Chapter Thirty-Eight: Back to Romania, part 2
"Don't drop this, don't drop this…" Nadir kept reminding himself as he carried a box that he knew had glass inside of it. He didn't know what was inside of it, but that Erik had ordered it two weeks ago and it was for the wedding. He had picked it up in the village and managed to carry it all the way to the castle, being very careful not to drop the box. Once he reached the castle, he knew this would be a bigger challenge than carrying it up the hill to the castle from the village. "Don't drop this, don't drop this, don't dro-" Just as Nadir finished the word, two wolf pups came running pass him. One of them ran below his foot, making him stumble a bit. A loud crash was heard as the box fell on the ground; the sound of breaking glass echoed the halls. "Oh no…"
"Nadir!" Erik's voice yelled throughout the halls. The two pups that had stopped running and were sitting next to the fallen box now sprinted out of the castle with the tails tucked under them. He chuckled as he watched them run out. Though Nadir was the alpha male of the wolf pack, he sometimes believed that Erik was really the alpha. He heard paws hitting the ground, coming closer to him. Looking over, he saw Zeus standing in the doorway, wagging his tail.
"I'm dead, aren't I?" He asked the dog. Zeus didn't say anything, but blinked twice. "That's a yes." Taking a deep breathe, he headed to find Erik.
After no luck in Erik's music room, bedroom, library or drawing room, Nadir decided to head down to the cellars. He knew Erik was stocking up on blood and flesh for the wolves. Heading down to the cellars, he saw a light on and knew Erik was down here. Walking through the creep cellars that were covered with spider webs and dust, he eventually found Erik standing by a freezer.
"So are you going to tell me what was in the box first or after you tell me that you're going to kill me?" Nadir asked him. Erik looked up for the freezer to his friend.
"Well I can't kill you or else, Meg would kill me and she knows how to kill me." He answered first. "There were a few things in the box. One was your gift from me to you guys. It was an Adorn crystal vase with your name and the date of your wedding on it, equaling 83 euros."
"Oh…"
"Along with ten sets of china, costing 400 dollars so that equals about 290 euros and ten sets of that equals over two thousand euros, plus the vase and 200 keepsake box with each attendants' name on it…all that equals to over ten thousand euros of broken china, crystal and probably scratched or dental metal." Erik explained to Nadir, making him feel even worse than before.
"And I'm guessing it's too late to order more…" Erik sighed.
"You're lucky the wedding it just over a week away. I'll call the company and see if they can send another order. This time, I might have Zeus pick it up instead." Nadir rolled his eyes.
"I'm sorry Erik, the two new wolf pups were running and I stumbled a bit so I wouldn't step on them." Nadir tried to explain.
"Oh speaking of the pups, you'll need to tell them that they won't be able to run around the castle until after the guests leave." Erik told his friend.
"I'll tell them. Oh when's Christine arriving?" Nadir asked as he took a piece of meat and ate it.
"I think her flight arrives tonight." Erik answered, putting the meat away before Nadir could grab another piece. "Bad time to come though, with that incoming storming coming tonight." Nadir nodded.
"I know, but we can't change that. Come on, let's go order more stuff and spend your money." Erik rolled his eyes and left the cellars with Nadir. Once upstairs, he went up to his study to reorder. After talking for almost an hour, the company agreed to place the order again and deliver it before the wedding…but Erik still had to pay again and more now for the quick shipping. Once the finished his call, he went to his music room, hiding from the guests that soon started arriving.
The rain kept coming down, showing no signs of stopping soon. Christine was surprised the plane still landed in Bucharest. Meg had texted Christine, warning her about the weather. As much as Ronald wanted to wait until the next day to head to Romania, Christine insist that they go today. Not wanting to get Christine mad, he agreed and they had left the airport in London. On the flight over to Romania, Christine pulled out Dracula, the book she would read every time she flew on an airplane. Once the plane landed, the couple got off and rushed inside to fetch their bags. After grabbing their bags and rented a car, they drove to the village. Christine drove, remembering the way and also the language to know what the signs are saying. Ronald looked down at the language book in his lap, trying to pronounce the words. They soon arrived at the village and Christine drove through it until the castle was in sight. Christine parked the car and turned it off. Ronald looked out the window, seeing the castle. His eyes widen and mouth dropped. Getting out of the car, he looked up at the castle, still not believing it.
"H-He lives in a castle?" He asked Christine, still staring up at it.
"Yes he does…this is Bram Castle and he owns it." Christine grabbed her suitcase.
"You mean Dracula's castle?" He turned around to face his fiancée. "He lives in a castle that belongs to a vampire?"
"Oh relax, Ronald. There are no such things as vampires." Christine lied. "Come on, let's get of this storm." Ronald nodded and helped Christine. Locking the car, they headed up to the front door. Just as Christine opened the door, thunder cracked the sky like a whip, making Ronald jump a bit. "Oh that's normal here."
"It is?" He asked as Christine opened the door with the spare key that she kept all those years. Going inside, Ronald noticed how dark it was inside.
"Doesn't this guy own light bulbs?" He asked, looking around at the castle.
"No, Erik is very old fashion and prefers candles. I always liked with when the castle is only lighted by candles, but each room has a small fireplace, except for Erik's room. He's is unbelievable…" Ronald rolled his eyes.
"As much as I would love to see it, do you know which is our room in this…big castle?" Ronald asked Christine. She nodded and led him around the castle until coming up to a room that Erik reserved for them. Opening the door, they walked inside the bedroom that had one bed, along with a bath.
"Wow, he sure knows how to treat his guests."
"He does, very well." Christine said as she put her suitcase on the bed just as Meg acme into the room.
"You made it!" She ran over and hugged her friend. "Isn't this great? We're all back together in Romania again." Meg quickly looked at Ronald. "Welcome to Romania." Meg quickly hugged him. "You guys missed dinner, but I think Erik saved some leftovers for you guys in the kitchen."
"Speaking of our host, where is he?" Christine asked.
"In his study, don't know what he's doing though." Meg answered.
"Oh well, I was going to thank him for letting us stay here for the wedding."
"Well I think he knows that already, but you could go ahead." Meg said.
"I think I will." She looked at Ronald. "I'll be right back." He only nodded and watched her leave the room.
"Should I be concerned?" He asked Meg.
"I'm not sure…" Meg answered. He sighed and asked where the kitchen was, knowing Christine would take a while. Meg took him down to the kitchen and showed him where the leftovers were. She helped him around the kitchen to help warm up his food. Once the food was warmed up, he headed back to the room to eat his dinner.
Christine made her way through the castle, knowing the way to Erik's study. As she walked through the hallways, she kept passing people that she didn't know but figured they were friends of Meg or Nadir. As she made her way to the study room, she could hear someone moaning in a room. Stopping, she thought for a moment that it was Erik with a woman. However her thought was wrong when Erik came out of another room.
"Erik."
"Christine?" He too heard the moaning.
"I thought you were in there." She pointed to the room. Erik sighed and knocked on the door.
"Keep it down in there or I'll throw you out to the wolves!" He yelled to them, making Christine giggle a bit. He turned his attention back to her, hearing the couple inside panic a bit. "Were you looking for me?" He asked her.
"Yeah I was…um to thank you once again for letting us stay." He smiled at her.
"And once again, you're welcome. Is Ronald enjoying the castle so far?" He asked as they made their way to the study.
"Well he's a bit afraid at first since you live in the castle that is famous for being the home of a famous vampire and also that it's thundering and lightening outside. Did you have something to do with that?" She asked him as he held open the door of the study.
"I'm innocent this time." She giggled again as she walked inside.
"This time…" He chuckled and walked inside as well. "So what are you doing locked up in your study?" She asked, sitting on his desk, crossing her legs.
"Last minute things for the wedding." He answered.
"Like what?" She asked again.
"You still like asking a lot of questions." They both chuckled.
"I haven't changed much."
"No you haven't…now enough about the wedding. Enjoy your first night back in Romania. I'm sure Ronald will want to spend it with you." Christine nodded, sighing.
"I suppose you're right." She got off his desk and walked over to him. "I'll see you tomorrow then." He watched her as she walked out of the room. Sighing, he waited a few minutes before walking out as well. He walked down the hallways, passing the room where he could still hear the moaning. Shaking his head, he kept walking until he reached his bedroom. Shutting the door, he slammed his hand against the wall. He walked over to his room and fell onto the bed, closing his eyes to clock out the world around him.
Christine came back to the room, finding Ronald unpacking his suitcase and putting his clothes in the dresser that was provided. Her eyes spotted her suitcase empty already and put away, indicating that he already unpacked her things and put them away for her. Smiling, she walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around him.
"Did you find Erik?" He asked her, stopping what he was doing and turned around to face her.
"I did, he asked how you were enjoying your time here so far." She answered.
"Well I haven't really seen much besides a creepy castle." He told her.
"Yes Erik's castle can bit creepy sometimes, but it's so beautiful."
"Well maybe you can give me a tour of the castle and the village tomorrow." He suggested.
"I'd like that, you can see then why I fell in love with this place." He smiled and leaned in, kissing her lips softly. She returned his kiss, leaned her body against his. Arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer to him. Breaking the kiss, he looked into her eyes.
"You sure?" He whispered.
"Yes…" She nodded and kissed him again. She pushed the thought of Erik out of her mind, only focusing on Ronald for tonight. The only thing she could hear from the outside world was the sound of a wolf, howling to the moon. A smile came to her face at the sound, knowing she was back where she belonged.
