Chapter 36
What Happened to Ginny Weasley
Nymphadora Tonks was one of the few Aurors on the Christmas shift. The others were mostly those who had red marks on their role so were like Tonks given the worst jobs although there was one properly qualified one so that on the off chance something serious did pop up she'd be able to deal with it. Tonks had been forced into it not because of anything she had done but due to being a trainee so given the jobs that nobody else wanted.
Tonks couldn't blame them. If Tonks had a choice she would be at home with her mother and father. It wasn't like anything important was going to happen on Christmas. Usually they had multiple domestics from Christmas arguments, a few children using magic when they shouldn't have due to their parents being lax, or stressed or drunk but usually they were given a warning unless it was a second time where they would be tried for underage magic in front of a panel from the Improper Use of Magic headed by Mafalda Hopkirk.
For the seventeenth time that day the Trace went on at yet another child. Tonks had always noticed that it was the half-bloods and so called blood traitors because Muggle-borns weren't stupid enough to do magic outside school and their parents didn't let them. The pure blood elite children tended to have an illegal second wand and were ensconced in powerful wards that the Ministry could not detect anything behind so they could practice magic outside school without getting in trouble so were usually far advanced to the other children which stroked their egos.
Tonks found it at the end of the eleven year old's orbs a Weasley, Ginevra Molly. Tonks however froze when she realised what the magic that had been used had been. Why would a light witch from a good family be using magic like that?
Crucio
Tonks checked and double checked but no the spell didn't change. It looked like she was going to call over Deborah, Deb, Young the one most qualified to deal with Unforgivables. Tonks made sure to take the scroll that listed the underaged magic performed.
'Ma'am, we've got a report of an Unforgivable being fired,' Tonks said.
'Are you sure!?' Young said sharply.
Tonks pushed the scroll with the name, age, spell and location of underaged magic. Young's steel eyes darkened to the colour of granite. She grabbed her black Auror battle robes. Tonks' own battle robes were at her desk not expecting to be called out on a mission she was in the official Auror royal blue robes with a red hems showing she was trainee which was used when they were on display.
'Get your robes, Trainee Tonks,' snapped Young.
'Yes, ma'am,' Tonk said.

At the Burrow, Bill was ignoring his mother's nagging that he had had enough to drink. The younger children were in bed whilst Charlie, Bill and Arthur had a Christmas drink much to their mother's disgust. Molly had pointed out nine times that there were children sleeping upstairs.
That was when the door went crashing down which sobered up the men quickly not that they were drunk more tipsy. Bill even with his reactions dimmed was too used to explosions at work to not instantly pull out his wand. Looking around it seemed his parents and brother had done the same although he suspected that for his parents it was remembered reflexes from the war.
Then he realised that it was the metamorphagus from his brother's year who had gone into the Aurors. Arthur had realised the same thing and lowered his wand gesturing for Molly to do the same. Charlie shot him a confused look at why a trainee Auror had blasted her way into their Christmas celebrations.
'What's going on?' demanded Molly shrilly.
'Since when do the Aurors invade homes of innocent witches and wizards?' Arthur said for once angry.
'When an Unforgivable has been cast,' the grey haired Auror grimly.
Bill watched as both his parents went shocking white. Bill was ten when the war had ended although he remembered his parents being scared a lot and the grief surrounding everyone his parents had always protected him from the worst of it and as a pure-blood whose parents although blood traitors were not involved in the war he couldn't understand his parents fear of the unforgivables. The most exposure to them he had previously was the knowledge that his uncle had been killed by the Death Eaters who favoured the Unforgivables.
'Where is Miss Ginevra Weasley?!' demanded the grey haired woman.
'Ginny,' moaned Bill's mother.
Charlie was quick to go to his mother much to Bill and his father's relief. Bill wasn't going to let go of his wand until he found out what had happened and how his baby sister was involved. Molly, however, brushed off Charlie and left the room at a run obviously to find her daughter.
The two Aurors rushed after her obviously not wanting a civilian to encounter whatever had alerted them to Unforgivables being used in their home. Bill, Charlie and their father ran after them which naturally woke up the younger siblings.
'Bill,' a sleepy Ron said. 'Why's everyone being so noisy?'
'You lot back in your room,' Dad said.
'What's happened!?' demanded Fred.
Fred and George had seen that look before on their friends' face when the troll had been revealed to be present and a few other times when trouble was afoot. It meant that there was danger about. It was natural that they were being sent away from the scene but their hearts stopped when the two unknown woman overtook their mother to get to Ginny's room.
'What's happened to Ginny?' demanded Fred.
Bill shared a look with his father who seemed to have no idea what to say to his four sons. Fred and George, however, took after their mother and the aurors before anything else could be said. Percy and Ron followed leaving Bill and Arthur to be the last into Ginny's room.
The room was a mess; it looked like a battle scene with conjured granite looking out of place in the wooden room. In the middle of the room was a sight that made Bill's heart stop. Ginny was lying pale and cold on the floor whilst the grey haired Auror worked over her as Tonks had her arms around Bill's mother to stop her from going to her daughter.
'LET ME GO! LET ME GET TO MY DAUGHTER! GINNY! GINNY!
'Please, Mrs Weasley, Auror Young needs to examine your daughter,' Tonks was saying. 'Mr Weasley maybe you should take her out of her and contact Saint Mungo's.'
Arthur shaken dragged a protesting Molly Weasley out of their daughter's room. Tonks was now trying to herd the rest of the Weasleys out of Ginny's room which was now a crime scene. Bill gulped what had happened which made Ginny think that she needed to use an Unforgivable?
How did she even know such magic!?
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Molly, Arthur and the two Aurors met with Healer Johnson who was in charge of treating their daughter. The two Aurors had asked their permission to be present so that they could know when they were able to talk to Ginny. Arthur knew they meant question her for the Unforgivable use, but neither he nor they said anything on that matter.
As he didn't want the healers distracted or asked about it later he let them stay. He knew their precious daughter would never willingly cast an Unforgivable. Arthur had mentioned Unforgivables but Arthur didn't think he'd ever described how to do one. At least he hoped not or he would be the only one to blame if his daughter was carted off to Azkaban.
'Your daughter seems to be physically fine,' Healer Johnson. 'We have placed Miss Weasley in a magical coma for the present.'
'I thought you said she was okay,' Arthur said more angrily than he meant it due to stress and worry over his only daughter.
'Physically,' Healer Johnson reminded them.
Johnson didn't say anything about Arthur's short temper. The healer had probably seen it all too often in the families of their patients. Arthur himself hadn't felt this much worry since the war which filled him with even more dread.
He didn't want to know what his wife was feeling who had carried and went through a traumatic birth with Ginny to be advised against having any more children. It was why Ginny had always got everything she wanted. She was the first Weasley girl to be born in six generations and they had almost lost her before they even knew her.
'But there is evidence of unknown, long-term Dark Magic upon her,' explained Healer Johnson.
'Is it possible that she has Controlling or Compulsion spells on her?' asked Auror Young.
'It's quite possible,' agreed Healer Johnson.
'With your permission we're going to request a Dark Arts Specialist has a look at her,' Healer Johnson said looking at the red haired parents.
'Will she be okay?' asked Molly tearily.
Healer Johnson gave them a sharp look, 'we won't know until we know what has been done to her. Or what she has done to herself.'
Healer Johnson hated implying this but she couldn't say for certain what had happened before An looked at the girl. In these cases she had to prepare the parents for the worst that she might have been acting on her own or she might have been controlled. There wasn't really a winner in this case.
If she had been acting on her own then she was probably going to be up before the Wizengamot for use of an Unforgivable due to her age it would probably mean re-education programme and community service but it would be on her records for the rest of her life. If she had been under long term control then they'd have to try and remove whatever controlled her in the first place. Sometimes only the victim could do that and if they couldn't she'd have to be on life support until a time (if ever) that she threw off the controller or the controlled died (sometimes not even then).
'Who are we talking about?' asked Auror Young.
'Healer An Dong who often works as an advisor to the Ministry in cases such as this,' Johnson replied to the Auror.
Auror Young nodded seemingly pleased with this filling Arthur and Molly with hope. The Auror clearly had experience if this Dark Arts expert met her approval it meant this healer had had success before with past cases. Of course, almost all Dark Arts was brought in front of the DMLE eventually.
'How long before she'll be fit to talk?' asked Tonks.
Young gave the young woman a sharp reprimanding look. Obviously this wasn't a place to ask such things with an unknown outcome for the young girl and her terrified parents' in the room. Arthur had enough knowledge to know this.
'As I said before it will depend on what Healer Dong says,' repeated Johnson.
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Percy was pacing outside the hospital room where there sister was being looked at. Ron's freckles stood out against his pale skin as he collapsed to the floor as Bill tried to comfort him. The twins looked like statues. Charlie was scowling and glared threateningly at anyone who passed.
Barely half an hour had passed but already it seemed like an age had passed. Their parents had been called in to talk to the healers ten minutes ago and hadn't returned making everyone more nervous as time passed. Fred was becoming increasingly worried.
'Mum,' Ron said spotting their parents.
The whole family clamoured around their parents as the two healers stood back slightly allowing the children the comfort that they desperately needed from their parents. Mr and Mrs Weasley tried to calm their children down. The two Aurors stood back waiting for news of their suspect's condition so that they could question her.
'This is Healer Dong, a specialist, and Healer Johnson, her healer, who is going to examine Ginny,' Molly said. 'I would like you to wait out here whilst they do their work. Bill and Charlie will you look after them.'
'Of course, mum,' Charlie said quickly.
Bill just nodded. Fred wondered when everything had gone so wrong. Just hours ago they had said goodbye to Harry, Cat, Eve, her father, Nathanael and his father. And now they had no idea what was going to happen to Ginny.
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Molly was in the hospital room as the specialist healer began performing spells on her daughter. Molly ached to rush to her daughter and wrap her in her arms and never let ago. It was only Arthur's strong arms around her and the knowledge that she would be endangering her daughter which stopped it.
The Aurors had been left outside with the children. The young Auror had asked Molly and Arthur if they would like her to take the children for something to do but they had thrown up a fuss. They didn't want to leave in case news came whilst they were away.
Healer Dong's dark brown eyes darkened making Molly grown. Her daughter was going to be in a magical coma for the rest of her life. Molly felt tears well in her eyes. It couldn't end like this; it just couldn't.
'Administer Purging Potion,' Healer Dong shot at the mediwizard. 'Mr, Mrs Weasley can we talk in my office. I'd advise that you bring the Aurors with you.'
'Is she going to be alright?' asked Arthur gulping.
'She should be fine,' Healer Johnson said, 'but the rest should be said in the office. The Aurors have to be informed whether with you or after I've finished talking to you.'
'They can be present,' sighed Arthur.
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
'There is evidence of Soul Magic around your daughter,' Healer Dong wasted no time saying.
'Soul magic?' asked Deborah Young, 'I thought Soul Magic was Light.'
'It depends what type,' admitted Healer Dong. 'Soul Bondings are Light. However, what I think we're dealing with is Horcruxes.'
'Horcruxes?' asked Deborah Young.
'I'm not surprise you've never heard of them. I've never seen one but the hallmarks are all there,' sighed Healer Dong. 'Horcruxes are parts of one's soul that has been broken off by a ritual tying you to the mortal realm.'
'Immortality?' hissed Deborah Young.
Healer Dong nodded, 'indeed.'
'But what has that got do with my daughter?' demanded Arthur.
'The soul fragment is contained within an object. It is usually confined but it has been known in historical tomes to be able to move out through the use of a … host,' Healer Dong said.
'GINNY!' screeched Molly.
'I take it that she was being controlled when the Unforgivable was cast?' asked Young.
'I'd say almost definitely,' agreed Healer Dong. 'It is likely she's been forced to do the Horcrux's agenda for many months as the exposure is long.
'How long?' asked Arthur tensely.
'Over a month but less than a year,' Healer Dong said. 'I'm afraid I cannot say more precisely than that.'
'Is there anything that can be done for Miss Weasley?' asked Healer Dong.
'Ah,' Healer Dong.
'No,' sobbed Molly.
'Actually, the soul fragment has already been removed,' Healer Dong.
'How?' asked Deborah Young.
'I cannot say,' admitted Healer Dong. 'You have to understand that Horcruxes are very rare. I specialised in treating Dark Arts victims for sixty years and I have never heard of anyone encountering even one.'
'Why?' asked Auror Young.
'Many reasons,' Healer Dong. 'Nowadays it is illegal to hold books, tomes or scrolls of such magic outside of the Department of Mysteries. When I was studying it was not which is why I'm aware of it. Then there is the fact that to tear you soul you need to commit murder. And the ritual is abhorrent no one with a shred of decency would even contemplate such horrendous deeds.'
'But it's gone,' Molly asked. 'She's going to be okay.'
Healer Dong, 'she should be absolutely fine. 'I'll keep her in until the residual Dark Magic has been purged.'
'How long will she be out?' asked Auror Deborah Young wondering when she was going to be able to interview Ginny Weasley.
'It will depend how quickly the purging potion works; different people respond to it differently,' explained Healer Dong. 'I'll check the Dark Magic levels in an hour but I'd suggest you search through Miss Weasley's belongings to see if the Horcrux is still present. As I said I am not sure whether it is possible to fight off the possession but considering that Miss Weasley performed an Unforgivable it is likely that there was a fight to relieve her from the possession.'
'Who could do that?' asked Auror Young.
'A few who still follow the Druidic ways,' Healer Dong said, 'apart from that but it's those who follow older magics and have talents with soul magic.'
'So she'll make a full recovery?' Arthur checked.
'I believe so,' assured Healer Dong.
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Auror Young had called in back up from the Office and after explaining the situation she, the young trainee who she had words about respecting victim and suspect's families, and the backup began tearing apart the crime scene. Deborah had made sure it was those who were there because they had no one to spend it with. Not because they were in trouble because she had no patience for those lost causes many of them only still employed because of family connections.
It was Adrian Anghelescu whose family were all in Romania meaning if he didn't travel to Romania for Christmas he would be spending Christmas alone. It was just a small, black book with T.M Riddle in gold letters. At the moment the Unspeakable were scanning it against known criminal magical signatures.
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Amelia hated being woken up by work at all hours at the best of times but on Christmas night well technically boxing day but the point still stood. If it wasn't an emergency she was going to throttle someone. She checked in on Susan to make sure she was okay before Flooing off.
'Amelia,' nodded Croaker.
'This better be important,' Amelia snapped.
'It is,' Croaker said grimly. 'I wouldn't have been called in if it wasn't.'
The next ten minutes Amelia was filled in on what had happened earlier tonight. Croaker was just getting to the finding of the Horcrux when he stopped. It took a minute for Amelia to realise that he was scared.
'Whose magical signature?' asked Amelia.
'Voldemort's,' Croaker said grimly.
Amelia felt the broomstick tugged out from underneath her. No wonder she had been called in. It did explains what had been going on these past few months. Ginny Weasley had been possessed to attack her students explaining this to her parents was going to be a nightmare.
'Is this the only way of telling if this is the only Horcrux?' demanded Amelia.
'There is no way to tell,' sighed Croaker. 'I doubt he'd have told even his closest of ally's what this is.'
Amelia nodded, 'now how am I going to explain this to Mr and Mrs Weasley,' then she shook her head. 'No the less people who know the truth the better. I'll interview Miss Weasley myself to get a better idea what we are facing.'
X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X-X
Arthur and Molly had sent their sleepy sons home with Bill in charge with orders that they get some sleep despite that neither of them had slept. Ginny was sleeping peacefully and they had been told that she had been taken off the sleeping potions as the Purging Potions had done their job. Molly had never been more relieved.
Amelia Bones herself entered. The fact that the Head of DMLE was here filled Arthur with dread. Whoever the Horcrux belonged to was someone of high enough profile that the head of the DMLE was directly involved.
'I've been informed that your daughter could wake up at any time,' Amelia said cutting straight to the point.
Arthur nodded, 'yes.'
'After the healer clears her would it be possible for me to interview her?' asked Amelia.
'She's not in any trouble?' asked Molly worriedly.
'No,' Amelia reassured. 'Whatever she did whilst possessed was not her fault. I would advise you to keep quiet about the truth for the good of everyone. Naturally the healers will know and she'll be able to see a therapist if she wishes but I think it would be better for your family and the general public if the truth wasn't know.'
'You know who it was?' Arthur asked.
'WHO?' demanded Molly.
'I am afraid I cannot say at this present time,' Amelia replied.
'IT'S MY DAUGHTER!' screeched Molly.
'Mum,' said a drowsy voice awakening at the sound of the argument. 'What happened? Where am I? Why is the head of the DMLE here!?' she squeaked.
'Oh Ginny,' Molly almost cried not answering any of the questions. 'How are you feeling?'
'Tired,' admitted Ginny. 'Where am I?'
'St. Mungo's,' Arthur sighed.
'Why am I here!?' squeaked Ginny.
'It's a long story,' Arthur said tiredly.
They hadn't noticed that Amelia had left until she came back with Healer Dong who immediately began scanning and giving Ginny a full check over. After that was done he smiled at the girl. Arthur breathed a sigh of relief.
'She'll be fine. Do you want anything to eat?' asked Healer Dong.
After a fearful glance at Amelia Bones Ginny shook her head clearly too frightened of the head of the DMLE to even consider it. Arthur wondered how much Ginny remembered of the possession. Did she feel responsible for whatever the Horcrux had done? Whatever it was it wasn't her fault! No more than Imperius victims perhaps even less.
'No thank you,' Ginny said more timidly than Arthur had ever heard his brave little girl sound.
'Would you mind answering a few questions?' asked Amelia.
'No,' squeaked Ginny showing on her face that she in fact did mind!
'When did you come in possession of the diary of T.M. Riddle?' asked Amelia.
'I found it in my Transfiguration text book,' Ginny said.
'It was second hand,' Arthur put in.
'What did you do when you found it?' asked Amelia.
'I wanted to write in it,' admitted Ginny, 'I'd ran out of room in my old diary.'
Amelia nodded, 'of course. I quite understand. Then what happened?'
'It wrote back,' admitted Ginny. 'He was polite, charming and understanding. I began to write more and more.'
'Ginny!' Arthur said aghast. 'Haven't I told you not to trust something that thinks if you can't see where it puts it's brain. Why didn't you show me? An object like that is clearly full of Dark Magic!'
'I'm sorry dad,' Ginny said miserably. 'I didn't think.'
'It is quite alright Miss Weasley, you couldn't be expected to know that anything was wrong,' Amelia said. 'This is not your fault. Now can you tell me when you realised something was wrong.'
'It was after I got to Hogwarts where I found I had gaps in my memory,' Ginny stopped, 'I woke up in my dorms with blood on my robes and no clue how I got there. I found out later that someone had strangled the roosters.
'Then it happened again on Halloween. I woke up hungry in an alcove on the third floor with paint down my robes,' Ginny said her eyes flashing with guilt. 'I found out that night that Mrs Norris had been attacked by the Heir of Slytherin.
Arthur paled and shared a pained look with his wife. Arthur didn't need to hear the rest to know that it had been his daughter had been the one attacking students. No wonder the head of DMLE was here herself and why she wanted it kept quiet. All the world needed was the knowledge that You Know Who had obtained immortality.
'Am I going to Azkaban?' asked Ginny quietly.
'No,' assured the head of the DMLE.
'But I killed people,' Ginny said.
'No you did not,' reassured the woman. 'You were not responsible for this. You were being controlled by a possession of Voldemort's,' – the three Weasley's flinched – 'You are no more to blame than any other the victims of the Imperius curse. Get some rest. Mr Weasley do you have time for a word?'
'Yes, of course,' Arthur said following the woman outside. 'It was You Know Who.'
'Yes,' Amelia said even though it wasn't a question. 'Do you understand why we want Voldemort's immortality kept quiet?'
'Yes, of course,' Arthur said.
'I'd suggest she see a therapist for the guilt before she tries unhealthy coping mechanisms,' the woman said.
'Do you have any idea how she got hold of it?' asked Arthur.
'Apart from it being there when she bought it – no, I am sorry,' Amelia said. 'Was there any chance anyone could have slipped her it before she got home?'
'Lucius Malfoy, he taunted me with her second hand books,' Arthur said.
Bones nodded, 'I should warn you that it is unlikely that there will be any form of punishment should it turn out he is responsible with his connections but I will inform our American colleagues and we can do.'
'Thank you Madam Bones,' Arthur said as the woman left.

I have not yet decided how I'm going to deal with the Dementors but I had considered them being wraiths of some kind so Harry may have some kind of power over them. But Harry won't be able to produce a Patronus as his power comes from the Underworld and the Patronus comes from happiness and joy etc. Things with Dumbledore will be set up next year but he will not appear much in it (see if you can guess what he's going to be up to). If Lucius is caught it will be the Americans who deal with him due to his high placed position and the British Ministry's corruptness.
Harry is not destroying the pieces as that means you are stuck at Charon's for all eternity. Unable to enter the Underworld or able to go back to the land of living. Harry wants his mother's murderer punished so he is collecting the soul pieces until he has them all where he will send Charon to the Underworld as children of Hades are able to do this to those who should have died as Nico did with Daedulus (or however you spell it).

Yeah I'd actually forgot about the granite thanks for the reminder. Tom isn't fully dead. There will be no tribunal until all the Horcrux pieces and Voldemort himself have been sent to Tartarus.

Well there's this chapter obviously so it's not just going to end. There is going to be a book 3. I imagine Sirius would already know about the details behind the marriage as he is best friend's with Remus and James so will know that they were lovers but won't know about who Lily's lover and Harry's father was because Lily kept that close to the chest. It's debatable that James even knew before his death. Their relationship won't be the same because Harry is not James' son and Harry isn't looking for a father figure. However, it is possible that Sirius if he gets free might adopt Cat as his cousin's daughter and head of her house he would have rights to.
