Before I start this new story I want to make something clear so I will capitalize and underscore for emphasis. THIS IS NOT A PLAGIARIZED VERSION OF SkyleafAlchemist19'S All That Remains! I have already spoken to her prior to posting this, and she has given me permission to use the assassin aspect of her story for mine! DO NOT I repeat DO NOT review this only to flame and accuse me of plagiarizing her story! She is ready to speak out on this issue if it does happen, and I thank her so much for doing so! The ONLY aspects of this story that will be the same is the assassin theme, and the use of the name Esgal as Legolas' alias, which she has also given me permission to use! So please dear readers, DO NOT POST REVIEWS ACCUSING ME OF PLAGIARIZING WHEN I HAVE CLEARLY EXPLAINED MYSELF IN THIS LITTLE SECTION!

Inspired by: SkyleafAlchemist19's All That Remains and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

War I

The doors of the throne room opened up at that moment before Thranduil could respond to his son's decree. Hethurin ran inside rather frantically, prompting the royal family to look up in confusion.

"What is the matter?" Lalaith rushed over.

"My lord Thranduil, I have received word that Thorin Oakenshield and his company have arrived in Erebor," the Ellon huffed.

At this the Elvenking straightened himself up automatically and bore a cold expression on his face.

"Arastor, Hethurin, prepare the army for war. We leave at dawn for the Lonely Mountains."

Arodeth's expression was one of shock.

"Ada why are you going to war with the Dwarves!?" she exclaimed.

"There are jewels within that mountain that Thror once withheld from me, a late memento of my first wife."

"The gems of Lasgalen?" Lalaith asked quietly.

Thranduil gave a nod.

"But to go to war over this?" the elder exclaimed.

Thranduil looked at his son and gave a wave of his hand. Arastor bowed and quickly left the room with Hethurin trailing behind.

"I will come back to you all," Thranduil murmured as he hugged his daughters.

Elrond watched as the goblet tumbled from the Elf's hand and clattered on the ground, spilling the water all over the ground. Judging from his reaction, the Peredhel's deduction must be correct. This Ellon before him is indeed Thranduil's lost son Legolas.

"I am not this Legolas you speak of," the latter finally replied.

"What is your name?"

"I am Esgal."

"Tell me Esgal, where did you come from? In all the years I have lived on Middle-Earth, I have never come across a spell like the one that binds your body."

Esgal shifted on the bed and slowly pushed himself up into a sitting position.

"I do not know where I am from. The only thing I know of is I was raised in Dol Guldur and trained as the Witch-King's champion."

The Peredhel paced the room slowly.

"Then why are you not by your master's side? Why did you save the Lady Galadriel earlier if you are the Witch-King's champion? Do you not fear repercussions for your actions?"

Silence.

"If you do not wish to answer then I will not push you. You may rest here until your strength has returned," Elrond left the room after that.

Galadriel was waiting on the other side of the door when the Peredhel emerged.

"Is he?"

"I suspect he is indeed Thranduil Oropherion's lost son Legolas," Elrond answered.

"Then he has survived living in Dol Guldur. He may know something of the enemy."

"I have tried asking but he has not revealed anything."

The Lady of the Woods beckoned for Elrond to follow and the two of them were soon lost in a deep conversation.

Now that Elrond was gone from the room, Legolas swung his legs over the side of the bed and tugged on his boots. Once he was dressed in his tunic, the assassin glanced around and found his weapons lying by the side of the window. He grabbed these and surveyed the outside.

There was not a soul in sight.

With a graceful leap he landed on the nearby tree and quickly made his way out of the golden woods. Something was drawing him back to Dol Guldur and he needed to return in case the Witch-King suspected he was up to something. Then there was also the matter of his brother that required his attention.

Pushing these thoughts out of his head, Legolas made for the direction of the Black Fortress.

Bilbo could not believe what he was seeing.

Erebor.

After the perilous journey from the Shire all the way across half of Middle-Earth, they had finally arrived at their destination. If it weren't for his thinking, Thorin and the others would have left and never noticed that Durin's light meant the moonlight.

After Thorin inserted the key and unsealed the entrance, he was then asked to retrieve the Arkenstone from inside. At first he was afraid, but after finding a ring from a strange creature called Gollum that rendered him invisible, the Hobbit put it on and crept around unseen.

However he should have known that the nose of a dragon couldn't be fooled so easily.

During his search for the Arkenstone, Smaug had awoken and breathed fire around the entire chamber. Thankfully Bilbo was quick on his feet and managed to retrieve the stone without being burned or melted. Yet something told him to keep it hidden from Thorin for the time being.

Unfortunately his actions only brought a calamity upon the citizens of Lake-town as Smaug laid waste to the watery village.

"What are we going to do now?" Balin asked in shock, watching as the town began to burn and smoke.

Thorin simply turned heel and went inside the Lonely Mountain wordlessly.

"Are we just going to leave them? Fili and the others are down there!" Bilbo protested.

"They will make it back to us. I trust them," Balin said.

The Hobbit was speechless at this but he knew venturing down there would only be crazy. They had no means of fighting Smaug and Thorin got what he came for. The only thing he could do was follow the others inside Erebor and pray that someone will take care of the dragon.

Legolas was nearing the border to Mirkwood when he picked up the sounds of footsteps in the distance. Pulling on Hagalith's reigns to stop his companion, the assassin got off and crouched behind several bushes to conceal himself. Peering out over the top, he saw a battalion of Elves clad in golden armor, all bearing bows and swords upon their backs.

Swiftly pulling himself up into one of the nearby trees, he swung from branch to branch until he was in front of the army and noticed Thranduil leading them, riding upon the back of an elk and also dressed in armor.

Mirkwood was going to war.

But with whom?

Pulling up the hood over his head, Legolas leaped down from the tree and stood in front of his father's steed. The elk gave a cry of shock but Thranduil expertly kept control of the beast.

"Who goes there?" Arastor demanded, drawing his sword immediately.

Thranduil recognized his son and stopped the army.

"Wait here," he ordered.

"But-"

"I said wait," Thranduil repeated more sternly and got off his elk.

The assassin turned and disappeared into the forest with Thranduil following suit.

"Ada you are going to war?" Legolas asked the moment they were safe from view from the others.

"Legolas I am glad to see you ion nin," Thranduil pulled his son in for a warm embrace.

"Who are you fighting? You cannot hope to fight the darkness of Dol Guldur alone!"

The Elvenking shook his head.

"Thorin has reclaimed the Lonely Mountains. There is something there that belongs to me, and I am going there to retrieve it."

"What could possibly be valuable enough for you to mobilize your entire army?"

"Jewels belonging to your late mother," Thranduil said softly.

Legolas froze slightly.

"Is it worth it? Going to war over jewels?"

"Yes. Thror denied me the jewels once, I will not walk away without them this time."

"Azog the Defiler will be there. You must take precautions against the Orc. The Witch-King has given him permission to wipe out Thorin's company, and I am sure Azog will have another plan to crush him."

Thranduil's expression hardened.

"Do not worry my little greenleaf. Your father has fought through many wars."

"You should return before Arastor sends a search party for you," Legolas suggested when he heard leaves rustling in the distance.

"Stay safe my son. Guren níniatha n'i lû n'i a-govenitham," Thranduil said.

The assassin swallowed several times and gave a nod, then disappeared as his father watched on silently.

"May the Valar protect you," the Elvenking murmured.
