah." Neither of them talked for about two seconds. "Night Clem."
"Night."
Clem was walking back towards the fire pit when the gate opened. Tavia and a bandaged Carlos walked through. "Dad!" Sarah ran up and gave her dad a hug.
"Hey sweetie." Carlos said affectionately.
"Alvin." Tavia walked in holding her AK-47. "Carver wants you up in his office."
"No, please." Rebecca said. She was sitting on her bed next to Alvin. "We just got here. Can't it wait until morning?"
"Don't make this more difficult than it has to be." Tavia said.
"Bec, it's fine. If he wanted to do something, he'd have done it by now, right? I'll go see what he wants." Alvin stood up, and so did Rebecca.
"I love you silly bear." She said to him as she gave him a hug. Alvin chuckled and kissed her on the cheek. They separated, and Alvin walked over to Tavia.
"Everyone get to sleep." Tavia said. "You'll all be getting up bright and early." She walked out with Alvin and closed the gate.
Clementine walked back over to the makeshift shelves that would be serving as beds. She took the slot underneath Sarah, and lied down on the ground. Kenny and Sarita were to the left of her, underneath Nick. Kenny turned to face her and whispered, "Some of these folks aren't exactly itching to get out. We'll have to do a lot of work on our own if we wanna bust out of here. You with me?"
"Of course. We'll get out of here soon enough." She whispered to him.
"Good, confidence is good." Kenny smiled and went back on his back. "Get some rest. We'll probably need it for tomorrow."
Clementine lied down and went to sleep.
