His head hurt. His body hurt. He felt like he'd been shot all over again. It might have been an exaggeration but he still felt sore, especially his wrist. It dawned upon him that he was laying on something soft. A warm blanket had been draped over him. He must have been put to bed. Although he cannot remember, the last thing he does remember is…the voices.
They took control, no, he had control but they wouldn't stop. He made them go away, the only way he thought how. He had taken hold of a blade from his razor; it had been left there a few days now since the time Jack helped him to shave. He held the blade in his hand as the voices in his head had gotten worse. They were screaming at him, practically coaxing him to do it.
The Doctor looked at himself in the mirror; his face was stained with tears. He cringed as another voice rang out through his mind. A male, he hissed at him, laughing eccentrically. Upon hearing the new voice the Doctor hesitated, the blaze just hovering over his wrist.
Do it, do it for your Master
The Doctor took a deep breath and drove the blade across his wrist. Blood seeped from the deep wound causing the Doctor to instantly become light headed. He had tried to steady himself using the towel rack but brought it down with him as he crashed to the floor. Blood painted the floor red, the Doctor could hear more voices but they sounded distant. The voices in his head however, began to diminish and fade. As his vision began to blur so did the voices.
That's when the door burst open and his friends stood above him in shock.
"I wanted the voices to go away" he stated. Jack had shouted at him. It scared him, he'd done a bad thing and now he hated him. All he could do was apologize and hope he would forgive him. But before he could he blacked out and now here he was.
The Doctor could see a light through his eyelids and wondered what it might be. When he did opened his eyes a crack but he immediately shut them again, the blinding light that hung above him was too strong. He tried again and was able to adjust to the light and see his surroundings. Well he wasn't in bed; he wasn't even in his bedroom. He was in the Torchwood med-bay.
No one was around, he looked around him, he was alone.
He grew scared. He was alone, he couldn't see, he couldn't move. Why couldn't he move? He had tried to lift his hand up to his aching head but to no avail, it wouldn't budge. The Doctor lifted his head to see two restraints over his wrists, one placed slightly above his slashed wrist as to not cause more damage than need be.
The Doctor whimpered in fear as he tried his best to free himself from the leather straps. "No!" he cried out as he failed to get free. "Jack!" The pain throughout his body forgotten about, he cared no more than to get out of the straps and back to the TARDIS.
"Jack! Donna!" Tears fled from his eyes, he couldn't handle himself in the past or present. He was a monster and now he was strapped down like a guinea pig. His friends must hate him and have ordered this upon him. He hated himself more than anyone and remembered why he had cut himself in the first place, it was not because the voices told him too, but because he knew he deserved to die for what he had done.
The door opened and Jack and Donna entered. Donna rushed down the stairs to the Doctor's aid "Oh sweetheart we're sorry" Donna held the Doctor as much as she could, she lay a gentle hand on his cheek and placed a kiss on his head. But that didn't stop his tears flow down his face.
"Please, let me out" He begged "I'm sorry for what i did. I had to"
Jack shook his head "No. You didn't" Jack stared at the Doctor with soft piercing eyes, one that might make a man flee, but the Doctor had no where to go. Jack removed the lamp hovering above his bed allowing the Doctor to see more around him. "How are you feeling?"
The Doctor went silent, he didn't know what to say. Instead he looked to Donna for some encouragement but she gave him a sad look, she agreed with Jack.
"Sweetheart, we just want to know why you drove yourself to do such a thing?" The Doctor looked down at his restraints and kept his line of sight away from his friends, if they still were his friends, he was too ashamed to look at them "I'm sorry about the war and what you had to hear, i realise now that it was much too early to tell you"
Jack interrupted her "But if we hadn't then you would have remembered on your own. All on your own, we couldn't have predicted when you would remember but we would have much rather have been there with you when you did" Donna looked to Jack who nodded at her.
"And so we decided to tell you ourselves, we just didn't anticipate your reaction. We knew it would be bad, just not this bad" Donna looked down, blaming her self for this turn out
The Doctor still didn't answer and instead continued to cry silently "Doctor, look at me" Said Jack sternly. The Doctor blinked before slowly looking at him fearfully. Right now, the Time lord feared his friend would hate him and would never forgive him for what he had done.
"You scared me today" The Doctor swallowed "Me and Donna. We thought we'd lost you again"
The Doctor closed his eyes "I'm sorry" Jack sat on the bed and took hold of the Doctor's chin before he could turn away.
"No, I'm sorry. I promised that i'd protect you. These past two years have been a hell ride for you, what with Frank almost killing you and now this. I failed every time. I still couldn't protect you and i worry everyday might be the day I fail to save you. A life without you is a pointless one and i don't care of your past of your future as long as you are alive and happy then i am too"
Jack leaned forward and kissed the Doctor on the cheek. The Doctor sniffed as he tried to take in Jack's words.
"What Jack is trying to say spaceman, is that we don't care what you did and you shouldn't either. Just as long as you keep strong and never let yourself fall again. The war made you who you are today. Kind and smart and strong" The Doctor managed a weak smile at the red head who smiled back "Just don't ever do that again you frightened the hell outta me!"
Jack laughed as Donna basically reverted back to her normal self. But as he looked upon the Doctor who looked as if he were about to cry once more. He pulled him close and held him as he did. The Doctor cried into Jack's shoulder who in turn just held him tightly and never let go.
Donna just stood back and watched "Since nobody else is going to" Donna ranted before proceeding to undo the padded restraints and freeing the Doctor's arms. The Doctor retracted himself from Jack before smiling at his new freedom. Donna threw away the restraints before giving him a soft hug. "How about some tea?"
"Yes please"
"I'd like you to have something to eat too, you need to get your strength up" said Jack
The Doctor nodded "Okay" Donna nodded and left them alone to fetch his food and tea. When she had gone the Doctor looked down at his bandaged wrist and carefully felt along where he had cut. Suddenly a hand appeared and rested above his. He looked up at Jack who smiled at him "It's just a memory now"
