Chapter 37—Slug Hunt!
"Are you guys ready for the slug hunt?" Leo asked us the morning of the slug hunt.
"Yep. You?" I replied, pulling on my beanie.
"Absolutely!" he replied. We walked to the main room of Shane Hall, where almost everyone in the building was waiting.
"Hey, guys!" Mark said when he saw us. We walked over to where he and the others were standing.
"So, are you guys looking for any slugs in particular?" Nathan, our RA, asked us as he walked up to us.
"Nope, just a slug I don't have yet," we all replied at once.
He nodded and called for everyone's attention.
"Hey!" he squealed after several failed attempts. "Everyone in my wing, please come with me!" he called. About a quarter of us went after him and got onto our Mechas once outside.
"We're going two caverns north of here," he told us. "Those of you taking Advanced Slugslinging courses, please stick to the outside of the group for protection!"
We nodded and left Bullseye Cavern, going north until we reached a cavern I hadn't visited before.
"Okay, we will meet back here in exactly ninety minutes, start your timers, and have fun!" he reminded us. We all nodded and took off in different directions, looking for new slugs.
"Have you found any new slugs yet?" Leo asked me when he saw me.
"Nope, not yet," I replied. "You?"
"Nada," he said before leaving to chase after a slug he saw.
"Hello!" I called after an hour of unsuccessful searching. "Are there any slugs that want to join my team?"
"How about me?" I heard a small voice ask.
"Where are you, little guy?" I asked the slug. He sounded very young.
"Down here!" he chirped back. I looked down and saw a small Jellyish on the ground beside me.
"Hey there, little guy!" I said, lowering my hand to him.
"Hi! Are you the Shane I've heard about?" he asked me.
"Maybe. I'm Jacob Shane," I explained, lifting him to eye level.
"That's you, then!" he said, hopping onto my shoulder.
"Good to have you on the team," I replied. "How does the name 'Splat' sound?" I asked him.
"Sounds great!" he replied. He jumped into my backpack so that all of my slugs could welcome him.
I looked around for the rest of the time, but didn't find any other slugs so I returned to the point we were supposed to be at.
"What slugs did you guys get?" I asked the others when I saw them.
"I found these two fellas," Emma said, holding up a Grenuke and Lavalynx.
"Nice to meet you guys," I said to the slugs. They waved and jumped into slug tubes as Mark held up a Bubbaleone and Frostcrawler and Luke showed me his new Aquabeek and Blastipede.
"I found an Xmitter," Leo added, showing me the slug. "What did you find?"
"I added a Jellyish to my team," I told them, holding out Splat.
"Aw, he's so cute!" Emma squealed. "He looks so much like Slimer!" she added, referring to her Jellyish.
"Aw, thanks!" Splat replied, hopping into a tube.
The group was about to return to Bullseye Cavern when we felt a strong cold chill.
"I've got a feeling that something bad's about to happen," I muttered to myself before hitting the throttle and launching myself toward Bullseye Cavern, my friends following close behind.
"What's wrong?" Leo asked me as he caught up.
"I've got a bad feeling," I told him. My fears were confirmed when we got to Bullseye Cavern.
"Oh my…" I whispered when I saw the SU campus.
It was completely frozen over.
