Chapter 38 – Pure and Unadulterated
"No Severide alright. I already told you that I didn't want anything. Look we haven't even worked out the details alright so how about we leave this alone for now." Matt really wasn't in the mood for this conversation, the same conversation he and Kelly had been having since he an Gabby broke the new that they were getting married, two and a half months ago. And it wasn't so much as them breaking the news; it was more Shay breaking it for them.
They had gone a whole two-hour shift without anyone noticing, it was something that they had grown to love, playing games with the rest of the house. They would have some big new, some secret, like getting back together or moving in but this was much bigger but they wanted to see how long it too for someone to noticed. An so all throughout Gabby being in the common room, her hands resting on the table or the bench, handing things to the guys specifically with her held hand, no one noticed.
It was becoming a little frustrating actually, how blind could they be? But that was until Shay and Gabby sat in the back of the ambo, checking items of their lists, making note of the things they needed more of when shay let out an ear piercing cry, causing Gabby to jump and the guys running out from the common room, Wanting to make sure that they girls were ok.
"Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!" Was all Shay could say over and over, her hand almost pulling Gabby's from its socket as she brought her hand to her face, inspecting he rings, although she had already seen it, she hadn't seen it on and she had NO idea that matt had already asked.
"Ah Shay...what's going on?" Cruz voice caught the girls attention, the men gathering around the back of the ambo, no one of then realising that shay was staring at Gabby's left hand until she wordlessly turned it around for them to see, he ring sparkling under the lights of the garage. Cheers and clapping broke out instantly, the excitement level skyrocketing when matt showed his face, smiling widely and his eyes trained on Gabby the whole time. Congratulation and hugs passed around by all.
Then Cruz spoke again, but this time Matt grimaced, he had to open his big mouth didn't he? "You know what this means! Stag party!" The men cheered louder clapping and cheering even more than what they had one when they had seen the ring. Matt was not pleased, he didn't like the idea of a stag party, he didn't like the idea of a strip club or stripper and he knew that that was where they were going to take him, he just wished that he could find away out of it. He stole a glance in Gabby's direction, noting that she had raised an eyebrow at him a smile on her face.
She didn't really mind if he went, he could have fun with the guys, it didn't really bother her but she knew he as embarrassed an uncomfortable at the idea and that's what made her smile. She would never stop him from having a night with the guys, never stop him from going out if he wanted to, she knew he loved her an that he knew whose bed he was going to at night.
And that's how the conversation with Severide had started. Every day it was the constant questions about when he wanted to plan it, where he wanted to go or who he wanted to invite. But Matt had insisted he didn't want to do anything, that he didn't want to go to the strippers, that he didn't want to have a party, he would prefer to play poker with the guys and just have a quiet night.
But Kelly and the guys were not having anything of that, each of them mentioning a new place they could go each shift, talking about how many people or how much to put of the bar tab, none of them listening to anything matt had to say. Matt inwardly shuddered at the idea of the party they were planning. He had always felt uncomfortable at a strip club, sure the girls were hot and were barely clothed but there was nothing about those places that he enjoyed.
Walking back through the double doors into the firehouse, Kelly right in his tale, Matt sighed, glancing down at his phone, trying to ignore Severide. "Come on Casey! It's not everyday you get married! Please do this for me!" He was almost whining and Matt was almost at breaking point that he was going to yell and them all to leave well enough alone. But he never did, they wanted to have fun and he was their excuse that was the only reason that he may have ever agreed to go with them. And he hadn't even done that. "I'm telling you Severide, I'm not interested." He fruitfully tried once more.
Pocketing his phone, Matt glanced around smiling when he noticed Gabby asleep on the couch, a wedding magazine resting on her stomach and her legs resting against Mouch's lap. She looked so peaceful, not even the TV bothering her. Coming to her side, Matt shook her shoulder gently, "Baby, why don't you get up and go lay down in the bunk room...I'm sure this isn't very comfortable for you or Mouch." Matt stole a glance at Mouch who just smiled, he really didn't mind having Gabby against him the way she was, she had become the daughter he never had.
"Baby..." He shook her again this time gaining a groan from her.
"Matt?" He loved that voice, the softness of it when she was waking up. She blinked up at him, smiling softly.
"Come on love, let's get you onto something a little more comfortable." He tried to lift her but she groaned again, shaking her head and curling further into the couch.
"No. Tired. Comfy." She whined, almost like a child, he laughed, shaking his before he helped her sit up slowly, taking the seat where her head was before resting her head against his lap. Instantly his fingers found her hair, massaging her scalp gently.
"You alright Dawson? Casey been keeping you up all night huh?" Hermann's voice rang through the common room, everyone laughing at her next groan, she was awake, dozing lighting as Matt's fingers moved against her head.
"Ha. Ha Hermann. James was sick again so Gabby was up all night with him on our days off, she has spent the last couple of days and night looking after him. So no I haven't been keeping her up." Casey wasn't angry at the comment; he was smiling at the blush that rose in her cheeks, thankful that he was the only one to be able to see it.
"Oh man. Sorry Dawson. How is he?" This conversation went on for a few minutes, everyone concerned again about James health. He had picked up gastritis again from someone else in his class and had spent much for the last two days and nights being sick, only wanting his mum during the night.
Gabby had forced Matt out of the house, knowing he had construction jobs lined up she didn't want him to miss them just because James was sick, she also didn't want Matt to pick up what he had, the last thing she needed was matt sick too. He had reluctantly felt the house, sadly being away all day both days, but he had called constantly, checking in. Gabby was exhausted, barely able to eat, she looked devastated and so there was no way he was going to keep her from sleeping when she was asleep.
The conversation turned quickly when Otis questioned Severide, "What is Casey not interested in Severide?" Otis knew what he was talking about but had decided to draw it out longer, hoping they would be able to peer pressure him into saying yes.
"Going out for the stag party next Thursday. He is still refusing to admit that it would be heaps of fun, come on man!" Severide smirked back at Otis, earning a growl and a death stare from Matt, he knew Gabby was awake, he hadn't really mentioned it to her because he really didn't want to go and he also didn't know what she would think about him being taken to the strippers, no doubt she would be less than impressed with the idea.
"How many times do I have to say it, I'm not interested-" Matt turned around slowly to look pointedly at the men around him.
But Gabby had cut him off, "I think you should go. It'll be fun, I think Shay has been talking about something for me so why not." She rolled her head slowly to look up at him. She appreciated him for not wanting to go but she wanted him to have a bit of fun every now and then. "Go... and I know there will be strippers or a strip club so just remember who's bed you belong in..." she smiled up at him, touching his face with her hand before she rolled over, turning her back to the TV, hoping to drown out as much noise as possible.
"It's settled! STAG PARTY!" The fire house erupted in cheers and claps and high fives, Matt groaned rubbing his hand over his face, there was no way out of this now, the guys weren't going to let him out of it especially considering they knew Gabby was ok with the idea. Matt continued to let his fingers move over her head massaging lightly, feeling her sigh against him. It was going to be a long week leading up to Thursday.
"Hey Shay looks like we are partners today!" That voice, that excited voice that drained the life out of you if you were around it too long. That voice that just continued to talk, every if you did reply or ever look at him...it must continued.
Chout.
Shay groaned under her breath, of all the medics she could be partnered with it had to be him. "Oh hey Chout. Yea looks like." She finished tying up her boots before she moved towards the common room, finding the one person she was looking for. He was sitting at the head of the table, newspaper in hand, toast on the table in front of him, his feet sitting on the chair to the side. "Where did you say Dawson was today?"
They had all looked up confused when Matt had walked in on his own that morning, shocked to see that Gabby wasn't with him. "Ah she is sick. She picked up what James had so she has been throwing up all night. I called chief early this morning, told him that she wouldn't be in." Matt sighed he hated seeing Gabby so sick and not being able to do anything about it.
"Oh." Was all she could say, she hated Chout, he was annoying and just always around but she didn't like her best friend being sick. "We might make a trip out there later and check on her them," it was more to herself but matt smiled appreciatively, thankful Gabby had a best friend like shay.
"Thanks Shay, I'm sure she will be happy to see you. She is feeling pretty crappy." He smiled back at her again. With a quick nod, Shay moved towards the garage, knowing that inventory was calling her name.
And they did, Shay and Chout went to visit Gabby just before lunch time, bringing her something to eat, hoping that she had been feeling a little better than what matt had described. And she was, they found her dressed in track pants and one of Matt's CFD shirts, but she looked alright, her hair was up, she still looked a little pale but she seemed to be feeling better. "How are you doing love? Though we would come past and check in."
Shay and Gabby stood in the living room, knowing that shay couldn't stay too long but gabby was glad that she had come at all. "I'm doing alright actually, I had been up and down most of the night to be sick, I feel sorry for matt, he was up with me pretty my he each time. It kinda comes and goes; like I'm feeling good now but it will hit me suddenly. I dunno, James was the same so we will see. He is actually staying at Antonio's place tonight and tomorrow, I wanted to keep him out of the house and away from me being sick and besides, Matt and the guys are going out tomorrow night for the party so it will give me some time to get some rest."
They talked for another 10 minutes before Shay called away, shay telling Gabby that Matt would probably be visiting later in the afternoon before heading for the door.
Gabby really was feeling better than she had been earlier in the morning, she had spent a few hours doing laundry and the like, although she felt drained from lack of sleep and from being sick she was doing ok. That was until another wave hit her, sending her straight to the bathroom and to the toilet, something she had become very close friends with over the last 14 hours.
It was close to 4pm when Matt showed up, the guys had come back from a call, noting too major but they were in the area. Pushing the front door open matt walked in, it was quiet, which would normally have concerned him considering Gabby was always making noise, singing or had music going but this was different. Stepping further inside, matt made his way to the bedroom; pushing the door open slowly he found Gabby asleep.
Smiling to himself, he moved closer to the bed, kneeling in front of her. "Gabby..." He hated waking her but he really wanted to see how she was feeling. Slowly she stirred, her eyes opening at the found of his voice. "Hey baby...how are you feeling?"
She looked at him for a moment, confusing coming over her until she took in his gear and the sweaty mess of hair. "Hey...what are you doing here?" Her throat was hoarse from sleep and being sick.
"We were at a call close by, wanted to check in. I would have come earlier but we have been flat out. How have you been feeling?" He looked over her again, shay had told him she had been up and about, looking better but this was not the look of someone who was better, poor thing looked terrible.
Gabby smiled into the cool hand that he placed on her cheek, she felt achy now, tired, but he was making her feel a little better. "Right now? I feel like shit but it comes and goes. I was alright until about 2.30 and I was sick again an then I had to lay down coz I was so tired and now I feel like hell."
She groaned and tried to roll over but Matt wouldn't let her, "It's alright baby, sleep some more. I just wanted to come and see you. Close your eyes...I love you..." But she had barely moaned her 'I love you' in return before she had fallen back asleep. Matt smile gently, placed a kiss on her forehead before he moved away from the bedroom, making his way back to the truck and back to the firehouse.
Matt groaned as he reached of his phone off the fifth time in the last fifteen minutes. Kelly had been texting him constantly all morning, to which matt had originally been replying but had decided to stop when he was being taken away from his work. He had spent the last three hours at a construction job that he had agreed to, but it also meant that he was away from Gabby again.
He had come home that morning from shift and found her on the couch watching a movie, she looked tired, she had told him that she had been sick again all night. He felt so bad for her, hated seeing her the way she was but she insisted that she would be ok and if she wasn't better by the next day, she would go to the doctors.
After getting a few hours rest while Gabby had moved around the house, Matt had made his way to the job, it was only going to take him a couple of hours, which tuned into three, but it was almost done, which would give him time to get back home to spend some time with Gabby, considering tonight was the night he and the boys would be found out for the stag party.
He inwardly shuddered, Severide had been texting him details of the club they were going to, the amount of money he would be bringing and the amount of money on the tab that he had already put down. Matt really didn't want to do this, he really didn't want to go but the guys were overly excited and he didn't want to be a buzz kill. Gabby had also made him promise to go out and have some fun, being that he had been home with her and James almost every night over the last week because they had both been sick.
When he job was done, matt packed and headed home, Gabby had texting him telling him she was feeling better and wanted to curl up in the couch with him and movie before he went out, knowing that Kelly would be around at about 8 to pick him up, starting their night at Molly's. That would give him a good four hours by Gabby's side. He had told her that he would be home in less than 10 minutes time.
Kicking open the front door, Matt dropped his tool belt and jacket, his shoes following quickly as his keys and wallet hit the bowl by the entrance, his phone instantly being attached to its charged, having almost died thanks to Kelly's incessant texting, he also wanted it charged for tonight, so he could keep in contact with Gabby as much as possible. "Hey baby I'm home!" He called out but got no reply but hear movement coming from the en suit bathroom.
As he moved closer, Matt pulled his shirt from his body, letting it fall into the basket by the corner of the room, making his way to the bathroom but stopped when he all but went face first into it, finding it locked. That was odd; Gabby never locked the bathroom door. "Baby you alright?"
He tried the handle again, hoping that maybe he just hadn't turned it enough but it really was locked, he heard a sniff coming from behind it. "Gabby what's wrong? Please open the-" but before he could finish his sentence the bathroom door opened quickly, Gabby standing on the other side, her hair in sheets down her shoulders, her face pale and her eye puffy. She had been sick again.
"Oh baby...why don't you come lay down huh? I can bring you some tea and you can rest?" Matt pulled her hands into his, feeling them shake like a leaf, she must not have been eating much over the last 24 hours because she felt so weak in his grasp. But as he tired to pull her from the bathroom door, she pulled back; with whatever strength she had left.
"Wait... Matt I..." She looked back at him, searching his eyes for a moment, she as terrified, unsure about what to do or say and so she just pulled his hands back into hers, squeezing them tightly.
Matt looked down at Gabby confused, she could see her eyes flickering from his face to the ring on her hand and then back, his hands grasped tightly in his, she was still shaking. "What's wrong baby...?"
Gabby took a deep and steadying breathy, hoping to settle her nerves down a little but it didn't help, the worry and fear in his eyes only making this so much harder for her. Taking another breath she dove headfirst, deciding that ripping the band aide off now would be best. "Matt...I want to post pone the wedding..."
Matt audibly gasped, his hands dropping from hers, his heart aching and stomach dropping. She was breaking up with him and he had no idea why. Tears welled in his eyes, "baby I don't understand, what's going on? Why would you-" but the small smile that graced Gabby's face stopped him, he was confused.
Her smile grew wider at his confusion, she knew that starting like that would freak him out but she didn't care, "Matt...baby...I'm pregnant..." Gabby watched as his face fell, each emotion playing over his face and his eyes as she stood there, his hands in hers, a tear in her eye and a soft smile on her lips. But Matt stayed silent.
He could feel her hands in his, hear her words and see her smile but he couldn't register what was being said. He watched as a small tear came to her eye but didn't fall. Pregnant…mean baby…Gabby is tell me she is pregnant…Shaking his head a little Matt finally understood what she had been saying. Gabby was pregnant, they were going to have a baby...
"Are you…what…really?" he could barely get the words out as he searched her eyes, trying to get a grasp of what was going on. Was she being serious? Was she happy about this? How did he feel about it? Was she being serious? But when the tear slipped down her cheek and her smile grew, her head nodded once he snapped, his arms wrapping around her waist and he pulled her towards him, laughter echoing around the bedroom.
Gabby laughed through the sob that slipped through her mouth; her arms were around his neck as he lifted her into the air, spinning her around happily before he placed her back down on the ground, his lips finding hers instantly. His hands slipping to her cheeks to hold her to him, she could feel him smiling into the kiss. "You're pregnant? We're going to have a baby…?"
The questions slipped form his mouth not really giving her a chance to answer but her next sentence stopped him in his track, "You're going to be a dad…" her tears continued, she didn't even bother stopping them, she was happy, he was happy, she couldn't have asked for more.
Hearing her say he was going to be a dad broken Matt, his own tears falling down his cheeks, he pulled her closer once more, "God I love you baby…" He kissed her again, holding her close, "I love you so much baby…" He moved them towards the bed where he pulled her onto hip lap, her legs straddling his hips, he kissed her deeply, her lips, her eyes, her cheeks, her neck, every where he could touch he kissed. There was nothing sexual about it, each kiss was filled with pure and unadulterated love.
As much as he wanted to roll them over and take her there, he knew she had been sick also recently and didn't want to push her and so he just held her, feeling her holding onto him tightly as well, he sighed in her neck, a gently kiss touching her skin before he pulled away, searching her eyes once more. "When did you find out?" He was curious now he wanted to know everything.
Gabby laughed, running her hands through his hair, "Well when you were gone, I put a call into Kendra out at Chicago Med. She owed me a favour. Just after you left, I was sick again and when I opened the cabinet door to get something out I knocked over my box of tampons and it hit me that I was late, like 2 and a half months late…so I called her, went to have my blood tested and she ran if for me. It took like an hour to find out."
Her smiled grew again when he laughed, shaking his head, "God I can't believe it! I thought we had been careful though…" He was over the moon about it but he was curious as to how it had happened.
"Well…I guess when I changed my prescription there was a window when my body was adjusting…" she was worried now, how would he react, would he be happy or would he think she had trapped him? The smile fell from her face as her eyes found his, searching for some kind of reassurance. "…Are you alright with this? I mean, we talked about it but we never…"
But his smile never fell it only grew wider. It meant that this baby, their baby, was meant to be. They had created this baby with such a small change of it happening and that made it ever more special, this baby wanted to be born. "Baby I don't care how it happened, this is real, this is happening. We are going to have baby. You and me, a baby that is ours…" Then it hit him, she was worried that he wouldn't be happy about it because they hadn't planned it. "Baby, I don't care if this baby was planned or not, it is the best surprise I have ever gotten and I love you so much. Obviously this baby was meant to be if it happened this way…do you not want it?"
Now he was worried, sure they'd talked about it but they hadn't really discussed when or anything specific, however they both knew they wanted to have a baby when the time was right, and clearly it was right now. "Of course I do, I was just worried, I didn't know what you would think about it…" she was a little embarrassed that she had questioned him but this was new to her, to them both.
She was still sitting on his lap, her knees by her hips, her body pressed against his lovingly, "It's just when I had James, I was on my own, yeah I had Antonio and Laura, but it wasn't the same. I had to do everything on my own and so now you're here and I just want to make sure you are ok with all of this…" she was biting her lip and he loved it, she seemed so innocent and scared, he couldn't blame her though. Chris hadn't come back into her life until James was 6 months old; she had to do everything on her own until then so he understood.
"I know you had it tough with James but I'm not going anywhere, we are going to do this together…as a family. You have no idea how happy I am right now baby!" He pulled her to him, turning her over on to her back so she was laying against the bed, she laughed out loud, she was so happy right now. Placing another kiss on her lips Matt moved down her neck, lifting her top slowly to place a kiss on her stomach, "Hi baby…you know you are pretty luck to have a mama like you do. We love you both so much baby…"
Matt was resting on his stomach against her legs, his chin resting gently on her still flat stomach as he looked up at her, their eyes locking, her hands he moved to rest against his cheek and in his hair. "Is this why you've been sick as well?" he asked as he moved to continue to place kisses on her stomach.
"No, I also did pick up what James had so I've been sick with that as well but this is why it looks like I've been vomiting more than him…" she smiled, he always worried about her, always concerned that she wasn't well or that she was happy and she knew that now, it was going to be 100 times worse but she wouldn't have it any other way.
"Oh man! I can't believe it. Really, I never actually though I would be having my own baby. Don't get me wrong James is my life but I… this is us…" He knew this was going to hard for James; he had always been an only child he just hoped that he would be all right about it. However, knowing the baby growing inside Gabby was part him and part her, made his heart swell.
"He is going to be so excited you know…" He looked up at her with a raised eyebrow, hoping that she was telling the truth, he really didn't want James to feel anything but happiness at being a big brother. "Trust me, he will, might take a bit of getting used to but he will be so very over the moon. I promise."
She knew he was worried, a small part of her was to but she knew her son, and knew that he loved Matt and that he would be happy for them, he knew he was loved, no matter what happened. "Do you want to find out?" Considering she had yet to book her doctors appointment she wanted to know his future plans.
He thought for a second, yes they could find out, it would make it easier to pick a name and do up the bedroom but it would also be the biggest surprise they would ever have in their lives, "I'm ok with not finding out, unless you want to then we can but I want it to be a surprise…" he whispered watching her nod in agreeance. After a moment of silence he asked, "Do you have a preference?" It didn't really matter, he was just curious.
She laughed, wasn't that something she should ask him? "Honestly, I would love a little girl, I used to love watching the way Eva looked at Laura and it made my heart swell coz it was the mother daughter relationship but no I don't have a preference. As long as it is healthy and looks like me, I don't care…"
His eyebrow shot up, a cheeky smirk coming to his face when she made her comment about the baby looking like her, "Is that right is it?" He leaned up, his fingers sliding under her t-shirt and to her sides, tickling her instantly causing her to squirm and scream and try and pull away from him. "You were saying baby…"
He was now at her eye level, looking down at her intently, but she just smirked. "I would love a little girl that looks like you baby…but I agree, I don't care what it is…" He placed a kiss on her lips, her arms around his neck instantly again, he was falling in love with her more and more every second. "I love you Gabby, so very much…and I love you baby…" his free hand slipped between them, resting against her stomach. "We should tell James tomorrow…"
But Gabby had already thought of that, "Oh, I actually texted Antonio, he is coming home tonight and I was thinking that maybe we could tell him before you go out with the boys…we will do it together, I don't think I can not tell him. But I don't want to tell anyone else just yet ok, I want to get to 3 months and the doctors appointment before we tell anyone else ok?"
Matt nodded, she knew best when it came to these things so he would agree with anything she felt was best and even he knew that waiting until at least 3 months was best but then he groaned, the stag party, how could he forget…now he really didn't want to go, "Baby I really don't want to go to that tonight, please let me stay home with you and James…and baby…" he loved being able to say that now.
But Gabby laughed, "Oh no, you are going out tonight with the guys, you are going to drink and have fun and not tell anyone just yet about the baby ok…" She wanted him to go but that wasn't the only reason, "Besides, you and James will be home together tomorrow night because I am going out with Shay and the girls for my party. Yes alright, I know it way to early for these things to happen but they are all excited and want to do this for us so just let them ok…"
It was true, one of the reasons why Matt didn't want to go was because it was too early, they hadn't even planned anything but she couldn't say no, then he remembered something she had told him when he had first come home. "Do you really want to postpone the wedding?" He was a little curious now as to why, considering they hadn't actually planned anything.
Gabby shrugged at his question, "Or at least plan it for after the baby is born. I don't want to be pregnant and in a wedding dress that's all. I know that it wasn't going to be any time soon but I want to be not pregnant walking down that aisle and I also want to have out baby, all our family there…" she spoke softly with her hand covering his on her stomach.
"Our family…" was all he needed to say in reply.
Any chance of a review?
