Chapter 38 – Tryst
"I can't seem to remember our first date, Jack," Sam stated as they were sharing their evening meal.
"Of course you do, you had your turquoise bikini on, you told me about it already."
"No Jack, that was our first meeting and our first night together. What I mean is I can't remember our first tryst, did we watch a movie, eat in a restaurant, both?" Sam explained, raising a questioning eyebrow at her husband.
Jack settled against the back of the dining chair and sipped his wine as he recollected his memories, Sam hanging on his every word since she loved to hear him talk about their life together.
"I came to pick you up at the Pentagon after we reunited in D.C. I was wearing my dress blues that day, and so did you as you'd had an important meeting at work. An old friend was a curator at the National Air and Space Museum, and I pulled a few strings to ensure it would be closed to the public that particular evening. I obviously didn't know then how ironical it was to get you to manipulate lunar rocks: you were dreaming to be an astronaut and working on the Stargate made of Naquadah!"
Sam smiled as Jack mentioned the 'Gate, item oh-so-significant to the two of them even though they didn't know it at the time. Jack took another sip of the glistening ruby-colored wine.
"Anyway, we spent a wonderful evening lingering in the empty museum: there was no-one to push us or be impatient. The apex of our private tour was indubitably the Albert Einstein Planetarium. You seemed fascinated by everything I was telling you about all the exposed aircrafts and shuttles. Even though you are an actual pilot and astrophysicist, you still listened to me the whole evening. That's one of the things I love the most about you, your humility and your patience."
Sam managed a wobbly smile, her eyes filled with yet-unshed tears.
"Sam, honey?"
"I'm okay, it's just... your words are so touching..."
Jack got up and put his arm around Sam's shoulders.
"Please don't be upset! I love you, you love me, you should be smiling, not crying..."
"I... I sometimes feel like you love me so much more than I love you..."
"I don't think so. First off you can't measure love anyway, even when you're an astrophysicist! And last but not least, even if you can't remember, I receive as much love from you than you do from me, I am sure of it, so please stop thinking like that."
Jack gave Sam a soft kiss, that was well on its way to turn to heat, before he parted his lips from hers with great difficulty. He scooted his chair next to Sam's after taking his place at the table once more, holding Sam's hand as he continued to reminisce about their first date.
"Well, after your private guided tour at the Museum, I took you to my favorite restaurant in D.C., Le Chat Noir. Their menus are fabulous, and their wine list even more: we had a delicious Bordeaux, Haut-Médoc I believe, with our meal..."
"Cuisine et vin français?" Sam inquired in flawless French.
Jack nodded as Sam continued.
"Then you took me back to my apartment. I thought you'd decline spending the night with me, but you did end up staying... we weren't living together yet, were we?"
"You remember?" Jack flashed his wife a blinding smile.
"It looks like it, yeah! The next day you brought me breakfast in bed and ate it with me before I had to get ready for work. You accompanied me until the entrance of the Pentagon so as not to give up a single minute of our time together, and all my colleagues were so jealous!"
"Really? You never told me that!" Jack smirked.
Sam blushed and lowered her head, as Jack was distractedly rubbing soothing circles on the back of her hand with his thumb.
"They saw us arrive together, and since you were wearing your dress blues they submerged me with rapid-fire questions about you."
"And what did you tell them?"
"That it was top-secret!" Sam laughed.
"You felt it, then?"
"Of course, you were too mysterious to be a mere pilot..."
"Would you love me less if I were a mere pilot?"
"Of course not, my love for you would be exactly the same. I don't think you'd have reeled me in so easily without your rough and arrogant side, though."
"Arrogant? Who, me?" Jack exclaimed.
"The worst is you don't even realize it!" Sam answered with a smile.
Her smile was soft and sincere; Jack had missed it so, it would only make an appearance on special occasions... he knew exactly during these times why he loved her so much, and uninhibitedly too.
They spent the rest of the evening reminiscing some more before Sam retired to their longed-for bed, as the two-day shift had exhausted her. Jack would have preferred she did not go back to work so quickly, but Sam did enjoy being busy, and it helped her memories come back quicker too. He cleared the table and loaded the dishwasher before working on a few outstanding files before climbing the stairs to join his wife in their bedroom.
Jack found her lying on her stomach, her favorite position, but he knew that she'd shortly have to chose a new one due to the baby. He smiled at the sight before his eyes, but also at the thought of the little being, growing warm and safe in his wife's womb. He was sure Carter would be the best mother ever: she knew how to be soft and loving, but also rigorous and protective when needed. Even though she'd climbed atop the 'Gate Jack knew she'd never put their child's life in danger and would rather die protecting it. After a relaxing shower, Jack laid down near his wife and reverently kissed her temple, which made Sam smile in her sleep.
