I was going to end this story this chapter, but as I wrote it more and more kept coming! I think there will be one more chapter after this one. Thanks to all my readers, and especially those who review (I'm terrible at getting back to people – my time is always so crazy – but I really, really appreciate all the reviews).
The soft breeze was blowing gently, making the warm, sunny day practically perfect. She could smell the musty odor of freshly cut grass and the sounds of children playing outside, freed from the confines of home or school.
Lisbon breathed. It was a glorious day and she couldn't be happier. She wrapped her arms around one of Jane's and sighed – but it was a joyful sigh, a sigh of someone pleased with life.
She looked down at the stroller Jane was pushing and couldn't help but smile. Lily had had a busy day full of fresh air and swinging in the swings at the playground. It was one of her favorite things to do but after having a snack she'd flaked out and was now sound asleep. Her innocent little face was relaxed, her pink lips open slightly as she breathed slowly and steadily.
"What deep thoughts do you have running through that head of yours Teresa?" Jane asked. "Not something serious, I hope."
"No," she smiled and pressed his arm closer to her. "Not serious at all. I'm just thinking what a glorious day this it – perfect in fact."
He regarded her soberly for a moment and then his face broke into her favorite smile – the one that infused his entire face with joy. Even his eyes sparkled and she couldn't get over how different Jane was to the man she'd known for so many years. This was a man who was now finding joy in life.
And he was also a man who had finally allowed himself to love again. Teresa knew that Jane cherished both Lily and her and that he would do anything for them. He still lived with regrets over the family he lost but now he looked forward and refused to take anything, especially his new family, for granted.
Her life was complete.
"Let's sit," Jane told her, interrupting her thoughts. He led her over to a park bench, shaded under some big trees. She sat and sighed again, her face lifted up to enjoy the day.
"You're beautiful," Jane murmured next to her. She lowered her head in surprise – his voice sounded so serious. When she looked at him she could see that he was staring at her intently, his eyes slowly tracking her face.
Her head tilted and she frowned, wondering what he was thinking. He didn't look unhappy, but his eyes practically pierced her with their intensity.
"What?" she asked. "What is it?"
His lips turned up slightly but he didn't answer. Instead his turned and looked down at the still sleeping Lily. His face grew soft when he saw her and he smiled.
"Full circle," he murmured.
"What?" she asked again. At this he lifted his head again and faced her directly.
He took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. After a moment he began to speak.
"When my family was killed – I wanted to die. Everything that was good in my life had ended and I had no reason to live." He stopped and his eyes lost their focus and returned to the past. "You know that I tried to kill myself." He laughed softly, bitterly. "But I didn't manage to do it and instead ended up in a hospital for six months." He stopped and took a few more breaths. "The entire time I was there I wanted to die, but they watched me too carefully, kept me too drugged up to hurt myself."
This time Teresa took a sharp breath. She had known these things, of course she had, but she had never been faced with the details, the reality of what Jane had lived through. She wanted to be able to comfort him, to offer him solace, but she knew it was years too late for that – and she knew that there really was no way to comfort someone who had been through what he had been through. Instead she sat quietly, simply listening, even if her heart was bleeding for him.
"But I finally decided to live – not to move on, but to kill the man who had killed my family. That was the only reason I survived. You know that too."
Teresa nodded but still didn't speak.
"And then I came to the CBI and Manelli gave me a job. Suddenly there was purpose to my life, something besides just revenge, although that was still the driving force behind everything I did."
"I know," she finally said, whispering.
He turned to her then and looked right into her eyes. "But you know it changed, don't you?"
"Changed?" she frowned. "You were still obsessed with Red John right up until the time you killed him."
"Yes, because I'd promised my family and myself that I would kill him – I needed to avenge their deaths but even more, I needed to stop him. I'm not sorry," he suddenly said, sounding fierce. "I'd do it again."
"I know," she answered again, sadly.
"But I don't – want you to think that that was all I cared about. Over time I grew to – care about you – and Cho and Grace and Wayne. You became my family." He settled back into the bench, his face once again facing forward and away from her. Teresa knew this had to be hard for him. Jane wasn't one to reveal his inner most feelings very often.
"No, that's not quite true," he said softly. "I cared about Wayne and Grace and Cho but I loved you. You were my best friend, someone I could trust – I had known that for years. And I don't know when those feelings began to change but they did." He stopped and looked at her. But I knew I couldn't tell you."
"Why not?" she asked.
"Because – I still had to get him. I still had my promise to my wife and daughter to fulfill." He paused again and took a deep breath. "And there was another reason," he admitted.
This time she didn't speak, but sat looking at him, wiling him to tell her.
"I didn't deserve you," he admitted. "You were too good for me Teresa, you are too good for me."
"Jane! I -"
"Shhh," he told her, gently covering her mouth with this fingers "Yes you are. You're good Lisbon. You're honest and straightforward, you're loving and compassionate and you believe in justice and loyalty and all of those things. But me – I'm a con artist, an arrogant, dishonest man from the carny circuit. I lied and swindled people – and because of my desire for attention I killed my wife and child. I have not been a good man Teresa."
"Hush," she said, this time putting her hand over his mouth. "Yes, you've done some bad things, made some bad choices – and that's all it was Jane, you didn't cause the deaths of your family, Red John did. And as for the rest – you haven't done those things for years, except to help solve a case. You may not know it or believe it, but you are one of the best men I know and believe me, I couldn't love a bad man."
He laughed softly and put his arm around her and pulled her close. "Thank you. You know that you make me better, don't you? And you know that I'll always try and be a good man for you – for you and Lily?"
"Yes, I know that." She leaned forward and gave him a soft and gentle kiss on the cheek. "So what changed your mind? What made you decide to let me know how you felt?"
He smiled. "Lily," he said simply. "When I first found out Danny had left her to me, I was terrified. All I could think of was Charlotte – hell, she even looked like Charlotte. I was so filled with fear and guilt that all I could think of was how quickly I could find good parents for her. I knew she didn't belong with me."
"What changed your mind?" she asked again, but this time about Lily.
"I fell in love with her," he said simply. "She – opened up a place in my heart that I'd thought had been closed forever. And I began to realize something," he murmured softly into her hair.
"What was that?"
"That life had come full circle," he said. "I'd regained a daughter – a little girl to love and to spoil. And having her didn't mean I loved Charlotte any less. In fact, it made me able to remember my own daughter and how she loved life – rather than just the picture of her dead body that has lived so long in my mind." He swallowed and hugged her more tightly. "And in a strange way -" he spoke softly, somberly, "and in a strange way Lily connects me to Angela and Charlotte. She is related to them, has their blood and that – that makes me feel as if a part of them are still with me." He swallowed, feeling a rush of sadness but no longer of anger or hate or bitterness. "And once my heart had opened up to her I realized that I could open it to you."
"I'm glad," she told him with a slight smile.
"Mmm," he agreed. "And then, of course, I got the flu. That's when I really realized."
"What did you realize?" she grinned.
"That I needed to have someone who wouldn't mind taking care of me when I was sick!"
She sighed dramatically. "He only loves me for my soup!"
"Out of a can," he told her with a raised eyebrow.
She giggled and snuggled up to him. "I'm glad you decided to open your heart."
"Me too," he whispered into her hair. "And like I said – I've come full circle. I will always love Angela and Charlotte," he told her gently, carefully.
"Of course," she answered swiftly. "I wouldn't want it any other way." That garnered her a quick kiss.
"But – I can go on now," he told her. "I can love again – and I do you know. I love you more than I can ever say and I have a family again, a wife and a daughter – and it's okay. It's good in fact."
She froze for a moment and then lifted her head and looked at him, wondering if he caught what he had said.
He smiled down at her and leaned forward for a soft kiss. Then he slowly lifted his head, although he remained close. "Be my wife Teresa? Please? Be my wife and Lily's mother."
She opened her mouth and then closed it instantly, unable to speak. She took a deep breath and tried again. "Yes. Of course I'll be your wife," she finally managed to say, her voice breaking.
The next moment Patrick had taken her face in his hands and his lips slowly, gently – but then forcefully, claimed hers. It was glorious and wonderful and – she was going to marry Patrick Jane.
"Thank you," he said when the kiss ended. "I love you."
"And I love you," she told him. "And I love Lily and there is nothing I want more than to be your wife and her mother."
"Good," he smiled and hugged her tightly and gave her another kiss.
Just then Lily began to move and a second later her eyes were open. She stared blankly for a few seconds and then turned her head towards her father and smiled.
Jane smiled back and reached down and undid the belt and then lifted her up. "Hi beautiful," he murmured.
"Da!" she cried, reaching for his nose.
"Hey you, did you have a good sleep?"
Lily giggled and then began to look at the scenery around her. She smiled a huge, toothy smile and then she caught sight of Teresa. Her grin got bigger and she put her arms out.
Teresa smiled and stepped forward and took the little girl out of Jane's hands. She gave him an apologetic look, but he simply beamed at her, clearly enjoying seeing the two ladies in his life enjoy one another.
"Hey sweetheart," Teresa said, rubbing her cheek against the soft baby one.
"Ma!" Lily cried, grabbing Teresa's hair.
"See, she knows," Jane said. "She knows you're going to be her mama."
Teresa laughed and held the little girl high. "I am," she told Lily. "I'm going to be your mama little darling."
"MA!" the baby squealed.
"And she approves," Jane grinned.
They walked slowly back to their car, wanting to enjoy, as much as possible, the beautiful day.
And this was a beautiful day, Teresa thought. It was one she would always remember. She smiled at Patrick and he gave her that look.
Yup – today was a beautiful day.
Three days later
Who could be calling this early, and on a Saturday morning no less, Teresa wondered as she blearily reached over and picked up the phone. She took a quick inventory but Jane was nowhere to be seen. He'd probably gotten up to play with Lily, who happened to be a morning person like her father.
"Teresa Lisbon," she answered.
"Uh – I was calling Jane," the voice on the other end told her carefully. It took a moment before Teresa realized it was Wylie.
"Wylie! Uh, oh – sorry," she murmured. "I'll see if I can find him."
"No – that's okay, Agent Lisbon," Wylie said. "I was going to call you next anyway."
"What is it?"
"There's been a death," he said.
"A murder?"
"No, not a murder, at least the police don't think so. Uh – sorry Agent Lisbon but – it was Edward Johnson."
"Edward – what? What happened?"
"He was killed in a trucking accident. He was trying to secure a shipment to his truck – some kind of construction beams – when the cord holding the beams broke and – he was crushed."
"Damn," she said, closing her eyes. "And it really was an accident?"
"They haven't found anything suspicious," he said, "although the police are still investigating. I just thought you'd want to know."
"Yes, thank you Wylie and I'll tell Jane."
"Uh – okay – thanks Agent Lisbon."
As Teresa put down the phone she grimaced. They hadn't been keeping their relationship secret – not exactly – but they hadn't made a big deal of it and remained professional at work. And they'd been off since Jane proposed, although they had invited everyone over that evening, when they were going to share their news. She suspected everyone knew what was coming, but someone like Wylie probably didn't want to think about what they did in their off time.
Well, now he knew that they were living together.
"Who was that?" Jane walked in carrying a pajama clad little girl. She had her bunny in one hand and her other holding on to Jane's pajama top. Both of them had hair sticking every which way, looking comfortably crumpled and still sleepy.
"What were you two up to?" she asked with a grin.
"We had a snack because Mommy was a sleepy head," Patrick said. "But Lily wanted to see you so – here we are!"
"Come here you," she held out her arms and Patrick climbed onto the bed, gently dropping a squirming girl beside her. She reached over and picked Lily up and gave her a hug and a kiss.
"So, who called?" Patrick asked again.
She frowned, wishing she didn't have to tell him. At his look, which told her he knew something was up, she sighed. "It was Wylie. He called to tell you – yes, he was surprised when I answered – to tell you that Edward Johnson had died."
"Died? How?"
"He was crushed when a shipment of beams fell on him. I guess the cord holding them broke."
"Belen," Patrick said quietly, watching Lily crawl over top of Teresa.
"Do you think it was him? The police are convinced it was an accident."
"No, no accident but they'll never find any proof that it wasn't. Damn it – why did he have to get involved with them?"
"I think he was already headed down that path," she said gently. "If it hadn't been Belen it would have been somebody else."
"I guess so," he nodded. "It's just sad that Lily doesn't have any blood relatives."
"So? She's got you and me and half of the FBI looking after her."
"I know, but having blood ties – that's important."
She leaned forward and kissed him. Settling back on the bed she regarded him closely. "Uh – what about you? I saw your father, but do you have anyone else?"
Jane reached out and picked Lily up and gave her a gentle whisker rub, causing her to giggle and squirm. He finally put her down and pushed himself up on the bed, resting back against the headboard.
"I'm sorry. I don't mean to pry," Teresa suddenly wished she'd kept her mouth shut. The whole thing with Edward Johnson had rattled her and she had spoken without thinking.
"No, that's okay," he answered, giving her a small smile. "You're welcome to ask me anything." He reached out and steadied Lily, who was trying to crawl off the bed, and then started speaking again. "I'm not used to sharing much of my life with people, but I know that has to change. You deserve to have me be as open and honest as I can. But you'll have to be patient because it's new for me, okay?"
"Okay," she smiled back. "And I promise not to be too nosey – it's just that I'm interested in everything about you."
"But you already know me – better than anyone else alive," he said seriously. "Although I guess you don't know about my blood relatives." He took a breath. "My mother died when I was a ten. She caught pneumonia and they didn't have health insurance."
"I'm sorry. That must have been hard. No siblings?"
"No," he grinned. "One of me was enough."
"That's for sure," she rolled her eyes. "And your father?"
Jane sighed and rubbed his eyes. "Well, you saw him at the trial."
"Were you close to him? When you were younger?"
"Yeah, until his drinking and gambling took over. I haven't seen him in years."
"I'm so sorry Patrick," she said gently, reaching out and putting her hand on his thigh.
He didn't speak for a moment but then laid his head on hers. "I have some cousins from both sides," he said, "but I haven't seen them for years. They all left the Carny circuit and so we lost touch. Maybe I'll look some of them up."
"That would be nice," she said quietly. A few seconds later she reached up with her hand and stroked his head. "Thank you for telling me."
"I told you – I'm happy to tell you anything you want to know."
"Really?" she smirked. "So, when did you lose your virginity?"
"Teresa Lisbon!" he said, sounding shocked. He lifted his head and looking down at her. "You realize that I get to ask questions next, don't you."
"Mmm hmm," she answered with a grin. "But now it's your turn."
He sighed and lowered his head onto hers. "I was seventeen," he said. "and it was with Giselle – her family were trapeze artists." He looked at her out of the corner of his eye. "She was very flexible."
Teresa choked and then swatted him on the arm. "Flexible?"
"Oh yeah – she could -"
"I don't want to know," his love told him in disgust.
"Hey, you don't need to be jealous," he assured her with a waggle of his eyebrow. "You have definite talents – unsurpassed talents – of your own which I appreciate greatly."
"You'd better," she told him.
"Now Teresa – your turn." Unfortunately, just at that moment Lily, who'd been quietly climbing all over Teresa and Patrick's legs, let it be known that she was hungry. With a laugh Patrick picked her up.
"You know we're coming back to this conversation, don't you," he warned Teresa. She simply grinned in response.
Later, after breakfast and with Lily playing with her toys on the living room floor, the two of them revisited the news about Johnson.
"I know it's a terrible thing to say," Teresa admitted, "but I'm kind of relieved he's gone. I think I would always have worried that he'd come after us."
"Mmm – yeah, I worried about the same thing. And I still think he killed Danny and Emma – so maybe it's justice."
"What about Juan Belen? Are we in any danger from him."
"Nah – we didn't interfere in his business and he knows enough not to mess with the FBI. If we leave him alone, he'll leave us alone."
"But what about the money?" she asked.
"Well, we didn't have anything to do with taking it, and for him it's pocket change, so he's not going to risk harming us to try and find something he doesn't even know we have. I'd just forget about him Teresa."
She nodded and the rest of the day was spent enjoying each other and Lily. And Teresa started to think about planning for their wedding!
