Hey guys… just a quick announcement before we start the chapter…
I have decided to write a sequel to this story, so yes the 36th Hunger Games! I won't be starting the new story until I have finished writing this one, but it will be a syot!
And I am now open for submissions! I will be open for submissions for a few weeks at least, as I want to give everyone plenty of time to submit their tributes. I'm also doing this because it makes it easier to carry out district allocation of tributes once I have all the submissions I need. So there will be no spots open/closed for now, or any reservations.
Ideally, I'd love to get 24 different submitters! So please send me a tribute in a pm if you're interested :) Tributes sent via reviews will not be accepted.
Before you send me a tribute, please look at my profile. I have posted the character form there, as well as a list of general submission rules. This is to avoid any rubbish tributes, lol.
Another quick thing I wanted to ask... are any readers of this story good with artwork? Because I noticed that most syot's have a 'Book cover' or whatever it's called. I'd love to have one too, but I'm no good with art lol. So I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in making a book cover for my story? Obviously I understand if no-one wants to, I appreciate it must be a lot of effort! But I thought it was worth mentioning.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the chapter, and thanks for reading and reviewing!
All the Capitol cameras were focused on the valleys, the seemingly never-ending lengths of rolling hills, so beautifully green. Such nature had been greatly admired by the Capitol viewers this year.
However, the cameras weren't here because of the nature. A thrilling chase was happening, bloodthirsty tributes on the hunt.
Murray Greene was running faster than he had done before, with Azalea and Medusa in pursuit not far behind. As he sprinted up another hill, he had never felt such adrenaline in his life. The feeling of knowing that if you stop you would be killed, was a feeling unlike any other that Murray had experienced.
There was heightened interest in this chase, because, unlike the morning's chase involving Bryce and district 8, there was nowhere to hide here. Murray was caught in the middle of the valleys, and unless he had the stamina of a professional sportsman, he didn't have a chance of making it to safe ground. He was going to have to stop eventually.
And Murray was indeed beginning to tire. He had managed to evade them for a while due to his soccer background, but the two careers were matching him well. And they had noticed that Murray was slowing.
"C'mon pretty boy! We just wanna talk!" Medusa shouted mockingly.
"Speak for yourself." Azalea growled. "You've got to stop sometime!" She shouted at Murray.
Murray was breathing heavily, losing the adrenaline as he slowed.
"Giving up already?"
Murray looked to his left, startled, to see that the spirits had returned, and were floating alongside him. as he ran. The voice had come from the spirit of Bluebell.
"C'mon Murray, I hope I didn't die so that you can get killed by those bitches." Bluebell half-giggled.
"Don't listen to her Murray." Mimi said fearfully. "Just keep going, you can make it!"
"Fuck that." Nash growled. "Stand your ground and fight."
"Ooooh yes! That sounds like a good idea. I'd like to see little Murray take them on." Bluebell cackled.
"I could." Murray replied, through heavy breaths, his cheeks becoming noticeably red.
"Well go on then! Fight them!" Nash said, challenging him.
"No don't Murray!" Morris said, his dark eyes somehow displaying an expression of worry.
"Shut it!" Nash growled, his teeth bared.
"You're not scared are you Murray?" Bluebell said teasingly.
"No." Murray said. And with that, he stopped running. Turning around to face Azalea and Medusa, he drew his sword out, and stood firm.
Bluebell grinned. "Good show… this should be fun. Anyway… see you later."
"Be careful Murray." Mimi pleaded. And with that, they were gone, fading into nothing.
Murray shook himself into focus as the two girls got closer, shouting in excitement. He prepared himself for what was about to happen.
"I'll give it my best shot, I promise." He whispered, wishing his loved ones could hear him. His family. Scarlette. What would they think when they saw him die on that big screen back in district 5?
As Azalea and Medusa got closer to him, they stopped, also breathing heavily. It had been a long chase, and they were feeling the effects.
Murray looked at them. "Are we doing this then?"
"Very cocky." Azalea laughed. "I see no point in rushing this. The Capitol likes a good show."
"And I'm sure you're prepared to give it to them." Murray replied.
"Of course… how many kills do you have Murray?" Azalea asked.
Murray hesitated. Did they know he had killed Bluebell? "One."
"Ah of course, you killed Bluebell." Medusa smirked.
Murray was confused. Were they not annoyed?
Azalea noticed this. "Don't worry… we don't care about that bitch. We're just out to kill whoever, we don't care what you've done."
"Ok." Murray said, not really sure how to respond.
"Do you want to know how many kills I've got?" Azalea asked.
Murray started to become agitated. Why was she dragging this out? "Ok."
"Three." Azalea smiled, licking her lips.
Three?! Murray thought, panicking slightly. This girl was clearly lethal.
"Who were the three again?" Medusa asked.
"Runyon… Alissa…. and Murray's ickle blind ally Karina." Azalea laughed cruelly.
"Hey, fuck you!" Murray shouted aggressively, raising his sword high.
"You sure you know how to use that?" Azalea said, drawing her axe up. "It's not a toy."
"I'm aware." Murray replied, shaking. "Don't talk about Karina like that."
"What's that?" Medusa asked, cupping a ear mockingly. "Does ickle pretty-boy Murray not like us talking about his dead allies? Ooooh." She grinned. "Mimi… Morris… Nash…. Karina."
"All dead." Azalea said. "And all killed by careers, may I add."
"I haven't got a kill yet." Medusa moaned.
Murray stared at the pair of them in disbelief. How could they talk about killing people like this so easily, as if they were talking about their shopping?! Azalea was proud of killing those kids. Twelve-year old Karina, bubbly Alissa, and Murray even felt sympathy for Runyon. They all had families, friends, relationships, lives back in their districts. And Azalea didn't care.
"Anyway, enough talk." Azalea said. "Let's do this."
As the two girls advanced towards him, with sadistic grins on their faces, the reality of what he had let himself in for properly dawned on Murray. He couldn't possibly hope to beat two careers.
But then, he had an idea.
"Wait!" Murray shouted, raising his arms up. The two girls stopped, more out of surprise than anything.
"What?" Azalea growled.
"Is this really the way you're going to kill me?" Murray asked. "Two against one?"
"So?" Medusa replied.
"Well it hardly seems fair does it?" He asked.
"In case you hadn't realised Murray. This is no place for fair play." Medusa said, sniggering.
"Exactly." Azalea said. "Now c'mon…"
"But…" Murray said. "You're careers right? Where's your honour?" He looked at Azalea. "Azalea, think about it. Would your Father really be impressed if you took out a non-career, two against one?"
"Don't you dare talk about my Father like you know him." Azalea hissed.
"You know I'm right though." Murray said, standing his ground.
Medusa looked at Azalea in disbelief, who was clearly in two minds. "Don't take that shit from him Azalea! Let's kill him!"
"No." Azalea replied. Medusa stared at her, stunned. "If this moron wants a fair fight, we'll give him one." Azalea looked at Murray fiercely. "You're still going to die either way."
Murray half-shrugged, trying to look confident. Inside, his heart was thumping. His trick had worked, but he still had to fight one of them.
"Let's go then." Azalea said, raising her axe up.
"No way!" Medusa shouted. "Let me fight him Azalea."
"You have got to be joking." Azalea replied. "This is my fight."
"C'mon Azalea, I haven't killed anyone yet. You've killed three already!"
"There's a reason for that." Azalea smirked. "I'm a better career."
"Oh whatever." Medusa snapped. "Azalea. Let me have this kill."
Murray was watching the exchange, nervous with anticipation. He knew who he would rather fight. Medusa was still a threat, but Azalea was the last person you wanted to come across in the arena.
Azalea smiled. "Ok Medusa. But as long as you accept that I'm the leader of this pairing, and I make the decisions. And in this case, I'm making the decision to let you have this kill. Got that?"
Medusa was furious, but forced herself to calm down. She desperately wanted to retort, but she wanted to fight Murray even more. And she knew that Azalea wouldn't back down if she continued arguing. "Fine." She replied.
Medusa turned to face Murray, while Azalea stood on the sidelines, observing. Murray stood with his sword raised, a few metres away from her.
"Let's dance pretty boy." Medusa said, grinning sadistically.
"Starting to think you fancy me…" Murray laughed.
Medusa simply spat on the ground in response, before raising her katana.
Murray held his position, unsure of whether to attack or not. Medusa, however, didn't waste any time, and launched forward with her katana swinging out in front of her. Murray immediately brought his sword up to meet her, and the two weapons clashed, gleaming in the arena sunlight. Murray quickly brought his sword striking upwards, which knocked Medusa's katana up, causing her to stumble back clumsily. She recovered quickly, however, and turned to face him again.
"Fuck you." She snarled, driving her katana forward, in a jabbing attack this time. Murray dodged sideways, but Medusa didn't let up, quickly jabbing again and again, forcing him on the defensive. Murray was doing well, however, and was blocking her attacks with skill. He then swung his sword out viciously, now making Medusa jump back to avoid being struck. She was clearly becoming frustrated.
"C'mon Medusa, kill him! Stop messing around!' Azalea shouted.
Medusa let out a grunt of annoyance, swinging her katana towards Murray's neck in fury. Murray ducked under her hasty attack, and brought his sword slicing across Medusa's left arm.
The girl screamed and took a few steps back, blood beginning to leak out of the wound. Murray saw his chance, and took off in a sprint before either of them could react.
"I knew you'd fuck it up!" Azalea shouted angrily, beginning to jog after Murray. The boy was already a distance away however, and Azalea was not up for another chase. Medusa was injured anyway, and needed assistance. With great regret, Azalea turned her back on the fleeing Murray, and went to attend to Medusa, who was holding her arm in pain and breathing heavily.
"Oh stop being a baby Medusa, it's only a minor wound!" Azalea snarled.
"Fuck off."
"If you hadn't been so childish about fighting Murray, he'd be dead now!"
Medusa seethed. "I said. Fuck. Off."
Azalea sighed. "Look… let's just forget about it for now. I'll get the first aid kid…"
Earlier that day, Audrey had screamed, as she watched Bryce strike Teddy across the face with his hatchet. And then, Teddy collapsed to the ground, his face disfigured, before Bryce delivered the final blow.
The cannon went off.
Sobbing hysterically, feeling like she was about to lose control of herself, Audrey took off running in the other direction to Teddy. She couldn't see him like that. She couldn't bare to see her friend's lifeless body for the final time.
After pulling his hatchet out of Teddy's skull, Bryce had turned to see Audrey's retreating figure. But he didn't pursue her. This had been Bryce's first kill, and it had left him confused. He had always thought that he would be able to kill with ease, but as he looked at Teddy's face, split open in the middle, he realised that the reality of it was different. Did the boy have a family? Bryce realised that he didn't even know. Did he have a crying Mother back in District 8? A lover?
Bryce shook his head, trying to maintain his composure. He was here to win. None of these tributes deserved it like he did. He had spent years rotting away his teenage years in that prison, unlike the others. He deserved freedom.
And if it means killing every tribute in this arena, then so be it. Bryce thought to himself, walking back into the trees as the hovercraft appeared. He watched it pick up Teddy's body, grimacing as he turned his back to it, walking further into the woods.
The alliance of district 3 and 12 were rather well, considering the events of yesterday. Natasha had a bruise and some scratches on her stomach, but apart from that they were all in a pretty good condition as they explored the village.
Well, physically at least. Bree was still feeling shaky, the memory of that mutt charging towards her playing on her mind. She had almost died… and Orren had saved her. Bree felt horrible now, remembering how scorning she had been towards her district partner throughout the last few days.
"Orren…" Bree said nervously.
"Yeah?"
"Look… I never really thanked you properly for yesterday. You saved my life, and I really do owe you one."
Orren laughed. "Hey kid… as I said, it's alright. You can pay me back with your share of this evening's dinner or something."
Natasha sniggered, while Bree found herself feeling irritated by Orren's joking around when she was trying to be sincere. "Orren! I'm trying to show my appreciation, you could react seriously to something for once!"
Orren rolled his eyes. "Miss Lloyd… I humbly accept your words of gratitude." He said as he bowed in front of Bree.
Natasha fell about laughing, and even Alex raised a smile. Bree couldn't stay annoyed, and chuckled at him happily. "I'm glad Orren. Surprised you even know how to speak that well."
"Like I've said before Bree…. man of mystery." Orren smiled, tapping his nose.
"You are indeed Orren." Natasha said, her eyes sparkling.
"Now that Bree's started with the words of gratitude… guys, I gotta thank you all, for helping me against the mutts." Orren looked rather sombre. "It was my bad to play the blackjack game, it was obviously a trap, and I knew that."
"It's fine Orren!" Natasha smiled. "We got the luxury goods didn't we?"
"Well, some of it." Alex grunted. "Most of the food was wrecked during our fight with the mutts."
"We've still got the sleeping bags and coats and stuff though!" Bree said brightly.
"We'll be fine guys, and thanks." Orren smiled. "Regarding the food though…. we are running quite low now."
"We'll have to have a think about what to do." Bree replied.
However, upon reaching another street, tucked away in the corner of the village, the tributes saw a building that caught their eye. It looked different from the rest, the colour of the wood being darker, with a smaller door also.
"That could be interesting." Natasha said.
"Let's check it out!" Orren said enthusiastically, beginning to walk over. As the tributes reached the door, Bree spotted a small sign to the right of the door.
"It says…" Bree squinted. "Village Workshop."
"Why is the writing so tiny?" Alex snarled.
"Almost like the gamemakers didn't want this to be found easily…." Orren pondered aloud. "I'm going in."
"Orren! It could be dangerous!" Bree said.
"I dunno. I've got a good feeling." Orren smiled, pushing open the door, to be greeted by total darkness.
"Ok, this is definitely not good." Bree said.
"Will you shut up moaning for once!" Alex shouted.
"Alex!" Natasha glared at him.
"Guys!" Orren shouted, as he fumbled around the wall. "I'm sure there'll be a light switch… aha!" His fingers found the switch, the bulbs illuminating slowly to reveal a rather uninteresting looking room. In fact, the only item in the room was a large, rectangular table in the middle of the workshop, with an assortment of different items upon it.
The tributes walked over to the table to look at the stuff. There was an assortment of different coloured wires, as well as a box with tools such as pliers and hammers. Alex could also see some kind of net. "The fuck is all this?" He growled.
"I'm not sure…" Natasha muttered, confused.
Bree's eyes, however, had brightened considerably as she pieced everything together. "Oh my goodness… guys! These are different components that can make a trap!"
"A trap?" Orren replied excitedly.
"Componets?" Alex asked, puzzled
"It means parts…" Bree replied. "These are all different parts to make an electrical trap… there's wires, a switch mechanism, and a net. The box has all the tools we need…." Bree walked round the table excitedly. "You know, this is just like my trap at home…" Bree stopped. "Oh shit!"
"Your trap at home?" Natasha asked quizzically.
"Bree makes traps back in district 3." Orren smiled. "She told me she catches squirrels in it and stuff like that."
"Wow." Alex said, actually looking at Bree with mild admiration for once.
Bree was beginning to get really excited. "Guys… this trap is identical to the ones that I make at home." She gasped. "I told the gamemakers when they were judging us that I could make electrical traps." Bree paused. "This is for me, they put this here for me!"
"That's crazy." Alex said. "Why would the gamemakers do that?"
"Why wouldn't they?" Orren replied. "If Bree can deliver on her promise, it'll certainly make some decent viewing for the good old Capitol."
"And can you?" Natasha asked Bree.
"Yes… yes I'm sure I can." Bree replied, half-distracted as she scanned everything with her eyes excitedly. This was something that she could take charge of. It was her chance to really prove herself.
"How does it even work?" Alex asked.
"I think we should let Bree tell us what to do…" Orren smiled, rolling up his sleeves. "Let's get to work team!"
Bree smiled happily. "This is gonna be so much fun!"
Alex and Natasha looked at each other. They weren't so sure.
Later that night, Audrey sat in a small cave in one of the valleys, looking out at the sky from inside. She had cried for so long now that she could hardly feel the tears coming out anymore.
Then, the sound she had dreaded. The Capitol anthem trumpeted in the sky, with the announcement of today's dead about to be broadcast. Audrey steeled herself, and looked up in the sky. She was going to see her friend's face one last time.
There was just one face in the sky tonight. Teddy Garland appeared, his nervous-looking face full of sadness. Audrey began sobbing again as she stared at it, overcome with grief and anguish.
"Goodbye Teddy." Audrey said aloud, determined to stare at him until he was gone forever. "I love you."
The anthem ended, Teddy's face disappearing with it. Audrey slumped down into the cave again, too exhausted to even move.
Eventually, she fell asleep.
End of day 4…
Hope you enjoyed it guys… let me know what you thought!
Who's your pick to win at the moment? And who do you think will die next?
Also, bit of an unusual question, but which of the deceased tributes do you miss the most? (If a tribute you submitted has died, please don't say them lol)
