"Moms," Mariana said, appearing in the doorway.
"Mariana, now is not the time, please go back upstairs," Lena said trying to get her daughter out of there.
"It's important," Mariana pressed.
"What is it," Stef asked, her daughter now having everyone's attention?
"The pregnancy test is not Callie's…..it's mine."
At that moment the world stopped spinning, at least for everyone in the Foster household, it froze. Forget heart attack, Stef felt her heart instantly explode inside her chest. Lena, on the other hand, felt her heart drop through the floor and the simple task of breathing almost became too much. The only thing that kept Stef and Lena breathing was their body's natural instinct to survive and, right now, Stef wasn't so sure she wanted that instinct to kick in. Her 17 year old daughter was pregnant!
Callie, still seated on the counter, was in total shock. Mariana couldn't be pregnant; if she was even worried about that, she was certain Mariana would have come to her. Her emotions were swirling around, darting in so many different directions, she felt dizzy. Brandon didn't know what to feel, numb was the only thing that came to mind. Once the initial numbing passed, anger bubbled up inside him. Who the hell did this to his sister? He wanted someone's head on a stick. However, one look at his sister and he just wanted to protect her…from life, from the struggles she was about to go through, and most importantly from their moms.
"Brandon, Callie, upstairs now," Stef demanded.
Callie slowly hopped off the counter and gave Mariana's hand a gentle squeeze on her way by. Brandon stood next to Mariana not wanting to leave her side.
"I will stay if you want," Brandon whispered.
"I'm ok, Brandon, thanks."
He gave his sister a kiss on the cheek before heading for the stairs.
"Sit," Stef demanded, pointing to the stool.
"Mom I…," Mariana started before being cut off.
"Please tell me this is a joke," Stef said, pacing the short length of the kitchen. "How the hell is my 17 year old daughter pregnant?"
"Really mom do we need to have the talk," Mariana said, almost with a chuckle.
Stef froze for a split second, shocked that her daughter was giving her sarcastic humor right now. Lena quickly jumped in front of Stef, hoping her presence was enough to remind Stef to stay calm. Everything was so insane right now she didn't want Stef to do something she would later regret.
"You're pregnant and making jokes," Stef yelled, but stopped her advances feeling Lena's hand on her arm.
"What," Mariana asked suddenly realizing the severity of the situation. "No…no, no, no I am not pregnant," Mariana jumped up, now fearing for her life.
Once again, the mother's froze now in total confusion. Was Mariana back tracking because she was scared and needed time to figure things out? It didn't seem to matter what was about to come out of Mariana's mouth, Stef knock her into next Tuesday. Stef took the pregnancy test and slammed it on the island; it was a wonder how that thing was still intact.
"Mariana, I want you to think very carefully about the next words that come out of your mouth," Stef said, almost spewing venom. "You said this was your pregnancy test and this test is positive. Are you pregnant," Stef asked, now holding the positive test in her hand?
"I am sorry…I bought the pregnancy test, so technically it is mine, but I bought it for a friend. She took it here and tossed it in the trash…I guess she was scared her parents would find it…although I can't imagine why," Mariana mumbled to herself.
"This is not your test," Stef confirmed.
"No."
"Someone else took this test?"
"Yes."
Stef breathed a sigh of relief, but that was short lived.
"Ew, gross someone else peed on this thing," Stef yelled, tossing the test onto the table and running to the sink to wash her hands.
"Serves you right for jumping to conclusions," Mariana smirked now that she knew her life wasn't on the line.
"Oh, don't think you're off free and clear here Miss Thing," Lena stated, not happy with how her daughter handled things.
"What? You were practically half way down Callie's throat, I had to say something to stop Rambo over there," Mariana said, pointing to her mom. "It wasn't Callie's test, like she stated, which someone didn't listen too."
"And we will address that later," Lena said, glaring at her wife. "But for now we are dealing with you…for future reference you need to be crystal clear with what you mean, especially when it is very important information. For example, god forbid you ever get into an accident…don't call us and say you were in an accident…call us and say mom I am fine but…this way we know you are ok first which is the important thing. Tonight you could have just stated it was your friends, saying it was yours lead us to believe you were pregnant."
"And apparently anyone being pregnant sends mom into psycho delusional momzilla."
"No the point," Lena added. "Mariana which one of your friends took this test?"
Mariana looked down and remained silent.
"Is it someone at Anchor Beach?"
Once again Mariana reminded silent.
"Mariana if someone at school is pregnant and scared of their parents they are going to need some help."
"It is not my news to share."
"Ok, we will let this slide for now…but please, please tell them to come talk to me if they need help. They don't have to do this alone."
"I promise I will make sure they know."
"All right, please go upstairs so I can talk to mom."
"Fine, but if I were you I wouldn't wait too long to apologize to Callie."
Stef had both hands resting on the kitchen island, her head dropped in thought. Lena waited until she knew her daughter was up the stairs before addressing her wife.
"Just so we are clear, not acceptable," Lena said in full teacher mode.
"But Lena…," Stef started to defend herself.
"NO," Lena said raising her voice. "There is no defending blowing up on our kids tonight."
"But they…"
"NO I TALK, YOU LISTEN. You did enough talking today, all of it counterproductive. There was a potential that one of our girls was pregnant, one situation could have involved two of our kids and in a time when they would need us most, you blew up and jumped off the deep end. The damage you have done tonight, we will be lucky if they come to us for a stick of gum, let alone something that actually matters," Lena said, clearly upset.
"I'm sorry," she said, knowing she really messed up tonight.
"I am not the one you need to apologize to," Lena said, looking towards the stairs.
Brandon was lying on his bed, his arms folded over his face. He couldn't believe how the night played out. Here he thought he was coming home from school for a week and could relax and enjoy the time with his family and girlfriend. Things quickly took a downhill spiral when Stef made incorrect assumptions. Brandon knew that having a baby right now wasn't the best choice, but when Stef held the positive pregnancy test in her hand, something changed. For a moment, Brandon let himself go there…to the place where Callie was pregnant and they were going to have a baby together. When Mariana said it was her test, he felt a little twinge of disappointment in his heart. They had time, they had their whole lives ahead of them and he really did want to finish college first. Tonight cemented the fact that Callie is the one. She is the one he wanted to marry, buy a house, get a dog and have a baby with…when they were ready. There was a knock on his door that pulled him out of his thoughts.
"Come in."
"Hey, how are you holding up," Mariana asked walking into the room?
"Me? Are you kidding? What about you? I am surprised you're still alive the way mom was acting."
"I am not pregnant, Brandon. I bought the test for a friend and she took it here…I guess she tossed it here afraid her parents would find out."
"So you're not pregnant…wow this night has just been crazy. I was kind of looking forward to being an uncle," Brandon smirked and quickly ducked as Mariana grabbed for a pillow aiming for the head.
"I hope I am an aunt before you are an uncle…I mean please graduate college first and all that stuff but I would like a niece or nephew within 5 years. I will be the cool young aunt that is always requested for babysitting."
"Hey I will be the cool young dad my kid will love to hang with."
"Yeah ok keep thinking that…I would believe Callie as the cool parent though," she laughed. "Speaking of which, where is she?"
"What do you mean? She is in her room."
"No she isn't, I was just there."
Brandon, trying not to get alarmed, grabbed his phone to call Callie only to have it jump to voicemail.
"She isn't answering."
"Do you think she ran?"
Brandon darted off the bed and raced down the stairs, his feet barely touching the step. He burst into the kitchen almost flattening his mom whom was on her way to see him.
"Brandon, what the hell," Stef asked, shocked by the near collision?
Brandon ignored his mom and grabbed her phone, opening the find my phone app. He tapped Callie's number and bounced from foot to foot waiting for the phone to be located.
"Come on…come on," Brandon mumbled.
"What is going on," Lena asked, concerned?
"Callie is momentarily un-locatable."
"WHAT," both moms yelled?
Brandon dropped the phone and raced out the back door. Stef grabbed her phone seeing where it had tracked the phone too. She was a little surprised to see the phone was pinging in their current location. Was Callie still here or did she ditch her phone? The three walked to the back door to see Brandon sitting on the edge of the patio with Callie next to him holding her guitar. Stef and Lena breathed a sigh of relief. This night had already been bad enough, they didn't need to add a missing kid too.
"Mariana why don't you go upstairs, I need to talk to Brandon and Callie," Stef said, patting her daughter on the back.
"Ok, play nice this time."
Stef sighed and slowly walked out on the patio with Lena slightly behind her.
"Hey guys, can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Talk, or yell," Brandon challenged?
"Talk…more like apologize. I lost my head tonight and I am sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you two and went off the deep end like I did. If you two were having a baby, you would have had enough to deal with without me yelling at you. You are my babies and I just want what is best for you. I know how hard it is having a baby so young…this time of your life, you're supposed to worry about getting to class on time and where to spend spring break, not 2am feedings and diapers."
"You didn't even give us a chance, mom," Brandon said, holding Callie's hand. "You came in accusing us without asking a single question."
"I know B and I am sorry. My behavior tonight was unacceptable and inexcusable. I got scared," Stef admitted. "I saw my kids about to be forced into adulthood and I just wanted to cling onto my babies."
"Yeah well in case you missed it, I have been an adult since I was 10 years old. I have spent my whole life being judge by a file and not given a voice. I told you I wasn't pregnant and you didn't listen, so I am returning the favor," Callie said, getting up and walking back into the house.
Stef couldn't blame anyone but herself for how Callie reacted. She totally lost her cool and the voice of reason flew right out the window. She should have had more trust in her kids, at the very least talked to them and given them a chance before just exploding all over them. She had to do some major damage control.
