Chapter37
The next morning, the company had gathered in mine and Thorin's room for breakfast. I took this opportunity to learn from Bombur how to use the stove as we cooked a hearty breakfast together. I was ever so grateful to Dain and Thranduil for bringing food and supplies for us. I would make sure to repay their kindness somehow.
As we are cooking, I can't help but smile when I hear Aiden squealing with laughter from the main room. After being woken up to him crying from a nightmare, I am glad the events of the past few months have not traumatised him too much.
"You must be proud of him." Bombur suddenly says, causing me to look at his bright face. At my confusion, he nods to the living room. "Aiden. You must be proud. He has bounced back quicker than I thought a child would when caught in the middle of all that danger."
I smile. "I am. Back where we came from, he was the only family I had and, even though he was a small boy, he would be the one to cheer me up and make me laugh, when it should have been the other way around. I have always been proud of him and I always will be."
He smiles as he turns over the sausages and bacon in the pan. "He will fit in well with my brood. My sons will be happy to have another playmate."
I don't stop smiling as I cut the bread. "I'm sure he is looking forward to meeting them and finally having someone to play with."
We soon finish cooking and take the food out to everyone as we all sit around the table and eat. While in the middle of eating, Thorin turns to me.
"Sophia, would now be a good time to ask about why you told us you are a seer when you are not?"
I stop eating and look up to see the others looking in my direction. I nod as I put down my fork. "It is true. I am not a seer."
"Then, how did you know we were in trouble?" Kili asks.
I sigh as I try to think of a simpler way to explain my story.
"What I am about to tell you all, can not leave this room, I don't even know how much of this I can tell you all." They nod in agreement at this. "I know what I am about to say won't make much sense, but please try to bear with me. You all know that Aiden and I come from another world entirely, and in this world there's a series of books on Middle Earth which tell the story of the quest we have just been on. The thing is, when I arrived here, I had lost all memory of this, so I couldn't tell you any of this even if I wanted to."
"And in those books, it told you of the trouble we were about to walk into?" Dwalin asks.
"Not exactly. In that world, we also have things called movies, which are made by a bunch of actors acting out a story and it being visually recorded and sold. The quest had been recorded in this way and although it was of the quest, the movie had some differences in it than the book had. In the books, Azog had died in the Battle of Azanulbizar, but by Dain, not Thorin. So, in the Battle of the Five Armies, you had fought against his son, Bolg. In the movie, the four of you had gone to Ravenhill to face Azog. My memory returned to me when I was overlooking the battlefield and everything just hit me. That's when I rode out to Ravenhill to get to you before it was too late."
"And that's when you saved me." Fili points out, causing me to nod. "So. . .in this movie. . .did I die?"
I pause for a moment, with everyone looking at me. I just sigh, knowing the truth will have to come out.
"Yes. In the movie and the book, you, Kili and Thorin died, in different ways in each, but the three of you still died."
The silence after that was so intense you could hear a pin drop. I wish I didn't have to say what I said, but I know that they deserved to know the truth, especially Thorin, Fili and Kili. Balin was the first one to clear his throat as he spoke.
"It seems as though Mahal had given us a great gift when he sent you and Aiden to us, lass."
"The greatest gift he could ever have given us." Thorin says with a smile as he takes my hand.
I smile and look down to hide my blush.
The rest of breakfast goes by with a happier atmosphere with the others asking me questions about the world I came from, and with me answering as best as I can. A question from Kili came up about the picture that was in my hand when I woke up in camp. I explained to them as much and as simply as I could about cameras and how the pictures are created and developed, although I am sure I made a butchered job of it.
By the time breakfast is over, it is time for us all to leave and continue with the renovations that were started yesterday.
"Gandalf, could you stay behind a moment? I need to speak to you privately." I ask as everyone goes to the doors.
"Of course, my dear." Gandalf replies as he turns back.
At my request, Bofur and Bifur take Aiden for the day as Gandalf and I sit in the lounge. Thorin is the last to leave, looking back to us as he closes the door behind him.
"What was it you wanted to talk to me about?"
"Bilbo. I know you suspect him of having a certain artefact in his possession."
He looks to me for a moment, as if assessing what I am to say. "I assume that event is also written in your books?"
I nod. "It is. When I told you yesterday I know where the Ring is, I do know. What I did not say, is that it is in Bilbo's hands."
He nods. "I had my suspicion when we escaped the Goblin tunnels, and I thought I saw it, but I could not be certain."
"Well, you were right. Bilbo does have the Ring, and when I said that it stays safe, it does. Bilbo will keep it safe for many decades until the time comes for it to leave him."
"And you know when that time will come?"
"I do, and I will let you know when it comes close to that time. But, for now, it can be forgotten about. Nothing will come from it being in Bilbo's possession. Though, I would advise you to keep an eye on him."
"Two eyes, as often as I can spare them."
As he says this, I have to withhold a grin and to keep the fangirl inside me from coming out.
"What is it?" Gandalf asks, looking at me with a curious expression.
I smile and shake my head. "It's nothing. You just end up saying that to Bilbo later."
He gives a little smile at this as he nods. "Well, thank you for informing me of this."
"You are welcome. Oh, before I forget, if at all possible, do not tell the White Council what I have told you today, and yesterday for that matter. Galadriel and Elrond may already know, but Saruman can not know about this."
May I ask why not?"
"You may, but I think that is something that I should keep to myself. As I said yesterday, I have already changed a lot by saving Thorin, Fili and Kili, and even though I would do it again in a heartbeat, I am afraid that if I reveal too much, it might change things for the worse, not better."
He just nods. "I understand your worries, dear. Knowing the future can be a difficult burden to bear. I will allow you to keep your secrets, and I will keep our conversations to myself also."
I breath a sigh of relief at this. "Thank you, Gandalf, I appreciate that. It makes it easier knowing I have someone I can share this with."
He smiles. "I am honoured you allowed me to be your confidante in this, but if I may say, I believe you will be able to trust Thorin enough to help you through this also."
I smile back. "Oh, I know I can trust Thorin. And if I need someone to speak to, I will be sure to open up to him."
He nods. "That is good. "
After that, we also take our leave and find the others to get on with whatever work that needs doing.
The day is spent with me dividing my time between working with Oin and helping to take care of the injured and helping with clean up duty. I don't see Aiden for most of the day, but am assured that he is well looked after by Bofur and Bifur.
Later on that afternoon, word goes out to myself and the rest of the company that Bilbo and Gandalf are getting ready to leave, so after we all get together and managed to get a few things packed away for him, such as extra food and some of the treasure, we all make our way to the main gates to see him speaking with Balin, Gandalf standing to the side with a horse and pony.
"Will you tell the others I said goodbye?" we hear Bilbo ask Balin once we arrive.
"You can tell 'em yourself." Balin says as he notices us.
Stopping, he turns and smiles as he sees us all standing at the gates.
"Didn't think you were going to leave without saying goodbye, did you?" I ask as I step forward and embrace the hobbit.
Bilbo chuckles as he holds me close. "I am just terrible at goodbyes. I would have rather left quietly without having to face it."
I smile as I pull back, patting his shoulder. "I can understand that."
Aiden then runs forward and tackles into Bilbo, causing us to laugh a little at seeing him almost fall back from the collision. I'm grinning as I watch the pair embrace, thinking of how far Aiden has come since we first arrived here, and it's all thanks to this company.
"Do you have to go, Bilbo?" Aiden asks.
"I am afraid so, young one. But, do not worry, we will see each other again."
"Promise?" Aiden asks as he looks up at the Hobbit.
Bilbo smiles at him. "I promise."
Aiden gives him one more hug before he returns to me as Thorin steps forward.
"Bilbo Baggins. Firstly, I want to thank you for coming to our aid on this journey, I know I did not treat you with the respect you deserved during the beginning of this quest, but I now know your worth, and it is greater than all the gold in Erebor."
Bilbo falters for a moment, not expecting a compliment as high as this from the dwarf.
"Thank you, Thorin, that means much to me."
Thorin smiles, but it soon falls as he looks down. "I also wish to apologise and take back my words and my deeds at the gate, yesterday. You did what only a true friend would do. Forgive me...I was too blind to see. I'm so sorry that I have led you into such peril."
Bilbo shakes his head. "No, no, I'm glad to have shared in all your perils,Thorin - each and every one of them. And it's far more than any Baggins deserves."
They smile at each other before Thorin pulls him into a brotherly embrace. The rest of us smile as we watch, and I swear I can hear a few sniffles from behind me. As they move apart, Thorin places his hands on the Hobbits shoulders.
"Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books and your armchair. Plant your trees - watch them grow. If more people valued home above gold this world would be a merrier place."
I smile and nod in agreement at this as I step forward again with Fili and Kili, who are holding the bags we packed.
"Here are some supplies we packed up for you, Mr Boggins." Kili says with a grin.
Bilbo smiles and shakes his head as he takes them. "I don't think I will miss your cheek, lad."
This causes the rest of us to chuckle.
"We will miss you, though." Fili says as he pats Bilbo's shoulder. "You were a good addition to our company."
Bilbo smiles as he embraces both brothers. As they pull away and step back, I hand Bilbo the contract.
"Take this with you. To remember us by and for something that will soon become clear."
He looks to me in confusion for a moment before he nods and puts it away in his pack before turning to us all again.
"If any of you ever passing Bag End, tea is at four - there's plenty of it. You are welcome anytime."
The dwarves bow to him, aa he smiles. He begins to turn away, then turns back.
"Eh, don't bother knocking."
This causes us all to chuckle again, this time, I definitely notice some of the dwarves wiping away tears.
"You are also welcome back here anytime you wish, my friend. And you too, Gandalf." Thorin says.
Gandalf bows his head. "Thank you for your generosity, King Thorin. Good luck to you for the future, I am sure with Sophia next to you, it will be a bright one."
I smile at this, though blushing as Thorin wraps an arm around my waist. Bilbo and Gandalf mount their horse and pony and begin riding away from the mountain and back to the greenery of the Shire.
As the others return inside, I stay where I am, looking around at the scenery before me. When I was younger and had read the Hobbit books, I never thought for a moment I would ever be here, I had often dreamed of course, but to be here now. . .I'd say it's a wish and dream fulfilled.
"Sophia, are you alright?" Thorin asks.
I smile and nod. "I am. I was just thinking, Galadriel was right."
"About what?"
I turn to him, my smile still on my face. "I would find my way home at the end of the quest. Never did I realise, my home would be with you."
He also smiles as he pulls me into his arms and hold me close.
"I never thought I would return to Erebor, let alone find the love of my life on the way. However, Mahal does work in mysterious ways."
I grin. "That he does."
Well, there we have it. Sophia has told the truth and Bilbo and Gandalf have left Erebor. Now begins the start of Sophia and Aiden's life in Erebor with their favourite dwarves. I hope you stay with me through this journey xx
