Chapter 37
(Anna's POV)
I can do this. It's not a big deal. It's just marriage. I've faced wolves and a giant snow monster! How hard is it to walk in a church and marry the man you love?
It was harder than Anna thought. She kept fidgeting nervously as she tied the white ribbon in her hair. She hadn't expected this day to arrive so fast after endless days of planning. Instead of being overjoyed, the bride was constantly worrying of things that could go wrong. So many people have arrived to celebrate her big day so Anna couldn't afford a disaster or tripping during the march down the aisle. That would be embarrassing!
Positive thoughts. Everything is going to be great. Anna took a step back from the mirror for one final look.
"Anna?" a voice called from behind the closed door.
"Come in!"
Alexis's head peeped in first before she entered. She beamed at Anna, "You look beautiful!"
"Really?" Anna asked sheepishly as she gently smoothed back her hair.
"Absolutely! You look stunning," Alexis confirmed giving Anna's shoulder a squeeze.
"Where's Elsa?"
"She was with me but she said she needed to get something," Alexis informed her as she stepped next to Anna and pinned a flower in her braided bun. "She'll be in here a minute."
Anna absent mindedly began to play with the pearls at the neck of her dress. She flinched when Alexis swatted her hand.
"Don't pick at your dress."
"I'm sorry," Anna sighed. "I'm really nervous. Is that bad?"
"You're getting married. It's a big step in anyone's life. I would be worried if you didn't have a few pre-wedding jitters. Just take a deep breath."
Anna clasped her hands together trying to follow Alexis's advice and inhaled deeply. I really need my sister. She usually keeps me calm.As if her prayers were heard, Elsa walked through the door a second later. She grinned at Anna holding an object in her hand that was covered by a cloth.
"What is that?" Anna asked.
Elsa lifted the cloth and revealed a shiny silver crown decorated with amber colored jewels, "I searched endlessly for it in the basement but I finally found it."
Anna's mouth dropped, "Grandma's wedding crown? But, the servants said they lost it years ago. Mother was devastated."
"They weren't determined as I was. It was in poor condition but after a good polishing, the crown looks brand new! Put it on!"
Elsa spun Anna to make her face the mirror and carefully placed the wedding crown upon her head. Anna felt a small chill when her sister placed a finishing touch by creating a brilliant white ice veil that hung right beneath Anna's shoulders. Elsa took a step back to admire Anna and she covered her mouth.
"Is that really my little sister?" Elsa barely whispered.
"Your one and only," Anna smiled weakly.
Elsa took her hand, "I guess I'm not ready to accept it but you have grown up to be such a beautiful young woman. Mama and Papa would be so proud."
"You really think so?" Anna could feel the tears form in her eyes. She tried to imagine her parents watching from above. It was difficult to remember they couldn't be here to share this day together. She could only hoped they approved of Kristoff and saw how much they loved each other. A tear escaped and fell down her cheek but Elsa quickly brushed it away.
"I'm certain. No more tears. It's time to enjoy your special day. I want to see you smiling."'
Anna took a quick breath, "Okay, I'm ready."
Anna glanced to the side when she heard sniffling. In the corner, Alexis was waving her hand in front of face and tears were spilling down her cheeks.
"Crap! I said I wasn't going to cry! This is too emotional for me. I'm going to check on Kristoff," Alexis sniffed.
Both sisters laughed and gave their friend a hug before she left. Elsa looked at Anna.
"If you're ready, your carriage awaits."
(Kristoff's POV)
Kristoff sat alone in the stables next to Sven. Today I'm getting married. Not only was he getting married but to a princess of all people! In less than an hour, Kristoff would be a prince and Anna would be known as Mrs. Bjorgman. How did an Ice Harvester raised by trolls end up here?
"Knock, knock."
Kristoff looked up to see Alexis at the stable doors. He gave her a small wave.
"Did the servants tell you where I was?"
"It wasn't hard to guess. You okay?"
"I'm trying to stay calm but I'm a wreck on the inside. How's Anna?"
"She's a nervous as you are except she's showing it. Anna was never the one to hide her emotions."
Kristoff nodded in response. Alexis stepped closer and stood above him when didn't get up. He sighed, "I love her so much but I still don't feel a hundred percent ready. I want to marry and make her happy but now the future seems..."
"Scary?" Alexis finished.
"Definitely. Everything is going to change and I'm scared. I'm walking blindly into a new life."
Alexis smiled, "We never really are ready for the future. If you should believe anyone, it's me. Before I arrived in Arendelle, I was certain I was going to work as a waitress and try to go back to school. Later on, I would find a nice guy, get married, and start a family. That was the future I was prepared for. Instead, I find out I can travel through magical worlds and I'm secretly dating a queen with the power to control ice and snow." She raised an eyebrow, "Do you know anyone who knew that was their future?"
Kristoff chuckled, "Not so far."
"Exactly, but never knowing the future is the fun part. You found love and now you're going to start an amazing life with Anna. Doesn't that sound better than being alone in the mountains for the rest of your life?"
"Honestly, it does. I know now nothing will compare to spending my life with Anna."
"Just keep that close to your heart and the future won't seem so daunting. Now let's get going. Sven is my ride."
Alexis struggled to pull Kristoff off the floor and helped brush off his black suit. He led Sven out to his sled and prepared to head off to the church. The royal carriage waited at the gate as Kristoff pulled up behind them. Alexis jumped in with a bouquet in hand and grabbed the reins from his grip. Olaf bumbled into the sleigh next to Alexis.
"Wait, where am I-" Kristoff was interrupted when Kai escorted him into the royal carriage without giving him a chance to protest. He stuck his head out the window and saw a few fiddle players take the lead in front of the carriages. From the other side of the gates, he could hear the commotion from the villagers awaiting the couple. Kristoff sat back gulping. He tried to slow down his uneven breathing before anyone else joined him inside the carriage. This is really happening! I have to stay calm. Anna is probably going to jump in any minute. As Kristoff began to compose himself, the door opened. A few hand maidens assisted Anna into the carriage and Kristoff froze. His heart stopped and his mouth slightly fell open when his brown eyes locked with her beautiful teal eyes.
"Wow," Kristoff breathed as his gaze swept over her. She looked amazing in her wedding dress and it took him back to their first attempted wedding when she met his family. Even in that grass cape and crown, her beauty still shined. Anna blushed as she joined his side. He placed his hand over hers.
"Is Elsa coming with us?"
"She's going with Alexis and Olaf."
"Are you ready?"
"I think so. Are you?"
Kristoff stared at her face. This woman was about to become his wife. It's hard to believe that it took a chance meeting to find his true love. He never felt so sure about anything in his life until now. He placed a small kiss on her cheek.
"Yes."
(Anna's POV)
The mixture of music and cheers filled her ears as the carriage started moving. She waved at the villagers on the way to the church, where the royal families were awaiting their arrival. It only seemed like seconds had past when Anna found herself being helped out of the carriage. She watched Alexis help her sister out of the sled before releasing Sven. Her little flower snowman, as Olaf wanted to be called, bounced around with his basket in hand while Kristoff placed the rings on Sven's antlers. Both her bridesmaids looked beautiful and even if Elsa tried to protest she preferred her own ice gowns, the carnation pink of her dress complimented her perfectly especially with her signature braid. She had to admit that Mr. Montgomery's creative design to have the rosary wrap around the hem of the dress like vines looked perfect. Everything was perfect.
The doors to the church opened before them and Anna took a deep breath. Olaf led the way giggling and tossed the summer flowers he picked himself while Sven followed behind. Elsa and Alexis gave Anna a hug before taking their turn down the aisle. Kristoff offered Anna his arm and she slowly linked their arms together. Soon the couple was the center of attention, the entire crowd stood up watching the bride and groom head to the bishop.
"We are gathered here today..."
Anna's heartbeat drowned out most of the bishop's words. She stared into Kristoff's eyes sharing a look of nervousness. When it was time for their vows, Kristoff went first and reached for Anna's hands with the slightest tremble of his own.
"I remember when we first met, you almost got us killed yet I chose to stay and help you when I knew for certain it was going to happen again. It took me a while to realize I was falling for you. Then I almost lost you. After we finally started courting, I vowed I was never going to let go of you, feisty pants. It was hard for me to adjust from being alone to being introduced to a royal lifestyle but it was all worth it. You were worth it. Now I stand here not just to marry you but to promise to be here and make you happy every day we are together. I love you, Anna."
Anna struggled to fight her tears as she said her vows, "For a long time, I always imagined the perfect guy would come and sweep me off my feet. It was true that I didn't really know what true love was. That is, until I met you. It took me a while to see it but my dream finally came true. I did fall in love with the perfect man. Yes, you are a fixer upper but so am I. I want to spend the rest of my life knowing we'll always love each other even with our flaws. I love you, Kristoff."
Anna was a bit shocked to see Kristoff cry for he always tried to his emotions under his rough exterior. Sven offered his head allowing the couple to get the rings. Once the rings were slipped on their fingers, the bishop turned to Kristoff.
"Do you, Kristoff Bjorgman, take Princess Anna of Arendelle to be your wife?"
"I do."
"Do you, Princess Anna, take Kristoff Bjorgman to be your husband?"
"I do."
"Then with the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Anna peeked out of the corner of her eye and saw two chairs. For an instant, she saw her parents sitting there smiling at her but when she blinked, they were gone. Anna's heart filled with joy, they're happy. She leaned forward sharing her first kiss with her husband. Today was the beginning of many happy days and Anna couldn't wait for it to start.
Chatter from the guests surrounded Anna as she wandered through the crowd. After the wedding, everyone was escorted back to the castle for a ceremony wedding ball. Night was beginning to fall yet the people still danced just as energetically as earlier. Anna lost track of Kristoff when they were pulled into two different conversations. Now she couldn't find him anywhere in the sea of people.
"You would think a mountain man would be easier to spot," Anna muttered.
"Congratulations!"
Anna smiled at the guest passing by, "Thank you."
She yelped when a hand reached out, grabbed her arm, and gave her a spin. Anna came face to face with her smiling husband.
"Would my wife join me for a dance?" Kristoff grinned.
"Of course, I will." Anna accepted; Kristoff led her to the dance floor. Couples already dancing moved to allow the newlyweds to pass. Anna was taken by surprise when Kristoff swept her into the dance almost effortlessly.
"Someone has been practicing," Anna commented.
"I thought you might want to actually walk tonight."
Anna giggled and kissed him, "Thank you."
"So, now what happens?"
"Well, we're married so that means we can start a family."
Kristoff's face paled, "So soon?"
"I'm not saying right away! This is just the beginning but I'm hoping we'll have children in the future," Anna assured him. "Besides, there is another relationship blossoming underneath our noses and I finally have time to actually pay attention."
They both turned their heads to watch Elsa and Alexis speaking with a few other guests.
"You're not going to meddle again are you? Alexis almost killed you last time. I'm too young to be a widower."
"I'm going to give them a little nudge. That's not meddling! Plus, I need to look out for my sister. Alexis may be my friend but she had to deal with me if she breaks Elsa's heart."
Kristoff rolled his eyes, "I doubt that. She is absolutely crazy for your sister."
"I know but just in case."
"Do you think they'll last?"
Anna peeked over at the girls once again. Alexis was chatting with someone as Elsa watched. The look in her sister's eyes was pure affection. She never really looked at anyone with so much love except Anna. It wasn't hard for Anna to notice Elsa had been a lot happier lately.
"Yes, I really do." Anna rested her head on Kristoff's shoulder, "I want them to be as happy as we are."
He kissed the top of her head, "I love you."
"I know," she smirked.
"That's my feisty pants."
"You're stuck with me forever!"
Kristoff smiled at her, "And I couldn't be happier."
