Chapter 38

The Assurance

"What we have is real, and that's more than enough for me."

Niall and Riley both lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Somehow, Niall managed to make Riley stay the night…something that she usually does not do.

Maybe it was because Riley felt scared, scared that they might be falling apart which was why Niall said those words to her. Right now, all Riley could think about is how not to let her feelings over power her. Niall had that much of a hold on her.

Riley let her eyes wander from the ceiling to the boy next to her.

She didn't want to ask…she wanted to know but she didn't want to ask. She was scared she might not be able to take the answer, the consequence of having asked such a question.

But just like her eyes, her mouth wanders on its own and the question came out before she could even think of it as coherent as possible.

"Why won't you kiss me?"

Niall shifts and looks at her. Riley searches for his deep blue pools and swallows hard.

Niall whispers his answer, "Because I don't deserve it." Deep down, Riley felt his honesty.

"You're the boy I gave my heart to, I think I know if you deserve it or not." Riley says back to him.

Niall looks back at the ceiling and sighs before sitting up on the bed. Riley follows him and faces him, waiting for his reply. But he doesn't give any, and Riley grows impatient so she says, "If this is about your amnesia—"

"I'm just stressed lately," he cuts her off. "It's nothing you should worry about, Riley."

Riley shuts her mouth and cups Niall's face closer to her. She knows he was just making an excuse. She knows it in her bones and she couldn't help but feel more scared than before. Was he hiding something from her?

She hopes it was just that: he was just keeping something from her, something that is as small and pathetic as insecurity. Because if it was something more than that, Riley might really lose her mind this time.

For a minute, Niall though Riley was going to kiss him but he knows she was not that confident to do that.

"I want you to know," Riley says, "that even if you don't remember, what we have now…it stays. We stay."

Niall looks deep into her grey eyes, the one he fell in love with as he tries to compare her eyes now from the first time he ever laid eyes on them. The moment he heard her words, he somehow felt bad for keeping things from her. He knows that those words were not just to convince him but herself as well.

Niall holds one of her hands that are cupping his face. Riley continues to say, "What we have is real, and that's more than enough for me."
