Chapter 38 : She Has a Gift

(Scarlett's POV)

"You'll call right?" I asked trying to hide my worry tone as Demetri dressed into his grey outfit. Demetri chuckled and pulled me into his arms.

"Stop worrying," he said lightly kissing me on the lips, "we are just tracking down a couple vampires. I've done it plenty of times."

"R-Right." I stuttered trying to remind myself of that. Demetri gave me a smile and one last kiss before saying goodbye and walking out. I took a deep breath and flopped down on the couch and stared at the wall.

"What do I do now?" I muttered to myself while looking around the now empty room. After debating for awhile I stood up and walked out of the room as well. I wondered around the castle wondering what I was planning on doing when I left the room. I was walking down a hall when I heard voice come from one of the many lounges the castle has.

"She's not going to last here." I heard the voices of women come from the room. I leaned against the wall and listened to them curious about what they were talking about.

"Who?" a male's voice came.

"Who do you think?" the same woman replied, "that Scarlett girl." I froze as she spat my name.

"Are you sure you're not just saying that because you're jealous?" another woman said with amusement.

"Shut up!" the first girl snapped, "I've known Demetri way longer than that bitch! I should be his mate!"

"Brittany just let it go." Another woman said with a sigh.

"Like hell I will," Brittany spat, "I'm going to prove to everyone here that she doesn't belong in this world!" If I was human right now I'd probably be in tears. Taking a deep breath I continued to walk down the hall. Brittany's words were painful, but true. Even if I'm a vampire now I'm still worlds away from Demetri. He, and everyone here, wouldn't hesitate to kill someone. I could never kill a person though it's just not in my nature. Feeling very depressed I returned to Demetri's room and stayed there for the rest of the day.

The next day I reluctantly left the safety of Demetri's room and went to the garden. I sat down on a bench under a large tree and continued to read the book I started last night.

"Hay you." I froze as I recognized the snobby voice of that girl Brittany. Taking a breath I looked up to see a tall Burnett standing in front of me with two other girls right behind her. The girl on her right has short blonde hair and the girl on her left has long black hair. All three looked like women you'd see in a Victoria's secret fashion show.

Well goodbye self confidence...

"Umm hello?" I said trying to smile at them. The Brittany girl crossed her arms and glared at me.

"Scarlett right?"

"Yes." I replied while standing up trying to keep the smile on my face.

"I'll make this simple for you to understand," she said in a snobby tone, "break up with Demetri and leave Volterra." My smile dropped and my eyebrows knitted together in confusion.

"Umm what?" I asked and she rolled her eyes.

"Did you not hear me or are you just stupid?" she snapped, "you're out of Demetri's league so get lost."

"I understood you," I replied a little nervously, "but my relationships with Demetri won't change. I love him." The three glared daggers at me making me take a step away from them.

"H-Hay I don't want to fight." I stuttered. Brittany took a step closer to me while placing her hands on her hips.

"Then get-" she stopped mid sentence and the three looked completely petrified as they looked at something behind me. Suddenly I felt an arm wrap around my waist and was pushed behind a familiar person as they shielded me from the three vampires.

"M-Master Alec," Brittany stuttered looking like a deer caught in headlights.

"Her life is more valuable than the three of you combined here in Volterra," Alec hissed, "now leave before I kill you." The three girls quickly ran off and I let out a long breath as I buried my face into Alec's back.

"What the hell was that?!" Alec growled as he quickly turned around to face me making me take a step back.

"Huh?" I said in confusion while he crossed his arms and glared at me with black eyes.

"You don't want to fight?" he hissed, "Scarlett this world is about kill or be killed!" I bit my lip and looked down at the ground.

"Well I-I" I stuttered feeling his eyes on me.

"Well what?" he hissed, "you should've defended yourself instead of back down. Backing down will get you killed! Demetri can't always protect you. If I didn't show up just now you'd be dead!"

"Now, now," Aro's voice came from behind me and in the next second I felt his hands rest on my shoulders; "try not to be too tough on the child Alec; she's only been here for a couple days and is struggling."

'I feel like a child stuck between two bickering parents.' I thought as I stood there looking at the ground.

"Sorry master." Alec muttered before I heard him walk off.

"I'm sorry." I muttered while looking at the ground.

"You have nothing to apologize for Scarlett," Aro responded and I look up to see him smiling kindly, "I had a feeling you wouldn't be a violet vampire. Now go enjoy yourself." With that he walked back into the castle and I ran back to Demetri's room to hide for the rest of the day.

Three days later I was sitting on the couch in Demetri's room reading not wanting to leave. Alec came to visit every now and then but he couldn't stay for long because of his 'duties.' I jumped a little when my cell started to ring and picked it up to see Demetri's name.

"Hay" I said a little too loudly and he chuckled.

"Miss me already little Scarlett?" he teased and I bit my lip to keep from answering truthfully.

"Um," I said after a brief moment of silence, "when are you coming home?" now there was silence on his end.

"Well I've already contacted Aro about this." He kid of muttered and I froze.

"About what?" I asked feeling very upset.

"Just need to do some investigation," he replied and I sighed, "I'll only be another week then I'll be back."

"Good luck." I said trying to remind myself that he's just doing his job.

"I've got to go now," he said, "I love you." Before I could respond he hung up.

"Love you too." I muttered feeling lonely. After a while of just staring at my phone I walked out of the room to find Jane or Alec. I was passing by the throne room when I heard arguing. Curiously, I stepped into the room to see Jane and Alec standing toe to toe glaring each other down as they argued.

"Dear Scarlett what brings you here?" Aro asked standing up from his seat looking tired. Marcus and Caius were in a corner talking quietly as they ignored the arguing twins.

"Um is everything ok?" I asked as I sent a worried look towards the twins.

"Just a small disagreement," he smiled, "nothing to trouble yourself over." I bit my lip and looked back at the two as they continued to argue in some ancient language.

"Um Alec, Jane," I said stepping up to them, "I don't know what this is about but I think it's gone on long enough." They didn't hear me. Instead they continued to argue neither one backing down.

"Um guys," I said again placing a hand on both their arms, "I think you should calm down." The second I was finished speaking they stopped arguing and their tense postures relaxed and they both looked at me with confused expressions.

"How did you do that?" Alec asked as the three ancients walked up to us.

"Do what?" I asked in confusion watching Aro take Alec's hand for a brief second.

"She has a gift." Aro muttered and all eyes were on me .
