Jade groaned, peeling her eyes open and grunting, shoving Dean off her. What the hell was that? She struggled to get up, wiping her bloody hands on her trousers. All she could remember was a monster like thing swatting them away like a fly. She looked around for her gun, knowing that it flew from her hands when she went flying.

"Owww, wh-what?" Dean groaned and Jade helped him stand on shaky legs – blood was running down his forehead and his eyes were unfocused. Oh great, fan flipping-tastic… he had a damn concussion.

"Dean, sit down" She urged, helping him sit on the hard rocks. She was just about to wipe away the blood when people began screaming, like the kind where people are scared to death and Jade whipped around, her mind auto programmed to want to help but what she saw made her as still as a statue.

Surely her mind was betraying her because what she saw just didn't seem real – even in their line of work. It was like out of some awful horror-fantasy movie that was a complete knock-off. What she thought was just a single tail was actually one of eight tentacles and what she assumed was scales was in fact just gleaming, water resilient skin, very much like sea creatures have.

"Oh you have got to be kidding me" Jade muttered, giving up on looking for her gun and pulling out her silver blade. It was a fricking octopus, a bloody octopus – mind you not the small, friendly kind – this was a big ass, six foot tall thing that looked like it was just sprung from a garbage bin.

"What in god's name is that?" Dean exclaimed, his body becoming rigid.

"A fucking octopus, it's a damn killer-people-eatting octopus" Jade muttered, looking around for her dad – surely he would know what to do right? He was the expert, carried around that damn journal everywhere, he would know how to get rid of it.

"We have to do something" Jade told Dean, a determined gleam in her eye.

"Let's go then" dean replied, grabbing her hand and racing forward, keeping hidden behind the row of rocks. The octopus, Jade had to remind herself she wasn't dreaming, this was an actual octopus, was just sticking out of the shallow water, it's eyes as dark as midnight which sent shivers up Jade's spine.

"Okay, what do we do now?" Dean asked, pointing his gun and trying to avoid shooting innocent civilians.

"Well, try not to kill anyone for starters" Jade replied and Dean sent her a glare.

"Okay um… aim for a soft spot… maybe the head or the tentacles – that would be the best place to injure it" And Dean nodded in understanding before lifting his arm and taking point. For a second Jade feared he would miss, he did have a concussion after all, but she was underestimating him – the sound of the gun went off several times, leaving it smoking.

"Yeah, or maybe piss it off" Dean growled to her as the octopus let out a furious growling, guttural noise, turning it's beady eyes towards them and Jade gulped, grabbing Dean's arm.

"Oops" She said sheepishly, grimacing when it began sloshing through the water, sending more bikini bathed, short strapped people screaming for their lives – this really wasn't their day, and now some stupid, unusual, unbelievable blooming octopus was out to get them – yeah great.

"This is your fault" dean whispered furiously, pulling her back by the wrist.

"My fault? It was an educated guess – you didn't have to agree with me" She hissed, raising her blade as some sort of defence. The thing was getting closer and closer and showed no sign of stopping – it was like it was out to get their blood.

"Well you sounded sure of yourself" He told her and Jade huffed out a breath, nipping his arm painfully.

"Oh shut up will you – in case you haven't noticed it looks like we're about to get mauled to death by a frigging octopus – get your priorities straight" She snapped, the fear turning into anger. Even though they were practically shouting at each other they still held onto one another like a lifeline.

"Okay why's it getting out of the water, it should not be doing that" Dean muttered and Jade just shook her head in complete shock. She had no idea what the hell to do – this thing managed to render the two of them practically helpless by one swipe of its tentacle, what chance did they have realistically?

Jade's foot caught on a loose tuft of ground and she fell backwards, dragging Dean with her. When they both looked up the octopus was getting closer and closer, its eyes hungry.

"Now would be a great time to think of a plan Jade" Dean told her, skittering backwards across the sand. Jade followed suit, her mouth gaping open. She had no idea what to do – she had dealt with a lot of things in her nineteen years but this? This just seemed so unreal she had no clue what to do. This thing seemed un-killable.

Then out of no-where their dad appeared, a furious glint to his eyes that Jade had only witnessed a few times in her life – it was pure rage and a kind of fierce protectiveness that gave Jade the vibe of a mother lion protecting her cubs.

"Keep away from my children" He growled, slashing out with a long bladed machete, the sound of cutting flesh making Jade wince. The thing, octopus, whatever, let out a menacing noise and tried to defend itself but her dad was ready. He ducked, rolled over and stabbed upwards, cutting through its stomach. Jade pulled Dean to her feet and got ready to run to her dad but everything changed rather quickly. The octopus swiped downwards and all Jade could hear was the sound of bones crunching and her dad's pain filled scream.

"DAD" She screamed, fear filling her body. Nothing could happen to her dad, she wouldn't let that happen – he may be a complete dick at times but he was still family and if she lost him… she couldn't even think about it.

Dean sprinted in front of her, the obvious concussion forgotten, picking up the machete and slashing downwards sending the tentacle flying across the sand. Jade ducked and ran forward, helping Dean pull their dad from the octopus' embrace and taking him to safety.

"Dean is he okay?" Jade demanded, watching Dean's face as it changed from fear to worry.

"I think so – broken ribs though, might've punctured a lung" Dean told her and he placed their dad more comfortably across the rocks.

"We have to do something, soon, because if we don't…" Jade trailed off, meeting Dean's eyes.

"Okay, okay… here's the plan"

SPN*****SPN

"That was a pretty close call" Jade sighed, running her hands through her hair. Somehow, don't ask her how, but she and Dean managed to tag team the strange creature and it collapsed dead on the sand just a few minutes later. They dragged their dad back to the impala and zoomed him to the ER just in time by the sound of it – one of his left ribs had punctured a lung and any later and he would have died.

"Sure was" Dean agreed, holding the cloth to his head, stopping the flow of blood.

"You sure you're okay? That thing knocked you pretty hard" And Dean scoffed light-heartedly.

"Trust me sis I've had worse" And it was then the nurse came and took him away to get several stitches, just to be on the safe side.

"Miss Winchester – your father's awake" And Jade nodded gratefully, stumbling to her feet. It must've banged her up pretty badly to cause her to stumble. Jade shook it off and strode to her dads room, seeing him awake but drowsy.

"Hey dad" She greeted, relieved, pulling up a chair and sitting beside him. Her dad let out a small smile but Jade saw something in his eyes change as soon as he saw her – it had been like that for quite a few months now but Jade had always tried to ignore it, assuming it was just her paranoia.

"Jade" He replied, "And before you ask – I'm fine" And she just nodded in understanding and leaned back in the hard plastic chair. Her dad craned his neck around, confusion written all over his face.

"Where's dean?" He asked and Jade sighed. What – couldn't he be in the same room as her now?

"Stitches – nothing serious though" She added and they both fell silent

"So… you gonna tell me why you're acting like I've started the apocalypse?" She asked him, meeting his eyes. Her dad looked away almost instantly, like even looking at her made him physically ill.

"Jade, can't this wait till later?" He asked with a tired sigh but Jade just felt too angry and sad to take heed of what he said. He was her dad, shouldn't he always stand by her?

"No because I can't take this anymore – at first I thought I was just being paranoid but now I know… you don't see me as your daughter do you?" She asked, deliberately trying not to let her emotions show on her face – she was a master as controlling them and was definitely not going to show weakness, especially in front of her dad.

Her dad looked at her and all Jade saw in his eyes was disappointment and a little bit of dislike.

"You let me down, this family down, and that's not just something I can get over overnight Jade – you have to realise there was consequences to your actions" He told her in a stern voice and Jade just shook her head in disgust.

"I thought by now you were over that, it's been over six months for god's sake… you don't see Dean dragging up the past do you?" She retaliated, anger brimming to the surface. She was just trying to move past everything that had happened, why wasn't her dad allowing her that?

"That's because Dean's too soft on you and Sam, he would let you two get away with anything – that's his weakness but I won't allow it to be mine Jade" He said in a hard voice, "And what would your mother say?" He asked in disappointment and Jade shook her head and stood up abruptly, sending the chair flying backwards.

"Don't bring mom into this" She spat venomously, "You were just waiting for me to screw up weren't you? I bet it was on your bucket list - 'watch Jade ruin everything she touches' - well you know what dad" She growled, vaguely hearing Dean come in behind her, "I don't give a flying toss what you think and as far as I'm concerned you can shove your worthless opinions up your ass because I'm not perfect, nor is Dean or you for that matter so you can judge me whenever you turn into the perfect father" She finished her rant and stormed out of the room, the only way she could keep control of the situation. It was no secret she had a short temper.

"I'll meet you back at the motel Dean" She told him before he could even say a word but he grabbed her arm and spun her around.

"Talk to him Jade, it's a two way street – I know he's not perfect but give him a chance" He pleaded and Jade just scoffed and ripped her arm away.

"Yeah like that'll ever happen" And her eyes softened when she saw Dean deflate – it wasn't obvious to people but Jade knew him like the back of her hand and knew when he took things personally, "Look… Dad and I have never really gotten along, I don't think he knows how to connect with a daughter and I don't know how to connect with him, that's just the way it is and it will never change – I'm sorry, I don't want you to get stuck in the middle" She apologised sincerely.

"He'll get over it… it'll just take some time" He told her softly and Jade let out a disbelievingly noise.

"No he won't… to him obviously having a kid means I'm a disgrace but I'm fine with that so just… let it go and I'll meet you back at the motel okay?" And Dean finally gave in, retreating back to the hospital room.

She had no idea what made her do it – it was a spur of the moment thing she guessed, packing up whatever belongings she had and quickly scribbling out a messy note addressed to Dean.

Dean,

Don't worry I'm not leaving like Sam did, I promise, I would never do that to you – I just need some time to clear my head and before you think it, yes it may be selfish but apparently it's beneficial or whatever. And hey, you never know, it could help you too, give you time to clear your head because let's face it, you've had a hard time raising Sam and I no matter what you think.

All I'm saying is, it's not goodbye and I'll see ya in a bit and please please please don't be mad as I know you will be reading this, just take a deep breath and calm down yeah?

Miss you already,

Jade xxx

She finished writing and left the pen and her phone on the table, the guilt practically eating her up – she promised herself she would never leave Dean because, despite everything he said, he was the most vulnerable, he took things the wrong way and it chewed him up inside.

With a determined stride she turned away and hailed a taxi to the nearest airport, the whole way holding back the tears that were threatening to fall.
