Arriving back home, she dropped her things, turned off her phone, locked her door and all the windows, and sat in her room, letting dark thoughts consume her mind.
Third Person
A loud crack of thunder sounded throughout the sky as the rain beat down heavily. People took shelter both indoors and underneath umbrellas. To them, it was just another rainy day. But for December, it was much more. She hated rain, she hated how it could be so inconsiderate, and falling whenever it pleased without thinking how it could affect the people it poured on, and she also hated how it was perfectly reflecting on her mood.
She caught herself gazing out the window, absently watching the weather outside. Shaking her head, she walked over to the window and processed to close the blinds. The thunder was as loud as ever, but there wasn't anything she could do about that.
Focus December, all you came out here to do was to get a snack and then go back.
After her last run in with Daiki, she had locked herself away in her room, having no motivation to do anything, and only getting up for food and the bathroom. She could lie on her bed for hours, not moving a single muscle. It would help if she could sleep, but her insomnia wasn't that kind. But it didn't bother her; this wasn't the first time she had been this way.
Scouring her shelves, she picked out a box of fudge-centered cookies and a bag of sour cream and onion wavy chips, then picking out a bottle of cherry cola from the fridge. She was thankful that she had gone shopping beforehand otherwise she'd starve. As she was heading back to her room, a flicker of light caught her eye. At first, she was confused, she had pulled the blinds over the window, so the lighting shouldn't have been able to show through. But once she looked over, she realized it wasn't the weather, but her own light that was flickering. On and off, almost like it was having some kind of seizure. Putting down the snacks on the counter, she slowly approached the light to get a closer look. Then she stopped.
I should probably turn it off first, getting electrocuted isn't the way I want to die. At least today.
But before she could even make a single move towards the switch the bulb suddenly burst, shards of glass flying every which way. One of the shards hit December, just below her right eye. She winced, and suddenly everything was dark.
What the-? What happened to the lights?
Quickly she maneuvered her way back to her room to find her phone, and turn on its flashlight. She looked around. Everything was the same, just dark. Except for the pieces of glass littering the floor around her small table. She would have to clean that up later.
*knock knock*
Unexpectedly she heard someone at her door. Carefully maneuvering through the room, she found the building manager.
"Good afternoon miss. I'd like to inform you that for the time being to please grab your coat and wait outside. An electrician has been called, and the repairs will get done as soon as possible."
Silently complying, December found her raincoat and slipped on her shoes. She waited at the front if the building in the rain, along with everyone else in the building. She came to realize there were actually quite a few people living there, even recognizing a few faces from school. But even with so many people, she felt alone. It wasn't like anyone there could help her.
She kept her hands in her coat pockets and sighed. This was the last thing she wanted to be doing.
"How hard is it for a girl to lock herself in her room and eat without any disruptions?" She muttered to herself.
"Well, I'm sorry your self-pity fest was interrupted."
She turned suddenly at the new voice, coming face to face with a girl she knew she didn't know but seemed strangely familiar. Maybe it had something to do with her piercing blue eyes. Or was it her long silver hair?
"I didn't ask for any input, thanks," she barked sarcastically.
"Oh boo hoo, you got your feelings hurt. How will you ever survive?"
December growled; she wasn't liking this girl at all. "Look, I don't know what I did to get on your case, but would you do me a favour and get off mine? My life sucks enough as it is, I don't need some random bitch adding to the list."
"This is only the start of what'll happen to you."
December furrowed her brow. Who was this chick, and why was she acting like she knew her?
"And when things start moving along, you'll be wishing you felt like you do now." She pointed at December's cheek. "In fact, that'll be the smallest of the casualties you'll endure."
Staring in disbelief, December couldn't come to terms with what this girl was blabbering on about. What did she mean "the smallest casualty"? Why did she say things were going to get worse? Wait, why did it matter? This was just some random girl she had never met before, how would she know anything?
"You've been warned, December May."
She blinked. "How do you know my-?"
"Attention all building residences!"
December turned around to see what was going on. The building manager was in the middle of the crowd, talking into a megaphone.
"The power has been restored in the building; you are now allowed to enter. Thank you for your patience!"
People began filing into the building, all crowding together to try and get out of the rain as quickly as possible. December turned back to ask the girl again how she knew her, but to her dismay, she was gone, and not a trace of her to be found. She looked around the area to make sure. Maybe she had gone back into the building? Or did she even live there? But then why-?
"December?"
She turned around at the sound of her name to find herself face-to-face with-
"Kai? What are you doing here?"
He was wearing his usual casual outfit, with the addition of a navy blue umbrella.
"I could ask you the same," he replied coldly.
She turned away from him and crossed her arms. "Our building's power went out, so we had to wait out here while it was getting fixed."
"You're bleeding."
She looked back and for a split second she could have sworn Kai looked anxious, but only for a moment, and she wasn't even sure if it was true.
"A light bulb in my room kinda exploded, but I'm fine."
Wait, am I explaining what happened? Why should he get to know?
"I see."
He turned without another word. She watched as he left. He seemed.. interested, for some reason.
She shook her head. Wondering about it wasn't going to do anything. She began walking back to the building, and back to her room.
Kai entered his apartment building and made his way to his floor. As he walked down the hall he kept thinking back to what December had said. Something about it was bothering him. He decided to check something out for himself.
As she made her way back, she overheard a conversation; something about there being no other instances of power outages in the entire city.
