Hours later her son finally emerges from his room. He finds her sitting on the couch in the living room. She mutes the television as he approaches the couch. He takes a seat on the arm of the couch, as she shifts her full attention to him.
"Where is your baby daddy?" He questions.
"Fin went home."
"Why?"
"Because I asked him to."
"Mom can you please explain to me how all of this got so complicated?"
"Ethan life is complicated."
"I just don't understand what would possess you to pursue a romantic relationship with him."
"He is your father."
He shakes his head, in disbelief, "That doesn't mean that you have to be romantically involved with him."
"It was never my intention. I didn't intend to be romantically involved with him then, and I certainly didn't expect to be now. The events that have unfolded over the past few months aren't something that I planned, or anticipated."
"How did this happen?"
She takes a deep breath.. She exhales, and stares into her son's blue eyes, "I was looking at him one day, and as we were talking I remembered how it all started. I remembered what I saw to begin with."
"What do you mean?" he cocks an eyebrow.
"He understands what it is like to sacrifice things for the job that should never have to be sacrificed. He understands me."
"Do you love him? Is that what all of this is about?"
"Ethan I have spent most of my adult life hiding from what I want, what I feel. I have made choices that I wish I could change. In trying to protect you from the world, I managed to completely alienate you."
"That doesn't answer my question, at all."
"I just want to be happy," she admits.
"And he makes you happy?"
"The thought of being a family makes me happy. I want all of us to live under one roof. For so long I prayed that I could give you that, but I couldn't. I was stubborn, I was wrong. I am sorry. I just want to rectify this."
"You're pregnant," he reminds her.
"Yes," she nods.
"Please tell me that wasn't part of the plan," he begs.
"You know that it wasn't."
"How could I know that? You never let me in on your plans. You never let me in on anything. I am your son. I have seen you at your highest, and at your lowest, and you still shut me out. Why? You can't protect me from everything."
"I am sorry."
"Mom, talk to me."
"I felt so guilty for so long, about keeping you a secret from the world. I wanted to protect you, but I realize that I made a huge mistake. I kept you away from your father for sixteen years. I kept the two of you from getting to know each other. I denied you the chance to grow up with a dad who really loves you, and..."
"You sound like a broken record. Let it go. If you had told him when you found out things would be a lot different. You two wouldn't be friends, or whatever it is that you are. Stop feeling guilty. You did the best that you could, and I know that."
"But I still feel like it wasn't good enough."
"Why are you so hard on yourself all of the time?"
She shrugs, "I don't know."
"Do you really want to move out of this apartment, and find a place that we can all live in, as a family?"
"Yes," she nods.
"You're sure?"
"It makes the most sense."
He shakes his head, "I am not asking if it makes sense. I am asking you what you want."
"I want to have all of the people that I love the most under one roof."
"Okay."
"Okay?" She furrows her brow, "That's it?"
"If this is what you want, if it is what will make you happy then I will do it."
"Just like that?"
"I may not be a biggest fan of the idea, but I will get used to it."
"Are you sure?"
"For sixteen years I have dreamed, I have imagined, I have wondered what it would be like to have the family that I always wanted. I didn't think that I was ever going to meet my dad. I honestly didn't believe that he would want to be a part of my life after all of this time. I had a fantasy of what he would be like, but I worried that he would be a monster. After years of uncertainty, and my dad is the last guy I would have ever expected."
"You're disappointed?"
He smiles, "No. He is a good guy. He's a good dad."
"You think so?"
"He made it perfectly clear that he's not going anywhere."
"So why did you give us such a hard time?"
"First of all, I take after you, and I am generally very resistant to change."
"Okay, and?"
"Second of all, no teenager wants to consider the idea of their parents having the kind of relations that would result in a pregnancy. Lastly, I finally got my room just the way that I like it."
"To look like a pig pen, and smell like a gym locker?" she cocks an eyebrow.
"I meant re-arranged the way that I wanted it."
"Oh," she laughs.
"You don't have to be a hater. My room is..."
She cuts him off, "Barely inhabitable."
"So we're moving?"
"Yes," she confirms.
"And you're going to have another kid?"
"Yes."
"With my dad?"
"Uh huh."
"So are you going to marry him?"
"What?!" She nearly chokes on her own saliva.
"I just want to know what your intentions with my father are."
"I um..."
A smile crawls across his face, "I couldn't resist asking. The look on your face, right now is priceless."
"I am glad that I can still amuse you."
His smile quickly dissipates, "But seriously what are your intentions?"
