She yawned and curled around her pillow under the navy curtains that framed the four-poster bed. The lights of Paris seemed to creep around the shades and blinds, creating patterns on the ceiling. She heard Severus's uneven steps in the hall. He passed by three times and Elaine smiled—some patterns remained constant. His steps slowed and then stopped completely at the door of her room. For one breathless second she wondered if he would call out to her. She lifted up on one elbow leaning longingly towards the door.
But the moment passed and she heard him turn away.
