Actually, it's madam, Ember Wing, not sir. XD

Also, I have no experience and not all that much knowledge about this beside what I've heard, read and learned in school. So if something doesn't make sense, please bear with me for a while.

accidents happen: chapter 38

Shadow's POV

"No... No... It's too early." I panted as I held onto the kitchen counter for support. My body was hurting and begged for a place to sit. I couldn't, though. I could barely move from the pain or the panic that was quickly overwhelming me. I had to go to my knees as I felt like they could give out underneath me any moment now.

'Oh Chaos... What do I do... I can't go into labour yet. It's too early! I'm two months to early!' These thoughts kept repeating in my mind as I was taken over by panic. I didn't know what to do. Should I wait for Sonic to come home? Should I somehow go to the hospital?

"Shadow!" Well, that was quickly answered.

"S-Sonic?" I muttered as I looked up at my left and saw my mate going to his knees next to me, placing an arm around me in concern. Tails was standing in the doorway, unsure of what he should do or say.

"What's wrong? Are you in pain? Do I need to bring you to the hospital?" Sonic asked, seemingly starting to panic a little himself.

"It hurts... I think... I think I'm going into labour." I managed to tell him in between my painfilled groans.

"What? How? You still have two more months to go!" Sonic stated. He was just as clueless as I was when it came to how this could be possible.

"I... I know!" I panted and my hands grabbed his shirt, clinging onto him as the pain rapidly got worse.

Tails decided to step in, knowing one of us three needed to stay cool and make the right choices.

"Early or not, it doesn't matter. It's better if we go to the hospital. It's the safest option." He stated. And he was right. Weither I was already in labour or not, it didn't hurt to go to the hospital.

"He... He's right." I told Sonic as he helped me back up on my feet. I didn't stay on the ground for long, though. Sonic immediatly swept me off my feet, literally, as he lifted me in his arms. It was surprising that he could still carry me. With all that weight on my belly, I know that I wasn't the lightest person around anymore.

"I'm taking you to the hospital. Tails-"

"Don't worry about me. Take Shadow to the hospital, I'll be calling the others and tell them that something might be happening." Tails had cut him off, but Sonic didn't mind. He was far too worried about my and the baby's well-being.

"No, I can't go!" I said as I started struggling against his grip, wanting to be back on the ground again. I whined as another contraction hit me.

"Shadow, I know this must be difficult, but we can't just sit here and do nothing. This kid wants to come now and we'll need help getting it here." Sonic convinced me.

For as much as I wanted to argue and contradict him right now, I couldn't. He was right. The baby wanted to come and it wanted to come now. There was no stopping it. The safest option was to go to the hospital and get help for something we didn't know much about.

"Okay." I said, biting down a wince as Sonic tightened his grip on me. I held onto him tightly as we left the house.

It only took us a couple of minutes to get to the hospital. When we walked inside, Sonic asked for assistence and a nurse immediatly decided to help.

"Doctor Burggen, right? I'll lead you to an avaible room where you can wait while I tell him your here." The nurse said before walking away, leading us to the nearest avaible room.

Thankfully, it didn't take long before I could finally take a seat. Sonic helped me get up and lie down on the bed. The nurse made sure to tell me to lie on my side before leaving, most likely to get my doctor and maybe the hospital's midwife.

"How're you feeling?" Sonic asked as he took my hand. He had taken a seat on a chair after shoving it closer to the bed.

"I'm fine." I lied.

"Really?" He said, knowing that I couldn't possibly be fine now.

"Okay... I feel like something is tearing me apart from the inside out. Besides that I'm just fine." I said, squeezing his hand as if it could help against the contraction running through my body.

"Well, we're here in the hospital now. I'm sure it's not going to take much longer now." Sonic said, trying to comfort me. Although, it would soon become obvious just how wrong he was.

"Where is he?!" I growled as I tried to cope with the pain running through me. Sometime ago I had moved to lie on my back with one hand on my belly while the other gripped the sheets.

We had been here for nearly an hour now and there was still no sign of Burggen. The only one that did come back was the nurse as she came to help me get changed into something more 'comfortable'. Which was just out of all of my clothes except for the top I had decided to wear this morning. It was for comfort reasons it seems, which as strange as I wasn't even allowed to keep my underwear on.

"I'm sure he'll be right here. He probably got held up." Sonic said, although I could see he was annoyed by the lack of doctor aswell.

"He better have a good reason." I panted as the contraction faded away, leaving me tired.

"And a good reason I have. I was in the middle of delivering a baby when a nurse came in to tell me that yours had decided to come nearly two months earlier than expected. I had my hands full so I couldn't leave. But I'm here now." Dr. Burggen explained as he came walking in with a nurse we had seen a couple of times during our visits.

"How many contractions?" He asked after instructing me to bend and seperate my legs. Without a doubt he was checking how far along I was.

"Every couple of minutes and they hurt alot." I answered as I looked away. I know that was the only way of knowing how far into this I already was, but that didn't mean it wasn't embarrassing. A new contraction quickly made an end to that embarrassment as I could only focus on that.

A couple of moments later dr. Burggen straightened himself out as he covered me with the blankets and told the nurse to go fetch that thing that's used for ultrasounds, which I had a hard time remembering the name of, before turning back towards me and Sonic.

"I'm afraid you're going to have to wait a little while longer. You're not nearly as dilated enough in order to give birth. We're going to have to wait until that time comes." The doctor said, earning a groan from me and a wince from Sonic when I took his hand to squeeze it again.

"What? But I've been feeling cramps all day and my water broke when they got much worse. How can I not be ready yet?" I asked. I was so sure that I was just minutes away from pushing a baby out.

"The first time is often more difficult and takes a little longer. It sometimes even takes up to two days." The doctor said.

"Two days?! Please tell me you're joking." I stated. When I saw him shake his head, I groaned again.

"Just look at the bright side, Shadow! This means that they don't want to leave yet!" Sonic said as he tried to cheer me up.

I just sighed.

"Again with the 'they'. You're really certain that we're having twins aren't you?" I asked. I wasn't so convinced. If I was really having more than one, than the doctor would've told seen it on the ultrasound.

"Well, it's not impossible." Dr. Burggen backed Sonic up. I looked up to him in surprise and confusion.

"With twins it can happen that one is hidden behind the other and stays unnoticed. Mothers of twins also sometimes go into labour much sooner than mothers with just one child. Sometimes even up to two months faster." He backed up his claim.

So that's probably why he wanted the nurse to grab that ultrasound-device-thing. He wanted to see if I don't just happen to be carrying twins.

"Oh no..." I whispered as I started to panic. This whole time I thought that Sonic and I would be raising just one child. Now I discover that Sonic might be right about having twins. Now I had to push double as much babies out of me. How was I going to do that?

"Just stay calm Shadow, it's going to be just fine. Just look on the bright side. The next time you get pregnant, it'll go much easier." Dr. Burggen said with a grin as he tried to look encouraging.

But I was having none of this 'bright side' stuff. The only words I heard that were somewhat nice and comforting was Sonic's statement about the baby, or babies, not wanting to leave me yet because they liked it too much in there.

"Here you go, doctor Burggen." The nurse from before said as she came walking in with a device on wheels.

Sonic got up from his seat and helped me sit up a little along with rolling up the bottom of my top to reveal my belly. The nurse rolled the device closer and searched for an electrical socket before plugging it in.

"Now let's search for the baby shall we?" She asked with an encouraging smile, but it did little to my growing nerves.
