Madison's POV:
I swung open the door to Raf's apartment, heading straight for the kitchen. Garrett had eaten all of the watermelon the night before and I knew that Raf had some. I smiled in victory as I pulled out the bowl and closed the fridge. I jumped, startled at the sight that awaited me on the other side of the door. There was a small girl, staring at me. She had dark brown hair and what looked like white hair streaked throughout it.
"Uh….Hi?" I said with uncertainty. The little girl gave me a big smile, giggled, and grabbed onto my leg. "Where did you come from?" The little girl just smiled up at me. "Ok…"
"I hungwy." Her small voice spoke up. Well…I guess I should feed her. I sat her on the counter next to the watermelon bowl, letting her eat that. I shuffled through the cabinet until I found some pop tarts. I quickly heated them up and munched on watermelon with her. Yeah, this was totally normal.
"What's your name?" I asked the little girl between bites. She hummed contentedly as she eyed my fingers.
"Ameerah. I like your fingews." She told me. I looked down, assuming she meant my teal nail polish.
"Thanks. Did you want some nail polish for you to put on your nails?" I asked her. She nodded enthusiastically. "Alright, let's go get it from my room while we wait for your breakfast to finish heating up." I helped her off the counter. She immediately took my hand as we walked out the front door. We passed Stiles on the porch between my apartment and Raf's. "Hey." He stopped at the top of the stairs and sputtered as he looked between Ameerah and I. I walked her back into my room. As we opened the door, she immediately had me pick her up. Garrett's eyes snapped toward me. Patrick, seeing Garrett staring, turned toward me as well. "Hey." I repeated, walking over to the dresser as I showed her my nail polishes. "Which color?" She looked them over quietly.
"Pinck." She whispered quietly in my ear, her mouth hiding behind her hand. I nodded and grabbed the nail polish.
"Stiles is here. We'll be leaving in 2 minutes." I told my still gawking brothers. I walked back out of our house to see Stiles still stuck gaping in the same spot. "Sup." I gave him a head nod. Stiles seemed to shake himself out of his daze as he follows me into Raf's apartment. I set Ameerah down at the table and brought over her poptart and the watermelon, both of us eating. Garrett and Patrick appeared behind Stiles.
"Uh, Madison, who's your friend?" Patrick asked as he stared at Ameerah like he had never seen a child before.
"Ameerah." I replied simply, really because I didn't know anything else about her.
"And where did she come from?" Garrett asked. "Because she smells like a werewolf." Stiles eyes grew large at the statement. I looked at Ameerah a little in surprise, looking at her in a new light.
"Huh, interesting. I did not know that." Patrick groaned and shook his head at my admission. "I have no idea where she came from. She just showed up in the kitchen after I got here."
"So, let me get this straight. You walk into your friend's house, find a strange little girl that you have no idea where she came from, and feed her?" Stiles asked with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
"Uhm…yes?" My answer came out as more of a question. The three guys groaned at me.
"Seriously? Haven't you ever seen a horror movie? You never follow the child!" Stiles exclaimed, flailing his arms a little to help emphasize his point. Amee giggled at him.
"She said she was hungry!" I defended myself.
"You see a child that tells you they are hungry and your first instinct is to feed it!" Stiles exclaimed.
"Duh. Isn't that everyone's first instinct?" I asked. Patrick just shrugged at me. "Why wouldn't that be my first instinct?"
"Well what if she's so hungry she ate Raf! Huh! Where even is Raf?" Stiles' over dramatic voice caused me to chuckle.
"I don't know." I answered. Stiles mouth gaped open.
"Oh my God, she ate Raf." Stiles deadpanned. Garrett rolled his eyes at him.
"Mommy is sleeping. Don't wake up sleeping beaws." Ameerah spoke up between bites. She pointed her finger at us with a serious face as she told us not to wake up sleeping bears.
"It's true. I can hear her heart beat in there." Garrett spoke up as he pointed down Raf's hall.
"Oh my God. Can you please keep talking and calling Raf your mommy as many times as you can fit into a sentence?" Patrick asked Ameerah. She scrunched up her face in confusion.
"Why do I have to say Mommies name?" Ameerah asked. Oh my God, that got cuter the more she said it.
"So she's just staying here all day while Raf sleeps?" Stiles asked, starting to sound concerned about the girls safety.
"No." Derek said, appearing out of nowhere and causing all of us to jump, even Garrett. "Now go to school." Derek snapped, throwing his jacket on the couch in front of him.
"Dewek!" Ameerah squealed loudly, jumping up from her seat and running over into Derek's waiting arms. Derek's face looked softer than I had ever seen it as he gave a small, soft smile to Ameerah. Stiles, Patrick, and Garrett stood with their mouths slightly opened as they looked at Derek.
"Seriously, leave. Amee's fine." Derek snapped, sending a glare to the three teens. They begrudgingly shuffled out of the apartment, really just wanting to stay and find out more about Ameerah.
"Amee?" I asked him. Derek just shrugged in response. "Oh, she wanted someone to paint her nails. Just tell Raf once she finally joins the living." I told Derek, passing him the nail polish.
"I'll just do it." Derek said, taking a seat with Amee in his lap as he opened the nail polish jar.
"What. The. Hell." I watched opened mouth as Derek began painting Amee's nails pink, and it didn't actually look bad. "How do you…"
"I had sisters and female cousins." Derek answered, not really elaborating more. My heart broke a little on the inside for Derek and his lack of family. I couldn't imagine losing a sibling or my mom, much less everyone. Raf stumbled down the hallway, stopping in her tracks once Derek came into view painting Amee's nails. She opened and closed her mouth a few times.
"The sight just melts your heart doesn't it?" I snarked. Raf didn't respond and continued to slowly open and close her mouth like a fish, a small blush rising to her cheeks. Derek turned to glance at her. Raf seemed frozen and unable to think of an out. "Raf, don't you need to shower?" I offered. Raf nodded dumbly and turned to walk back to her room. "You have a way with women Derek Hale." I said laughing as Derek rolled his eyes at me while I walked out the door.
Raf's POV:
"So why do you need to talk to Derek again?" I asked Garrett as Amee and I drove him over to the abandoned subway station.
"I just do." Garrett answered vaguely, staring up at the almost full moon. "I'm already starting to feel it." I put the car in park, beginning to get Amee out of her car seat before I chose to respond.
"It wont be like last time. You wont kill anyone because you don't have a psychotic alpha here that is going to force you to kill anyone. If it makes you feel any better, you can stay at my place for the night." Garrett just nodded quietly as we walked down into the subway station. Amee jumped from my arms and ran for Derek's subway car. A few seconds later Derek walked out with her in his arms, Amee talking excitedly about our trip to the park and the store we had taken earlier in the day.
"Oh great and mighty alpha! We come to request an audience with his terrifyingness. We come baring the gifts of this child, a sandwich, some chips, and a blood-like substance." I held the subway bag up along with the fruit punch bottle. Derek glared at me while Amee giggled and Garrett smirked.
"So I thought about what you said last night...and I think I want to join your pack…on a few conditions though." Garrett spoke up. I looked at him slightly surprised. Derek gave him a quirked eyebrow, silently telling him to go on. "I never want to kill anyone with out absolute proof that they deserve it. Other wise you have to do the killing. And I'm never going to be able to hurt my siblings or my mother, so don't ever put me in a situation against them." Derek gave him a curt nod. Garrett's shoulders deflated in relief.
"Derek! Derek!" Isaac's voice screeched in alarm. Derek and I exchanged a quick glance of alarm as he walked by and handed me Amee. I moved Amee away from Isaac subconsciously, noticing that Derek was standing slightly in front of Amee and I, almost protectively.
"What's wrong?" Derek asked calmly, almost like he expected Isaac to just come to him with some easily fixed teenage problem. Isaac glanced at Garrett and I skeptically before continuing.
"My dad. I think he's dead." Isaac said panicked. Derek took a few more steps closure to him. The air in the room was suddenly tense.
"What did you do?" Derek asked in a much more serious voice. Isaac shook his head softly.
"That's the thing. It wasn't me. I didn't get a good look at it, but it was something else." Isaac told us. There was a short pause as everyone thought of what to do.
"Alright, go back to your house. Act like nothings wrong. Go to the school tomorrow same as always. Play dumb whenever the police do show up." Derek instructed him. Isaac nodded but still looked a little freaked. Isaac's father may have been an abusive asshole, but he was still his father, and Isaac was bound to have a few happy memories in there of him. There was no way he wasn't freaking out about his father's death. My heart ached with empathy.
"Or Garrett and I can follow him home, make sure the thing doesn't come after him, then he can sneak out the window and ride with us back to my place, stay their for the night, and then I will take him back home before school the next day." I added in. Derek turned around to look at me in surprise, quirking an eyebrow. Isaac shot me a grateful look. "I mean, he's your beta, so it's your decision. I just thought he might feel better to be around pack after losing a family member." I rambled, realizing that I might have stepped over some bounds. Derek just shrugged.
"Do what you want." Derek walked by, snatching his food and drink as he went back into his train cart.
"Alright, well go say by to Derek Amee. Your foster dad and brothers are going to get you in the morning." I said putting her down. She trotted into the train cart. Garrett shuffled his feet awkwardly.
"So…how's lacrosse going?" Garrett asked Isaac. Isaac looked at him a little strangely.
"Uhm…ok I guess." Isaac responded, shooting me a questioning look. "Why?"
"Just…be careful playing and stuff while your still getting control. Don't want to accidently kill your entire team…" Garrett trailed off. I sighed and rolled my eyes.
"Alright, let's go before the awkwardness kills me." I grumbled, scooping up Amee as we walked to the car.
Madison's POV:
"So why are you watching practice today?" I asked Garrett as I read The Death Cure.
"I should be more involved in sports…or whatever. School spirit. Ya, know?" Garrett mumbled. Occasionally glancing up his DS to see if practice had started.
"You mean you are keeping an eye out for Isaac, because he's a new wolf playing a sport on his first full moon." I sent Garrett a smirk, as he looked at me in surprise.
"Uuuuhhhh, wh-" Garrett cut himself off. "Raf told you." I laughed and nodded. His head snapped over to the tree line. "Come with me." Garrett didn't give me a chance to respond as he grabbed my hand and yanked me back toward the trees. We stopped as we reached Derek and Raf.
"Where's Amee?" I asked, looking around for the little girl.
"She's finishing up the paper work with child services and then leaving with my Tío." Raf answered, her eyes filled with sadness, but she had momentarily adopted Derek's emotional mask of indifference.
"I thought Scott ran around on the field, why is he in goal?" Garrett asked, drawing our attention back to the field. The players were lined up, going one on one with the goalie.
"He does." I responded. We watched as Scott ran out of the goal to tackle the other player to the ground, sniffing them as he went.
"What the hell?" Garrett murmured as we watched Scott get yelled at by the coach only to run back out of the goal and tackle the next player.
"It's like watching a retarded chicken with its head cut off trying to use a computer." Raf commented. Garrett and I laughed loudly, while Derek shook his head, a smirk on his face.
"He's trying to figure out which one is the werewolf." Garrett guessed. Raf and Derek nodded.
"But he's only using one of his senses." Derek said in a disappointed tone. Raf hummed in acknowledgement as we watch him take down yet another player.
"In hind sight, maybe we should have given him a heads up about Isaac…maybe even Jackson, too." I thought out loud. "That way we could have prevented this." Garrett's head snapped over to me.
"Wait…Jackson?" He looked between Derek, Raf, and I in confusion. Raf glanced at Derek sheepishly before snapping her fingers.
"I knew I was forgetting something." Raf laughed. Garrett looked at her unimpressed. "Yeah, bit him too, though for a day there we thought he was going to die…guess not."
"I'd tell Scott if I felt like getting a moral lecture when I've done nothing wrong." Derek commented casually as we watched Jackson sit out.
"Speaking of not telling people…has anyone told Patrick…" Garrett asked. Raf and I exchanged wide-eyed looks. Holy mother of…he was going to kill us. The sound of Scott and Isaac colliding brought our attention to back to the lacrosse field. Scott and Isaac were crouched facing each other. Our attention went to the Sheriff and his men as they walked onto the field.
"What are they talking about?" I asked the other three. It was silent for a moment as they listened in.
"His father's dead. They think he was murdered. They are bringing Isaac in for questioning." Garrett looked to Raf and Derek. "We got to get him out of there. He didn't do it and it's full moon tonight."
"First off, you're not doing anything thing tonight but being chained up in the subway station because you don't have control yet. Second off, we will get him out, don't panic." Raf stated. "Just go to class as normal. I'll see you guys after school." Garrett and I nodded before walking off to the schoolyard. We caught up to Scott and Stiles as they walked to the locker room.
"Have you guys seen Patrick?" I asked. "There's something we need to tell him that we forgot to."
"No, but Isaac Lahey is a werewolf!" Scott exclaimed. Garrett chuckled awkwardly. "Oh my God, you both knew and didn't think to tell us?!"
"If it makes you feel any better we forgot to tell Patrick too…which brings us back to have you seen Patrick." Stiles and Scott sent Garrett and I dirty glares before Scott cocked his head.
"There's a fight around the corner." Scott stated, explaining the commotion we heard at the end of the hallway. Stiles and I exchanged excited glances before sprinting to the end of the corridor to watch. There were six or seven guys pounding on one dude. The guy seriously needed some back up. Garrett barreled past me, throwing his bag in my direction as he hopped into the fray and yanked a dude off of the lone fighter. It was Patrick. Patrick was in a fight with seven dudes. Garrett yanked off another kid, before another kid jumped on his back. Oh, this isn't going to end well. Patrick and Garrett punched a few people, somehow managing to get themselves back to back. As the boys continued fighting, some random chick stepped in and began hitting Garrett in the side. Garrett tried his best to block, but it was obvious that he wasn't going to try and hit her back. I took out my hoop earrings and dropped my bag, immediately ripping the girl off of Garrett and punching her in the face. She came at me again, obviously going to try and slap me or pull at my hair, instead I round house kicked her in the face, wincing as the move pulled on my stiches. Oh, crap! I forgot I had those.
"What is going on here?" Mr. Peterson came out of no where, effectively making the entire crowd disappear. "Front office, NOW!" Garrett and I walked over to Patrick, grabbing his hands to help him stand. Patrick had a bloody nose and a busted lip, but none of that compared to the murderous face he sported. We gathered our things with the other people that were in the fight and walked quietly to the principles off. "Wait out here." The teacher snapped. Patrick, Garrett, and I took the chairs out by the window, forcing the others to sit on the other side of the door on the floor.
"Do we get an explanation?" Garrett asked. Patrick leaned his head against the windows.
"In the words of an angry Raf, they're butt eaters." Patrick simply replied. "Now no more talking I'm getting a head ache."
"What if they give us after school detention and they decide to take it late like Harris?" Garrett asked, sounding slightly panicked.
"We just got in a fight at school. If all they give us is a late night detention we should consider ourselves lucky." Patrick responded with his eyes still closed.
"Tonight's a full moon." I reminded Patrick, who just let out a heavy breath in response.
"So?" Patrick snapped. His eyes suddenly shot open in worry. "Oh, shit. I'll take the fall. If all else fails, just skip and they can get over it."
"Words of wisdom from our older brother." I chuckled. "So since we jumped in to help you, guess now would be a good time to tell you that we forgot to tell you Derek bit Jackson and Isaac."
"Are you kidding me! You fucking forgot that minor detail?" Patrick growled at us.
"Our bad, we got a little distracted by the whole Lydia and Amee situation. They thought Jackson was going to reject it the other day because he was spitting up some black gunk, but he looks fine now. Isaac is already showing signs of it taking." Garrett informed him. "Isaac also might be going to jail tonight to be questioned for the death of his father, which he didn't do." Patrick groaned at the thought.
"My headache just got much worse." Our silence was interrupted a few minutes later when Scott and Stiles showed up.
"What are you guys in for?" I asked as Scott and Stiles sat down on either side of me.
"We threw a paper ball at Harris' head." Stiles answered nonchalantly. My siblings and I laughed. "Have you been listening in?"
"Listening to what?" Patrick asked, his face scrunched in confusion. Stiles' eye twitched.
"My dad is in there talking to Jackson as a witness." Stiles spazzed, making me duck so he didn't hit me in the face. Scott and Garrett turned to whisper intently. Stiles and I leaned over too, as if we would be able to hear it ourselves if we tried hard enough.
"Jackson says Isaac's father was beating him." Scott said sadly. We all stayed quiet. The sound of footsteps caused me to turn my head back. Stiles had yet to move his head back, causing our faces to end up extremely close together, just inches apart. Stiles eyes glanced down at my lips, causing butterfly's to erupt in my stomach. Someone cleared their throat. Stiles and I jumped as we turned to see the Sheriff. Stiles flailed, ripped my Death Cure book from my hand, and hid his blushing face in it. I blinked at the Sheriff, my own face flushing. The Sheriff looked at his son and rolled his eyes.
"Hi, Scott, Madison, Garrett, Patrick." We all gave small waves in return, Patrick saluting him. The Sheriff's face scrunched up. "What happened to your…" He spoke to Patrick, gesturing to the dried blood on his face.
"Oh, uh, just got in a fight with some jerks talking smack about my sister." Patrick waved it off, giving the Sheriff a sheepish smile. The Sheriff nodded, glanced at his son one last time before sighing and walking off.
"They were insulting me?" I asked in confusion at the same time that Stiles said, "They were insulting Madison?", and Garrett said, "How did the Sheriff know Patrick's name?" Garrett's question made us all turn to Patrick. Patrick laughed uncomfortably.
"The Sheriff may or may not have let me off with a warning and not calling my parents…or putting it on my record…a few times." Patrick waved it off as Garrett and I stared at him with open mouths.
"And you were going to rip us a new one for telling you two days late that D-" I started to say but Scott smacked my arm and looked behind me with wide eyes. I turned to see Gerard giving us a false nice smile. I gulped.
"Hello boys, and girl. How about the Elliott's come in to talk first." I shared an uneasy glance with Stiles. We filed in quietly. "Patrick Elliott. Average grades, plays soccer, all your teachers say that you are not living up to your potential. Madison Elliott. Honor roll student, teachers love you, and you have two out of school extra curricular activities. Garrett Elliott, my oh my, extraordinary academics, even skipped a grade, and is in the Electronics club." He let out a sigh. "So, what seemed to happen?"
"Some friends of my ex-girlfriend cornered me in the hallway. They were rather upset about the way I broke up with her." Patrick explained.
"I see." Gerard made a face tell him to continue explaining.
"See the night of the dance my sister…got hurt, so I told her I was going to the hospital with her. My ex-girlfriend didn't like that I left the dance to go be with my sister, so I dumped her. Today her friends…said some things about my sister I was not ok with. Things I'ld really rather not repeat." Patrick explained. I didn't even think about needing to hide my scratches from Gerard.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I have to suspend the person who threw the first punch for two days." Gerard answered. Patrick begrudgingly raised his hand. "Alright, hand this piece of paper to my receptionist and she will have your mother come and pick you up." Gerard waited for Patrick to leave the room. "Since it appears as though the two of you were only defending your brother, a very admirable quality, and you are both some of our best students, I'll let it slide this once, but do not let it happen again." Garrett and I both nodded enthusiastically. He waved his hand and dismissed us. Well that was close.
Fun Fact: After their mother's death, Raf's father distanced himself from Raf because she looked too much like their mother and it hurt for him to see her. Raf's Uncle Leo became her father figure, as well as her brother's father figure. He is who takes in Ameerah.
