Chapter 43: Big Blurry Blob
"Well! Well! Well! Here he is" Brad piped up excitedly as Freddie finally arrived at school the next morning. "The boy that now has himself a girlfriend" he smiled, feeling happy for his best friend.
"I don't have a girlfriend" Freddie instantly replied. "We haven't talked about it" he quickly added.
"Okay lets just get this straight" Brad started. "Both Carly and I saw you two kissing on her hospital bed and you both seemed pretty into it. I think that makes you more than just friends" he pointed out.
"Yes I'm aware of that" Freddie agreed, smiling slightly. "Like I said before, Sam and I haven't exactly had the most normal relationship so things may not progress as quickly as I want them to" he explained, knowing that Sam still needed to accept herself, her lack of sight and the fact that she may never dance again.
"Freddie just have the talk with her and ask the girl on a date already" Brad practically begged. "I think you will be surprised at what Sam says. She was ready to kiss you last night and that's a huge step" he continued, trying to give his friend the confidence boost that he needed.
"Fine I'll do it" Freddie agreed. "But I think it's about time that you asked Carly out on a date" he smirked, raising an eyebrow in amusement.
"What?" Brad exclaimed. "Where an earth did you get a crazy idea like that from?" he immediately questioned.
"The girl clearly likes you" Freddie pointed out, rolling his eyes slightly at his friends in denial. "Plus, even I'm willing to admit that I've kept you hidden in my shadow all these years when it comes to girls. I think it's time for that to change" he explained.
Brad glanced across the school hallway, quickly checking out the cute brunette that they were currently talking about. The truth was he had never really thought about Carly in that way. He had pretty much given up with trying to get a girlfriend along time ago due to the fact that Freddie would snap up any girl that was within two feet of the pair of them. Half of the time Freddie wouldn't even mean to do it. Each girl would just glance at him and drool. It's not like he would date any of them either, he would just make out with them a few times and move onto the next one. As Brad took another look at Carly, he knew that he found her pretty but he had always been into Wendy. Wendy had always been clear that she wasn't interested though.
"I'll think about it" Brad assured him.
"Sounds good" Freddie smiled. "I'll be right back" he then added, strolling across the hallway to speak to a certain young lady.
...
"Hi" Freddie greeted Valerie awkwardly, interrupting the girly gossip conversation she had going on with the rest of the cheerleaders.
"What do you want?" she suddenly questioned, dismissing her friends from their conversation and demanding them to leave her and Freddie alone.
"Well you said that I owe you" Freddie instantly replied, shrugging his shoulders slightly. "So, I've come to pay up by thanking you for finally doing the right thing. Thank you for telling Sam the truth" he continued.
"Is that it?" Valerie asked, feeling completely disappointed. "Is that really all I get? I deserve better than that" she told him confidently.
"No you don't" Freddie argued. "After everything you've done to Sam, you don't deserve a thing!" he snapped slightly before walking off.
"Well I disagree" Valerie called after him.
"Brat" he muttered under his breath.
...
Sam gently rolled over onto her right side, stirring in the deep sleep that she had been in throughout most of the day. As her eyes slowly fluttered open, it took her a few seconds to gather her surroundings. That eye of hers instantly returned back to it's fuzzy feeling that tingled when ever it was opened. As for the good eye, it was starting to get tired of being the only one that worked. It didn't take Sam long to notice though that Freddie was sat patiently waiting in the visitors chair of her room.
"Hey" Sam greeted him. "What are you doing here? You should be at school" she told him.
"School finished over an hour ago" Freddie replied.
"Oh" Sam replied, completely unaware of how late in the day it was. "Well I've been asleep a long time then" she added, wincing at the pain that shot through her broken ribs as she tried to sit up.
"Dr Dresdin said you've been out of it most of the day" Freddie replied, getting up out of his seat to help her. "Careful" he added, adjusting Sam's pillows.
"I keep forgetting that I'm injured" Sam sighed, shifting over carefully for Freddie to sit down next to her. "And I think my pain medication has worn off" she moaned.
"Do you want me to go and find the nurse and ask her to bring you some more?" Freddie asked.
"No" Sam shook her head. "It only makes me drowsy and I want to hang out with you" she insisted as Freddie wrapped an arm around her shoulders and kissed her gently on the forehead.
"I was talking to Brad today and it got me thinking" Freddie started. "What exactly are we now?" he questioned carefully, wondering if it was to soon to be asking Sam this question.
"Well after yesterday I think it's safe to say that were more than friends" Sam responded, letting her head rest down on Freddie's chest. "Do people just automatically become boyfriend and girlfriend? That's a big jump" she panicked slightly.
"No, I think they date first" Freddie told her, smiling a little.
"Yes I guess they do which is hard seems I'm stuck in a hospital bed" Sam sighed. "But I am getting out of this place tomorrow" she then hinted.
"Your coming home" Freddie instantly beamed.
"I'll be on bed rest and topped up on medication but seems I'm just waiting to heal now it makes sense for me to come home" Sam explained.
"That's great" Freddie smiled. "So, when your all healed up will you please go on a date with me?" he questioned.
"Of course, I was wondering when you'd get round to asking" she replied as a very happy Freddie kissed her on the forehead once more.
Suddenly Sam placed a hand over her perfectly good working eye and tried to focus her bad one on Freddie. She then shut it tightly and opened it once more, getting that familiar fuzzy feeling.
"Are you okay?" Freddie asked, voice filled with concern.
"I can see you" she stammered slightly in shock. "Your a big blurry blob but I can see you" she repeated.
"What a compliment" Freddie instantly teased.
"I'm being serious" Sam told him, cupping her hand on his cheek. "I think my sight is coming back" she smiled.
"That is great news" Freddie beamed.
Things were starting to look up.
