Chapter Thirty-eight: Too Late

Chase's P.O.V.

I stir in bed finally giving up on sleep. I get up and head for the bathroom as quietly as possible. Not before Adam wakes up and stops me though.

"Where are you going?" He asks groggily.

"Bathroom," I sigh.

"Again?"

"Yeah," I answer annoyed.

I continue my journey to the bathroom that's become my sanctuary after being pregnant. Sighing again I relieve the pressure on my bladder. When I come back, Adam is sitting on the bed smiling apologetically. He pats the empty space next to him.

"You okay?" He asks as I sit.

"Aside from peeing 24/7, I'm dandy," I joke sarcastically.

"Sorry," he whispers guilty.

"It's okay...really," I smile tenderly.

He smiles back but it falters a bit.

"What?" I ask.

"Thinking," he shrugs.

"...h-how am I supposed to give birth?" I wonder after a while suddenly remembering my worries.

"Remember when you were knocked out and Mr. D had to examine you?" He questions.

I nod remembering clearly how I came to and lost consciousness again and again.

"He also mentioned a few things I just remembered," he says nonchalantly.

I roll my eyes and wait expectantly as he gathers his thoughts.

"The radioactivity actually changed some...things from your body," he starts.

"Like?" I inquire.

"You...developed a...a functioning uterus actually," he flushes as he speaks.

"A uterus? A working, full functioning, uterus?" I gape.

"That's why we...conceived," he whispers.

Oh god, I think.

"Anyhow, your um uterus also has a birth canal that well yeah," he hurries through.

"Birth canal? So I can deliver naturally?"

"Pretty much yes," he coughs.

I shift in my seat feeling uncomfortable and wince. Of course it doesn't go unnoticed by Adam.

"What's wrong?" He starts to panic.

Instead of answering I guide his hand to my stomach. We wait a minute but nothing happens. Yet.

"Chase, what-"

He stops short getting cut off by the press of someone's tiny foot against his palm. His breath catches in his throat unable to say anything.

"Being five months along means you can start to feel him or her too," I whisper nervously.

"Wow...I don't know what to say...just...Wow," he finally replies.

I nod smiling contently.

"Soon we'll go home...I promise," he vows while caressing my stretched skin.

"I believe you...but you are our home," I say.

He pulls me in for a hug, his breath brushes over my ear.

"And you are my everything," he whispers back.

I pull Adam back for a chaste kiss.

"'m hungry," I smile against his lips.

He chuckles a bit and gets up to go to the kitchen.

"What would you like?" He calls.

I follow behind him trailing like a lost puppy.

"Pickles with orange marmalade, peanut butter, whip cream and chocolate syrup," I list.

He looks a bit freaked out by the weird combo but in my defense he got me this way.

"Let's go to the store...we don't have pickles and marmalade," he notes.

I nod excitedly and make to grab for his hoodie.

"Chase," he warns.

"People will know," I argue.

He sighs, "it's bad for you, you can be dehydrated."

I give him my best puppy eye look and pout. He eventually, though reluctantly, gives in.

Unknown's P.O.V.

My eyes glow golden yellow as I run off leading Krane away from Chase and Adam's new home. I've been leading him away for a month I hope I can manage a few hours. But as luck has it, it wasn't enough. He managed to find their apartment before we got out of range just as Adam and Chase come out.

"So here's where they've been hiding?" Krane muses.

I growl threateningly. I launch myself at Krane knocking him down in an alley.

"I won't let you hurt them!" I shout.

He laughs but his expression remains stoic. He punches me in the gut knocking out the air from my lungs. I reciprocate his action but weaker considering I could barely breathe. But the only thing that occurs to him is to stumble back.

"You can't so much as scratch me," he sneers.

"I don't have to, just look at yourself in the mirror," I smirk.

His eyes glow red and in an instant fires at me furious. I stand my ground and shut my eyes expecting the stunning blow. It never happens.

"Thought maybe you could use a hand," Chase smiles.

I open my eyes to see Chase and Adam standing between Krane and the only exit.

"Look who decided to join," Krane mutters.

Adam launches himself to Krane like I did. The difference is they both tumble to the ground.

"Are you okay?" Chase asks.

"You shouldn't be here," I hiss.

"Well we don't have a choice anymore. I'm tired of hiding," he retorts, hand on his hip. I can clearly see the baby bump hiding under his hoodie that draws a smile to my face.

As we bicker we turn to see Krane being pinned down to the gravel by Adam. He turns and stares at Chase while his arms push against Adam's shoulders keeping him at bay. His eyes glow again. This time a different color, almost a flaming orange. Instinct takes over and I push Chase out the way just as Krane shoots. I take the blow this time around, our bionics and reflexes too slow to stop him.

What I expect isn't what happens. I expected to be stunned temporarily, the most, but instead I cough droplets of something black resembling blood. And then I feel the excruciating pain. I fall to my knees, "blood" flowing steadily from my wound.

Davenport's P.O.V.

I knew something was wrong the moment Chase and Adam turned their GPS signals back on. After a month of not knowing anything about them they are in need.

"What's wrong big D?" Leo asks breathlessly, probably from running.

"Yeah what he said," Bree says.

"Chase and Adam turned on their signals. Bree, run ahead and help them, I'll send you their location," I inform.

She nods and starts speeding off. I grab my keys and head for the door, Leo right behind.

Are we too late? What if we're too late? What if something happens to them? All these stupid questions run through my mind. They have to be okay.

Chase's P.O.V.

I stare horrified at the convulsing body before me. Slowly slipping away into the darkness. This wasn't supposed to happen. Not like this.

Krane pushes a shocked Adam off of him. He lands against the wall. Flashbacks of when we first met this creep resurface. Adam bleeding against the wall. Krane inching closer to me intent on killing. And then he comes. He saves us. And I never knew why.

I land on my knees next to the dying bloody body. I hear a gasp or two probably from Mr. Davenport, Bree and Leo. They're too late. I pick his head up from the concrete ground and gently place it on my lap. His eyes finally returning to their original color after months of hiding his identity. My hand trails over his hard features his hood drawn down. I encircle the bleeding wound on his chest until my bloodied hand interlocks with his robotic one.

"Marcus," I cry hoarsely, tears falling freely.
