I apologize for not posting for like three weeks again. Here's a chapter to make up for it.
Well, this is it. Thought Tori. She was waiting at the Los Angeles International Airport, or LAX, for Martin and Ron to get off their flight. It was less than 24 hours away from when she would confront Jenny, along with Jade, Todd, Martin, and Ron.
She glanced at her phone.
Martin – We're going to be on flight 271. It lands at 11:00. We'll be at the south gate.
Tori looked at the time. 10:57. Right about now (assuming everything went as scheduled), Martin and Ron would be checking their bags out and heading for the gate. Tori looked around and spotted two men walking towards her. One was fairly tall, probably standing at around 6'4". The other was much more average sized, most likely standing somewhere in the vicinity of 5'11". The taller of the two had brown hair (which was receding), a mustache, and black frame Buddy Holly-style glasses.
That one is definitely Martin.
The other one had gray hair, combed back in a very organized manor. His face was free of facial hair and corrective lenses.
…And that one is Ron.
Tori drove towards the two of them. She rolled down the window and spoke to them.
"Martin? Ron?"
"Tori?"
Tori smiled and nodded. Martin got into the passenger seat and Ron got into the back seat.
"So, Tori, what's the plan?" asked Martin as the three of them drove away.
"Plan?"
"Yeah, what exactly did we fly down here for?" Ron questioned.
"Well, tomorrow we're going to go to Jenny's house and we're going to confront her. The original plan was just to have Todd – Jade's dad – talk some sense into her, but I figured that wouldn't be enough. So, I tracked the two of you down, and we're going to surprise Jenny tomorrow."
"Okay, that makes sense." Replied Martin.
"Where are we going to stay?" asked Ron.
"Oh, don't worry, I booked us a hotel ahead of time." Martin quickly responded.
"Really? Good thinking."
"It's why you love me."
"It is. It is."
They drove in silence for a little while.
"So Martin," Tori asked, breaking the silence, "What exactly happened after you left Cattlesborough?"
"That's kind of a loaded question. More of a story than an answer, really."
"Tell it."
"Okay. What do you already know?"
"I know that you left home on your 18th birthday and never came back. You carved 'Fuck You, Lionel' into the wall."
"Alright, lemme think… okay. So, when I left town, I didn't know where to go exactly. For a few years, I just wandered around the country, saving up money. I went to all kinds of cities. I actually remember the order I went to them in. It's a gift."
"And a curse." Ron added.
"Ha ha. Let's see… I went to Charleston, Raleigh, Richmond, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Albany, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Des Moines, St. Louis, Kansas City, Little Rock, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Austin, El Paso, Albuquerque, Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Portland, and I eventually ended up in Seattle."
"Wow." Said Tori. "I can't believe you remember that."
"He never forgets anything." Ron said. "I mean anything. He still holds a grudge against me because I lost my wedding ring last year."
"I still haven't completely forgiven you for that, either."
"Aww. Did you find it?"
"Yeah, eventually," replied Martin, "Anyways, on with the story. We've still got time. So, I ended up in Seattle. By this time it was 1991, I think. Something like that. I had basically given up on my dream to be an engineer. But, as luck would have it, I met a man named Billy Baldwin. Billy had inherited a substantial amount of money from his late aunt. He was a brilliant businessman, and wanted to get into the research, manufacturing, and sale of new chemical compounds. The problem is, he needed chemists, and he needed to be sure they weren't going to leave the company in favor of a larger one. So, I became the first one he recruited. How? He agreed to pay my tuition for a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Seattle. It's a decent school, and I enjoyed going there. While I was enrolled, I worked part time for Billy. When I finished my degree, I started working full time. Believe me, Billy Baldwin made a lot of money off of my work. I'm talking multiple millions of dollars, just himself."
"Wow, it looks like he made a good call when he hired you."
"Yup. In 2005 he sold the company to 3M for three billion dollars, and retired to a life of luxury. Me, I went to work for 3M, who still employ me to this day. Back to the nineties, though. In 1996, I met Ron. We hit it off pretty well. A year later he moved in with me, in 2007 we became domestic partners, and in 2012 we got married."
"Ron, what do you do?" Tori asked.
"I'm an accountant. I know, surprising. What's even more surprising is that I'm actually a veteran, too. I fought in the Gulf War. It's funny, 'cause I only joined the Army so I could pay for accounting school. Lo and behold, two years after doing that, Iraq invades Kuwait and I'm shipped off to fight. When I got back I finished school, quit the Army, and here I am."
"Huh." Said Tori. She thought for a while after that.
There you go. I figured I should give Martin and Ron a little more back story so I don't just plop them in the middle of the story and make them confront Jenny without any real substance.
For those of you on the Metric System (as I always give the conversions), 6'4" is 1.93 meters, and 5'11" is 1.8 meters.
And as always, remember to follow, favorite, and review. I noticed that someone added this to a community recently. That was nice.
Until next time,
