AN: Thank you guys for all of the suggestions! It saved me a lot of time! I think I've got it figured out (with your guys' help of course) but it won't be coming up for a bit…you asked for a long story right? ;)
Here is the other part of the chapter. I just got back from a night shift, so apologies if there are mistakes.
Hope you like it. Again, mainly fluff…it's leading somewhere don't worry.
Previous Chapter: "What are you smiling about?" Fitz asked, noticing Jemma's over exuberant smile.
"What. Me. Nothing. Nothing," Jemma stated before a giggle got out.
Skye had to resist giving herself a face palm.
"Um, I have to put my tablet away," Simmons stated, almost running out of the dining area.
The two boys focused their stare on Skye who just shrugged and pushed the full plate towards them.
Chapter 38 Planned Meetings
Simmons came back to the kitchen and joined her friend at the table after placing her tablet in her bunk.
Skye was really surprised at how normal the British scientist was acting. If she hadn't been physically working with Jemma a few minutes ago to write a program for Fitz's birthday present, she wouldn't have suspected anything had happened that morning.
Breakfast went by pretty quickly, with the boys doing the dishes. Ward washed as Fitz dried and put away.
"Aww look Skye, they look so domestic," Jemma couldn't help commenting, giving the analyst a little nudge. Skye looked up from her laptop and smiled at the scene.
Having heard the statement, Ward turned his head and raised an eyebrow at the scientist, trying his best to be the robot that they claimed he was.
"Isn't it just adorable?" Simmons cooed.
The specialist had to turn his attention back to the dishes to avoid them catching the small smile that fought its way onto his face.
The biochemist being on a role, she continued, "Why agent Ward, was that a smile that I saw?"
Ward simply shook his head and shut off the faucet before he turned towards the two girls and stated, "must be a malfunction in my programming," smirk still there.
Jemma heard Skye chuckle next to her. With the best straight and serious face that she could muster, mind you it took a lot of work on her end, "you should get that looked at," she suggested. Next thing she knew the towel that was being used to dry his hands off was on her head.
Skye and Fitz followed the back and forth banter, smiling at Jemma's new look.
The analyst knew that back in the old days, her and Simmons would have gained up on Ward, but for now she was content with the fact the she was here and able to watch.
"You have become overly sensitive for a robot," Jemma mumbled, pulling the towel off her face. Grant simply shrugged.
"Oh Ward, I have that gun prototype that I want you to look at. You got a minute after breakfast?" Fitz asked, putting away the last plate.
"That was fast," Ward replied, a little surprised.
Fitz shrugged, "I had a little time on my hands and figured it would come in handy…Maybe that's what I should name it," he muttered the last part to himself.
"I am not carrying a gun around and referring to it as handy," Ward stated, serious.
"Why not?" Fitz asked, defensive of the name that had already started to grow on him. "Picture it, you save the day, and one of the many people come up to you and say, 'Thank you Agent Ward! You're my hero!'" Fitz imitated a high-pitched woman's voice.
"Fitz, no woman sounds like that," Simmons had to point out.
"Sure they do! Plenty of 'em do!" the engineer defended. At the shake of everyone's head, he continued "Well that's not the point. Anyways, they come up and thank you and you say 'It was nothing really.' And then you hold up the gun and say 'it was just handy'." Fitz imitated a really low voice in his American accent, a smile on his face. "Get it? Handy?"
He is met with silence to his question. Ward shakes his head, arms crossed with an eyebrow raised, questioning the technologist's sanity.
"Is that what Ward sounds like in your head?" Skye asked, joining the conversation for the first time. Simmons laughed as Ward let out a little chuckle.
"No, I was just…he's…oh never mind," Fitz gave up, astonished that no one liked the name. "Lets just test it out so I can figure out what else needs to be adjusted."
"Ok," Ward agreed. "But I am not carrying a gun around and referring to it as handy," he repeated, wanting to make sure that Fitz understood that point.
"Unappreciative agents," Fitz muttered under his breath as he headed out of the kitchen.
"If you ladies will excuse us," Ward added, following the sad little scientist.
Jemma and Skye looked at each other, both sporting a smile. "How did you manage to act so…normal?" Skye asked, curious at her friend who generally couldn't keep a secret.
"Oh it was soo hard!" Jemma admitted to her friend.
"You did good," Skye complimented shyly, wondering if it meant anything.
"Aww thanks!" Jemma happily accepted the compliment. "Hey I'm going down to the lab to do a little research on a few bacteria found by a SHIELD team at…" Jemma stopped herself, knowing that she babbled when she was excited. "My question is, would you like to join us in the lab?" she finished.
"Um, I was thinking of working on the program a little more so we can test it out and make sure its working tomorrow," Skye replied, getting up and grabbing her laptop.
"Oh ok," Jemma's smile returned when she thought of the present. "Fitz generally doesn't wake up till about 8am. Want to meet up, at say 6:30?" Jemma asked, feeling a little guilty for taking time away from her friend's sleep.
"Sounds good," Skye agreed before heading to the exit.
"Skye?" Jemma waited for her friend to look at her. "If you get bored and want some company, we'll be down in the lab," she offered.
Skye just nodded before heading back to her bunk. Jemma didn't realize how much the lab freaked her out. Especially going to the lab and Fitz and Simmons both being there. They didn't understand that for the majority of the time that she was at the facility, they would be the ones administering the drugs. Well the fake FitzSimmons. She knew that her friends, the real ones that had proven themselves time and again wouldn't do that to her, but her response was conditioned.
Skye tried to stop herself from thinking as she felt the onset of a panic attack. She had literally agreed to work with Simmons on Fitz' birthday present. A present that involved the holotable. A table that was located within the vicinity of the medical benches. White benches that looked like the ones at the facility where they would restrain her and administer the experimental drugs.
With each thought, the young girl felt her chest increasingly tightening more and more, as it became harder and harder to breath. She sped up to make it to her room, not wanting to have a meltdown in the middle of the open space.
Skye berated herself. How stupid could she be to just jump in and volunteer to be down there with Simmons. The young girl slid down the wall, and pulled her knees to her chest as she fought the losing battle of controlling her breathing.
All she had wanted was a little bit of normalcy and to be able to help her friend.
*******AoS*******
Ward had just finished looking over the gun prototype with Fitz when Simmons had joined them in the lab. He left the scientists after they had excitedly began blabbering on about their latest research project, deciding that he should save himself a headache.
Working out didn't sound appealing at the time, so he decided to go and check up on his favorite rookie. He smiled when he thought back to the morning conversation and how she had joined in.
They were getting there.
The agent walked to Skye's bunk before knocking on the wall of the open doorway. "Hey Rookie, do you want…" he stopped in his tracks when he saw her sitting against the wall with her knees pulled up, a slight tremble showing. Unfortunately this was a position that had become a regular for her.
Skye didn't look over at him so Ward walked into the room, sliding down the wall till he was shoulder to shoulder with the analyst. "What's wrong Skye?" he asked gently.
He watched her open her mouth, before closing it after no words came out. Ward watched the frustration and waited patiently.
"I…." she paused again. Would he feel like she wasn't making any progress if she told him her fears?
"You know you can tell me anything, right?" Ward asked, hoping to nudge her hesitancy away.
Skye managed to meet his eyes for a second before her gaze returned to her fidgeting fingers. "I told Simmons that I would help her with…something," she caught herself, unsure if Ward was supposed to know. The analyst rested her forehead on her knees. "I have to meet her in the med lab tomorrow morning," she added.
Ward caught the slight shudder as she mentioned the med lab.
"I know it's pathetic," the young hacker began in a quiet voice, "but I'm feeling anxious at the thought of going down there with Simmons."
Before Ward could counter her pathetic comment, she continued.
"After the first few doses of drugs, I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't. They would take me to the med lab…." She paused, forcing herself to rephrase it. "They would take me to a med lab look alike and strap me down before Simmons would….fake Simmons or Fitz would administer the drugs," Skye explained, another shudder running through her.
Her voice turned to a whisper, "I don't think I can do it." She felt so ridiculous, unable to go to an area of the plane just because she was scared of old memories that she couldn't face, like a coward.
"I think I have an idea," Ward stated, pulling her away from criticizing herself and sending her a gentle smile.
AN: So what do you think we should call the gun? JUST KIDDING! We're not naming that…
But really, did you like it? Next chapter will pick up where this left off. Please review and let me know! :)
I'm off to sleep…
